Tip: DOn't use a song with multiple people singing it confuses the casting director and they're trying to figure out why you're having a conversation with yourself
So some examples I can think of off the top of my head is Candy Store, Beautiful, Big Fun, Sincerely me, Schuyler sisters, and the climax of Defying Gravity.
Jayce Todd, I totally agree. Some girl sang “My New Philosophy” for auditions. It was a good performance, but it didn’t work because she went to the left when she was singing for one character, and went to the right for the other.

OMG SHE LIKED IT! Kat you’ve inspired me so much. I had no theatre for a little bit because my theatre company got shut down. Last fall I did my first production in 2 years and killed it by watching all your theatre videos. You’re a true inspiration.
We are doing 2 plays for the start of the year; we've got back the casting list and I'm one of the main roles! I didn't really want a big character since I was waiting for my shot in Matilda the musical. I really want to be Matilda, I think I have the potential since I've had been in various solos that my drama teacher has assigned. I really hope these tips work! Thank you in advance. :) Edit: I GOT MATILDA! It’s been a while since I’ve made this but I actually got the role of MATILDA!
The be prepared one is super important. At my audition I was the only one who had memorized my monologue and got all of the feelings behind it (they had ones you could use there). And when they asked me to repeat different parts in different voices I knew which parts suited the princess voice, the war general voice, and the valley girl voice. And you know what happened? I got a callback, and got casted as one of the main characters. Prepare kids!
I auditioned for my school musical but didnt get in, not even in the chorus 😪 What frustrates me is that a girl who never went to audition got a lead role
B. .-. LITERALLY THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!!!! THE GIRL THAT GOT THE LEAD COULD NOT SING AT ALL!!!! Even my mom said so too and she is a voice coach!!!!
My school did school of rock and the ensemble went from around 20 people to 7 people in a week. Another fun story relating to that practice ran afoul ten minutes into lunch so a few people were practising choreography on the stage, this girl ran onto the stage and started shouting at everyone for being “ theatre kids” ( wow really ) a small fight broke out and teachers had to intervene. Anyway turns out that girl had auditioned for summer but got ensemble and quite in anger
Lmao same thing happened to me but my friend refused the role because she knew I was the most deserving of it but I still didn’t get it but that’s fine it got cancelled anyways LMAO Edit: this sounds narcissistic. What I meant was that everybody just auditioned so they could skip class. Everybody knew I was the only theatre kid in my school.
First we take over Broadway, then the world, then the UNIVERSE?! (Also Kat, did you hear about the Prom turning into a Netflix movie coming next year and the cast list came out today!)
Hello Sunshyne They never said if it would available in the UK. They only announced the cast, that it will be on Netflix, and the release year which is 2020
This theatre Thursday it’ll be opening night for Legally Blonde, where I’m playing Elle!!! I’ve never been so nervous & excited at once. Thank you so much for this video, super helpful :)
I'm not auditioning currently, because I'm part of the chorus in a production of Beauty and the Beast. It's not main cast, but I'm happy I'm in the show and it bulks up my resume for future shows. 😊
Remember the ensemble is just important as the cast. Everyone makes it come to life whether you speak or not you are very important you might not know it but the audience is watching you.
I've made a number of short films. I've sat through alot of castings for them. I loved your advice. One thing I would add (why would you not have a resume???) Is to include unique traits and abilities on the resume. I know that everyone doesn't read the resume, but why take the chance? Sometimes the casting process is just so fast and robotic - but I have gotten into conversations with people about the resume. If they can... wiggle ears, speak Klingon, moonwalk, etc... It will show more of their personalities, makes people memorable, may give you something to bond over.. When you're trying to decide and you think a couple of people are roughly equal to the role, something that makes you stand out can make all the difference. Could be your bold choice in clothes, could be that you had skills that made people laugh. Just a thought. 🤔
Katherine: It drives me crazy when people don't do the homework Me: *haves flashbacks to when I seemed like the only one who practiced the required audition song*
Actually got a part in a ballet based on these tips because when you walk into the room the casting panel is looking for someone who is a team player, is polite, is on time and you all have to wear the same uniform essentially, but that big smile makes such a huge difference. If you're auditioning to be a snowflake, be a snowflake! Be gentle on the breeze, float through the air - people weren't really getting that aspect of auditioning. The casting panel actually laughed when I messed up but ended with a flourish!
Krista Tyre omg! I have nothing to do with this comment but I was Fastrada in pippin two years ago and it was THE BEST. The whole cast was great, even if the show is messed up ahah
I auditioned for Amelie the Musical 4 months ago, and I didn't get the part I was hoping for. I went up on stage, was in the middle of singing, and I froze. Mind you, I have spend months, preparing this. Therefore, I didn't get the part. But what I learned from that is, even if you, never stop trying. And don't fail to try. Like, if I didn't get the part, then there is another audition around the corner.

Hi so i am auditioning for SHARPAYYYY and im really scared. Sharpay is super out there and confident and thats something that i need to add in my audition, i will updateee!!!
At my audition in high school, for the dance audition I had holographic filas and dance clothes. When it was time to sing, I put on a dress and gorgeous sparkly heels and when I walked in they were going insane. Like I was known as the shoe girl the entire production. Every audition I do something spontaneous with my wardrobe
I wore a black leotard and like a pink little dress cardigan and jeans and heels for the lines/song, and then the same leotard with shorts and sneakers for the dance auditon
The Addams family. I’m trying to go for Lucas (I’m a trans male that hasn’t fully transitioned in highschool) so I’m hoping I’ll stand out in a good way.

