A salt lick is a place where animals come to lick salt to give them necessary minerals. They can occur naturally but many ranchers provide them for their cattle. The restaurant named Salt Lick is a marvelous bar-b-que place out in the country outside of Austin. Bar-b-que sauce is not used as a dipping sauce! Brush it on meat before you cook it and reapply as often as you'd like while cooking. The sugar in the sauce helps create a lovely carmalization on the meat. The hill country is what this middle part of Texas is called (where Austin is and many smaller towns) because the land has many small rolling hills covered with trees.

I love H‑E‑B, it’s one of the best parts of moving to Texas for me. They have amazing produce and fresh food. They have also done an amazing job at making things as safe as possible to go grocery shopping during the pandemic. And when we have a hurricane or other weather event, the H‑E‑B company has an emergency response team that brings food and water. They are amazing members of our community, and when we lost our house in a Hurricane I can’t tell you how much they helped. 💕

As a Texan we have a lot of pride in our state. We are the most easily recognized state. H.E.B. is not in every city or town but it is the best grocery store. Bunuelos are traditionally a tortilla fried then coated in sugar and cinnamon and a new years eve good luck tradition to eat. Its an everyman type grocery store. HEB plus has more to offer in the style of Wal-Mart. It has clothes food and other goods. Dr. Pepper is Texas made

I’m a born & raised Texan and Texans are definitely proud! Texas has its own unique culture because of it’s shared border with Mexico and our history as a Republic :)
Also, HEB has very low prices on most things. They have a more “specialty” store called Central Market that is similar to Whole Foods. Both stores also have large bulk sections.

The reason some Americans have square boxes under our trees is we like to wrap a present, inside a present, inside a present, etc. My mom will put the smallest gift in the biggest box and make the gift look very deceiving. Also Kate is right it's very hard to wrap a t-shirt. Besides the box helps hide what gift is inside and makes it more fun to watch the person open it.

H-E-B has great products, workers are treated well, they have a nonprofit foundation that helps in the community, are a super competent company with top-notch emergency response plans, and they are known for using products from local farmers, ranchers, fisheries, etc. Each HEB is different, because it's tailored to the local community. It's a delight to shop at HEB for our groceries, essentials, and treats as well.

My mom does 3 trees each year, the large one for the gifts, medium for the dining room, and a small in the kitchen. She uses the one in the dining room as a "for you" tree. So when guests come in and make the corny joke of "where's my gift" she says "under the for you tree" all those wrapped gifts are the empty boxes from the gifts under the family tree. We get a good laugh when someone takes one and finds it empty or filled with pinecones😁

Alex, a salt lick is a block of salt placed in with cows/horses for them to lick as part of a necessary mineral to their diet. Hunters will also create salt licks by pouring salt in a spot on the ground to attract deer and elk.

H‑E‑B brand all the way! They’re cheaper than the name brand in product comparison, but they’re very passionate about making the same or better quality and taste.
They get their produce from local farmers and they’re known for their hospitality. During the winter storm an Austin store lost power with a store full of people and let them continue to shop and get what they needed then let everyone leave no charge. H‑E‑B is the best ❤️

🐶 That was an amazing box !When Kate asked about gift boxes in the USA, along time ago the department stores had beautiful boxes and they would wrap up the gifts. For extra money you could get fancy paper. They boxes were not collapsible. They would store them from small to large inside each other. Now they are collapsible. They just hand you a pile of them with some tissue paper. Thank you Alexis and James for keeping Kate and Alex so happy till we meet again. You are adorable, like they said. H-E-B is our neighborhood grocery store. A lot of towns only have H-E-B as a grocery store. They have great prices, better than Wal-Mart on grocery prices and they always offer to help you out to your car. When my oldest was a baby they had no problem getting a second cart to load my bagged groceries into and then automatically helped me to my car (baby car seat in the cart does not leave enough room for bagged groceries). We buy the Oreo brand cookies because my husband prefers double stuff.

