One of the biggest problems we face is our basic ignorance of who we are as a species. We are not rational creatures that 'think'. We see the world through our beliefs that we have gained from the culture we grew up/identify with. Thinking rationally is a skill that has to be learned and then practiced endlessly. It does not come naturally to our species as It is a tool we invented.
The earths climate has been changing since day one. We’re spinning out of control through time and space, with a wobble. The sun spots 11/9/2021 were larger than the earth. We are just a speck, on a speck, orbiting a speck, in the corner of a speck in the middle of nowhere.
You are very clearly not a climate scientist. Comments such as yours happen when you don't have enough education in the topic you opine about, yet still consider yourself to be really smart. A little knowledge is worse than none at all, in your case.
@@glennallen496 You are clearly not a climate scientist. Comments such as yours happen when you don't have enough evidence to refute statements that you don't like, yet you still hold yourself out as someone who possesses more knowledge than the person you wish to discredit. Still...why would we make it worse when we can make it better. Our speck is getting worse because of what we are doing to make profits for a few of us. Sure the universe may feel our speck is insignificant, but it is pretty important to us. So for our own sake and our own selfish interests maybe we should stop making it worse.
People, and our daily lives represent 6% of total emissions without even changing our travel habits. Each person is one 8 billionth of 6%. He is absolutely right when he talks about science and how we do research. A researcher wants their answer to be correct we really hope the answer we suggest is correct but it’s not a vanity I wanting to put our name on something we are truly hoping to solve a problem. We look for an answer for an issue that we are profoundly interested in as researchers and we want to answer our problem question it’s literally one of the things we do for a doctoral thesis. It’s almost the first thing you do after writing your name down you come up with a problem statement. Trust me I know I’m a PhD student right now trying to do research on an issue that I am profoundly impacted by mine happens to be unions in America. It’s what would be considered a social science issue but we follow the same guidelines as someone who’s doing pure scientific research. We take the same classes on data gathering we take the same classes on data analysis we use the same tools. We follow the same methods when publishing our research and our research get whacked hard by peer reviews. That’s actually what makes science what it is science it’s the review and critique of others because once you propose a solution to a problem you best bet someone is going to see if that solution works if it does we’re going to test it again if it doesn’t we’re still going to test it again. Some of the most famous theories in history have been tested hundreds of times to look for fallacies in them if we find a theory we know it to be somewhat true but we know it needs more we have no problem saying so. Einstein did when he proposed his general theory of relativity and his theory of relativity yes they are two different things. Even now we admit we don’t understand the total picture of histories we know there’s something more to it but we just don’t know what and we admit it and we continue to propose solutions that have not worked out and we don’t mind because ultimately the researcher is looking to answer the question we don’t care if it’s our name on it we just want the answer so we can research something else next. In essence we just look to add to the body of knowledge because ultimately that’s what has made the human species great it’s adding to a body of knowledge. That’s how we literally learned to make fire and then we passed that knowledge on to others that’s how we literally learned to make handtools and we passed that knowledge on to others that’s how we went from hunter gatherer to a farming community to thousands of years later more industrial and then of course we had a great breakthrough of science in the 16th century the 17th century and the industrial revolution which blew the lid off of everything. It’s when we really started asking questions tracking data doing research that we started to understand the world around us and now we can shape it to some degree. No other species does that there’s a reason why science.
What a shame that you didn't spend some of that classroom time learning how to communicate clearly. That being said, I think far too much scientific research is 'tuned' to cater to government grant money and produce favorable results. Particularly when it comes to "climate science". Not meaning to impugn you, of course, because I know nothing about you.
not only do scientists agree that the climate is changing they all agree that climates have always changed as for most of earth's history the planet was much hotter than today with tropical forests at the north & south poles and it's only in the last million years during the ice age that things cooled off and we evolved as a species .. in fact during the ice age there were 4 periods when temperatures warmed, and the glaciers retreated only to get colder again .. the issue is the effect of carbon emissions accelerating the warming as we have emerged from the last colder ice age period .. study geology and find the facts ...
