Yeah if only that was Chinas intent but it’s not China doesn’t help without taking over sovereignty and control just Ask Fiji how that is going. Chinas belt and road initiative is nothing more then trying to spread its roots into everywhere that accepts it and inevitably trying to take over sovereignty.

The Laos government sold its own people and country to the Chinese. Already the Chinese have brought environmental damage to its land and people via pesticides and chemicals. The Lao people are not seeing any benefit as the Chinese hire and use their own people for obvious reasons: Laotians are not as hard working or industrious as the Chinese and yet they complain about lack of work opportunity. A friend's father who worked for rfa Asia (20 years) and is now retired stated that based on his year over year observations, the CCP will rape the two countries of natural resources and toss them aside when done. Laos and Vietnam are forever indebted to China and will remain in poverty.

thank you, CNA and host. As a Chinese lived in Shanghai I don't really know the details about the BRI, and my ignorance even make me feared that we might carelessly disturbing our neighbours. And after watching this documentary, I have learned a lot about the BRI and it's influence from north to south. Most importantly, the narrative angle is focusing on the peoples, their lives and culture. That I think is the same purpose of BRI which is to inspire people and encourage them to improve their lives constantly.

Everybody talks about the Debt Trap, but nobody ever speaks of its flip side, the Poverty Trap.
China is offering other countries as way to escape poverty through soft loans. China is doing its part to help, but it is up to the local people to meet China half way by working hard to improve themselves and work hard to take advantage of the new opportunities given to them. It only becomes a debt trap if they do nothing and expect miracles to happen just because the new infrastructure is there. Therefore if it ever becomes a debt trap, the country can only blame themselves for their cultural bias of being lazy and indolent.

What this channel failed to mention is that most of the animosity between China and Vietnam are being manipulated by the US! The US has many fake non-governmental organizations, such as the National Endowment for Democracy, that operate in China and Vietnam to stir up troubles for both China and Vietnam by trying to get the people in Vietnam to hate China so that Vietnam would be an enemy for China instead of a friend! The US has these fake non-governmental organizations all over the world trying to hurt both China and Russia by pulling these types of schemes against these two powerful countries that the US sees as a threat to its hegemony!

It's very wise if the Vietnamese to be cautious in signing massive trade and economic deals with ANY foreign investors, not just China. When another nation has too much financial influence on a nation; the integrity of their political and judicial systems become compromised and can easily result in a foreign government influencing laws, policies and even constitutions. This takes generations to reverse and potentially the affected country may never fully recover.

The host said "As the land locked largely mountainous country with many in population living in poverty, Laos has for years been put high on the United Nation list of least developed countries."
So where are western countries, Korea, and Japan to help Laos to develop? They totally ignored Laos and let Laos die on its own. Now as China comes in to help Laos develop, and Laos is developing fast with many Laos people's getting richer, the West are getting jealous and starts to smear and demonize China. While the western countries constantly smear China about debt-trap, smart Laotians believe in long-term like the Chinese.
Laos people remember to take this helps from China's goodwill to grow better.

H.P. Nguyen - what's my government? I am not Chinese citizen.
What 1000 year colonization? Your Vietnamese culture is from Chinese culture, Confucius teaching, from food, family values, clothing, pottery, weaving, to language, holidays, etc. Vietnamese culture is 90% or more from Chinese culture.
If you blame China for colonization, then are you ashamed of your culture which is 90% from Chinese? If you blame Chinese for 1000 years colonization, then drop all your Chinese culture and adopt the French which changed your language from Nom words to Latin words.
See I hate to see Vietnamese are such a traitor and ungrateful people. Without Chinese influence, you Vietnamese are still backward and barbarians. Although many Vietnamese hate China, China still comes to help your country develop. The cultural building in Hanoi is a gift from China to Vietnam. Instead of saying "thank you, China, very much for you great help", you Vietnamese blame China for helping like "take your money away we don't need your money" blah blah.
Remember that your Vietnamese government is asking China for help. China doesn't volunteer to come and help VN because China already learns its lesson from ungrateful neighbor, Vietnam. Helping Vietnam, China doesn't get much benefit.
Where is American's helps when VN needs roads and bridges the most, not weapons?
When VN needs roads and bridges to develop the country to make Vietnamese lives better, the US creates fears for your country and sells weapons to make money off Vietnam, and your ungrateful Vietnamese still worship the American like god.
I wonder if Vietnamese are lack of intelligence or something. I don't know.

China pumped billions of dollars to help build up Laos' economy and infrastructures while the US has dumped billions of tons of bombs and land mines into Laos! So much bombs and land mines are still in Laos that even today those bombs and land mines are still killing the people of Laos, but the only country that is helping Laos to get rid of those bombs and land mines is China! The US is nowhere to be found despite the pleas from the government of Laos and the UN to help Laos get rid of the bombs and land mines that the US has placed in Laos!
Before China helps Laos' to build its economy, Laos owed the US billions of dollars in debts thanks to the US's debt trap schemes! Now that Laos is able to pay off most of the debts it owes to the US, thanks to China's investments with the country, the US makes up stories about China's "debt traps in Laos! The jealous USA is in desperation mode since it is losing its hegemony over Laos and other countries so it accuses China of doing the very thing that it is guilty of doing in order to smear China's reputation and convince Laos to not do business with China! But the government and people of Laos are not stupid, they could see what China has done for their countries versus the lies, thefts, and debt traps that the US has put them into! While the US keeps spreading its anti-China propaganda, China keeps building up the world to withstand the US's intrusion, thefts, and bullying!

