I will even contend that Dennis Edwards ushered the Temptations into the "soul" era in a way that David Ruffin might not have been able to. Edwards was more int he Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett vein that was really coming into vogue in the late-60's. David Ruffin is more in the Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson vein that was passing away. The timing was perfect.

Dennis kicked the door in as a new member of the Temptations. Some of us were leery of how could they replace a talent as big as David, but, man, Dennis fit in so well, especially, for the times and him being younger than them. It always amazed me how The Temptations got the right voices for their group, but, also, the way they all lined up to be close to the same height and size. It made for a striking appearance on stage.

Released in 1970, The Temptations used the term "rap" repeatedly in their song. The style of delivery can be recognized as rap by many. This song was an incredibly innovative and a quite brilliant predecessor to much of the music that followed. It's level of stunning lyrical creativity makes it one of my top 3 songs of ALL TIME...in my book. And it is still relevant today.
I believe that Ball of Confusion was the pinnacle achievement of the Motown Era of Rock & Roll.

The following Christmas after that summer they came out with Jeremiah was a bullfrog (Joy to the world). These are the very 1st songs I can remember in my life. Too young to remember but flash like remember very well photographically and I got excited from that 60,s hype older people talk about all the time. These were some badass motha's and I still listen to them every week. This song is timeless. I sang it not too long ago at a concert; damn shame the French audience didn't all understand the words but it meant a lot to get it out there to the ones that did...

One of my favourite tunes by any artist - simply classic song, vocals & production. Legend has it that Norman Whitfield was inspired to write the melody after hearing The Guess Who ‘American Woman’ - listen to that track and it all makes sense.

#1: Dennis Edwards was a fine thing in his day, and this video illustrates that clearly.
#2: Poor Paul Williams. Whatever he went through, you can tell he was going through it at this time. You can see that he was in his last days with the Tempts. He's barely picking up his leg when they kick during the choreography.

He actually missed his spin the first time. His turns weren't sharp. He's half a measure behind on most of the steps. It's noticeable. But he was the man at the time. Singer, and group choreographer (early on at least).

Good Morning Facts. Paul's sickle cell anemia was really flairing up during this time and to ease the pain he drank more than ever. Many in the group didn't know he had the disease due to him not wanting pity and keeping parts of his life private. Paul loved performing and he wasn't going to allow anything from keeping him off the stage until his doctor found a spot on his liver

This was the greatest of their social conscious (era) songs! After David Ruffin left the group feeling it was all about him, The Temptations shifted their focus to alternate leads throughout the song and concentrated heavily on message songs, after hearing Sly & The Family Stone. They became leaders themselves, offering songs like "Don't Let The Joneses Get You Down", the original version of "War", "Message From A Black Man", "Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are)", "Cloud Nine", "Runaway Child Running Wild", "Ball of Confusion", "Slave", "Masterpiece", "Take A Stroll Though Your Mind", "You Make Your Own Heaven And Hell Right Here On Earth", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", "Take A Look Around", "Plastic Man", "Law of the Land", "Power" and, on their Live at London's Talk of The Town album, "Everything Is Gonna Be Alright." As a matter of fact, it was this overemphasis on songs of this type and moving away from love songs that caused Eddie Kendricks to desire to go solo and caused Norman Whitfield to write "Just My Imagination (Running Away From Me)" in order to appease him - but the damage had already been done! (Strangely enough, he recorded his own message songs like "Girl You Need A Change of Mind", "My People Hold On", "He's A Friend" and "Goin' Up In Smoke"), though, with the exception of a handful of dance tracks, most of his releases were ballards)

The Temptations Legacy on TH-cam says this TV appearance was in 1970. I might call that the moment when the regime started to collapse: everything the song mentions had already been solved: Nixon had the troops out of Vietnam, etc. So people were starting to see who, for example, had started the Vietnam war, started the Korean war, set up Israel, made racism politically correct, etc.
