- Weather, tides & work aligned for us this day in central Queensland hunting the enigmatic barramundi. Tim McDonald is one of the current Australian champions in spearfishing (along with Bryson Sheehy) and we’ve been diving together since 2012. There isn’t another person on the planet that has put me onto more quality fish than Tim and this day was no exception.
Later Hannah and I make an old classic, the barra burger. The wings and belly flap was shared amongst dozen of people at the Adreno Brisbane store for a live Noob Spearo Podcast episode and the frame was put into the crab pots.
Fisheries bag limits for barramundi are 5 per person, per day with a minimum size of 58cm and maximum size of 120cm. We took one nice fish each for the day which measured 105cm & 108cm.

No idea how you guys seem so calm in visibility that bad! Great hunting!
You get used to it after a while although it’s never entirely relaxing.
Like one being calm while eating raw carp 🤔
~~~~~~~~
new spearfishing video?!
Wow two of my favorite channels interacting! I’d be terrified too!
if you dive freshwater then this visibility is amazing lol
Tim Tim Tim….. The man the myth the legend
Barra time. It's always good to see content like this that shows how hard it is to get these fish, not just a video of smashing Barra and making it look easy because it never is. Keep it up mate.
Cheers Dylan! 🥇
Blessings to Tim & his wonderful family
absolutely amazing video, happy to see Tim again.
It’s been a long time between drinks on this channel with Tim that’s for sure.
I couldn’t of clicked this video faster, what a legendary duo!
Absolutely beautiful fish! Being able to not only see one, but also put a spear in it must be an awesome feeling. Chow time! I'd be in heaven.
Thanks for the calming music, there's some great footage on poo tube but i have to watch in silence. The narrative onYour videos are engaging , no huge ego flopping about, and the music is in good taste.
One dive and tim was under for quarter of the video...i was like didnt he feeling to breathe...man isa boss😎💯💯
Beautiful video as always Daniel, loved the part when you made that burger- very nice editing 😃👌🏻
Tak Frans!
Mate its great to see you out spearing with tim, and again a great video
Always a good time with Tim!
So similar conditions to Seabass fishing over here and i understand those Barramundi are elusive and hard to find like our Seabass!
They look so rough and majestic, great catches well done to bthe of you!
Great video mate and the burgers looked amazing, i got to try it!
Thanks Dimos, the burgers will work great with a shoulder slab of sea bass 😁
Dammit, i cant even hold my breath longer than Tim just sitting there watching youtube.
He’s a bit of a submarine!
Love it bru!! Thanks for the inspiration to make more vids🎬🎣🤙💪😜
Being in Mackay now I am frothing to get some Barra. Barra, black spot tuskies and coastal trout, yummo. Great video Dan, but they're all great.
Thanks mate, coming in to prime time for coastal diving around Mackay in the coming months.
Gidday from NZ! Nice work on the burger assembly segment 👌 loving your videos.
Cheers Finnian!
Awesome video again! That flesh looked so good, Gunna have to add it to my list of ones to try 👍🏼
Definitely worth it if it’s a wild saltwater one!
Barraburger looks great ! 🤤
Daaaamn that burger looked top class!! Great episode
Cheers Heinrich!
Great video again mate. The audio is extra delightful
Cheers Paul, check out Adobe speech enhancer online. It’s proper sorcery what it can do to seemingly ruined audio.
Nice catching ..great..👍
That burger! 😋🤩
Mr Daniel, thank you for your video!
You’re welcome!
Love your channel
Thanks Scarlet!
Great episode Dan! Bet it was good to be chasing some Aussie species again
Always a good time back on home soil.
great video Daniel. Well done.
Cheers Mark!
Nice video, as usual, just one tip, that I learned from a great chef from UK, that maybe you know, Chef Mike Robinson from Fish in the wild, fried fish in sunflower oil, I know it looks like less healthy, you may can add some olive oil to the sunflower oil, but not just olive oil. And deep fry it, it will come up better.
Keep going with the great videos!
Big hug from Azores Islands.
Gui Bruges 🤙
Great video sir
incredible fish! I can only imagine drenaline you must feel in that murky water and seeing the shadows emerge into monster barras! Just hope it doesn't turn into a crock instead!
Yes another vid!!!
Hope you enjoyed it
Playing secret squirrel on that location there. I don't blame ya! Super fun hearing the Ozzy slang
Secret squirrel, it was just some unfortunate fogging that happened on the GoPro at certain times 🤣🤣🤣
great video mate thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video Daniel🤘🏻
Thanks Jacob!
great vid mate!!...peace out
so nice
great video Daniel!
Cheers Adam
very good. The barramundi is big and fresh because it's cooked directly
Great spearfishing. Almost like here in Finland, visibilityvise. Love the faster pace for the cooking bit.
Thanks Tuomas, similar colour water to Finland yes. These fish can actually live in saltwater and freshwater.
Hi how can I contact you to plan a spearfishing trip in Finland? :)
Great video!
