  • It may look easy, but standing and sitting with a walker can cause a fall or injury if you don’t do it correctly. This video will show you how to safely sit to stand and then stand to sit with a walker. Watch Dr. Jo show how to use a walker: • How to Use a Walker Co...
The goal with the sit to stand with a walker is to not grab the walker and pull it towards you when trying to stand up. Scoot to the edge of your chair. Slide your strong leg slightly back. Put one hand on the seat of the chair or an armrest, and the other on the walker. Lean forward to shift your weight standing up. Then repeat this in reverse to sit down with the walker.

@ Janice MacEachern - You would think that the medical personnel wouldn't even allow you to leave the hospital without the proper training!!! Hope you're doing well!

Great video! People really don't get trained to use walkers and tend to expect 3# of aluminum to support 100+ lbs pulling up, and preventing them from falling down.

Thanks! It's always surprising to see how little training people get.

Hi Dr. Jo 👋 I have a question. Mom is an overweight person with a none-bearing weight tolerance (ankle fractured, 4th week now), when she's stands up her good leg can't hold the whole weight (90kg), so someone needs to grab her from under the arms to help her stand up. This helps but it makes her so dependent. I'm not sure if we are we doing the right thing helping her out. What do you think? Is this correct? Thank you 🙏

Biggest problem is commode. Nothing on left to grab, I'll try the seat later. Can't really scoot on toilet seat.😊 other seats I'm adding pillows & books.

It should still work. If you are not working with a physical therapist, that would really be the best option. They can help you figure out what will work best for you.