HEB is the best grocery store! Nothing like Trader Joe’s though

  • @ImSoMonster

I was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas for 24 years (less than a 3 HR drive from the Mexican border). I moved to California about 2 years ago and absolutely miss HEB as well as Whataburger (our Texas-Local burger joint that we all have a love for as well).
HEB is definitely the preferred grocery store to any Texan. Most of the HEBs are in and South of Austin. I believe the Dallas Area had a few but not many. HEB is your typical grocery store that everyone goes to but MUCH better. Their prices are always competitive with other grocery stores around and their house brands (HEB, Central Market, Hill Country Fare) are the less expensive alternative to the name brands. So it looks lux but is definitely inexpensive! Also HEB isn't much like Trader Joe's at all. Trader Joe's is a fairly small store that sells almost exclusively their own In-House brand which keeps the food good quality and prices low. HEBs are large grocery stores. There are also HEB Plus' which are giant stores. Loved watching this video of you guys trying food from a place so close to my heart! It's also giving me ideas of things I need my mom to send me from Texas as well! Awesome video as always! ❤️😊

From Austin TX too, hello fellow Texans! I just bought a bag of Siete Buñuelos so I got to try them at the same time and can't stop eating them. Right after my lunch with Siete crispy tacos! 😄 Siete is such a great Austin, TX brand that helps those of us with limited diets enjoy great food (and not just from HEB!). How fun to watch an HEB box! What I love about HEB is how each store is different and reflective of the area it's in. Although if you move across town you miss out on some favorite things but quickly find new ones. It's the affordable grocery in town but feels customized instead of a generic big box store. Thanks Alexia and James for sending this box and for Kate, Alex and Matt sharing it with all of us!

Love HEB! Although HEB is local to Texas, I was always amazed at how sophisticated and international their selections were; I found cake mix from France! And they do showcaseTexas-made products (Poteet strawberry ice cream). But special in my heart is Central Market (part of HEB). Though this place apoears to be for the upper crust, everyone should check it out ..produce dept is amazing, and specialty sections for meats, cheeses, bakery (you had me at strawberry and goat cheese muffins). HEB is one of the things (besides my family) I missed when I moved back to Las Vegas. But I still have some of my re-usable HEB grocery bags...☺

Hi! Just wanted to note that salt lick refers to a salt block usually put out for cows to lick as a source of nutrients and a treat. Salt Lick the restaurant is popular but there are SOOO many other places as well.
Also just a note on preparing the abuelitas hot chocolate: take plenty of time to simmer it and constantly wisk it to break up the grains of chocolate. Near the end bring it to a solid boil, careful to keep stirring and keeping it stable, then a step further to a rolling boil for just a short time maybe a minute. Keep stirring and bring the temp back down. This step is essential in my family who are very picky about the small granules of sugar left if not heated high enough. Careful it can bubble over quickly tho!
And to better give it context in comparison to trader Joe's, they sell name brand products and over the years have continually added their own lines of products to compete. Trader Joe's is cool because there are plenty of affordable options for those with less money and then of course they have their expensive stuff, there is very limited selection for each product. HEB is very much affordable and has several selections per product depending on how much you want to spend. I loved hearing you say the quality seems high because sometimes I worry my bias is too strong lol
The best thing about HEB is how they specifically cater to the neighborhood and/or community they are in! The one I shop at has a Kosher Deli to serve the Jewish population in the area, it's delightful!

I love butter cookies from the tins! My Mimi used to save them and use to deliver her homemade Christmas cookies and fudge to neighbors and friends. I remember my cousin and I would spend our Christmas vacation with her helping to make days worth of Xmas treats and delivering in our cute holiday dresses.
I've been to Texas once and Salt Lick was the bbq I went to! I thought it was awesome that they had a big open pit in the restaurant cooking the meat.

