  • This service is not as bad as some people say. I've never really felt like it was a complete waste of money when I've subscribed to it. However, you cannot deny that it has a ton of issues that have gone unaddressed by Nintendo and it's very important to hold them accountable for the mistakes that they've made. In this video, I will try and (hopefully) not fail to list some of the many issues of the Nintendo Switch Online service and share ideas on how to fix them.
    00:00 - Intro
03:07 - Part 1: The Quality of Emulation
10:36 - Part 2: The Selection of Games

This video is mostly an opinion piece and I definitely didn't do all the research necessary to make this a very informative video, so feel free to correct me on anything in this video that is objectively wrong. I pinned a great comment thread from LuigiBlood that's definitely worth checking out. They gave a lot of good information that I didn't know about or neglected to share. Also, I'm sorry the thumbnail is a little clickbaity and misleading but I don't really want to change it oops.
An update on something I said in the video:
I mentioned that I didn’t think games like Perfect Dark, Conker, RE2, etc. wouldn’t show up because they all have Mature ratings and Nintendo wouldn’t want that in their main apps. Some people in the comments section suggested that the age rating issue wouldn’t be a problem and there could be some way to sidestep the issue, which now seems to be the case. In Japan, they have an 18+ app for the N64 that will contain games like Goldeneye that have a CERO Z rating and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do that in the west for games like the ones I mentioned previously, so that’s cool.

I have a bunch of random huge comments about a lot of things so buckle up for a really massive comment lol
    - The color mode for Game Boy games are actually colors like how they appear when you play older GB games on Game Boy Color, some of them are completely weird and out of left field at times, but it's not the worst. Personally I love using the LCD screen filter, but I think in other display modes, it is too dark and is better to use for Game Boy Color mode.
    - You would be surprised but the N64 emulator was handled by the same team behind N64 emulation for Wii U, which is iQue (GC and Wii were handled by NST, who had previous N64 development experience). This is supposed to be an improved N64 emulator from 2015. The Wii U VC had really bad emulation already, the input lag was a lot worse and it's even where the infamous Dark Link room started to look really bad and was never ever fixed. Heck the title screen demo of Donkey Kong 64 actually desyncs and the game has widescreen support but you cannot play in widescreen mode on Wii U it would just squish the game graphically for no actually good reason.
The emulator was used for Super Mario 64 in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, where the emulation was actually pretty okay, but for some reason, a full year later, the N64 emulator regressed beyond hell. Super Mario 64 was actually emulated much much worse at launch of N64 NSO, and the Dark Link room in OoT somehow became worse than Wii U. I do not understand how such a thing happened. It is absolutely ridiculous. But what I think is that N64 may just not be iQue's strong suit. They had made a fine NES and GBC emulator for 3DS, and the GBC emulator was even reused for Kirby's Dream Collection on Wii. In fact the GBC emulator was fully replaced by NERD's brand new GBC emulator, who developed the new NES emulator for NES Mini and NSO, also SNES, and also DS on Wii U and GameCube emulation which some of its work is also powering Super Mario Galaxy and Pikmin 1+2 ports.
The GameCube emulator does very similar stuff to the N64 emulator by iQue, except it is actually done in a way smarter way. And somehow, the GBA emulator was developed by a newcomer: Panasonic Vietnam. And their emulator, as I tested with specific ROMs for testing purposes, has way high accuracy to the point of rivaling unofficial emulation. To me, that's a real accomplishment, it surpasses M2's GBA emulator on Wii U VC in every way.
The fact that the N64 emulator is still the same one from Wii U VC's 2015 emulator and somehow did not improve that much in 8 years is frankly worrying. I don't actually like putting developers under the sun, but I just feel like iQue would be best put as a support studio or developing way less complex things than a N64 emulator.
    - Fun fact the Paper Mario menu slowdown does not happen on the PAL version because of a typo in the script that they didn't fix.
    - The Controller Pak emulation has been there since Wii U actually, but for some reason, they just never used it. It's actually fully working. They added a new scripting system to allow game hacking easier, but for some reason does not even make N64 controller pak auto switching possible.
    - The thing about M rated games on NSO like Conker and Perfect Dark is actually not as unlikely as you think. Goldeneye was announced in Japan to eventually launch later this year, but that game is actually rated CERO Z, and that is the highest rating you can get in Japan. It seems though that Nintendo may be too lazy to implement an age rating filter in the apps and may just randomly bump the age rating of the entire app itself, at least if I base myself from their website saying that the age rating of the apps may just change without prior notice.
    - Dinosaur Planet will never ever show up because it was completed as Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube. The N64 game was never finished, and Nintendo will not the time to complete an old game, that was even developed by a studio they never even owned.
You mention Star Fox 2 and EarthBound Beginnings, but both games were actually completed back then, they literally held onto the finished ROMs the entire time.
Some people believed they finished Star Fox 2 for the SNES Mini, but that was never the case, it was explained by the original developers that after the game was cancelled internally, that Nintendo still wanted them to finish it back in 1995, and it underwent the same process as all the other Nintendo games, and the Nintendo gigaleak of 2020 even proved it even further that the ROM used was dated from 1995 (alongside the leak of the source code).
They do have other unreleased games and unreleased localizations, some of the latter seeing release on Wii U VC for example like Drill Dozer's European 5 language version, the japanese version of Game & Watch Gallery 4 (yup it never released in Japan before), and more recently, Magical Drop 2 on SNES NSO is actually the original US version that was approved by Nintendo in the 90s. This stuff are I think likely to show up in the future, but they are still few and between.
When it comes to unreleased games, I know Nintendo has a bunch of them. Some of them even leaked through the gigaleak with several unreleased first party Game Boy games and many other third party stuff.
    - They had unfinished 64DD emulation on Wii U that was still present... AS IS on Switch but now it's outright gone (after I datamined things and publicly talked about them on Twitter they removed all of that in the next update). If they had 64DD emulated I don't think Doshin The Giant is that unlikely to show up as Nintendo clearly doesn't mind having every version of a game to show up. There's actually an attempt to emulate Animal Crossing's clock on the N64 emulator too.
    - Square Enix is actually very much interested to release their entire library and have clearly shown some goodwill towards that. But I think they see NSO as a thing that devalues their library, and may be a lot worse to negociate with that Nintendo would probably prefer not to bother.

