    The most important part that a lot of people forget is when the numbers come up. You didn't even show it and skipped over it, and you need to copy or write down the numbers for the next step. That's when I uninstalled it. To convoluted. I try to just stick to Last Pass.

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't show numbers because they didn't appear in the process when I installed the Authenticator. I'd be interested in know where in the process you got numbers. As for LastPass, I would remind you that it has a history of being compromised. I personally wouldn't use it. ~John

    question1 : your video illustrates setting up for a personal account. Using a company account is a little different.
    question 2: is there any way to recover or change a PIN? In my case, it is a company account.

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your questions. 1) Yes, setting up for a company can be a little different. 2) It depends on whether there's an admistrator who is controlling the authenticator. You may need to check with whomever that is at your company. ~John

    I always worry about these sorts of apps and what kind of rabbit hole that I'm about to go down. If I don't like it, can I reverse what I just did. And, what if I find a different authenticator app that I like better ? How hard is it going to be to switch ? A code in a text message to my phone works fine for me. The problem is when I'm overseas and using a different SIM card; that's the only place when I can see using this. What am I missing ?

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David, thanks for your questions. First, I actually have three authenticators on my phone - Microsoft, Google and Adobe. They each function well and I've had zero problems with them. I basically use the Microsoft for my Microsoft accounts (I have a lot of them), plus Facebook, Instagram and other apps; I use the Google for my Google accounts and, obviously, the Adobe for my Adobe accounts. If you try one of these and don't like them, you can reverse out and go back to an older, less secure method. As for why you should use an authenticator instead of text messages, the answer is that it's way easier for your phone's text messages to be hacked than an authenticator. Hope I've answered your questions. ~John

    Hi I have a question to ask you on the Microsoft Authendicator. I have a LinkedIn account for many years that about a month ago it won't let me log in. I am trying to reset it with a "Reset Password" and after it sends me the link to logIn it is asing me for Authenticator Code. I did not have setup previously this so I installed the app on my iphone. I added a personal account (which is the same my login User ID name that I use for LinkedIn). I can see that every minute or so it gives me a new code which is 8 digits. When I long In into my Linked In account and I insert the authenticator code that is asking it expects only 6 digits so it won't let me use the 8 digits that I get from the app on my phone. Is there something else that I need to do to change it to report 6 digits? I would very muchg appreciate all your help. Thanks in advance. George

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, George! Thanks for your question. To use an authenticator app for Linkedin, you would have had to previously set that up. Normally, there is an option to reset the password using some other method besides an Authenticator app (text message, etc.). If you don't have that option, I would suggest you contact Linkedin Help on X, formerly Twitter. There user name is @LinkedInHelp. ~John

    Can you set this up so that it makes you enter your password, then it sends you a code to verify it was you that entered the password? I don't want to skip the password entry part. When I look at my outlook account activity, it shows people all over the world constantly trying to login to my account. They don't have the password so they can't. With the way this app seems to work, it sounds like I would get a notification every single time someone tries to access my account. I would be getting notifications all day long. I just want it to force password entry, then send me a verification code to enter after the password was successfully entered. How do I do that? Thanks.

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmm Actually, you normally don't get a notice. What happens if a person trys to log in, they will be asked to enter a code from the Authenticator App. But, since the app is on your phone and not theirs, they can't enter it. I have people try to break into my accounts all the time but rarely ever get any kind of notice. ~John

      On the authenticator, some sites use a number to log in instead of a password. For instance, I have my Wordpress log-in stored in the Authenticator. Instead of Wordpress showing me three numbers and asking me to match one, it shows a 6 or 7 digit number. Those numbers change every 30 seconds and I have to submit a number before it changes - otherwise I can't log in. I know it sounds a bit confusing but I'm not sure how to explain it any clearer. ~John

    Hi, the Microsoft Authenticator app on my phone appears to be working (as in I am getting notifications), but when I specifically launch that app on my phone, I just get a mostly blank screen with only the logo and the words "Microsoft account" at the top of the window. It's like it's stuck. I can't do anything, like for example, add another acct.

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  ปีที่แล้ว

      First, try turning your phone completely off - not just asleep. After leaving it off for 5 minutes, restart and try the Authenticator app. If you still get mostly a blank screen, you may need to remove the app completely and reinstall. Hopefully, you have a backup, otherwise, you might have to set up all the accounts again.
      Let me know what happens, please. ~John

      Hi and thanks for your question. Normally, the "just in case" only shows up the first time when you sign in with a Microsoft account. If that didn't happen for you, it's not a big deal as long as the authenticator finished adding the account like I showed in the video. If you were adding an account other than Microsoft - say, Facebook - that screen may not appear anyway. Please let me know if my answer doesn't clarify! Thanks. ~John

      Thanks for asking! When you go to a site to add the authenticator on your phone, below the window to scan a QR code, it usually says something like "Add manually." You click on that option and it will normally give you a code to place into the Authenticator after you've hit the + sign to add an account. So, how exactly is this 'more secure' than an SMS message code to my phone? Doesn't my outlook password + the SMS code = 2FA? Thank you in advance.

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Here's how Google's AI explains it: "Authenticator apps are more secure than SMS for two-factor authentication (2FA) because they are more difficult for hackers to intercept. Authenticator apps keep codes local to your device and don't send them unencrypted over the internet. Codes reset every 30 to 60 seconds, making it difficult for cybercriminals to steal them. SMS messages are not end-to-end encrypted."
      Hackers can access SMS messages by a variety of methods.
      Hope that explains it. Thanks for asking. ~John

    Now If your phone was lost,how would you be able to log in to that website?

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. Most websites give you codes to download and store just in case that happens. Others simply ask you to create more than one method of recovery - such as an email address or a phone number (obviously, a different number than the phone with the authenticator). With this in mind, I can't give you a set answer because it's up to the individual website, app or program. Of course, if you are allowing your phone to back up, if you had to replace the lost phone, you'd simply restore the authenticator app from the back up and you'd be good to go. ~John

  • @bonbonm3172

    When I set up this app, I don’t recall it asking me for an alternate email address just in case. Is there anywhere in that app where I could see that info? Can I add it after this is already been set up and if so how? Or would I have to start over again by turning off two factor authentication in my email and then closing this Microsoft authenticator account? Can you even close the Microsoft authenticator account? When I set up this app, it had the email that I wanted to protect as the “recovery account”, which I don’t think is correct. This should be the just in case email it never asked me for. How would I be able to get a code from that account if I can’t log in because I need a code from the authenticator app to log in? I did enter a second outlook email to the list of emails in which I turned the two factor authentication off, so I hope I’d be able to do that but I’m not sure if it’ll work.

    • @4Keystone
      @4Keystone  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Back up recovery methods are not a function of the Authenticator app. Recovery emails, SMS phone numbers, etc. are set in each account. Some offer other ways, too. For instance, Wordpress gives you a series of recovery codes should the authenticator fail. If you have an email account where the recovery email is the same as the account itself, you need to change that before something happens and it's too late/ ~John

      If you were setting up a new Microsoft account on a computer, you could use the Authenticator to sign-in initially. However, once the account is set up, Windows does not give you the option to sign-in with the Authenticator. It's not the fault of the Authenticator - it's that Windows give you the options of password, PIN, fingerprint, facial recognition, picture password, physical key for log in but not the Authenticator. (Note: not all those options are available on every Windows PC.) ~John
