Joel Hershberger It's a friendly,so the ref gave him a chance,but if this was an official game definitely a straight red card.

I think the only thing the ref was thinking about was if it was an obvious goalscoring opportunity. It was not too obvious because there was a defender close behind. However, it should be red still, but the ref either did not think of it or did not see it.
Joel Hershberger I think since there was also a defender near or next to the keeper.. the keeper isn't considered as the "last defender" but yeah maybe was a red
That was a well played match, and congrats to Dwyer for that goal, and also a cool celebration XD. However I will say, that was a beautiful goal by Gyan, of course I was for USA but you gotta give Gyan credit, that was a beautiful top right corner goal.

Salinas Sporting fc Well, Don Dwyer has turned down offers from European clubs such as Olympiacos to stay in the US and get citizenship to play for the US national team. Dom needs to go to Europe, but I don't think Sydney Leroux would like playing in Greece since their women's league SUCKS.

Soccer is fun to play in the backyard with your friends, but FIFA has absolutely run the professional sport into the ground. Why doesn't the clock stop when the ball goes out of play? Just leads to time wasting which nobody likes. Why are the players still permitted to dive? Tell the refs to call it more often and it will stop. If they get it wrong at least they get it wrong the other way and don't reward the guy for falling over. Why is a bad foul in the first five minutes so much more costly than a bad foul in the last five? The whole card system needs to be reworked. Hockey style temporary player advantages would be better in every way. And the lack of scoring puts too much onus on the ref. if the ref makes a bad call in another sport, you can blame the team for letting the game get that close. If the ref makes a bad call in soccer that gives or denies a goal, that one call often decides the game. I'm not gonna watch a full game of soccer until FIFA resolves some of these issues.
VulpineShine the clock has always been continuous in soccer. This doesn't lead to time wasting. Teams try and eat as much time as possible in any sport where there's a clock. The Giants used this strategy to perfection in Super Bowl 25 to keep the Bills on the sideline and the Giants ended up winning the game. In basketball if a team is up late in a game they tend to hold on to the ball as long as possible until the shot clock forces them to shoot. In hockey the team that's winning will typically play possession to keep the puck away from the other team. The running clock doesn't do anything to influence time wasting. Players aren't allowed to dive, I've seen kids get fouls called on them for embellishment (diving). Diving plagues a lot of sports, not just soccer. 99% of the time when two teams don't score it's the result of bad shots, the keepers are playing out of their mind, and/or the defenses are playing insanely well. A bad call decides a lot of things in other sports not just soccer. In the Stanley cup finals the predators had a lot of goals called back on bad calls. All those problems that you mentioned aren't problems in soccer exclusively. Those are problems in basically every single sport

Why do so many value what players and teams do in meaningless exhibition games over what happens in competitive contests? I get that Ghana is much better than Martinique or Nicaragua, but, at the same time, there's a difference between practice games and competitive ones. All I care about is how the team (and individuals) do in games that matter, not in matches like this one.
Because at the world cup the US isn't going to put 4-8 goals past anyone. No one there is that poor.

about 7 players impressed me the rest just don't seem to be what the usmnt is looking for. I think Bruce as much as he defends MLS will come to realize he might have to scout some more Americans in Europe. even if they play in second divisions. many of these players in this squad are just not good enough. and almost all MLS.

I used to be a ref and I never really think about "friendly" matches. If I saw a tackle worth a card, I'd give it, but props to this ref. Did a really good job officiating it

The commentator said “further revenge” because it was 2-1 AGAIN. Just like in the World Cup 2006 (Ghana won), 2010 (obviously Ghana won again), and 2014 (USA got revenge).
I can't wait to see how Dwyer performs with the starting squad. I suspect this gold cup run may show that he's a staple to the team.

I have a plan for the US soccer youth development. Every year at least 30-40 of the best youth players from the country, say u18 only must be sent to various academies in Europe ,may be by partnering with them for at least 6 months or > and compete. And come back with best education from top academies. If they perform well, they might as well get a chance. USSF must step up...otherwise you will always compete with Mexico.
All but luck in this game, you guys are overhyping Dom Dwyer a failed English player. The only players I have faith in really is pulisic and Sebastian lletget. Those two are very very promising and critical on the way their playing style is.

Cesar Gomez the arm bands are for Tony DiCicco, the USWNT head coach who won the World Cup in the 1990s. He died June 19th and this was the first US Soccer game after his death. They also happened to play north of his (and mine) hometown.
