I have a job offer but I'm waiting for a better offer. What must happen?

  • You should probably accept the offer... Following up from last week's video, what if you are job hunting and get a good offer from Company A, but you have also been interviewing for Company B which is a better opportunity and you are very confident that you did well. Ideally you want to have all the offers on the table and then make a decision, but it's rarely this straight forward in the real world. In the real world you will likely have offers coming in at different times and at some point you may have to decide to accept an offer you already have, or wait for a better offer to come through.
    When making your decisions, you need to do what is best for you and your career. You should always keep this in mind when job hunting. You know your own scenario better than someone else out there. Can you afford to reject that offer and wait for another one that might not even come through? What if you end up jobless? You can always accept the offer and continue your search for a better job later. What ever you do, try not to be a jerk :D

    "A bird in hand is better than two in the bush" is some BIG truth. I'd say, and I did this before, accept what you get (having looked at the notice period) and should you get this better offer you have been waiting for, submit your resignation notice. If it is soon after you have started, chances are the company will let you go immediately so that they do not waste their time training you and they also do not have to pay you.

    • @trying2adult
      @trying2adult  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Haha well played! Yeah the company would be disappointed but if it's just after you started they'll probably be happy they haven't spent much money training you. But gotta make sure not to burn bridges though!!

    You will never know what s gonna happen next, especially with job offer, until we get a formal job offer on the table or at least approved offer, the job is still out of your hand. So, just accept the A job, then if you did tell the company B about the situation and they still can't afford for a approval, leave them behind, when you grew up, they are the one needing you.

    Im in this exact situation right now. Got 1 offer last week. Had until today to accept, but I asked for some extra time. Recruiting coordinator said, it's ok take your time. But recruiter seems to be eager for me to sign quickly. I have 2 other companies that will pay better, better benefits, better Glassdoor reviews. Just waiting to hear from them this week. I hope they hurry. Plus I want to leave my current job ASAP. Lol

    Thanks for this! I’m kind of in the same situation 😅 Haven’t received official offers yet, but next year Jan I’ll have to make my decision. Question: How do you research and compare company salaries (accurately)? I don’t think sites like Glassdoor and pay scale are accurate...

    • @trying2adult
      @trying2adult  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      🙌🙌 congratulations are in order! I hope it all goes well next year.
      With regards to salary research, yeah I agree salaries are really hard to research especially in South Africa. I haven't come across business/platform that specialise in researching salaries (like "Salary Expert" in the USA ) but perhaps I need to look harder. Platforms like glassdoor and payscale would be more reliable if they were more widely but it could be worth averaging out data from all the various sites?
      I did most of my salary research by asking friends that are employed in the same space that I was looking to go into... ofcourse it is hella awkward because very few people are comfortable speaking about their salaries but it is a very effective method. If you have friends and even colleagues you have worked with before that are employed in that same industry you wanna go into (or better yet, the same company you are applying to), you could ask something along the lines "What's a typical salary range for a at your company"... much less awkward to ask/respond to that question.

    Thanks. I just got an offer from Company A and I'm supposed to respond by the end of tomorrow (I guess, it said "offer is valid until Tuesday, February 08, 2022" I really hope that doesn't mean I have only a few hours to respond). Company A job starts Tuesday the 15th. But the HR manager at Company B said I might get an interview next week, and overall, I would prefer that job.
    I'm gonna talk to some people and ask for more advice tomorrow, but I really appreciate this video. I am probably gonna accept the job at Company A tomorrow. Like a certain wise man said, "A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush". Besides, I want to build up my resume for an even better company, and either job will suffice (probably, Company A is somewhat vague on job specifics). Liked and Subscribed.

      @@JenKumar Accepted Company A. Didn't pursue Company B further. I was a "trainee" for the first 2 months. Now, I am a Software Engineer. I moved for the job in April.
      I asked to do Analytics, and indeed I am in the Analytics department. Unfortunately, I though I'd be building Predictive Models and the like (which I have more experience in). Unfortunately, I've been working on tedious bug fixes most of the past 4-5 months. Plus, I'm the only Analytics guy not in UK/India, so time zones are an issue.
      It is nice having disposable income now tho. Coworkers are cool. Just staying on my grind as long as I can (I may quit this job next year). Either way, this experience has led me to achieve a lot of personal growth.

    Pls advice, while negotiating for a better pay from company B, do u need to mention the name of company A to B. To me this is risky.

    • @trying2adult
      @trying2adult  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Job hunting is not like looking for a girlfriend hey, it's okay to let the other person know that you have other options 😅.
      I think it depends but it's not as risky as it might feel hey.... If Company A is offering a much lower salary and company B is aware of that, then yes it might work against you cos Company B will not have an incentive to offer anything higher since nothing else beats their offer.
      However, you need to realise that companies (hiring managers) are aware that you are probably doing interviews at other companies so it wouldn't come as a surprise to them that you may have an offer elsewhere that might even be better. In fact, if you tell them you have an offer from another company, it might work in your favour cos they might end up putting in more effort into getting you to work for them (e.g. salary negotiations, faster responses, etc)...

    Hello. I need your help and need your opinion. . I got job offer last week for job A and took the position. This week i got an offer for job B which pays more, about $7k more a year. Job A is a hybrid schedule that works 2 days in the the office while Job B is hybrid schedule but have to work 4 days in the office. Job A has better medical insurance benefits than job B. I was working for job B previously for 4 years so i have seniority there if i take that while Job A is a brand new company. With all those factors said, which one would you take, Job A or B ????

    • @Scottstation222

      1. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
      2. Do what is best for YOU.
      You can't miss out on a job you have actually been offered, over a job that you "might" get ( also consider that B hasn't given you anything for 6 months ). If I was you, I would take the 3 month contract now... and if I do end up getting the 1 year contract, I can try negotiate with my current company, or just resign and start at the new 1 year contract... also, make sure to be mature in the way you hand the situation with both companies.