Thank you!
Beautiful fish, and tasty recipe 👏
Thankyou 🙂
@@DanielMann i really appreciated your meeting with Giacomo. I met him in Syros in 2016 and at home later. Very nice Guy, and underwater Monster🤝
Nice T-Shirt Daniel!
I got the same one and Love IT❤️
Which one? Patagonia, yakkida or dive everywhere 😁
@@DanielMann Dive everywhere 😁
Your videos motivate me so much Thank You!!! .... and glad u had a safe dive! Did u say Kewpie Mayo? lol
Yes I did, that's what it's called.
Nice Fish!
Thank you!
Thats one hell of a spot. Even in the NT, to catch a metery is a fish of a life time. Insane to see two caught in a day
I’ve been to this spot 10 years ago and had shoals of 1m + fish swimming around. After local flooding all the dam fish escaped and it was crazy in 2012/13.
I wish it was safe to get the water where i live, just to see how many barra are around. Do the fish respond well to lures at that spot?
Haven’t used a fishing rod in 15 years, no idea 🤣
Thats some dedication! I guess when you are as good at spearfishing as you are you just jump in and pick out a fish for dinner instead of messing around trying to make them eat plastic.
Looks delicious good job mate
Cheers Alex!
Sea Snakes and murky water? I'll watch from the safety of my kitchen thanks Dan. Loving your work mate!
They are generally quite placid but still I am cautious around them.
Great spearfishing action, great fishes!
Those 2m viz reminded me spearfishing for Robalo here on the Portuguese west coast 😂
Cheers!
On the west coast you probably have lots of swell as well as the 2m vis 😟
@@DanielMann part of the fun!~~~~~~~
Nice catch 4:17 !
Most of the time when I watch I think its looks great and I'd love to have a go. This time not the case, that looked very freaky. Would there be sharks or salt water Crocs in this area?
Complimenti Daniel belle catture e belle cotture.
Grazie Mario, simplice cotture ma gustoso.
This looks like the spot Tim brought me to a few years ago. Bounced off the biggest barra I’ve ever seen from less than 1m away…. Still haunts me today
Could be the same area!
Catch and cook is somehow much better than catch and release😁
The only downside is I can't take a bite myself of that jummy burger🍔😅
Balter XPA is a bloody good beer, miss that brew.
Glad you made that far in the video!
Been diving cq for over 20 years. I know it's personal choice,but I would have speared the jack. Still, as usual greatvid dan keep up the good work. Happy diving
Thanks Dave. I'd rather eat a barramundi over a jack every day of the week but like you say personal preference!
Right on the edge of croc territory. Guttsy move!
Big risk, big reward.
Nice vid mate. The audio is next level, sounds overdubbed. What mic are you using?
Just trying some new audio processing techniques as I had a few microphone issues on this trip!
That burger........I'm hungry and I just finished breakfast
😋
❤❤❤❤
Nice shot dan, recovery needs a bit of work though.Its always unnerving hunting in the lime green cordial especially when there is a chance of crocidillygators.
Yes! When a new video by Daniel Mann comes out, we connect the laptop to the big screen for full enjoyment! This is a family event!
(Okay, ours isn't really big compared to today's screens, watching TV is not our passion, but it's bigger than the one of the computer ...)
Dive safely everywhere and keep up the good work!
Thanks Joachim! Hope it went down well with the family 🙌
@@DanielMann Sure it does! And by the way: It's educational valuable content!
What's next for your trip down under? A trip to the reef I hope!
Sadly the weather didn't play ball for the reef while I was there but some very interesting local dives around Brisbane with lots of reef species!
2 tblsp Kewpie mayo
2 tblsp tomato sauce or sriracha sauce if you like it hot
1 tblsp worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper to taste, best sauce you'll ever make for seafood dishes.
Great video mate.
Will give that a go next time, thank you.
@@DanielMann no problem mate.
@Daniel Mann give me a shout out in a video if you try it haha.
Come on tim its time to drop a little video😜😋
Hey mate just a quick one, the stainless steel shackles on your trailer safety chain aren't actually rated shackles and can void your insurance :/ anyways, nice vid
Hey mate what's the name of that type of hitchlock you have on the boat trailer while it's hooked up to the car?
I guess now you have had plenty of time in the UK the murky water is just normal right? 🤣
Awesome video and some cracking fish! 👍👍
It’s a helmet hitch. www.whitworths.com.au/trailer-helmet-hitch
I’ve dived a lot of dirty stuff before moving to the U.K. so I guess the U.K. was just normal 🤣
@Daniel Mann awesome cheers dude!
you guys should try barra stim with lime+ lemon grass + chili ( thai recepi) and wallaaaa
Next time!
Bro need to come to belize 🇧🇿 so we can go spearfishing
FINALLLLYYYY. LOL
Dan, ditch the flour and egg. Just press straight into the panko crumbs. So much better, light and crunchy.
Great audio
Thank you!
