While I was in the NICU with our second, my husband was asking me how to get the toddler to drink water. This boy needs flavor more than hydration I swear. I told him if you want him to drink water get yourself a cup of water. Put it down walk away, then whenever the toddler drinks it go "hey that was mine". When I worked at a daycare, I would try to make a game out of trying new foods. Most people become picky eaters not initially out of a fear of food, but a fear of what comes after if they dont like it. In the south (Louisiana specifically) it's still really common to force a child to finish their meal. It reinforces the narrative that even though they don't like it, they MUST do it. Which almost sounds like a good life lesson, until one realizes they opt to no longer try new foods and stick to what they know. Giving children, and people really, a neutral space to try foods without the pressure of finishing them really reframes the way they see their whole relationship with food. Anyways sorry to ramble! This is a great tip and reminded me of my daycare years🥺
My parents always had me do a “try it bite” and wouldn’t make me eat it all if i didn’t like it. Now i love exploring different foods, even if it doesn’t sound like I would like it
As a proud citizen of Louisiana, I do not claim anyone who does this. I literally don't know a single person down here that forces their kids to finish their plate. The only time I ever have seen a parent do this, is if a kid wants dessert. Even then, they're not forced to finish it, they just have to eat a specific amount. Also, if they still refuse to eat the food, then the parents usually say okay and just don't give the kid the dessert.

Yeah, I eat like absolutely NOTHING (probs only 6 things) and my main problem is the texture, one time I was eating an egg, and the bottom was smooth instead of that normal texture and I didn't eat it, this happened like 5 times. Also, I think the smell of steak is good, but the chewiness and the rest I don't like, but the smell and taste are amazing, I would eat it if I didn't have that ick

tip from a picky eater: no method has ever worked on someone like me other than being hand fed. autism and adhd made me very picky about texture and taste, but being introduced to new things by my mom was familiar and made the task much easier to approach
Thanks for saying that. My two, particularly my son just refuse to try veggies apart from carrots and peas. I have tried everything and I do eat them myself. It's very frustrating.
@@mamadab2563 I know this is old but I wanted to suggest also looking into sensory diets to try and see if that helps, if you haven't already. You can check with their pediatrician(s) to make sure it's covering all the nutritional bases before you make any massive changes, obv. Thankfully since we tend to be such picky eaters, the autism community has a lot of info out there about sensory safe diets to help parents out. So if any of the picky-ness is sensory, I'm sure you can find some help. :)
*As a child who had autism, and a mother of two herself, it also truly helps if the parents are eating the veggies too. You are a model to your child. My mom always tried to make me eat food she wouldn’t even eat or try herself. Kinda shows the kid that it’s safe and it truly is good.* Butter and some seasoning also goes a long way. I’ve never had issues with my two (both under 8) eating veggies, but one does dislike brussel sprouts however that’s just their genuine opinion of brussel sprouts lol. It also helps with little kids if you tell them what it is, how it grows, etc. They like knowing and being educated.
Exactly! I swear all these kids that won't eat vegetables must have parents that don't eat vegetables. If you aren't eating it how can you expect your kids to eat it??
Im not a parent (Im 18 haha) but this also works for pets! Sometimes we need to put medication in my dog’s food but he smells something different and doesn’t eat it, but then if you pretend to eat his food and make some “Mmm!” Sounds he gets all excited and eats it. Guess it works since dogs kinda think just like 2 year old humans!
brussel sprouts: look at these cute tiny cabbages! aren't they cool?! if it's cool it's more fun, it got my nephew to eat them. broccoli spears: don't these look like little trees? they aren't, but isn't that cool? anything can be cool as long as you don't lie about what the thing is (hence broccoli isn't really trees) I babysat him a lot which meant I didn't have full parental authority which was pretty draconian anyways, I had to improvise.