Snow in Hawaii: One thing that can happen due to Global warming is the weather might become more erratic. Snow in Hawaii sounds to me like the weather is becoming more erratic. Think about water: if you heat water, some of it becomes gaseous. Water vapor in the sky form clouds. Clouds are often parts of storms. A possible reason they use 'Climate Change' instead of 'Global Warming' is that if the average global temperature changes too far in either direction, it would be a problem. Also, global warming doesn't necessarily mean that everywhere on the planet will get warmer. It is possible that some INDIVIDUAL locations might get colder due to altered weather patterns, even though AVERAGE GLOBAL TEMPERATURES are increasing
the thing about climate change in the context of politics is that we should probably embrace the idea that there will be varying ideas about what to do in the face of climate change, but one must acknowledge, regardless of one's political views. Like poverty: it exists, pure and simple. What should be done about it?
I had to stop watching half-way through the video. I agree so hard I couldn't laugh, and it just depressed me. I hate that this is material. I hate that we live in such a parody of existence that comedy loses impact because it's just real now. Keep doing this, but I wish I could laugh about it. Can we as a species maybe NOT make everything a political statement and just listen to the people WHO DEDICATED YEARS OF THEIR LIFE TO RESEARCHING THIS S***?! Then again, maybe this is just how it's meant to be. Maybe we're just fulfilling natural selection by ending the environment, and then we can all be dead sooner rather than later, and we never have to worry about bullshit like this again. Yes, let's exacerbate this. Let's just be dead now. There's a whole universe beyond Earth, it's not gonna matter if one planet covered in life dies. Statistical anomaly that it is, we can just roll over and sapient life in our little corner can vanish. Humans are ugly anyway. Hmm... Think if we got a political figure to go all out Captain Planet villain in their campaign spiel, maybe someone will get a clue? Like "Vote for me! I'll remove environmental sanctions so we can destroy the planet faster! More money for the billionaires! With me in power, no more worries about illegal dumping! It's just dumping now!"
Amen dude! Honestly, to an extent we have to let go as individuals. That doesn't mean to not stand up for what is right, but this world will fall away sooner or later. Looks like sooner. It's better not to go in fear. Humanity alone is NOT where it's at. The universe is so much bigger than us in the best ways. The universe is beyond our control and comprehension, thankfully. Otherwise we would ruin it. I don't agree with people who want to develop space or whatever. Why? So we can ruin other planets and pollute all of space and time? That's lame as Hell. Humanity is not mature enough to handle it.
Yeah, guess what. The GOP is currently trying to do damage control for McCarthy tapes leaking out and proving he thought about being a half way decent human. Damage control...for wanting to take a stand against an attempted coup. Things just keep getting better and better.
@@GeistInTheMachine One of the most depressing things I've read lately is that the solution to the Fermi paradox is that the reason we haven't found sentient life outside of our solar system is that any sentient life that could potentially progress enough to achieve interstellar travel would have self destructed well before they were able to communicate outside of their system. It's inevitable that we will exhaust all of our natural resources and destroy our planet before we will ever progress beyond our primitive state of being. It is sadly the inevitable end of nature. We should have all been content with bows and arrows and living as hunter gatherers until the sun exploded, but alas, hubris. Star Trek was but a dream. Star Wars is just a travesty.
For real, it's super depressing. George Carlin was ranting about this shit years ago- he got fucking dark and honestly I can see why. I'm glad comedians use their voice to address what's going on tho. The comedy component makes it a little more palatable for someone who might not open to actual facts in any other way. That's the hope at least!
Whether or not there is climate change is NOT at issue. There IS a climate change trend. It is absolutely clear. However, what we ARE arguing about is how much of that change is caused by humanity, how much of an impact we can have on the trending, what exactly we need to do about it, and what kinds of compromises are we willing to make to have an impact on the change.
