Just to update people... The newer M4 and probably the M2 appears to have had a refresh on the input ports for the front. They now are held together by two screws on either side instead of one on the top right on each input and don't appear to wobble at least on the version I have.

They are great interfaces - are they the USB/Firewire hybrids? You can chain them together with Firewire to get a huge number of ins and outs. In OSX you have to create a hybrid audio interface - there are several tutorials on the internet. The realtime reverb on the latency free monitoring is great for the talent when recording.

Julian, I stumbled onto an issue with this device and MOTU was able to reproduce it - Thanks for connecting with us on the matter - I'm sorry to see that you're having some trouble with this interface. I've taken your feedback and steps to reproduce the behavior with my M2 and M4 on my Windows machine here and can confirm that when setting the driver buffer size to the max value, it introduces distortion to my headphones/outputs. To be more specific though, this distortion is only present with MME (Wave) and Windows Audio (WDM) drivers (all drivers to choose from in Audacity), not ASIO drivers. This is to be expected when using a WDM or Wave based driver though, as they allocate resources poorly at too low or too high of buffer sizes. I've tested a few other interfaces as well here (from different manufacturers) and have also been able to reproduce this.If I'm using an ASIO DAW/host like Performer Lite or in your case, Adobe Audition, and choose the MOTU M Series ASIO driver, this issue does not occur. I highly recommend using the ASIO driver for any app that supports ASIO drivers - their coding and allocation of CPU resources is infinitely better than WDM only hosts (like Audacity). For all non-ASIO environments, it would be best to reduce the buffer size to 512 - this value doesn't pose an issue for me in my testing, perhaps with yours as well.
Well, UGH! Yes, the 1024 is needed as latency isn't a thing I need worry about and the lower workload is. So many issues with Windows 10 with these interfaces from the M-Audio Air (loved that interface but driver issues from Hades itself including a BSOD) to now the MOTU M2.

To set your gain 'properly', you need to know what level your converter is calibrated to. I think the most common is -18dBFS to -16dBFS (the digital meter). When analog gear is outputting 0dB VU (optimal level) it will show up on your digital meter as -18dBFS to -16dBFS. If you keep cranking up that analog gear louder and louder, to get the digital meter closer to 0dBFS, you'll risk overdriving and distorting the analog stages in your signal path (everything before the actual A to D conversion, including between the MOTU preamp and the converter chip).
Not only that, but the loudest peaks will very likely hit 0dBFS (clipping, ruined recording) because you ran out of headroom. That does not sound good. Think about it. At 0dBFS, your analog side is cranked to +18dB VU. Picture an analog VU meter pegged at +18dB. Get the picture? Then, you just hit 0dBFS, so you CLIPPED in digital. A clipped recording of distortion.
The best way is to keep your analog side at about 0dB VU. That will go in the computer at -18dBFS to -16dBFS. Great. Then, after the recording is done, you can normalize the track, to bring up the volume. Before you do this, you should know whether your mixing plugins are designed to work best at -18dBFS, or on normalized tracks. Don't worry about making it 'loud' until you get to the mastering stage.

After thinking about it for month and month, I finally pulled the trigger on the MOTU M4. I was thinking a lot about wether I need The M4 or if I should get a full out 4 channel interface, and in the end, the M4 would give me some features, that I really like. The line ins3 and 4, which I could use with - say - two DBX 286S, if I should ever need the additional mic inputs, or maybe for a stereo input. The Mix dial is another thing I sometimes love to use. But the completely digital controls for all inputs and outputs is the most important feature for me. I like hardware controls for fast changes, but I like digital controls for giving me the most control. Digital controls for the knobs is a genius move by MOTU and I really hope, more companies will pick that up in the future.

I have the Motu M4 and got it as an upgrade to my Scarlet 2i2 2nd Gen. I was a bit disappointed in terms of virtual instrument latency, as I was expecting better performance. The 2i2 can get slightly lower figures as it allows for more buffer settings. The sound of the headphone amp also seems to be slightly punchier than the M4. However, the good thing about the M4 is that the headphone amp has more output, and the round trip latency for the audio is lower than the 2i2. I love the extra outputs and the meters. So all in all, I am relatively satisfied with the purchase, especially for the price.

  • @markbarsamian

I appreciate this very thorough review. It helped me make the decision to buy this interface. Two bits of information that others might find useful: (1) One of my applications for this interface is to do location and outdoor recordings, with my Android phone as the recorder (using the USB Audio Recorder Pro app). I was concerned that the phone might not provide enough power for a bus-powered interface. But I am happy to report that my Moto G6 powered the MOTU M2 (with phantom on) for over 100 minutes before I got tired of testing and turned it off. (2) I want to point out that although USB C is very nice because it is a symmetrical plug, I am disappointed that on my devices with USB C jacks, there is a noticeable amount of play in the connection. The MOTU M2 is no exception: when the provided cable is plugged into the USB C jack, it can wiggle a lot. My Anker USB C cables also wiggle in the jack. I would rather have a USB B jack on the back of an interface. (Especially because for my outdoor recordings, the interface will be running while in a tote bag. I would be more confident in a USB B plug & jack being able to take some knocking around .) But overall, this is an excellent interface and I would choose it again.

    Hi Julian,
You didn't mentioned that this interface allows to record in with 32 bit depth.
Do you have some information about the AD conversion that Motu uses to achieve that? Is it a double converter technology like in the Zoom F6 (I would love a review with that interface by the way) or is it completely different?
Can you add a lot of digital gain without adding a lot of noise if you record in 32 bit resolution?
    Thanks!

@Redpill Progressive sure there is on the M4, the M2 has no line ins, thus no meter

    • @Thomas_Lo
      @Thomas_Lo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Redpill Progressive I was not aware there is a difference between input 1/2 with gain at 0 and 3/4 line in. It's not audible I would say, but couldn't really measure. So if that is the only reason for you to consider the m4, the m2 might do for you.

The problem due to the phantom power while recording with condenser microphones can be solved with an external unit power supply I believe .I’m divided between the Motu M4 and the Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 3rd Gen. because of the two headphones outputs, two pair of monitors outputs, external power supply, etc.Thank you for your important work and help!