My step son loved veggies as a toddler. Veggies, milk and juice. Occasionally he would eat a hot dog, but we didn't think he was ever going to eat meat. Which was fine. He was a dream to feed. His bio mom isn't big into cooking and when he was with her it was always fast food and junk food. She would sometimes make hamburger helper, which had meat so he wouldn't eat it. She would chew my husband out about us giving him what he wanted to eat. When he was 7 or 8 we were at my moms and my dad made tacos. Stepson was eating veggies on a tortilla, but kept saying the meat smelled good. He finally tried it. He is now 17, 6ft 3, 320 lbs and still prefers veggies over anything. He still will only eat certain meats.
Glad it worked out! It's better to have kids try lots of different foods when they are young because then their body is less likely to reject it later in life, but the fact the kid liked veggies right off the bat is GOLDEN. That's usually the biggest challenge so it's nice to hear that isn't the case for all kids.
When my son was a toddler, we also thought he would grow up vegetarian. We eat vegetables as much as meat, but we noticed he would eat all his veggies and a little or no meat/chicken. Thankfully, he still likes veggies at 11 yrs old.
I'm gonna send every picky eater video to my mom, I'm an only child and she does not know about the blessing she raised. I gobbled up everything she gave me
Yes!! I do this all the time - just straight up pretend its my food and even say no sometimes and then “give in” and let them have some. Works like a charm
My recommended techniques: 1. Try changing the texture, temperature, or flavor but it doesn't have to be all at once. 2. When in doubt smother it in sauce. 3. Blend into a fruit smoothie. Banana, Strawberries, Oranges ect.. any strong flavored and sweet fruits can mask the flavor of veggies. Add honey or chocolate syrup to help 4. Roast it! Roasting most vegetables and herbs transforms them completely. Brussels Sprouts become chard on the outside but so soft and delicious on the inside. Dip in your favorite sauce for a delicious treat or side dish. 5. Do what this mom did and make them think it's their idea or something like that. 6. Make their favorite foods with it. If they love mac and cheese and would eat only that every day forever, get mac and cheese pasta made with veggies or plant protein (likely in gluten free or keto sections) 7. Not the healthiest choice but bribery can be a last ditch effort. "If you eat most of your vegetables. You get to have your favorite dessert after!". I would only suggest that if their favorite dessert is something not too unhealthy.
This same exact thing happened to me with my fourth grade teacher and I remember it so vividly. She was just in yard duty during our recess and she had a little plastic container filled with all sorts of colors of bell peppers, and in her other hand, a small container of ranch. She was just watching and snacking and I thought wow that looks really good and shes so chill about it. Mind you I hated bell peppers but the minute I got home I had some bell peppers with ranch and ever since then I am an avid bell pepper eater!
Something i do for the kids i babysit is i put on episodes from cartoons they really like where characters are trying new foods or just eating a food thats new to the kiddo and give it to them as an optional snack and if they dont like it then i end up eating it
Lol, that reminds me a little of something that worked on me. Instead of it being characters on TV, it was just play characters, I was a cat. My mom had tuna and told me if I was a cat, then I should like tuna. Literally remember being upset that her logic was spot on, and obviously I couldn't drop the cat act, so I had a tuna sandwich. Ended up liking it.
It is so important to give kids a choice. Especially with picky eaters! Forcing them will get nowhere. It'll have a huge chance to mess up their relationship with food. But giving them patience, option, and the ability to try it on their own terms WILL encourage them to try. Curiousity is a much stronger motivator than pressure when it coems to food ❤
And try seeing if it's a texture issue. Some kids are picky only because they don't like the feeling of the food, not the taste. I loved apples but would instantly feel sick if I tried eating a mashed one, like in apple sauce.
What most people don't understand is little ones learn by watching adults if they do not see you eat it they will not eat it because they don't think it's safe once you show them that you can eat it giving them the option like this is actually really good and teaches them how to make their own decisions😊
Unless it’s a texture thing like one of my kids have. Anything like apple sauce or mashed potatoes are a no. If it smells strong then no. If it looks weird then no.
