You also can figure this way. Whatever the percentage take from 100. In this case 100-70=30 & then multiple by the price 30 x $5.00 = $1.50. Another example 15% on item for $4.00. 100-15=85 ×$4.00= $3.40.

That's a really smart way of calculating this. It shows she actually understand percentages and is not just memorising a formula in textbook and inputting numbers.
I love that you gave her time to answer. I think a lot of times kids know the answers but need to sort it out in their head first. Usually teachers or other adults move passed them or assume they don't know if they can't answer immediately.
this is so true and it can make or break there confidence in math!!! letting them get to the answer allows them to reassure themselves they did it right and little by little they won’t second guess and know it quicker!!
Same with language. When kids (mostly older toddlers and on) don’t quite know what word they’re thinking, often adults will say “use your words”. Well, how do you use words you don’t know? We wouldn’t expect adults to come up with the word in a foreign language like that, why do we expect children to?
this would happen to me and i would get so stressed out because math wasn’t my strong suit but i’ve realized i just need more time than others to try and figure it out
Agreed! I know I at times need to remind myself to have patience and just give a little more time to young children. Most of the time we are in such a rush we end up completing tasks kids can do independently.
My niece can do a calculation like this, but when asked she’ll immediately say “I don’t know”. Has to be pressed to actually do the work, and I think there are a lot of kids like that nowadays.
this just changed my life, literally just from her saying it a different way than i was taught. "70 cents off each dollar" just makes figuring it out so much easier!
The more she does it, the more comfortable and the fastest she will become. Making new connections in a child’s brain is so important. Great job mom!!!
This is exactly why I always struggled with math! It wasn’t until adulthood that I was able to figure out how to use different thinking to solve the problem, ESPECIALLY with percentages! Most of us need to know the “why” not just the how. I love that you shared this! Thank you!

seriously why did no one ever tell us this??? i graduated last year and she just did a better job at teaching me than any of my math teachers ever did.
For bigger values you can find a smaller percentage and multiply to get your answer. Ex: 70% off 1300 10% of 1300 = 130 130×7 = 910 1300-910 = 490 This works for me because I can get the value to something a bit easier to work with, especially when it's not a nice even number.
@@morayoadedapo2457yes this! It's such an easy way to work. But I didn't learn this in school, it was the many years working retail in my younger years
I'm a teacher too, and this is not far off from Task-based learning we use in language education. Basically rather than the goal being learning a specific thing or completing an exercise, you set a broader task that naturally teaches the required skillset. In this case the task could be making 5 dinners this week on a budget using clearance items. Students have to combine skills to meaningfully learn how to use new ideas and knowledge.

This is so beautiful. Not only are you teaching your previous daughter common sense math but you can tell that she appreciates the useful nature of the lesson. I did things like this with my son starting really young. I spoke to him with complicated vocabulary and had him figure out real life math as you encounter it in everyday math. When my son got his college scholarship and I was praising all his hard work, he hugged me and told me that the respect I showed him as a child who was capable of understanding complicated concepts was the reason he loves school and learning. You will both benefit from this type of respect for knowledge.
This is so good. More parents should teach mental math in the store like this. Most adults would pull out the calculator app on their phone. Best mom award for you
Most adults didn't learn it this way. Most all adults learned: multiply the amount by the percentage and then subtract that amount from the original cost. Mental math has nothing to do with it. The way it was taught, it's just easier to get the calculator.
Don't forget that plenty of adults have autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, or even just didn't get to go to school. Not every adult is able to do math. I personally wasn't able to learn (still not) because of the Autism/ADHD.
@@QuiltedMadness yes that is true but we were taught quick mental math. Remember the sheets of paper with all the equations that we had either 5 or 10 minutes to do as many as we could in 2nd and 3rd grade but we tend to for get that as after 4th we were made to focus on the more complex that needed us to use a calculator. We were never shown how mental maths like this could be implemented in or day to day life so it became a forgotten skill

Well done! I was watching her figure it out with a huge grin on my face, feeling proud like I was watching my own kid, bless her heart 😊
Me too! I was cheering her on!!😊
Me too! 😅 so sweet.
