DESTRUCT0NAT0R His story is that he was forced to join a non-combat wing for scientists, and considering the fact that he joined LONG after Hitler came to power (but before knowledge of the camps and such became common), I’m inclined to believe him. His actions simply don’t reflect those of someone who was sold on it. It’s easy for us to judge anyone who was involved with either side of the conflict now, with hindsight and personal safety that people didn’t have then, but let’s not forget the stranglehold that Nazism had over Europe. If the crazy guy riling everyone up is demanding that you join his club and you don’t really have anywhere to run, you’re going to do what you have to in order to survive.

Crazy they don't do it again now considering how many more films and styles they have under the belt. They could pull out period costumes from past films, commission artists to make more, use it to promote their films, etc.

honestly many women cannot afford to be housewives/stay at home moms. it's not a matter of feminism in some cases, many must work bc they have to.
oooh19 I agree. Time has changed, the middle class is no longer the middle class. Right after WWII, many were housewives because the family could survive on one income, but not anymore. Most college grads now make around 45k right upon graduation except the ones in lucrative industries, which is really based on the employee being single with no kids.
Media often portrays this time period as fake, male chauvinist, and racist. And it definitely had a LOT of problem! My dad was a teenager in the '60s and he could tell you. But there is another side of that time period that we could very much relate to today. There were plenty on the opposite side making fun of and changing the problems that were very obvious in POPULAR media of the time. Modern media (well, up till TH-cam became what it is today) just left out all those details. I would hate in 50 years to see millennials only being depicted with the stereotypes you see today. I feel like that time period gets too much one-sided negative flack...which is changing with videos like this - showing ALL sides rather than showing and commentating just the fake, cookie-cutter housewife who is blind to reality and people eating nothing but butter and TV dinners.
I'm surprised it wasn't a bigger thing in soviet propaganda. I was watching some russian movies from the 50s and 60s in class and they just started with two women talking about getting their masters in chemistry and physics to start work as engineers.

They should have it as a functional exhibit! I'm not even kidding, there's this Japanese restaurant in town and its bathroom has a bidet with several settings and people legitimately go there just to experience the toilet, lol. You could have the futuristic display bathrooms in one section and then have the functional room as like a sub-part of it. People get a kick out of fancy toilets.
My local science museum used to have one. It was so fun to watch the mechanisms go and see where the water went. There was even a small pipe park you could crawl inside off.
Now, it's just a regular terrarium.

Watching Walt and Co. struggle with a basic ribbon cutting at 24:24 was the most relatable and humanizing footage of Disney I've ever seen.

I am proud to say that as a nine year old I got to experience the house of the future, the submarine ride, and the flying saucers. And yes, the flying saucers were cool looking but performed like crap.

The very idea that there was a spot in Tomorrowland where you could buy animation art cels and drawings from the early Disney films made me gasp and clutch my heart. As an animator, I would have killed for this!
It's always interesting to see how people envisioned the future back then, was much more optimistic and daring while today seems a bit more dystopian and uncertain.
The Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile crisis, and the various riots and unrest inside and outside the US broke that optimism. Humanity came very close to nuking itself to hell in 1962 and the boys who watched Mickey Mouse in the 50's are out in the jungles of Vietnam killing and getting killed by an unseen enemy and singing the same old Disney songs out of equal parts comfort and sarcasm...
We are the ones fixating on the dystopian. We can also change that.

From what I remember, looking it up ages ago, news stories about cryogenics research hit newspapers around the same time as Disney's death, and since Disney was known to be interested in futurism and experimental technology, people just kinda assumed the two things were related, even though Disney would have never heard of the concept prior to his death.

Walt Disney and Uncle Walt were also very different personalities. Walt Disney, primarily, had a lot of self-loathing in private. Kind of suggests he might have suffered from depression. But regardless, he was actually an introverted person. He was just good at pretending for the crowds.

About Tomorrowland being set in 1986, the year Halley's comet would return, Main Street is themed to 1910, the previous time it showed up, bringing the park Full-Circle.
New Disney headcanon: It was secretly run by early founders of the Heaven's Gate cult, of which Walt was a founding member.

I always thought Tomorrowland was supposed to be set in the Year 2000! You know like all the Worlds Fair exhibits! In the 80s it looked dated! But it was still fun!
1910 was the year Mark Twain died. He was born in 1835, same year as Halley coment. With Tom Sawyer’s island and The Mark Twain in mind, maybe this was all just a really clever tribute to ole Samuel Clemens.