      - It's also hard to believe, but Nintendo managed to actually add retro games to NSO literally every single month since December 2021. If you count them regardless of consoles, it is genuinely what happened consistently up to now. Their accomplishment is how they managed to make it feel so sluggish as the consoles getting an update are just feeling really random, with some getting ignored for way too long, and the amount of games per month can go from a measly 1 to about 10 (June 2023 updates). It makes absolutely zero sense. I understand why the dripfeed is a thing, especially to bring attention to games that wouldn't get much otherwise, but the inconsistency is very much the most annoying part of NSO updates.
      - When it comes to missing first party titles, you'd be surprised but there's way more they could do for every console currently and I managed to compile a list of those missing games here that are mostly first party focused with some third parties that I felt were worth mentioning here:
      docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1q6-ETi3IdQ5y3ALuQTVGXUAiZ8YQRHFN0r0c2l0gpIU/edit#gid=1624165462
      - There's not a single server for online except for the NSO 99 games. All other games (including retro NSO apps) run purely on the connection quality of all players in P2P. I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing, because in my opinion I don't see dedicated servers as a possiblity to make online retrogaming better outside of cloud streaming. But they could have servers between players as a beacon to ease connection problems, which I haven't seen evidence of use in those apps currently. It is used in games like Mario Party Superstars and others though.
      - The N64 stick sensitivity on Switch controllers is very terrible, and I had also datamined a menu button for button remapping for N64 NSO. I'm still mad about how they didn't make that happen.
      - This is something of my own complaint: There are no PAL localizations of games on NES and SNES as of today. They still haven't added them and I am legitimately annoyed as a french who loves to play games in french when they exist. The fact that I still cannot play A Link To The Past in french (one of the very few games to have a french 60hz version even) until when they'll probably add the GBA version (which comes with Four Swords) is absolutely baffling. In fact when Nintendo France tweeted about the game, they removed the tweet after they had tons of complaints about how the game wasn't available in french.
      - When it comes to adding features:
I do absolutely agree about the use of matchmaking randoms, but I think a must have feature is to have public rooms with public passwords. I personally believe Nintendo should make games playable with more than just friends, and making a public room with a basic password protection would be great to do stuff like tournaments or maybe even streamers to get viewers to play with them.
I also wish for games to get localized without having to remake them. I think most remakes are unnecessary and most games are already playable on their own but just needs to be more approachable with english text. The NES/SNES update of September 2023 really disappointed me on that. Cool that a bunch of games from Japan came worldwide, but then they're still in japanese. Some games are fine without a translation, but I think some really needs it; and the games from that update absolutely do.
They should seriously strive to make a better online experience, and for me there's nothing sadder than how online play used to be the one dream that makes players all around the world to play together, only to get bogged down by random mentions of "please buy an Ethernet adapter" (of which I still wonder why the fuck Nintendo still didn't include one in the dock until the Switch OLED) and "please play with people closer to you".
      - About the whole ownership vs subscription thing: I will personally not buy games that are available on the subscription. I think retro games are not always worth it. In fact I thought Virtual Console was too expensive for its own good since the Wii and I only got 5 games total out of that and those 5 games were more of exceptions that confirmed the rule more than anything else.
It doesn't help that a lot of my life was just having ROM fullsets through retro game piracy, and what that taught me is more about the importance of being able to play anything you want at any time, but I think the most important part of it is being able to share the experience. NSO is in my opinion the closest thing to this kind of experience because I can tell people to play a specific game that they have access to through their sub, and it's kind of refreshing to me.
I just kind of always see ownership as something not as necessary for cultural things, what matters is access to me.
I also personally believe that Virtual Console was considered a bit of a failure by Nintendo. Something needs to be said about how Sega skipped Wii U Virtual Console entirely, they even skipped 3DS VC after a while. The result is that Nintendo and Sega worked hard to make a lot of games working and tested, writing manuals too, only for a large majority of them to just not sell, as users would just flock to the popular games. This is particularly sad to me.
I remember how Arcade Archives VS. Super Mario Bros. had joined the eShop top selling games before NSO truly launched and was given as a reason to why Virtual Console should happen, but to me it just proves people are ready to buy Super Mario Bros. again and again. It's a popular game. No one wants to buy a game called Fire & Ice or Spanky's Quest despite them being pretty good games, because they're not in the big lists.
I personally despise people who does not want to try games when they're right there as they pay a subscription. I believe the retro games subscription exists solely for Nintendo to make amends to the idea of putting unpopular games without getting their development and testing's worth.
I have a lot more to say, but at this point, this is too long. Maybe I am trying too hard, but I hope I bring lots of good and informative points here.