Yeeees
Little girl explained it very well. Helped me understand percentages 👍🏾
Woman waited and gave her time to complete her process even when she seemed to finish at the wrong answer.
That's a great teacher. Waiting rather than correcting is a skill.
How did she seem to finish at the wrong answer?
That's a really smart way of calculating this. It shows she actually understand percentages and is not just memorising a formula in textbook and inputting numbers.
I love how the mother isn’t rushing the kid I love that!❤️❤️
The amount of adults I met who can’t do this because they were just taught how and not why is astounding, excellent job!!
Love it
This is amazing! As a mom and a teacher I applaud you!
She’s so smart and beautiful! Way to go mama!
I have never been able to work out percentages (I'm 69 years old). This lovely little girl taught me how to work it out. Bless you ❤
I love that you gave her time to answer.
I love how proud she was at the end. As she should be!
this just changed my life, literally just from her saying it a different way than i was taught. "70 cents off each dollar" just makes figuring it out so much easier!
Bless that beautiful child. She's so smart. Good job, Mom!
❤❤❤❤❤
You waited..quietly- and she did it!!! ❤🎉 she’s so smart and cute 🥰
For real! Smarty pants- that sweet smile Baby, tell momma she need auntie to watch over you I’m right there! Precious child.😇
It's called being patient with your kids and giving them a chance to work the problem themselves.
The more she does it, the more comfortable and the fastest she will become. Making new connections in a child’s brain is so important. Great job mom!!!
Love the way you could see her mind working and calculating, she’s going places!!!
you just taught ME an easier way to count percentage!!! i’m only using that method now!
Love that you have patience with her and don't rush her or pressure her. Great job mama AND baby girl!
💯. I keep telling my wife to stop blurting out all the answers for the kids, before they get to even think for themselves!!! 🙄😒
Smart!!! I like how she takes her time and gets it. Freaking awesome. She's waaay ahead of the curve
Absolutely love this we need more mums like this.
She is so adorable! God bless! ❤️❤️❤️
This is exactly why I always struggled with math! It wasn’t until adulthood that I was able to figure out how to use different thinking to solve the problem, ESPECIALLY with percentages! Most of us need to know the “why” not just the how. I love that you shared this! Thank you!
They taught us in a way to only be employees that’s why 😅
I call that sale math.😂
i never learned percentages in school and im a senior in highschool and this genuinely helped me out so much. i wish our school system was as effective as this little girls simple sentence was
seriously why did no one ever tell us this??? i graduated last year and she just did a better job at teaching me than any of my math teachers ever did.
For bigger values you can find a smaller percentage and multiply to get your answer.
Ex: 70% off 1300
10% of 1300 = 130
130×7 = 910
1300-910 = 490
This works for me because I can get the value to something a bit easier to work with, especially when it's not a nice even number.
@@morayoadedapo2457yes this! It's such an easy way to work. But I didn't learn this in school, it was the many years working retail in my younger years
@@beatlemaniac909that's the absolute truth. Wishing you much success in the real world. Daily math when shopping and working will sharpen you up too
Same I’m a sophomore though
I wish I had someone in life who helped me with math like this as a child. Real life situations always helped me learn easier and it stuck with me.
She's amazing. At her age i wasnt eben at that level
I'm 50 years old, worked in the education system for many of those years..and this is the most brilliant teaching method I've ever seen.
Really? It’s common sense
@@dena1007 have you been to a public school? Sat in on a day of education in our federally funded system? Common sense is a lost concept
@@dena1007i learned the part over whole technique
I'm a teacher too, and this is not far off from Task-based learning we use in language education. Basically rather than the goal being learning a specific thing or completing an exercise, you set a broader task that naturally teaches the required skillset. In this case the task could be making 5 dinners this week on a budget using clearance items. Students have to combine skills to meaningfully learn how to use new ideas and knowledge.
