Lewis Black | The Rant Is Due best of Voting

  • As one election cycle passes and another is right around the corner, it's time to get out and vote. From sea to shining sea, who gets to vote, when they get to vote, and how they vote has become an increasingly contentious issue, which is odd in a democracy. In this voting rights-themed collection, Lewis hears from every perspective on the issue, including some helpful feedback from our Australian allies. And stick around for the civics lesson on Gerrymandering.

I had moved back home on terminal leave prior to my retirement after three long decades. Anyway, it was the 2020 election. I had registered as a democrat in a 99.9% red county. Moving along, when it was finally my turn, they asked for ID. Sure. No problem. Handed over my drivers license. She checked her list, then looked at me and wanted proof of residency. Sure. No problem. Handed over my electric bill, property tax receipt, and a couple of pieces of mail where the address matched my license (I'm used to doing this anyway). She then asked me if I had any other form of official photo ID. Sure. No problem. I handed her my ID case with my USAF ID card and a couple of other agency ID's. Well, she looked at these and asked me, "Sir, how do I know this ID is actually real?" I was standing in front of her in my Class A uniform with the three stars of a Lieutenant General on my shoulders the entire time. I asked her if she would like for me to get the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs or perhaps the Secretary of Defense on the phone to vouch for me? She actually huffed at me, called her boss over to her line, explained what was going on, and would you believe that the 'boss' repeated the exact same dialog? It was like they were reading from a script with the heading 'Say This If A Democrat Tries to Vote'. The second harpy actually tried to get me to stand aside and wait "Until we can clear this up." Yes, they were going above and beyond the call to keep the thousand or so democrats in this county from voting. Now I often think that I spent a decade of my service dropping bombs on the wrong people! /smh

    • @Raz.C
      @Raz.C 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah, international opinion about america (in specific regards to democracy) is VERY unflattering. Especially the way you process democracy through mashers and grinders, and use the resulting paste to build what you call the Electoral College, so that it's possible for someone who gets less votes to nevertheless win an election. Then you have the fun-to-spell 'gerrymandering,' which allows politicians to choose their voters, which seems to be some kind of reverse-democracy or backwards-democracy.
All of that is 'your' business (your = you americans, not 'you' specifically) really, and 'we' don't care (we = the rest of the world) what you do in your corner. But when you start invading various undeveloped/ developing nations, with the ostensible casus belli that you're "Bringing democracy to the -brown- people of [insert 3rd world nation here]" It just seems like a hideously bad joke. You guys can't get democracy right in your own country, yet you think it's ok to invade some other country and force them to implement democratic reforms, at gunpoint. It's the kind of nonsense you might expect to read about in a cheap novel by a bad author. The fact that it's actually happening (multiple time, even) in real life only serves to underscore how tragic our modern world has become and I, for one, look forward to the day our Chinese overlords are able to stand up to the playground bully (in this analogy, the world is the playground and the USA is the playground bully) and to prevent him from shaking down the smaller kids and beating up anyone he doesn't like. Don't get me wrong; I'm not pretending that the Chinese are 'the good guys' in this future-narrative. Not at all. It's just so heart-breaking and depressing to see america claim to be 'the good guys,' yet they do all the things that 'the bad guys' do and are never held accountable for it (even though George Bush Jr., Dick Cheney, Tony Blair and many of their staff were FINALLY charged and convicted as war criminals in an international criminal court [albeit in absentia], not one of them suffered any form of punishment, or had to provide any kind of restitution to their victims or their families)...Sorry, this seems to have shifted focus. That probably means it's nap time...

In my area, the election commission changed the polling place where my galpal would vote. She took her notification to the new polling place and she was not on the list, and they weren't going to allow her to vote. She had to raise mortal hell and threaten to get a news crew out at the polling place and also call the election commission for them to allow her to vote. They ended up offering her a "provisional ballot" and she refused. She wanted to vote and feel secure in that it counted.

But she wasn't on either. I drove her original one first. She hadn't moved or anything. Just dumped her elsewhere.
And this past election, all because of a representative all the way to knoxville where historically only 650 ppl vote out of 10k, thought we were crowded at our polling place. Hell, we have picnics here. So, our polling place is moved 5 miles down the road in the city part, where they already have a voting place just to make it harder.