When my son was a toddler I used to tell him "don't steal my chicken" or whatever it was I was eating. He found it hilarious to steal food off my plate and would laugh and laugh. I was laughing internally as I was getting him to eat and eat new foods. 😂
As a kid- well, nearly an adult- but kid enough- I would fall for this trick. Even nowadays, if my mom is eating something, I'm much more likely to try it than if she were to give me something to try.
A friendly reminder also that if they don’t like a certain veggie one way, they may like it prepared a different way! For example I HATE brussels sprouts unless they’ve been roasted- then I LOVE them and eat multiple servings! But I can’t stand roasted carrots! I only like carrots either steamed or raw! I also never liked sweet potatoes by themselves, but learned if I have them mixed with other veggies it’s super yummy! It’s all about the preparations sometimes and not necessarily about the food itself ☺️
For my case, from childhood until now that I'm a parent myself, i have certain veggies and fishes that i cant swallow no matter how they're cooked. I've tried so many ways of cooking them with different recipes from different countries and still no go😔i was so worried my kids will be like me but thankfully, their answer to liking veggies, is to cook them with meat.
@@user-mAfuNqrSe020x I’m the same way! And funnily enough my kiddo likes things that I don’t like too! Lol at least the good thing about being a grown up is that we don’t have to make ourselves eat the gross things anymore 🤣
I thought "came inside from playing all by herself" meant that she elected to come inside without prompting, but the actual joke was so much better haha
I can't believe i didnt think of this before. My kid wouldnt eat their veggies last night, but drank a bunch of *my* warm-spicy tea made with cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper. 🫠
My brother and I are only two years apart, so when we were little and my dad was deployed, mom would just make one big plate of food instead of making us each our own plates. We always wanted to eat off of her plate anyway. It was the easiest way to feed all of us, and it meant less dishes to clean up.
According to the biography by Alan Villiers, this is a significant aspect of how the explorer Captain James Cook conquered scurvy. He instructed the mess to serve sauerkraut to officers only at first, until the regular sailors demanded to have some too.
what i like the most about this method is that you're not forcing anything to happen, so there's no bad experiences or emotional baggage associated with trying new foods.
This is actually a good method, if you don’t force the kid to eat it and act like nothings changed they’re more likely to eat it. Introducing new foods to them when they’re young helps prevent ARFID, which is an eating disorder that develops when you’re young, it’s all about textures, tastes and smells. If you can find what a kid likes without forcing them to eat, then you can help them become more comfortable with food.
I hide veggies in their food. Blending veggies in their pasta sauce and using veggie noodles, they like salads so thats a plus. Cant have pasta without garlic bread of course. Balanced meal! They dont even notice 🤭 I even do it with baked goods sometimes, and since i run a bakery, i like to think im really good at it. I just ask them to taste test a new recipe im trying, they dont question and just eat it, love it, now its a new dessert we have in the house. Not to be an almond mom though, we love our snacks and sugars and carbs lol. Just gotta squeeze that nutrients in everywhere we can
As an autistic person with ARFID, please do not hide foods in your child’s food that they’ve expressed they don’t like, even If they’re not disabled in any way. Please consider the reason they may not like it and actually listen to them instead of forcing. It can seriously mess up their relationship with food and trust in others. Talk to a doctor if you think your child’s nutrition is suffering because of their food avoidance. That’s a sign of ARFID, if not, try to encourage them to eat foods they haven’t tried by letting them watch you eat them around the house. Usually that makes food more appetizing to children.
The voice is the same actor who plays Moxie from Helluva Boss/ Zim from Invader Zim... Richard Horvitz I think..? I'm surprised I'm not tired of it yet.
My mum was always great with foods I didn't like. She would never force me to eat them, but she wouldn't cater to my every whim either. She would blend them into the sauce so I could get the nutrients without the taste, cut them up really small so I wouldn't notice them so much, or, alternately, cut them really big so I could choose to not eat them if I wasn't feeling up to it.