Around the time I got into emulators as early as May 2015, there really was no point in playing classic games on the Wii/Wii U/Switch anymore, considering that emulators are reversed engineered by fans whom were dedicated to certain consoles that needed quality of life upgrades over using 20/30 year old hardware that, at some point in it's life, will eventually die adn so will the components, hardware, CPUs, GPUs, memory banks, graphics chips, etc. in the hardware of an actual physical console. And good luck trying to get your hands on those consoles, especially ones exclusive to certain regions/countries around the world (Including Japan/Korea/China, and the others). So for me, emulation, even though it's software emulation, not hardware emulation like flashcarts and MISTer, is usually the way to go unless the company makes remake of one of their IPs to give it a fresh coat of paint for both new and old players alike. For me however, I stopped buying Nintendo products after the Nintendo Wii, and never bothered with the Switch, Wii U, PS4, PS5, Xbox One (as I like to call it "Xbox Three" and the original xbox being the actual "Xbox One" not the eight generation variant), Xbox Series X/S, and so on and so fourth. Switched over to PC/Emulation since 2015, and never looked back.
So seeing all of this to me is just from someone who took their time to go through each emulator and gave it pros and cons to each emulator for the overall fun, quality, speed, and options, and games included in that specific emulator on the Nintendo Service Online system.

