To be fair 5th ed D&D is more like old school versions of D&D that requires more rulings than rules. I felt that while 3.0 & 3.5 at first looked like it was customizable, it was more like a straight jacket. Example: I want my fighter to leap from the balcony, grab the chandelier, & drop onto the orc threatening the npc. In 3.5 Do you have Acrobatics? What feats do you have? What is your skill levels etc... In old school D&D & 5th edition it depends on how "realistic" or hardass the GM wants to be. If he wants to be more cinematic the GM could just ask for example, for the player to roll 1d20 and try to roll under the players dexterity, then make a to hit roll to smash the orc, Yoiks and Away! Or maybe roll 1d20 add your dex modifier based on your armor, add your level. The target number is 20. Or what ever. It is more "work" for the GM but learning to "wing it" & then be consistant is a GM skill. It gets easier the more you do it.

5th edition combat feels really boring as a range focused ranger. Yea I can reach anything with a longbow and through level up feats basically garuntee I hit unless I roll below a 9, but it's annoying watching everyone do all this damage and all these abilties and I'm just doing a 1d8 roll or 2.
Felix Felice AD&D was where I cut my teeth, but 3.5e streamlined some of the clunkiness (universal XP table for one) and massively expanded options and flexibility. Love em both for different reasons!