This is so funny and effective in the same time. Because growing up my little brother who is 9 years younger than me. Always wants to eat what's I'm eating just because he can 🤣
I have a niece who accidentally ate a hot pepper when she was very young, so she refused to even eat the sweet ones. I cooked some with onions, garlic, balsamic vinegar, and various herbs before blending them into a pasta sauce. She told me that mine was the best spaghetti she had ever tried. She got a healthier meal, and I got a kick out of helping her find a way that she enjoys eating sweet peppers. 😊
@@SamriddhiSharma128 to be fair I find it better to cut them really finely and cook them low and slow! Less washing up 🤣 certain vegetables I can't even think about though like mushrooms 🤣 (are mushrooms even a veggie? 🤣)
I got my ex to eat veggies by grating carrots, green peppers, onions, and zucchini and/or summer squash into my spaghetti sauce. He couldn't tell what was in it but loved it.
I have 4 kids under 5 and knew where this was going right away 😂. Literally works every time. I make them food, they don't eat it. I sit down with the SAME food in my own bowl and they all crowd around asking for my food. I make sure to serve myself extra because I always know ill be sharing lol!
The best thing I've found is getting them to help grow and prepare things. I have a 9 year old that HATES chicken nuggets and carbonated drinks but happily makes and eats her own sushi, wraps and salad.... also helps to not make them feel pressure to eat certain foods. What they chose to swallow is one of the only true choices some kids have depending on parenting styles. Their slice of independence.

tip from a picky eater: no method has ever worked on someone like me other than being hand fed. autism and adhd made me very picky about texture and taste, but being introduced to new things by my mom was familiar and made the task much easier to approach
This is so true. Everything is 100x more delicious when it's in mommy's plate
It still is. I'm 50 and my mom is 74.
*As a child who had autism, and a mother of two herself, it also truly helps if the parents are eating the veggies too. You are a model to your child. My mom always tried to make me eat food she wouldn’t even eat or try herself. Kinda shows the kid that it’s safe and it truly is good.*
Butter and some seasoning also goes a long way.
@@giftofthewild6665 I dont eat veggies cause broccoli reminds me of my mother, very ugly 😹
brussel sprouts: look at these cute tiny cabbages! aren't they cool?!
if it's cool it's more fun, it got my nephew to eat them. broccoli spears: don't these look like little trees? they aren't, but isn't that cool? anything can be cool as long as you don't lie about what the thing is (hence broccoli isn't really trees)
I babysat him a lot which meant I didn't have full parental authority which was pretty draconian anyways, I had to improvise.
@@Ireallydislikehandles They mightve meant teenager
When it kept going after you said "but the 5 year old is not alone" got me 😂😂❤
The overflowing dish rack is so relatable lol
Tried it. My kid came in, said “ew”, made a puke face, and ran away 😭
😂
Same, same. My 4 year old still eats with her eyes
Mine said eww silly mummy 😅
It still worked because they tried it, even if they didn't like it lol
@@yourshoulderdevil5229 no no, I tried it. My son did not lol
I read that as he's "3,320 lbs." LOL!
@@kelqueen9998what does it actually say because I'm confused?
Edit:nevermind I found out what it said
Glad it worked out! It's better to have kids try lots of different foods when they are young because then their body is less likely to reject it later in life, but the fact the kid liked veggies right off the bat is GOLDEN. That's usually the biggest challenge so it's nice to hear that isn't the case for all kids.
Yeah same here. I am 27 and still can't stand the texture, smell or how a certain meat tastes .
When my son was a toddler, we also thought he would grow up vegetarian. We eat vegetables as much as meat, but we noticed he would eat all his veggies and a little or no meat/chicken. Thankfully, he still likes veggies at 11 yrs old.
"Boring grown up food" LMAOAO
I'm gonna send every picky eater video to my mom, I'm an only child and she does not know about the blessing she raised. I gobbled up everything she gave me
as a teen, imma go try this on myself
Same... just not raw unless they're green peppers 😂
I don't care for ranch, much less ketchup, but caesar salad dressing or oyster sauce? Yes please! I've had put it on anything!
