    Took a Humer H1 to Frazer Island a few years ago. Pulled stuck vehicles out of soft sand everyday from the number 1 mistake all novice Island trippers make like our M8 in his 8x8 TOO HIGH TYRE PRESSURE I’m sure he has gotten the message by now. Would be good to see him have another crack at the Island again.

      I know this is an old video, the whole point of letting the air out of the tires is he made an awesome piece of equipment that our soldiers use that can't make it across a beach let alone the desert when lives depend on it. He could have been driving through there like the big dog , but he made a 400,000.00 plus truck look terrible.

    • @Kalumbatsch
      @Kalumbatsch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tires don't even reach solid ground, they are just floating in sand. I'm pretty sure it would have made jack shit of a difference.

    • @leopic501
      @leopic501 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dario you should get track over tires on rear only , it will be like night and day over that soft sand there about 4000 dollars more or less then you will only let the air out the front only maybe not even that but I am telling you big difference on the heavier trucks.

      @@Kalumbatsch Airing down helps spread the weight and gives more surface area. It still would have helped.

    • @patty4730
      @patty4730 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Kalumbatsch you have obviously never driven on a beach. No one is looking for solid anything. The purpose of letting tyres down is to increase the surface area of the tyre and bag out. It makes a massive difference in any vehicle. I have been stuck upto my axles in my 4x4 many times and simply letting the air out from 35psi i run on the road out to 18 psi drives me out of the bog without doing much else. Fraser island can be alot of fun.

      @Robert Scott Godwin I drove the M977 A2 and M1120 A4 for a decade. Also rode in M978 A2, M984 A2/A4, and M1158 A4. None of these variants featured CTIS. Any tire deflation would need to occur outside the cab. It's worth noting that the M977 A2 featured in this video is a 21-ton vehicle (dry, no cargo). This chassis is capable of hauling an additional 15 tons. By design, it could haul any of the other trucks in this video.
      A few notes about the tires: They are decent warm weather hardball tires. They are terrible in the cold, terrible in the mud, terrible on sand, decent rock crawlers, decent for fording. Speaking of fording, the M1120 A4 can ford up to 2 feet of water with zero mechanical implications, and up to 4 feet of water for up to 15 minutes, but the TM states you must pull the hub covers and open the transfer cases and check for water.
      Anyway, it's a mean machine, but it does not provide all the creature comforts of the FMTV cargo trucks (which are absolute off-roading monsters).

    Amazing machine. One of those would be my ultimate overland vehicle.
    It must be worrying to be "almost" stuck in one of those - it's not as if there's anything bigger that could come and pull you out. Fabulous to see it just keep on going until it was free again. I guess from the other comments that that section is famously difficult to traverse in anything. I wonder how something like a Hagglund would manage there.
    Out of interest, would wetting the sand have made a positive or negative difference?
    Lastly, why were the wheels jerking when it was pulling through the powder-sand? The engine was constantly roaring so must have been consistently turning.

    • @philbox4566
      @philbox4566  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That jerking is as a result of torque build up through all the transmission components. Driving on the sand is always far far easier after rain. Ngkarla Rocks is notorious for having light fluffy sand. People always get bogged there. This truck got very bogged over the calm side of the Island on his next trip up there. Tide came about half way up the diffs. Took a 4wd large tow truck and a Unimog as well as near on a days work to get him unbogged. He sold it soon after.

      @@NigelMarston No one in their right mind should ever drive a vehicle in some of that bottomless gumbo mud over on the Hervey Bay side of Fraser Island. Thin smear of sand over the top of the slick jelly. Anything including a 4 wheeler would get stuck there. Oh yes, down in Brisbane the airport which is close to Moreton Bay undertook a study on how they could get to a downed aircraft on the mud flats. Turns out short of a hovercraft everyone was gunna die. Sometimes the terrain dictates that you just don't go there. Offroad vehicles can get you into more trouble than they get you out of. :)