Hi Katherine! I love your videos! I do theatre all the time and I have some requests for videos. 1. What are some techniques that casting directors use? 2. Why do I always get sick during shows? 3. Why do the best actors or actresses sometimes get ensemble? 4. What do you think about the Tony Awards? 5. What is the worst thing that ever happened to you during a show? 6. How do you get yourself to feel better after a show ends? 7. How do survive being sick during rehearsals/ tech week/ THE SHOW? 8. Jr. Shows 9. Getting Over Not Being Cast as The Part You Wanted 10. Waiting To Hear If You Got The Part These are just requests but it would be cool if you made videos about them or responded to me. Your so amazing Katherine! Thanks for making such a great theatre channel for all us thespians! OTHER PEOPLE: Like this if you want her to do any of these things or reply with your own ideas
This comment is rlly old but one reason why you might get sick during shows is because you get less sleep and then your immune system is compromised, which paired with being in close proximity to other ppl makes you get sick
I've been bingeing all of your audtion videos because I have auditions for Legally Blonde next week and I really want Elle! All of your advice has been wonderful!!! Thank you!!!
My next audition is going to be for Addams Family the musical, but I’m be try nervous for it bc I’m a freshman and know that I stand very little chance at getting cast let alone an actual speaking role
Ohh my gosh i need this!! Im having an audition to the beauty and the beast musical in under a month and was wondering how i could stand out! Thank you so much Kat ❤️
I personally did a derp during the Auditions for Spamalot (to be performing this summer) and I remember feeling like I wasn't going to get anything and then somehow I got Patsy. I recently found out that the cast is going to comprise of some of my best friends from that company. So I am thrilled to be chasing one of my best theatre friends around the stage with coconuts.
Hey Kat! Saw Light in the Piazza on West End the other day and it was amazing! The story and music are beautiful, and they are outside of my usual taste. I went because I heard about it from you, so thank you for helping me step outside of my comfort zone! I loved it!
Bestie when you do cold reads for an audition…. READ THE MATERIAL IN ADVANCE. The amount of people who don’t do this is insane, it makes making choices when your doing the scene so much easier because you already have an idea of how to present the scene way in advance. You can experiment with making unique choices. You aren’t just reading words on paper.
Hey there!! Here’s a whole playlist on advice- pretty much every topic is covered in here (including how to find the perfect audition song!). Break a leg ☺️ th-cam.com/play/PLQT9aHBtN_y8GZBgldiqRMFM6tjrCL9XQ.html
I’m auditioning for a production of Peter Pan (the full stage musical from 1954) in a week! I’m auditioning for Peter!! So excited!! Watching all of Kat’s videos for audition prep!
Just saw this video, so I am Super late to this comment but I do have an Audition and Callback coming up. The latter is for a Shakespeare company and the former is an Equity Chorus Call for Hamilton. I’ve known is coming up and, because it’s my favorite musical of all time, I’ve had some trouble letting go of the “importance” of it and not making it a thing. Some things that have helped included; working on material during classes, pretending it’s the audition itself. Going down to a studio and working the material out super slow and deliberately. And I’m also taking private lessons and dances classes to just bounce my ideas off another human being in preparation. One thing that has always helped is getting just one person’s name in the room and repeating it out loud. It makes them, and hopefully myself, a person person and always brings a bit of myself into the room. Thank you for making these videos! Break a leg out there!
My school is doing Heathers the musical (High school edition) I’m auditioning for Veronica Sawyer tomorrow! I’ll get the call back on Friday. We’ll see how it goes! 💞 UPDATE: ackk, sorry for never updating. i completely forgot that i commented this,, it went well and i got the role as veronica :)
I have my high school's vocal auditions tomorrow for the musical grease. I know I will do well. I'm preforming some of the song "Look At ME, I'm Sandra Dee"!
Going for callbacks in 5 days. It’s my senior year of high school, and we’ll be doing Little Shop of Horrors. I have callbacks for Mushnik, Orin, and Audrey2. I’m very much looking forward to this! (Hoping for A2, but really it’s whatever is best for the show:)
I’m 13, and I’m just getting into musical theater. I get so nervous during auditioning and this is definitely something I want to with my life but, I feel like my voice isn’t good enough for it. But, I REALLY want to do this for a living and my dream is to get a Tony Award one day🥺 . Thank you so much ! This video helped me out a lot .! Ohh nd I’m auditioning for Frozen Jr.. please wish me luck .!🌚🌟

8. Jr. Shows
9. Getting Over Not Being Cast as The Part You Wanted
10. Waiting To Hear If You Got The Part
These are just requests but it would be cool if you made videos about them or responded to me.
Did you get Elle?
@@keiko9968 Nope! I got Margot! But it was still a fun show!!

I loved it!
YAY!! I’m so glad you enjoyed ♥️♥️
12 dancing princesses!!
I'm auditioning for The Little Mermaid tomorrow, and these videos have been helping me get through my nerves 😭
