    The story to this attraction comes full circle in the weirdest way...
    The ride started out as a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea themed ride. One of the main characters of the book/movie is named Captain Nemo. The ride turns into a Finding Nemo ride.

I actually quite like this ride but it's not very popular here and it's always almost like a joke where this attraction has more than 30min wait time, it's a busy day haha. I've always been a big Jules Verne fan, and my dad took me to see a re-release of 20,000 Leagues when I was a kid. Then we went to Disneyworld and I fell in love with the ride. I also went on the California version a few years later. Luckily, I returned to Disneyworld in 1994, so I got one last go on the 20K ride right before it was shut down in 94. I was at Disneyworld last year and was disappointed at how so many classic rides were gone, replaced by the flavor-of-the-moment. It's rather sad.

We were amazed to hear them talk about the subs, a few imagineers talked about Finding Nemo and how they could use it to help save the submarines. After a few minutes we heard them agree on using Finding Nemo to utilize the space. DID WE HEAR THE BEGINNINGS OF THE NEW RIDE? I think we did...

    • @revanche1431
      @revanche1431 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yeah but it's a tricky title innit? "30 Miles Above the Land" sounds like a rocket being shot into the sky but could also be about someone running for 30 miles. Of course you can't go 20,000 leagues straight down into the sea but I would legit argue that most people didn't and still don't confidently know how long that distance actually is nor concern themselves enough to learn it. We mostly just assumed that a submarine goes 20,000 leagues down into the depths, I know that's what I did.

    • @silvercat18
      @silvercat18 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      20,000 is also quite a specific number for a voyage of distance - it does sound a lot more like a depth measurement. I imagine it would be quite tricky to go exactly 20,000 and be like "well, thats the end of the voyage then, that was good timing".

    Out of all the theme parks I've been to, I'd have to agree with whomever thinks Disney Sea is the best theme park in the world. There are way more attractions suitable for adults. It's definitely known as a "date" park or the park you go to with your friends, not your family (though there are still families abound so it's still alright for kids). I even prefer the shows and parades at Sea over the ones at Land. If you ever get a chance to come to Japan you should definitely try to go to Disney Sea~

To my knowledge, the subs were not removed until the refurbishment itself for NEMO happened, they were stored in the show building during the dark years for the ride. I worked at Disney and every day you could see the one exposed sub permanently stored in the maint dock at the back end of the ride. All of the others were right inside the building. Great video! You covered things not well known and in great detail.

    This ride reminds me of the submarine ride my parents would talk about when they went to Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo as children. The ride was pretty much like this, but that was back in the 70s. Now, it is a large intertube that has 6 seats in it called The Lost River Of The Ozarks. Pretty sure it was a submarine ride back then to compete with this ride here as well as others that were popping up at the time. Silver Dollar City was made famous by The Beverly Hillbillies when they filmed 6 episodes there back in 1969.
    Sorry for all this info on a park that youre not even talking about, but Silver Dollar City is MY Disney and im always facinated by the history of theme parks! Keep up the good work! LOVE your channel!

    While the abundance of dark rides is great I still think Defunct land could use a few rollercoasters. Darkrides, generally take up a massive footprint and rollercoasters, while still big, would take less room, some could even go over the other dark rides. a couple candidates that would fit well would be Drachenfire and Big Bad Wolf, both Defunct coasters from Busch Gardens Williamsburg.

      Here's a sobering thought... Sometime in the future...even Star Wars Land will be remodeled or even...torn completely down. It will be interesting to see if Defunctland is still around and what platform it will be on, as well. ;) Who can guess what things will be like in, say, 50 years? Any guesses on when Star Wars Land will finally come down? I give it...oh...30-35 years which will include it being repurposed for other themes. I think that might be generous. :/ Figure that we might have maybe 15 years tops for more Star Wars movies being regularly released. Even _that_ is generous. In general, what is the length of viability for an attraction after it's source material fades from public perception? I think we have enough examples that we could come up with a formula for how long something will last at a theme park... :)
      "...with strange aeons even death may die..." ;)

      Don't forget that Tony had his own share of failures.
      The original Splash Mountain logs were too long and couldn't negotiate the curves in the flume and would bottom-out at the bottom of the drops. They all had to be scrapped and redesigned causing the opening of the attraction to be delayed several months.

