If you want another recommendation "FIREARMS: a global history" by Kennith Chase has one of the most fascinating and compelling theories on why western Europe developed gunpowder weapons as far and as well as they did when middle eastern and Asian powers had access to the technology far sooner and on the surface a much more robust economy to further their development. I won't spoil the thesis. Its fascinating.

From my Memory the way to install stainless steel is to make it replace one of the expansions you don't want to have from Kindgodms and thus launching it as an "expansion" Thanks to @Magivk Meister for the comment. It's actually simple. Download SS6.3 install it to your Medieval 2 Total war directory folder in the folder called mods, then install SS6.4 in the same place. Download the bugfix compilations 1.27 and put them in the same place and then make a copy of the medieval2.exe, rename it to kindoms.exe and just place it where in the same place you had the medieval2.exe. Badabing-badaboom now you have a working Stainless Steel Game. No need to remove expansions or that kind of crap.

The music that starts @27:15 is one of the most sublime pieces of campaign map music from any game, never mind just total war, ever composed. 👌 For those interested, it’s ironically called “Field of Blood”. M2TW is in the view of myself and many others, the absolute pinnacle of Total War, after this they really started losing the magic sauce, only to briefly recapture some of the brilliance with Shogun 2..
Rome 1 and Medieval 2 were the best Total War Games imo. I love Warhammer Total War but man the game has taken so many steps both forward and back over the years.
I just realised how much of socialist I am in this game I always raise taxes as high as I can without my cites and castles falling into rebellion and I end up having not much in the way of a population to recruit units yet another reason why socialism doesn’t work.

I really miss the simple things from TW. Building watchtowers and forts wherever you want. Having to make ships to ferry units. Having to send a diplomat to a country if you want to deal with them, commanders that actually have unique traits and speeches, cutscenes for spy missions/crusades etc.
as far as I am aware the only thing that the campaign difficulty in M2TW does is affect the rate and severity that relations degrade. The only thing battle difficulty affects is the stats the AI units have. Edit: as to the road thing I'd argue that roads are a legitimate function of the state because the primary purpose is to allow the quick redeployment of troops but nowadays people have coopted it for economic means (not that that is a bad thing).

I haven't played base Midevil in so long. Usually when I play it has the Third Age mod. Got my nostalgia kicking in.