I feel like the best scenario would be to straight up allow unofficial emulators on their digital store fronts. It will absolutely never happen and it obviously opens up the flood gates to piracy, but I feel like one of the biggest motivating factors for hacking these systems is to play older games via emulation. Allowing the use of unofficial emulators on these systems does more good than harm; the peeps who have Xboxes can personally testify to this too. Those guys are literally living in retro gaming heaven right now.
I also don’t think we’ll ever see gamecube games on NSO. If they weren’t willing to do it during the wii u era when they could have benefited from it the most, and during a time when those games could have ran natively on the console, then that tells me Nintendo is content with never releasing these games on these types of services. I am glad they are finally re releasing some of these games recently (the idea that they might do more with a game instead of just plopping it on NSO and calling it a day is also cool), but it only supports the idea that they’ll never come to NSO or any equivalent service in the future, or it’s at least very unlikely imo. (Also, gotta say I really enjoyed the music selection for this video. I’m really glad to have watched this video. Very interesting discussion)

My biggest issue with NSO is that I'm a long-term buyer. If I buy a game, I expect to play it for decades to come. I *still* play my 3DS regularly. I *still* play my Gamecube regularly. I like that there's finally some bangers for me as well (I really wasn't a fan of the platformer heavy NES/SNES days) but honestly? I'd rather buy a game I enjoy this long after its original release in a way that isn't gonna vanish some day. I'm an absolute Pokemon TCG Gameboy addict for example, and playing this in good visual quality on a TV screen while lounge on the couch? Amazing - like, actually "I went from barely caring to regularly playing the Gameboy app" amazing, because I love the game that much. Pokemon RBY and GSC would totally have the same effect on me, heck, they would probably make me go and finally get the N64 upgrade if they're compatible with Stadium 1/2.
But we don't know what Nintendo will do with this library once they move on from the Switch, but I have no faith they'll just make these libraries available indefinitely. I *know* I'm the type to play my favorite games long beyond support, so the Netflixification of Nintendo classics worries me.

The subscription/one-time purchase hybrid idea you suggested is honestly ingenious, and I'd say that's exactly why they wouldn't do it, but they kind of already do the exact same thing with the Expansion Pack DLC like the Mario Kart Booster Pack.
Also just glad to hear someone reasonably mention how unbearably slow this release pace is. Seriously, the fact that the GBA support was added seven months ago, and yet Zero Mission and Amazing Mirror are still nowhere in sight is just flat-out inexcusable. Then again, it's obvious they're just dragging it out to keep people subscribed.
I just hope that they don't reset it all next generation, and frankly bringing it all back over, whether this system is indeed just the Switch 2 or not, should not be hard at all for Nintendo anymore. Then again, you can never be too sure with Nintendo in terms of stuff like this.

I think the game collection idea could actually work; at a bit of caveat, but still.
Imagine, it's nearing the end of the Switch's lifetime. Nintendo knows the service is gonna be out, and they have seen people be willing to shell out money for separate games they really enjoyed since that's what they used to do on Virtual Console for several consoles straight.
Your suggestion could work, only that I don't think they'd make it free. It'd likely just be a small fee per game, but considering how many people would likely buy most of the heavyhitters like the Zelda games or really anything with Mario's name on it, they could still make one final margin of profit from Switch owners before their new system releases.
Best case scenario, this would allow Pokemon Home to be compatible with the Pokemon Stadium titles, albeit with similar stats-changing restrictions it has between games (and probably a better tracking of every ability/movepool a single 'mon has had [or could have] in every Switch game it can be).

This video was so good! It was a very thorough breakdown and I learned a lot about the NSO games I haven't played yet/don't have at my subscription level. Also the presentation was so cozy! Just subscribed! I'm curious if the lack of Pokemon has to do with TPCI/GameFreak wanting to implement Home support? They had Home and Bank on 3DS and I'm 99% sure the Gameboy games from the EShop were connected. But on Switch, they can't even launch their new games with Home support, let alone getting it to communicate with the NSO system. I don't think the majority of players would be heartbroken if they could only transfer their NSO Gameboy Pokemon into the Stadium games and not into Gen 9, but the forwards compatibility of Pokemon has always been a core part of the franchise, even to its detriment. I think you're right that people would rush to buy the higher NSO tier if it meant they had access to Pokemon. I would love to see rereleases of the GBA games now that 3DS is on the way out, and with it the Gen 3 remakes. That being said, it would be even more of an accomplishment if they could implement full Home support with NSO, and I really do think they're waiting for that before they announce anything. They've been rushing their products out the door the past few years so if they actually have a functional title on launch, it'll be worth the wait (even for games older than me lol). I also hope they put Pokemon Channel on NSO when they start adding Gamecube titles. I don't know if they could add Hey You Pikachu because of the lack of mic support, but I love all those silly side games they made back in the day and Channel would be so perfect in the NSO library!