I know its not the same as the original but man is it an immersive and cool ride! And I don't get the sadness over Journey, its arguably one of the best Disney rides of all time. Edit: If Disneyland and Walt Disney World were to bring back 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Submarine Voyage I hope they'll use animatronics instead of screens (it may be hard to build high tech animatronics due to it being underwater)

      I'd love to see them resurrect the 20K ride. That ride is how I got interested in the book and the character of Captain Nemo. And it's one of the movies that put Disney live-action on the map.
      So I'd like to see them bring back the ride in the way Tokyo did--by not having the subs actually be underwater. That would solve a lot of maintenance problems and allow for more elaborate animatronics. (And I'd like to see the Grand Salon restaurant idea resurrected as well--with, of course, Captain Nemo himself playing the organ and singing to entertain the guests.) Maybe now with the good Captain playing a role in Once Upon A Time, we can get the ball rolling on projects like these.

    • @JennFrank

      For some reason, I was much more freaked out by the mermaids who were gathered around the sea serpent? Underwater, they were truly haunting. Whereas the sea serpent was kind of par for a Disney ride?
      Also I remember the way the diver was pulling at the turtle with this rhythmic back-and-forth, back-and-forth. The movement was so unnatural and robotic! As the submarine sloooowly went past one of the other divers in his diving helmet, I suddenly thought to myself "That animatronic doesn't have a face under there," and it chilled me to my core.
      So ultimately, I think the fish and the humanoid characters were a lot more startling than the serpent, at least for me. Ugh, especially the fish. (Not surprisingly, I now have phobias of both fish and of animatronics. Thanks, Childhood!)

    But I knew of the movie and the sub ride was drawing me like a bug light. The site of that sub coming at you on that first turn was amazing.

    I remember riding the submarine ride back in 1981. It was pretty claustrophobic but did have small holes near the viewing area that offered some A/C. Each person had to walk down inside the sub one-by-one and sit facing the viewing window. So capacity was pretty low and slow in boarding. Once everyone was seated, the sub would be lowered underneath the water and you would get a view of a fake underwater sea kingdom full of animatronic sea creatures. I recall hearing a few impressive remarks from fellow passengers. But I was more focused on the cool air coming out of the tiny vent in front of me and what we would do if we had to escape out of there in the event of an emergency. Yikes. Such was in the mind of a claustrophobic yet creative 17-year-old. After the sub would circle around the small body of water it would resurface and the ride was over with. Once we de boarded I didn't think much of it but was glad I did it.
    My parents and I also rode the Sky Way ride which went through the Matterhorn, the Monorail, and Thunder Mountain. Later at night I braved the Rockets at but had to ride it by myself as neither my dad or mom wanted to tempt it. Little did I know how fast each rocket zoomed around the main rocket. I didn't have the courage to lift up the handle to raise my rocket. If I had been riding with another person I would have done so but not by myself. I am also acrophobic. I did not get the Matterhorn credit as neither of my parents wanted to chance that ride with me, and I was too scared to ride it alone. The park also offered an impressive and fun electric parade followed by fireworks.
    I returned back to the park in 1989 and noticed there had been extra track added to Thunder Mountain. I also remember seeing signs for a big future attraction for something called Splash Mountain which hadn't opened yet. I did wait about 60 minutes to experience the then new Star Tours attraction and I was glad I did that because it was a totally different experience back then. The entrance queue was quite large and once you entered inside you would see a realistic looking animated C3PO and R2D2 talking to one another and to guests about the ride. The realistic theming was creative, open, well ventilated, and full of fun. It was as if you had just walked right into Star Wars from a hot 95F line on a side walk! And the simulator was like riding a VR roller coaster. Something new for that decade.
    When my husband and I visited Disneyland and DCA in 2013 and stayed on site, I was finally able to get my Matterhorn credit. We rode in the new refurbished trains on the right track. It was pretty bumpy for a steel coaster and the splash ending was a bit underwhelming. So I was a bit unimpressed. I think maybe they need to also replace the old (Arrow) tracks. We also did Space Mountain. My husband loved it. But I didn't enjoy its constant jerking and uncomfortable hard seating. (I've ridden the one at WDW with it's plush comfortable individual seats and the ride goes in different directions with a few drops. That's my favorite one!) We did do the newer Star Wars tours but it was nothing like the one I rode in 1989. The entrance and queueing was completely different. The VR was pretty cool. But I got major motion sickness from the constant jerking movement from the seats. Thunder Mountain was down so I didn't get ride that again after it's renovation. But we did enjoy Pirates of The Caribbean and the Tiki Room which I had never experienced on my prior visits. I simply adored Tiki Room! I hope they keep that as it's one of the original attractions at the park. We also did California's Adventure with its two coasters. I was impressed in how Goofy's mouse coaster was so smooth. But I wasn't a fan of the launched California Screamin' as I prefer a nice slow lift hill on my coasters. Some of the other rides were closed due to rain and others seemed a bit too gimmicky to me.
    Disney theming is becoming a bit too commercial in my opinion. But, maybe that's what Disney originally had in mind - to impress crowds and make more revenue in order to expand? He did dream of building a newer and larger park in Florida before he passed away in 1966. But, there are far more crowds now as the population has gotten much higher than it was back in the late 1950's to mid 1960's. And the technology of animation has become far more sophisticated where even older children and adults have higher expectations. Hence why there is VR rides and attractions at WDW and at Universal in Orlando. And the parks keep expanding.