You need ID to get your license or ID and they double check everyone’s signatures on the ballots. I think that every poll taken should always include the question, do you think you're vote matters, so we can gage people's confidence in the process. We know people don't vote but even those people will say, who they would vote for, at the same time they know that they won't vote because they think their vote won't matter. That becomes a false representation of the poll. If we knew the percentage of people polled who don't think their vote will matter, we could adress that instead of crossing our fingers wondering if there'll be a good turnout.

Whether voting is compulsory or not. I'm Canadian so I will speak on North Americans. If you live in North America specifically America and Canada you should feel obligated morally obligated to vote. I don't care if you think your vote will count or make a difference. I don't give a shit about you thinking that or if you are right or not. How many men and women died a horrific death in a foreign land away from their loved ones. All of the men and women who suffered or injured seen and done the ultimate sin allegedly of killing another human. How many families or ripped apart and never ever the same again if they even ended up being a family when the service member returned from overseas? You as a citizen should feel obligated to vote because of the sacrifice of those who died cold lonely and in a foreign land so you could have the right just the right to be able to vote. If that is not enough well that should qualify you for conscription so you can understand the Monumental fucking sacrifice they gave this country so you could have the fucking right to vote or not. It is an insult and embarrassment and shameful that someone could consciously say I don't care about all those it died and did the most horrific things in a foreign land so I could have the rights and freedoms that I do to even take 10 minutes out of my day and go to the voting booth and cast my vote. Like I said you should be qualified for conscription and that might take you 3 years maybe then you would appreciate the sacrifice of 10 minutes to vote. I don't care who you vote for or if you cast your ballot fucking empty but you should filled the moral obligation to go and vote because people fucking died literally so you could be able to vote because there are places that don't have the right to vote and if they didn't go to war and sacrifice their lives in their families you might not have the right don't you feel it's a little disrespectful to those that gave their motherfuking life so you could have the right to not exercise that right write your own name on the ballot and cast the vote for you but just honour those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for you specifically they sacrificed for you honour them by voting because ultimately that's what they were fighting for and who they were fighting for. If you choose not to vote I don't give a goddamn what's your thoughts opinions or feelings are about what is happening with our elected officials you gave up the right to have an opinion to Second you do not vote there's no debate if you don't vote you don't have a say because you gave up the right simple as that. I apologize for the lack of punctuation and grammar I'm using voice activated texting are prohibitively difficult and I apologize I went on a little rant but this subject always brings it out of me motherfukers died of horrific death alone away from their families cold wet and in misery so you could have the right would you sacrifice that I'm guessing if you don't vote you wouldn't and that is the biggest slap in the face to the men and women that did

We have spent hundreds of millions since Nov. 2020 and proved conclusively that it is not a problem. What is a problem is voters in inner cities having the number of polling places reduced and ballot boxes removed so they have to stand in line for 5 or 6 hours to vote. Preventing people from voting or making it difficult is a national problem, Why don't we vote on Sat/Sun? Make it a national holiday and allow 3 to 4 weeks of early voting to reduce crowding on election day. Eliminate gerrymandering with independent commissions or better yet group districts together to 'at large' representation and use 'Ranked Choice Voting' so third party candidates have a chance rather than winner take all.

Was any of that list of complaints about Australia - the place I asked questions about?
I noticed you started making recommendations for changes to be made in the US: well I have a few as well.
Since so many democrats claim that voter ID is racist - because you know: the coloreds aren't educated enough to obtain either drivers licenses or state identifications - that is quite legitimately the claim unironically made by democrats. I propose, social security numbers - every legal citizen has one
Over seen by multiple law enforcement agencies.
Logged and checked for duplicates, deceased entries and identity theft.
Copies of the entire voting record to be kept by the county clerks - and further copies also transported by law enforcement teams, with signed chain of custody, to a multi-agency task force to investigate for fraudulent entries.
All the individual voter has to do is show up, type in their social, type click their votes and or type in their write in entries, and then sign their name. Then off they go, easy as you please - couldn't possibly be easier, in fact. One vote, per lawfully eligible citizen.
Such a system, however, would make it remarkably difficult to forge ballots, or enter duplicate votes in different counties using "bussing", or use the names of the dead, or illegal aliens.
Which is why that's not something you would ever support implementing: *no matter how easy to access and use by the voter* - which was the focus of your post - you would never support the above system because it would make fraud significantly more difficult to accomplish.

@@ObservingLibertarian- I had assumed that you were in Australia; hence, my comment. My apologies for that.