Aluminum - 200 years ago - was considered one of the most precious metals on earth. It was considered more precious than gold and silver. It was in the late nineteenth century that a young American and young Frenchman - totally independent of one another - developed a method for extracting and recycling the precious ore in such a way that it's use for incredibly mundane things - like soda cans - suddenly became possible.
In the 1950s, aluminum might not just represent an incredibly lucrative metal, but act as a true poster-boy for human ingenuity - it was through the power of science (specifically, chemistry) that aluminum went from exceedingly expensive and rare to one of the cheapest and useful metals on the planet.
BONUS FACT: NEVER buy any kind of aluminum foil that is marked up in price for being "100% recycled." Nearly 75% of ALL ALUMINUM EVER PRODUCED is still in circulation today because of how incredibly efficient it is to recycle. In other words, if you're handling an aluminum object, that object was very likely recycled. You don't need to pay more money for nothing but a green sticker!

Seriously though, lead was in... basically everything at that time, and it makes me wonder why people thought. "Sure, we'll just put a known neurotoxin everywhere and in everything; everything will be fine!"
There's a whole episode of The Dollop about this, the Tetraethyl guy knew perfectly well that lead was poisonous, since humans have known this for centuries, but simply pretended like the science wasn't in.
@@rambysophistry1220 The same reason that people keep using gas cars and coal power today. There were powerful companies with large lobbying groups that were able to seriously hinder any attempts at regulation and spread misinformation. And they of course did not care if it harmed other people if they were making plenty of money. The silver lining here is that despite that they weren't able to keep the truth down forever and regulation did start happening and the dangers of lead became common knowledge. The same seems to be happening with climate change today.
It was also the same situation with radium - I absolutely recommend the book Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women to give more context of how corporations were able to hide evidence of poisonous substances from the public and maneuver in the legal system to get away from taking any responsibility around that time period.
As soon as I heard Wernher von Braun's name I was ready for the song.
Also, fun fact: The movie 2001: A Space Odyssey directly modeled some of its props and sets off some of the theoretical space crafts that von Braun demonstrated in his Disneyland episode.
This has gotta be my favorite episode yet based solely on the more sarcastic tone haha. Amazing work Kevin! Can't wait to see more.

I think what is most heartbreaking about learning of Walt Disney's plans for wonderful places is just how utterly vile and corrupt his company is now. It really puts the "fun" in dysfunctional.

@@doctorskit981 And that was one of the reasons why it failed. I wasn't saying he was perfect man, just that he genuinely seemed to want to make amazing things for people. His company now cares about nothing but money. Contrary to popular belief, a comapany *can* have a soul, it's just they don't tend to.

Honestly, I kinda wish I'd gotten to see that version of Tomorrowland for myself. I loved the atomic age and futuristic designs and I probably would've enjoyed it myself.
I know. As Kevin says, Disney had always been selling nostalgia, and now I want to see a recreation of what Tomorrowland used to be like.
In fairness, when I visited Disneland in ... 1978?, Tomorrowland was suffering from the Tomorrowland Problem, but that's what made it cool: this is what yesterday thought tomorrow would look like.
This is kinda what fascinates me about the universe of the Fallout games. This entire retro futurism vibe is really cool.

There's something very special about New Old Space Age aesthetic. The closest I've gotten to scratching that amusement park itch was Nuka-World's aesthetic, but a game can't compare to the idea of seeing the real thing.

Despite all of the social injustice and skeletons in the USA's closet, there's something very precious to me about the era between the late 1940's to the early 1960s. I love seeing footage and all of the dated but charming styles. I live in one of those 1950's ranch houses, since you mentioned the housing boom.

If you count the monorail as a train, Disneyland technically still does have four trains: the Disneyland Railroad, Casey Jr., Big Thunder Mountain, and the aforementioned monorail. And if we're really getting into semantics, what is a dark ride if not a heavily themed and highly specialized train?

Walt definitely had his faults, but you cannot admit he was a visionary.
I know you forwent Disneyland's opening of Black Sunday since most people know of how disasterous it went. However I wish you implored upon it more, because I have been showing the series to friends and family who don't know much, if anything, about Disney's rich and colorful spotted history. So Black Sunday, which should be known to anyone who is at least a Disney fan, falls on unknowing minds who don't truly know what went wrong with the opening of Disneyland. In fact, some might assume that only Tomorrowland had a majority of the problems, when it really was the entire park.

I understand some people might not know, but In this story, the Black Sunday doesn’t matter. It’s an interesting and over told story for sure, but in the grand scheme of Tomorrowland 1955 and futurism, it’s not relevant, and that’s why I decided to cut it.

The 1964 New York World’s Fair... as a New Yorker I drive by the Globe and Saucers still there today. So excited to hear more about Walt’s involvement in it! Great episode as usual. The early Tomorrowland is fascinating. Even more so knowing Walt tried so hard to keep it futuristic.