Yes!! I do this all the time - just straight up pretend its my food and even say no sometimes and then “give in” and let them have some. Works like a charm
My recommended techniques:
Add honey or chocolate syrup to help
If they love mac and cheese and would eat only that every day forever, get mac and cheese pasta made with veggies or plant protein (likely in gluten free or keto sections)
7. Not the healthiest choice but bribery can be a last ditch effort. "If you eat most of your vegetables. You get to have your favorite dessert after!". I would only suggest that if their favorite dessert is something not too unhealthy.
I love every single thing about this.
“she’s five of course she’s not alone she has her two year old brother watching her” 😂😂😂 had me rolling to Egypt💀💀💀💀
I have no children but I watched anyway because this is so entertaining. It's so funny and the voice just makes it even better😭😭
Just force them. Who cares.
Jk
What most people don't understand is little ones learn by watching adults if they do not see you eat it they will not eat it because they don't think it's safe once you show them that you can eat it giving them the option like this is actually really good and teaches them how to make their own decisions😊
@@yourstruly3161basically all animals do this. We learn what foods are good by watching our mother eat. Birds, deer, whales, everything
Unless it’s a texture thing like one of my kids have. Anything like apple sauce or mashed potatoes are a no. If it smells strong then no. If it looks weird then no.
Yeah. Honestly whenever kids see or eat their parents food it suddenly taste better🤤
When my son was a toddler I used to tell him "don't steal my chicken" or whatever it was I was eating. He found it hilarious to steal food off my plate and would laugh and laugh. I was laughing internally as I was getting him to eat and eat new foods. 😂
As a kid- well, nearly an adult- but kid enough-
I would fall for this trick.
Carrots are best raw imo.
I agree 😊
I thought "came inside from playing all by herself" meant that she elected to come inside without prompting, but the actual joke was so much better haha
Nah my mom would just yell at me to eat it and say something like “if you don’t eat this you’re not eating for the rest of the night!” 💀
I can't believe i didnt think of this before. My kid wouldnt eat their veggies last night, but drank a bunch of *my* warm-spicy tea made with cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper. 🫠
food tastes better off someone elses plate
"She has her 2 year old brother watching" so relatable
OH MY GOD. IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.
MY MUM DID THIS TO ME WHEN I WAS LITTLE XD
most of the cherry tomatoes would just never make it out of my gramma's garden when I was little, lmao. I even ate the green ones.
i work at a daycare, and every day whatever they're eating is my favorite food ever!
“Otherwise, you’re gonna risk it!” 🤣
My brother and I are only two years apart, so when we were little and my dad was deployed, mom would just make one big plate of food instead of making us each our own plates.
Yeah, this works on humans in general. Mirroring is a common trait in social species.
I love this! It's also because kids learn by watching. You don't realize how much your kids look up to you.
Her 2 year old brother is watching her😂 I have a 5, 3 and 1 year old and I’m due with number four in March. I felt this😂😂
very true! kids want to do what you do because you’re the coolest
If you give a pig a pancake they will want some syrup to go with! 🤣
these sweet hearts remind me of the book 🥰
if you give a mouse a cookie and if you give a dog a doughnut...😊
what i like the most about this method is that you're not forcing anything to happen, so there's no bad experiences or emotional baggage associated with trying new foods.
"choking is not fun for any one"
suicidal depressos: 😮💨
This is actually a good method, if you don’t force the kid to eat it and act like nothings changed they’re more likely to eat it. Introducing new foods to them when they’re young helps prevent ARFID, which is an eating disorder that develops when you’re young, it’s all about textures, tastes and smells. If you can find what a kid likes without forcing them to eat, then you can help them become more comfortable with food.
Thank you for mentioning ARFID! Other disabilities like Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder also can come into play with this subject.