  • @hu2268

So happy to see this! This is our main grocer here in San Antonio tx.
Heb is actually the “generic” brand, believe it or not. It’s cheaper than brand name! There are tiers to HEB’s brands though. You have H‑E‑B, hill country, mi tienda (certain Mexican items they specialize in) & central market which is meaning to be more like “whole foods” kinds of items. Some hebs are H‑E‑B plus, (think target vs super target) which have a full electronics section, jewelry boutiques, clothing, home & garden centers. Some even have bbq places or pizza places (Heb owned and brands)
Some things H‑E‑B does are hit or miss, but believe that there is an Heb equivalent to EVERYTHING in the store.

    • @hu2268
      @hu2268 3 ปีที่แล้ว

And just to clarify I would choose Oreos over Heb brands 🤣 even if H‑E‑B is cheaper. Everything Heb branded is cheaper. Hill country is its lowest tier in terms of price.

I think the reason why Americans have so much state pride is because America is so large and has such different cultures and landscapes in every state you go to. So you can really relate to the people in your state and the things you go through and it kind of makes you band together. Like I’m from Alabama and it’s super humid and hot here and so we might complain about different things than someone from Arizona where they have really dry heat. And I think it creates a sort of pride for your state and where you live and why it’s so much better than other places. Like I might say because I’m from the Gulf Coast I think our beaches are prettier because of the white sand, where someone in Maine might argue that the rocky beaches are prettier. But I will say Texans are known for their state pride and really think it’s the greatest state.

Yes, we use a machine for our coffee. For that particular kind (grounds) we use a "coffee maker". You place a filter in the maker, then scoop the grounds into the filter. The machine heats the water and drops it onto the coffee. It drops down through the filter and into the coffee "pot", which resembles a kettle just a bit. Most people have some form of coffee maker here, just like most households over there have kettles. BTW trying to find an electric kettle here in Texas is very difficult.

A lot of HEB fresh food is locally sourced or from our next door neighbor Louisiana. Especially, fish, shrimp and crawfish. That also helps keep prices down.

Texan here, to tell you that I am an HEB loyalist. NOt only the groceries value and quality but also their commitment to service (in store and out into the community--check it out: they even are known to provide immediate emergency services in time of natural disasters in our state!! and Holiday meals to those in need in each community they are in). They run the gamut of prices but are mostly inexpensive to affordable. They beat out Wal-Mart as everyone's favorite, hands down. PLus our Waco stores have a British Foods section (where i get my PG Tips and digestives) and an Asian foods, German Foods and of course Mexican foods section. Hope you can visit a few in person one day!

Alexia and James did a wonderful job representing awesome HEB items. HEB is your every day/reasonably priced grocery store. The employees always have a smile on their face and are always helpful. Everybody has "my HEB" that they go to all the time. Their name brand products are wonderful, sometimes better than the name brand. I love Trader Joe's, but I think it's a higher priced store than HEB.

Hi from Texas!! H‑E‑B is amazing they are normal ranged prices sometimes even lower priced than other places. They have a counter part called central market that is like Whole Foods though. I choose the twisters as the are cheaper as in like half the price and tend to have more flavor and not as fake tasting as Oreos do sometimes.

I think there are a few reasons Texans love their state so much; it was actually a republic which fought for independence from Mexico in 1835 (I believe) before it became a state, so they feel a “national” pride. Plus, until Alaska became a state, they were the largest state in America.

@@ThisWithThem I lived there beginning in 1985 in the midst of their Sesquecentennial (150th anniversary) and I found their huge pride in their state a little odd. I’m from Oregon so I found the state hot, humid, buggy and flat. Very nice people (Houston), people from everywhere. Moved back to Oregon in 1992, and I don’t miss the hot weather.

HEB is an average grocery store for the average person. They offer brand named products at average price. Then they also offer their brand of products and most of the time the H-E-B brand is cheaper price wise. Then they also offer a Select or premium line of products. Those are priced a little higher. Even so everything is affordable. Then here in Pearland(suburb of Houston) we have regular H-E-B stores and we also have an H-E-B Plus store that not only carries regular groceries but also has a toy department, clothing, department, electronics and more!!