What gun setup was Tim running on this day?
I think a fury 80cm roller.
any reason why the skin is often not eaten?
i find that deep fried, pan fried, steamed etc, it taste pretty good too. but i understand its personal... just curious.
Quite thick on these fish and very difficult to remove the scales. On smaller fish I definitely eat the skin though.
What kind of boat you usin bro?
C-ski 440 built by Fibretek in South Africa.
OMG It's Matt Damon
Think you just gave away the YBS secret sauce 🤫😂
I don’t think that’s ever been a secret unless you’ve never had Japanese food 🤣
The burger was very pretty, Dan. The sort of thing one might expect from a well dressed gent in London, or Milan.
If only I could afford to be a well dressed gent in Milano!
So I don't know if I'm the only one hearing this but it seems something is different about the audio. did you have to do a voice over on it.
Just some different processing as I had some issues with background noise and levels.
@@DanielMann I guess when i watch every video you put out and I have ADHD and I'm hyper focus I notice things quickly.
The bottom jaw going slack,is that true for all fish? 6:38
Yes, when they are brained correctly the jaw goes slack. Biggest tell for when it's finished.
Hey Daniel, I am a big fan of your channel, and love watching the videos. I just seen your lastest video about the spear fishing for barramundi. I was curious to where it was, but then heard you say Gladstone, and I am a young local fella who hasn’t caught a Barra yet, so I was wondering what river did you catch the fish in?
Hey Darcy, can’t say much about locations sorry but if you go back to the very start of my videos there is one about finding barramundi. It might be if some help to you.
😍😍👌👌❤❤
The barramundi are like a cross between a tarpon and a snook
Maybe just ignorance on my part, but that looks like bull shark central!? Also, my 8 year old son has just asked where the next adventure after Australia is going to be?
Touch wood never seen a bull shark in the area but I'm sure they are around. After Australia... I have some great adventures back in Greece with the current world champion!
Tell Tim to start making vids again; how is he meant to top the noonspearo list if he doesn't upload?
He stopped because I stopped making them and uploading them for him!
question - do you have to worry about crocs?
also before I forget...clears throat... "HHHHAAAAALLLIIIBBBBOOOOOTTTT"
They are around but not a huge problem in this area.
Arnt u worried about the crocs
We’re always sensible about it and read the local reports.
Do you guys have a Minimum/max size over there ?
Yes in Qld it's 58cm minimum size and 120cm maximum along with a closed season. Different rules for the Gulf and Northern Territory though.
Yes, information in the description.
@@seanprawn3315 thanks in WA it’s 55cm to 88cm.
@@DanielMann more reading less watching on my part haha cheers
How much do you have to worry about crocs while doing that?
Worrying never helped anyone 🙂 But in all seriousness it’s not super far north so not a major issue. You check for croc slides if you’re in a dodgy area.
@Daniel Mann yeah fair enough. I imagine bullsharks would be a bigger worry. They're always more aggressive in murky water it seems.
Only have bronzies and gws here in SA and tassie but still always something to think about.
Are there crocks in that regions
Can be yes
@@DanielMann that's nuts. May God keep yous safe
Are crocs a concern in that spooky looking water? I’ve seen numerous videos of yours where you’re diving FNQ rivers but you’ve never mentioned crocs
They could be present but not a huge threat in this latitude.
Yeppoon qld??
Never heard of it 👀
Great tip about the knife through the gill plate and back up into the brain. Can think of a few common species it would be safer to do so with rather than risk a slip.
Definitely worth a try!
What a fishing day Danniel! I'm sure it tasted incredibly well. Here is a tip, no long ago I found a video of a couple from Peru. They are artisans, and make leather out of fish for fashion designers. They use farmed fresh water Barramundis but the skin is almost the same. If you are interested, here there is the link which shoes almost the full process. Who knows, you could end up doing a purse or some nice shoes for your wife hehehe. Take care, and thanks for another lovely video!
th-cam.com/video/MJ65gazAroI/w-d-xo.html&feature=share
My bad, it's not Barramundi, but Paiche/Pirarucu. It reminded it me of Paiche because it does have a very similar skin, and the shape of the head it's curved like a duck's peak.
I’ve seen some fish leather in Australia before, never thought to give it a go myself.
I’m in Whitsunday bro and for some reason people have this weird attitude towards barra? Oh well more for us 😂
What about crocs? Is this not croc country.
Yes they could be there.
get out of the collo you cheeky dawgs!
Not idea what you’re talking about sorry.
froth the barra content tho!!!
Informative video, but what a bonus to see Tim McDonald great hairy chest
Aren't u scared of crocodiles?
aren't you scared of crocs in water like that?
^ fake
For a few pregnant seconds at 1:46 - I thought Tim had found a small salty until the pectoral fins flared. I reckon you'd need stainless steel man-parts to be spearing with the bulls and handbags like this at Gladstone.
Now that would have been an interesting encounter!
Mr english