The Cat Linh- Ha Đong railroad is 13Km long and contracted to Chinese company at 553 million US in 2011, supposed to start operating in 2015. As of today, 3 years later, they raised the cost to ́̉́868 millions US and still in test mode. This is just an example of how good Chinese contractors are! Go to Viet Nam and take a look at all the Thermal Electric Coal plants build by China and see for yourself how they smoke! America made the mistake also of forgetting about the economic well being of its own people while spending trillions of dollars abroad to rebuild other nations. Right now China has better infrastructure than America in many ways. More roads, bridges, highways, rail, airports and subways. Asia has all the top airports in the world and is still growing.

Vietnam is just very tenacious about being independent. It declared independence from a colonial power and built a constitution that takes a large part from the American constitution and Les droits de l'homme. The Soviet Union was the only one who could back the Ho-Chi-Mihn's government and there was no other capable non-communist leader.
Now in 2019, in retrospective, for the average Vietnamese person will view Americas actions as more noble than those of China that would just wants to control them. The devastation that Stalinist policies brought to Vietnam was in many ways worse than the war. China is developing its own version of colonialism and maybe its best system for the world - I don't know - but it is perfectly reasonable for nations to not want to be involved at this early stage.
Everyone knows that with these belt and road projects, there will be politicians making a lot of money on the side. It happened in Malaysia. When there isn't a lot of transparency in these projects, people will safely assume that there is corruption going on. I don't know how this documentary could present ordinary people protesting against corruption and taking an interest in Vietnam's future as a nationalist sentiment. There are no elections and more control over the media in Vietnam, so people protest as a way of expressing political discontent. Its better that some protest is expressed rather than follow China's attitude towards protest.
Saying that Vietnam should accept debts from China and its politicians are smart enough to realise this but the average person is stupid and nationalist is intellectually dishonest. This is why people end up watching fake news, the main-stream news is biased and doesn't dig deep enough.

At the same time the infrastructures are badly needed in some neighboring countries while they have no money to do it, I think in that regards it could be a win win situation.

The pliant media helps the paymaster in feeding us the diet which shall keep our mouth shut and bank accounts exhausted.

What an amazing vision and forward thinking creating this New Silk Road. I can't think of any country bold enough to try and pull this off with enough resource and capital like China. I have to commend them for that. China's goal is to facilitate trade with the world and in the process elevate the poor countries along this belt and road initiatives. It's a win win for the countries involved. The debt trap is real and a concern but I don't think China's goal is to create a debt trap for the countries but to connect the world to trade. I expect a few countries may fail to pay back. We shall see how that unfolds but I do really like the grand view with the side effect of modernizing many of the countries that will be touched by this forward vision and improving their standard of living. I truly also want to believe this will help the world as we are all one race Human race.

China declared war on us in 1979, backstabbing us after helping us. They've also recently took Vietnamese legal territory (200 Nautical Miles from Coast - UNCLOS Treaty - China has signed this) and asked for American assistance to deter the Chinese, and they came. Korea and Japan, allies with America, have been investing heavily into our economy and created many infrastructure deals to soon be built or finished such as the HCM Metro with Japan. We already know what China is trying to accomplish with this Silk Road, it's an obvious give away that they're trying to return back to their Imperial past of the Qing Dynasty. It's obvious they're setting up tributary states again, look at Cambodia. We'd rather be in America's sphere rather than having to be a Chinese Tributary State, even worse, Chinese land.

Can't say the same with vietnam though. For the one thousand year they were ruled by china, for another thousand year they defended against chinese invasion, or so they like to say. Your neighbour would never forget they too had a thousand year of constant vietamese invasion and take over. I dont understand why you guys need to hate china so much, and you probably think khmers are stupidly friendly to china. Whos brainwashed? Did you not learn the total bombs dropped vietnam was more than what allies dropped on both germany and japan combined? Did you not for a second think about why carpet bombing worked on germany and japan but not vietnam? My opinion: I think we need not forget history because we could learn a lot by studying history, but the world is not static but dynamic, and the way people think is also changed, so people don’t want to think in the same way every day, and the attitudes, thoughts, opinions, standpoints etc. could be changed in more balanced way without focusing on extreme turnings. So, countries in Asia have reached to a significant juncture in history to work together for the benefit of ALL instead of a single party. So, all countries in Asia should think of new approaches in order to work together as a single Asian partnership, a common platform, because every single country should be benefited whatever is initiated in the region at mega level. So, need to think of “win-win situations” at all times. When Asia is flourished, the whole world is flourished too, and no doubt about it.
Good Luck, Asia! Good Luck, World!

You have fail to mention that the unconditioned support from China to the Vietnamese during the struggle against the French colonial and the American wars.
The 80% of the people in favorite of American over the Chinese are due to the fact that these people thinks that they need more "Agent Orange" intake, they did not quite have enough of the stuff during the war yet! They also think that they needs more red light district to welcome American sailor in their cities. I am sure that they have a vast young population to support this industry. The hell to the Chinese Belt and Road initiative, it sounds too much like hard work.