What children will eat:
My mom putting my food in a smily face just hit differently
I have literally no plans to have kids but I still paid attention and watched all the way through lol
Every moment of this is perfection
I hide veggies in their food. Blending veggies in their pasta sauce and using veggie noodles, they like salads so thats a plus. Cant have pasta without garlic bread of course. Balanced meal! They dont even notice 🤭
I even do it with baked goods sometimes, and since i run a bakery, i like to think im really good at it. I just ask them to taste test a new recipe im trying, they dont question and just eat it, love it, now its a new dessert we have in the house. Not to be an almond mom though, we love our snacks and sugars and carbs lol. Just gotta squeeze that nutrients in everywhere we can
If you put it in wraps you can sometimes sneak in things without cooking them (Which can sometimes change the nutritional value)
I love that the ai has a sense of humor and emotion 🤩
The voice is the same actor who plays Moxie from Helluva Boss/ Zim from Invader Zim... Richard Horvitz I think..? I'm surprised I'm not tired of it yet.
She did a voice over with her voice and put ai over it so that’s why
My parents always just said "you dont have to eat it but if you dont you dont get to eat dessert or watch shows" worked every time lol
my kids: "you can keep your snack" 😭
I’m a teen and those are my fave food
Definitely works my kids are scavengers even when they have their own snacks 😂❤
I’m just happy she said ranch makes everything better 😂
My mum was always great with foods I didn't like. She would never force me to eat them, but she wouldn't cater to my every whim either.
She would blend them into the sauce so I could get the nutrients without the taste, cut them up really small so I wouldn't notice them so much, or, alternately, cut them really big so I could choose to not eat them if I wasn't feeling up to it.
Food just tastes better when it isn't yours 😂
Yea that works but then a lot of the time they take one bite and still hate it lol
But they still tried it, baby steps😊 Also remember to try and find out what about it they dislike, for me it's usually texture.
Sometimes people just dislike things.
This is basically what my mom did with me, she acted like everything was delicious and I just went along with it lol.
Can we have a trick to make a fully grown adult eat veggies...asking for a friend
😂
Bake and blend works like a charm, you can add to your stew with some broth, your pasta, curry and whatever else that requires a sauce or a base.
“Ranch makes everything better” finally someone gets it
this entire video was amazing LOL from the commentary to the tips. I loved every second of it
Yeah my kids would take one look at that bowl and say "no thanks, can I have muffins?" 😂
Everything about this video and your personality is amazing! Love this!
This works like a charm. Always “can I try just to see if I like it” Hehehe
as soon as you said "But don't get their plates" I knew what was going on!
This was delightfully, surprisingly funny.
This is SOOO true. This woman just narrated my daily life
Did something similar. I just started eating the veggies like i've never tasted anything better. It turned into a veggie eating competition.😂
I have 4 kids under 5 and knew where this was going right away 😂. Literally works every time. I make them food, they don't eat it. I sit down with the SAME food in my own bowl and they all crowd around asking for my food. I make sure to serve myself extra because I always know ill be sharing lol!
Works like a charm with mine 😂. Snacks, dinners, lunches, any foods 🤣
I just love how it ends immediately after "can I try they'll say" 😂
The best thing I've found is getting them to help grow and prepare things. I have a 9 year old that HATES chicken nuggets and carbonated drinks but happily makes and eats her own sushi, wraps and salad.... also helps to not make them feel pressure to eat certain foods. What they chose to swallow is one of the only true choices some kids have depending on parenting styles. Their slice of independence.
I'm not a parent and never will be, but loved this! So smart.
Me, not planning to ever have kids yet watches videos on parenting tips for some reason: “THAT’S GENIUS.”
This definitely worked on me growing up and I'm so glad 😁
That’s so funny. I’ve been doing this since I was a kid babysitting. 😂
Your FUNNY🤣 “What’s that they say”..”Can I try it that say” 😂🤣
Diabolical. I love it. ❤