It seems like such an easy thing to fix their servers or actually make their monthly sub compelling, but ??? I'll probably be 80 when the words Nintendo and Online can be paired together with pride.
Also, great vid! Love the sound balance and the clips and the script. Your personality is really shining through!

They should add the finished but never released Pokémon Picross for the gameboy color. There’s a prototype rom online that works from begging to the credits and I think that would be cool to see a real release.

I think NSO currently isn't neither good or bad, maybe an OK, but as i see it what it needs to improve is: Get more consoles such as Gamecube, wii, ds/3ds, next to that keep and improve ts free dlc policy and a better online infraestructure, i mean the best games from all Nintendo console gens would make it a good deal, i think they should also allow virtual console as it was on wii as an option for ppl who wants to buy specific games, something like gamepass pretty sure its not doable, or atleast not currently (i mean they could, but the build up would be a pain in the ass since at the start its a loss of money), there's also this Nintendo TV thing, which i don't know really what they plan about this, making a subscription just like Netflix, Disney plus, etc? Only for their own productions? Its kind of hard to tell as it would need constant new content to keep ppl paying every month

I really enjoyed this video. Glad to see you gave a level headed critique instead of just a sensationalized angry rant.
When it comes to the "Big Problem", I think it's worth noting how back in 2013 it was a VERY common sentiment that Virtual Console should be retired and replaced with a "Netflix-like subscription service". I always thought that was a bad idea but Nintendo listened and made it and now we're stuck with it.
Worth noting btw that while N64 games had atrocious input lag at launch, it was still better than the Wii U N64 Virtual Console which was completely unplayable due to lag. And GameCube straight up won't happen on Switch due to technical reasons. GCN games are 1.4GB each uncompressed and many games have issues loading in a compressed states. It's unfortunate but most people don't have enough storage for that on their Switch. Each NSO game is downloaded at once, so a GCN app would get VERY big very quickly.

I do want to add one thing about "buying" online.
All purchases online on PSN and XBox, even Steam are not sales of ownership they are a lease. Not the Game Pass or PS+. All sales are simply, "We give you permission to play this game till we say you can't play the game anymore". Nintendo is just more blatant with their service.
One more thing. Licensing! Nintendo does need to contact the holder of said game to acquire permission to use a game on their service from the license holder. If the license holder is MIA, no game.

I just wish they'd at least try to merge the multiple regional catalogues, at least for NES and SNES, it's annoying to have to make different regional accounts because they decided to release a game I want to play in another region despite proving they can absolutely roll out translations for games
I'm not even upset about any of the obscure nonsense that got added, there's plenty fun to be had with Prehistorik Man and Smash Tennis
Addendum; what REALLY gets my goat about SP versions is that we could have gotten more games instead of John Nintando's favourite employee, Jimmy Nintendy, being allowed to send out silly little savestates that nobody wants

19:16 dang, on Wii U *and* the Wii U?
Also, I believe the reason the GB Pokémon games aren’t on NSO is because things like saves states and the rewind feature would ruin the spirit of those games. So unless they can disable those for specific games, I’m not sure if those will come.

My biggest issue with these shops is why would I buy them when the shops shutdown, lack of transfers for purchased assets to persist beyond the systems lifespan, and I also would like to have the games to play legally on my PC and mobile devices.
I can't actively support purchasing such when it so actively goes against what I want to have happen with easy accessibility for older titles. It shouldn't have the responsibility of system owners to keep preserving purchased titles that keep getting re-released to new systems they have to buy all over again

I’m super glad that Nintendo didn’t lock MK8’s dlc behind NSO. Very thankful that I still have my Wii from when I was a kid with all the VC games I bought. The subscription based system has always just felt kind of flimsy to me.
