A UC Berkeley graduate and a Stanford student talk about the ways they are able to travel for free (or at least at significant discounts) by using their knowledge of credit card points and loyalty programs. Today's topic is IHG Hacks. IHG stands for Intercontinental Hotel Group and they own hotels across the planet all the way from ultra-luxury options like Six Senses to budget-friendly choices such as Holiday Inn Express.
Stanford student Sherwin Lai has over nine credit cards and has planned trips all over the world for himself and his family. Sherwin has visited world-class resorts such as Alila Ventana just by properly utilizing his knowledge of credit cards and loyalty programs.
UC Berkeley graduate Shaun Lane created a full college-level course on utilizing credit cards for ultra-cheap luxury travel. Students at Berkeley earned real units for taking this class and it be found at: creditcal.org/fullcourse

I just received my IHG card and will soon receive my 165,000 point sign up bonus. On my first stay with IHG platinum status at a USA Holiday Inn, I was upgraded to a king suite and given a choice of a drink or 500 points at check in. I chose the points. At booking, I could buy 5,000 points for an extra $19. Plus I received 60% bonus points based on the hotel cost.

How many nights were you able to get from your redemption?

I often find IHG points worth more than Marriot points and Hilton points with 4th night free

Thanks for this very interesting video guys! 👍🏼 Shaun you mention that you get a complementary massage at Six Senses thanks to your ambassador status is that mean that Six Senses recognise ambassadors status who suppose to be dedicated only to Intercontinental hotel right?
I have the IHG platinum status so you think that at Six Senses they will offer me a complementary massage thanks to that?

If Chase made IHG a 1:2 transfer partner (the way Amex has with Hilton), it could be a viable solution.

Hyatt would still be a better option with nights starting at 3500 points.

I think the 4th night cost is capped at 40k points. Can anyone confirm?

You actually pay for the four nights with points or cash and then get refunded the points/cost of the 4th night, the refund is whatever that 4th night costs. The annual free certificate for a night is capped at 40,000 points value, but you can add more points/cash to make up the difference if your hotel choice costs more than 40,000 points.
