The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Man you can tell Paul is in pain 😢, Eddie looks like he didn’t want to be there, sad man Motown really squeezed every once of energy out these guys in the 60’s

I love those moments when Paul’s eyes go wide when he sings even though he was in pain in here you can tell he still loved performing for the fans.
It was catching up to him sickle cell. But he did good. Its a fact he was on meds right here. He had gained weight in the face

@@Frnk_3 yea , he's my favorite temptation. & you could tell here he was feeling it. He is always up from with blue. & his hands look limp starting at 3:18. & sickle cell slows your motion as well.
@@kamscott4201 Blue was always such a good friend. He made sure he looked out for Paul and even tried to look out for Eddie (even though they had the worst relationship in the group).
@@Frnk_3 yea I know I read in the beginning they certainly didn't get along but grew to like each other. Otis said he didn't always get along with Eddie either. He said recently Eddie & him got into it one time & Paul stepped in & said Eddie, Otis is right on this one. Paul was the soul of that group. Otis even said he came off as an old soul when they would talk
I feel so bad for Mr. Paul Williams! He looks extremly tired and pained here but he kept going until the very end! Rest in peace, Paul! We love you!
This is around the time it started to bother him. See how fatter his face looks? He was on meds to make his sickle cell better... but he did great here. They moved Eddie to the from kept Paul by Otis. This was the beginning to the end. Eddie has his keep on trucking look. Paul stayed longer than Eddie.

When they changed to psychedelic soul back in 1968 OMG that was the game changer for them.
Norman Whitfield produced and wrote the late 60s/early 70s era led by Dennis. Yes, that changed their image, for the better IMO.

Paul was a trooper and a gentlemen up to the end. This performance was a struggle for him but he gave 1000% and did well. RIP Paul, the first Temptation to leave us.

I'd say this lineup is the second-best Temptations lineup. The lineup with David Ruffin at the helm is their best lineup overall.
We can be very grateful that Ed Sullivan hosted so many amazing performers on his extremely influential TV show, with such high production values, AND that the original videotapes were preserved so that we can still see them today.

This was such a wonderful period for the Temptations. Norman Whitfield always made their albums sound incredible, and the "Psychedelic Shack" album was no exception.

@@barbaraann1860 Oh absolutely but this was during their Psychedelic Soul Era. It's like The Beatles, they go from singing "She Loves You" then "Strawberry Fields". They also did Songs written by Smokey Robinson. The Beatles did "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" while Smokey and Ronnie White (RIP) gave them My Girl.

The camera work is AMAZING!! Although Dennis Edwards is the lead singer, all five members take lead vocals and the camera follows them. Dancing unbelievable. One of the last live performances of this incarnation of The Temps.

Damn, it was great to grow up in Detroit during Motowns heyday. Hitsville USA, Woodward Avenue. All part of Motowns magic in the day.
Another example of the beautiful-but-handsome-but-strong-intelligent Ed Sullivan and The Temptations just doing what they do best and working their fullness of powers.

I am still listening to this song, October 14, 2020. I remember when this song came out. I was in the 9th grade at Whitted Junior High in Durham, North Carolina.

I remember a fellow down the hallway in our dorm played the Temptations, especially Psychedelic Shack, every day when I was in Munich American High School (as an Army Brat) in '69. Loved the Temptation then, still love their music today. Great times!

Great effects for 1970
I was a little kid when I heard this song...it is part of the songtrack of my life...I am forever a fan.
Although I'm from the New Edition era, in my book NE is my favorite and best group but Temptations was a incredible group. I love their style, I'm not sure who their styles were but whom ever they were, they were fantastic because I have never seen the temptations looking out of pocket. They were sharp ALL the time.
New Edition's vocals had NOTHING on the Tempations.
@@nicolebutler8166 you are absolutely right New Edition members are talented but the Temptation is a group that is made up of singers. No one can never dispute that however I'm from the Era of New Edition .NE is the group I grew up with. I was one of those black teenage girls from the 80s that lost my mind over NE. So again I'm from the Era of New Edition.
The Force MD's were even better than New Edition. NE was too one dimensional
Any group even similar to New Edition was built of the backs of The Tempting Temptations and their dance choreographer. Not to leave out songwriters like Smokey Robinson, etc. Nobody's vocals in New Edition could touch Paul, Eddie, Otis, David and Melvin's bass was phenomenal. Not that I take much away from NE.
Eddie was the one that had clothing style ideas for the Temps. He was BIG on fashion.
Paul’s having a pain crisis his body is real tense and as you see if he makes a far move he’ll quickly adjust because it hurts and you can see It in his face even though he puts on a smile he was in terrible pain and and when he did smile his teeth were clenched and he’s sweating I mean from the dancing but he’s trying to fight the pain he looks so pale you can tell it’s something wrong 🥺💔

He is pale. Plus I read somewhere they had him on meds too. It's why his face is chunkier. Look at his hand movements too. He's not moving them much. And they put Eddie in front with blue when normally its Paul
Actually Paul was having issues with alcohol. His depression caused him to drink heavily n it showed at times that they cut off Paul’s Mic n had a friend of the group sing his parts backstage. It’s what helped Ed his life. Now Blu the bass’s he had bad pains after being shot in the legs when he saw someone stealing his car.
But will say been a fan since a child of every last one of em !! tho new members I hope I get to see em one more time ha ha

@@061romell Not one of my favorite songs. Apparently, Eddie Kendricks felt the same way. Hence why producer wrote “Just My Imagination” especially for Eddie. The “All By Myself” album was supposed to be Eddie’s side solo project while he was still with the group. However, we all know what happened...

It is so wonderful to stop and listen to the songs of the original Temptations plus Dennis! One of the greatest male groups in history. Amazing! Each video warms my heart and takes me back to when they ruled the airwaves.
I will never get over the seemingly disdain sound in Ed's voice when he says "SSSSych - a - delic, Shack."
I love the numbers when they all get a chance to shine. Ed Sullivan was ahead of his time.

God when I was 6, 7, 8, and 9 in the late 60s I listened to all the killer music on the AM radio..The Beatles and The Doors, The Stones, etc and this new psychedelic music coming around in like 1967...But The 5th Dimension, Sly and The Family Stone, The Supremes, The Chambers Brothers, and The Temptations were on that AM stations too..And it seemed like they all got their souls PSYCHEDELIZED...It was cool as shit .I got all the 45s..I couldn't wait to get alittle older and try this LSD my little friends older brothers were telling us about...lol frankm64yroldwhitekid rock fan