    I worked for Morgan Yacht when the 20,000 League subs were built - it was a lot of work , but for many of us it was well worth it. We built the stern-paddlers and the side wheelers as well as the steam launches used in the Adventure Land Jungle ride. One of the major reasons the Verne version closed was that it was the most popular ride in Disney World and had the longest waiting lines. A cost analysis of lost revenue due to such a large amount of guests not spending money for 3 hours was the major influence in not continuing the operation of the ride. It was all about the money.

      I wonder if this person has been to Tokyo DisneySea, but I appreciate that they included this in the video. I was worried they wouldn't since they aren't defunct. Either way, I think Journey to the Center of the Earth is more interesting as is than if it was a drop ride. The ride itself is interesting and has parts of other rides, but is unique on its own. However I felt like the ride was a bit tame...just a bit. Like every time you thought it was going to go all out it would slow down. Still a fun ride though.

    This was a great video set. I didn't mind that it was two parts. This was a love note to all the 20,000 leagues attractions. Thanks for the ride!

    This is genuinely kind of depressing. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is definitely one of the coolest live action movies to ever come out of Disney.

    beyond you stated goal with Defunctland, this video holds up as a great history class and for me, a nice trip back in time. I was one of the first people through the gate in Florida on opening day. I road the 20,000 leagues ride countless times. great job here!

    Jules Verne. 300% more interesting than Star Wars. I guess Disney forgot that Lucas flogged Star Wars to death once already. The biggest issue with recycling IP is that it grows stale quite a bit faster. For instance, the aforementioned Star Wars was a movie that went out on a limb when it was done, and built on and popularized the space opera genre for several generations of sci-fi fans.

      I was never on the original, but when I was there in 2012, I asked the "Journey into Imagination" gift shop attendant about the old ride, and she was a pretty old worker. She said "the original tracks are still under the parts of the ride, ie. part of the track is under the gift shop floor."

    I loved the 2 part format. It's like a mini-series/arc within the bigger one you're making. Really though, exploring subjects that require a super long video/more than 1 part is what matters most. I love that you took the time to slow down.

  • @KentuckyRanger
    @KentuckyRanger 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome part 2!!!
    I've been waiting for it! You know, 2 part videos like this actually would bring more traffic to your channel, and give more time to be much more in depth about the subject.
    I like the 2 part scenario!

    Somebody greenlights the callous and wanton destruction of years of Disney park history in the name of saving a few bucks, and then pawns off the rubble to make a couple more? Why am I not surprised Eisner had a hand in all of this...

    I actually got to see some of the work on the atlantis: tle retheming when i was in school! I was in one of the concert bands they brought in to perform at carnation plaza, and they drove us thru the backlots to warm-up in a recording studio they had back there. I distinctly remember seeing some blocky atlantis-themed structures, and a chunk of the Leviathan, in one of the garages there. Wish id taken pictures, but sadly I only got a glimpse!

    This is the first video series (parts 1 & 2) of yours that I watched. You did a fantastic job of capturing the history of this ride. I remember the first time I rode this attraction at Disneyland (sometime back in the '70s) and I was only marginally impressed as a kid. It WAS claustrophobic and hot. I would later take my kids on this ride and they too were underwhelmed. As an adult, I recall thinking, "Wow! It really takes a long time to get everyone seated in this cramped sardine can. Disney still hasn't fixed the air conditioner." It never occurred to me that the ride at Disney World and that which we all rode at Disneyland were not the same attraction. Anyway, great work!