@@dominiebiggs4203 you’re talking about public school in a red state. Where math is woke and learning is via fox entertainment news
I’m 36 and I wouldn’t have been able to do that in my head. You go girl
I think it’s easier just to have my five dollars by 10. $.50 since you’re only paying 30% $.50 times three. The other seven is the discount.
3x15 =15 add the decimal 1.50 way easier
What a smart cookie! Lil Mama got the brains and the beauty 💗
Teacher here. Letting kids think about it how it makes sense to them is the best way to teach math. Good on this mom, letting her work through it.
Her lil face is just so beautiful when she smiles with the knowledge... ❤
Mama, you are doing a wonderful job!! We need more present parents like you! ❤
We sure do
Thanks for teaching me an easier way to figure that out. I’m 54 and really needed this!
What an adorable and sweet little girl!
Mom PLEASE consider making this channel a learning math channel with your daughter. So we can all learn together. I feel proud of learning percentages! God bless!
YESSSSSS !!!!! I was blown when she said so 70 centboff the doller... Like why cnt teachers just say that. All my life I been hating on math so bad. Plus being dyslexic didn't help. Ughhh I'm 38, and I would absolutely watch that channel
I second this!!! I'm almost 50 and never knew this. I'd LOVE a math teaching channel.
What a good momma and a very smart young lady! 👏
Such a smart and sweet girl! I loved watching her figure this out. Great job mama ❤
She did such a great job! ❤
Wow. 38 years old and this is the clearest explanation I've ever heard. 😊
❤❤❤ She calculated that in her head without a calculator!
❤❤❤Smart little girl.💯
What a sweet smart well behaved little girl. ❤
I was literally just mindblown. Im 23 and still havent learned how to do this, and this just taught me how in literally seconds. Thank you so much for teaching me this faster and easier than school ever did!!
Good job.👍
So sweet and smart! Good job mom! Great parenting and teaching using real life experience
I truly have never thought about it this way. It was so beautiful to see her be proud of her work. 😊
Today after my 22 years on this earth I've finally learned how to do percents. Thank you I've been bullied because I couldn't keep up with my peers in math and I've never been taught the easy way to do things only the way that the school are told to teach their kids. I will carry this with me forever, thank you💕🥺
That’s the smartest kid I’ve seen all month and I work for an elementary school! Well done mama! ❤
This beautiful little girl just taught me that in a way that my brain would actually accept. ❤ thanks kid!
I (and so many teachers) LOVE that you know its important to understand the concepts more than knowing the equation. This is how you grow learners who become flexible and innovative thinkers.
Bro knows more than I do
I was today years old when I knew that the percentage is taken out of each dollar 💵 💀
Dude same😂
I hope you know that’s how you count your tax 😭 on every dollar
70% off 5 one dollar bills is the same as 70% off 5$…. So
IKR ☠️
She
That was INCREDIBLE! What a simple yet effective way to teach your children. God bless you.
*BRILLIANT*
I love watching her work it out!
She did amazingly well.
My Dad always articulated his calculations when he was reading a newspaper or calculation some work, he was a carpenter. I learned a lot from him 😊 God bless his soul, I miss him so much ❤
I miss my daddy also it's been 3 week now 😢😢❤❤
My dad was also a carpenter who was extremely good at math 😊 I lost him in 2019, I miss him so much
So did my dad. Maybe that’s a carpenter thing. He could do math faster than a calculator. I lost him in 2022.
I just learned something new today!! She is so precious. Smart girl and good job mama.
What!!!!!
I love that you’re teaching her how to think
That way she can figure anything out in this life
Great job mom 🥰💕✨🦋
Thank you for letting her learn at her pace so she fully gets it. Too many adults dont conceptually understand basic math
I love when parents take the opportunity to teach their babies like this! My Mom did the same thing, if there was an opportunity to teach us something she made sure she took the time to explain and help us understand!
Beautiful understanding of the actual concepts required. Look how proud she is and rightfully so. Excellent job, Mom! 👍
She would be a great teacher when she grows up.❤
She made me proud. Good math skills Miss