I agree with Lewis Black. but if you don't think he's telling you the truth. I suggest you research Carl Sagan then I guarantee you will change your tune.
i agree with Lewis, but globalism is not the way to go,to destory business, jobs,to lower our standard of living by fearmogering is not the way to go,the envirotype cannot figure this out,are we all suppise to go back to the middle ages, let them go out and chop fire wood or dig coal to heat their house 10 hrs a day, like the good old days, lol.
The last time there was such an overwhelming consensus amongst scientists was back in the stone age with "Fire hot, rock hard". Climate change is a fact.
Although I can find few issues to disagree with Black on, I don't think he's cynical enough about the Democrats. Biden has not, and I'd bet a ton of money WILL NOT, "deal with climate change."
I used to live in Hawaii. It snows in Hawaii every year or there wouldn’t be a ski resort on one of the giant mountains they have on the big island which is why you could always buy t-shirts that said “ski Hawaii”.
I think Lewis should listen to Dr Patrick Moore, and give all that it a bit of a think ... Between orbital mechanics ( Milankovich Cycles ), and increased greening due to more CO2 to feed more abundant plant life, we are in for some changes for sure. And Florida, well that's mostly a wright off ... But the basis of much science and thinking about climate is looking at the carbon budget of the planet. All the carbon in oil and coal reserves PLUS all the carbon in the carbonaceous rocks (think White Cliffs of Dover) adds up to way more than is in the atmosphere now, or in the near future. We may be heading into a green house system (typical commercial green houses run CO2 at about 5X what is in the atmosphere), but that means some folks moving. Farming in the arctic, sure. New beach front towns and cities, ditto. Will it be pleasant in Wyoming in the winter in 10 years, prolly not. It ain't going to change that fast ...
People who are devoid of science knowledge don’t understand that even minor increases in the atmospheric temperatures mean that it can hold more moisture at higher temperatures than lower temperatures. This extra moisture then comes down Heavy in some areas and Lighter in other areas. Some of that precipitation will be Rain and some of it will be Snow. Regardless of people’s knowledge of Science I still get a kick out of this whole thing because I’m now 76 and when they are up to their asses I will be Long gone. Good luck Everyone

Still...why would we make it worse when we can make it better. Our speck is getting worse because of what we are doing to make profits for a few of us. Sure the universe may feel our speck is insignificant, but it is pretty important to us. So for our own sake and our own selfish interests maybe we should stop making it worse.

I remember hearing about climate change in the 90's. Why didn't people stop it when we still had a chance?
George Carlin talked about the 7 dirty words, and Lewis Black has damn near mastered 6 of them.
We have been fucked since Nixon.
not only do scientists agree that the climate is changing they all agree that climates have always changed as for most of earth's history the planet was much hotter than today with tropical forests at the north & south poles and it's only in the last million years during the ice age that things cooled off and we evolved as a species .. in fact during the ice age there were 4 periods when temperatures warmed, and the glaciers retreated only to get colder again .. the issue is the effect of carbon emissions accelerating the warming as we have emerged from the last colder ice age period .. study geology and find the facts ...
We laugh at Lewis; because, we damn well know he's right and pissed off about it. Can anyone argue with him? I wouldn't because he'll rip my face off.
Always funny and true
Sago Lewis thank you.

Snow in Hawaii:
One thing that can happen due to Global warming is the weather might become more erratic.
If you have low expectations from the start, you'll never be let down. The perfect prescription? Pessimism ;P
With at least 40% of americans adults saying the earth is like 6000 years old science has a shit load of work too do.
Love these “best of” post!

Lewis Black.
Hi Lewis ! Did you see the flooding up in southern BC Canada ?
People who are devoid of science knowledge don’t understand that even minor increases in the atmospheric temperatures mean that it can hold more moisture at higher temperatures than lower temperatures.
This extra moisture then comes down Heavy in some areas and Lighter in other areas. Some of that precipitation will be Rain and some of it will be Snow.
Regardless of people’s knowledge of Science I still get a kick out of this whole thing because I’m now 76 and when they are up to their asses I will be Long gone. Good luck Everyone
