Gunpei Yokoi was an absolute genius. I really enjoyed seeing a leader touring his company, seeing the potential of a random worker, and bringing his talents to the forefront. Nintendo's story shows intuition, taking gambits, and following a creed. Great video!
Did anyone else catch that? That little toy Gunpei had was called the Ultra Hand. Zelda made a little tribute to this by giving link an ability called Ultrahand in TotK

That part about Kirby is absolutely false. Kirby was directly named after and inspired by the Kirby vacuum which the creator of Kirby's mom had as a child growing up. That's why Kirby's powér is literally inhaling enemies and taking they're power or skill!
So in the beginning the Yakuza was Nintendo's biggest buyer. And now 150 years later they're the mob themselves.
This man did more for Nintendo then all of his ancestors combined. This man is legendary. So many hot products that are timeless and unique. Pokémon, game boy, Mario, Nintendo nes. They own that entire scene it’s crazy how they’ve impacted the entire world.

I find it a little disappointing that you didn't mention the Nintendo DS at all. At one point it was Nintendo's most important portable console as it had one of the first touch screen technologies, and also started the normalization of wireless technology in multi-player gaming. But I guess most people don't think much of it anymore now that everything has both touch and wireless.
Could also have mentioned that the DS/3DS dragged Nintendo through the Wii U times which was not that successful as a home console (shitty marketing, the console was actually cool 😢).

Didn't mention the Blockbuster lawsuit. That was a big loss for them as people could rent games instead of buying.
The N64 was not mentioned😢 IMHO that was one of Nintendo’s greatest systems. It used texture mapping before Sony did on the 32-bit PS. While carts were limited in memory, there were not the same load times as with CD based games. The controller was revolutionary in ability to be used multiple ways.

You are forgetting one of the biggest chapters, which was the 64 bit phase of going 3d. That was insane when it came out and everyone was talking about it.

@@JJFX- Well, why don't I go straight for the jugular and start with the basic info anyone should know... That there was no "princess" in Donkey Kong. They said it out loud and flashed a character that didn't even exist yet on the screen while talking about that game.
@@yomama9390 Well yeah fair enough, they definitely mixed up Pauline and Peach. I wouldn't say it's a critical mistake to the story but it's certainly wrong.
@@JJFX- they also showed the wrong game on screen a couple of times. For example, they were talking about the success of Super Mario Bros. But we're showing footage of Mario Bros. for the arcade despite the video being about the NES game.
They also were referring to Japanese people rather oddly. You wouldn't really refer to yamauchi by his first name in most context, but they repeatedly kept using first names instead of surnames, which isn't really how you would do that

@@inthefadeA friend and I rented Mortal Kombat II from Blockbuster ( yes I'm aging myself) for SNES and there was no blood, I remember they were trying to ban the game due to all the blood and gore back then.
Not exactly, there was some inconsistencies and incorrect information regarding Nintendo's past, he didn't even mention Gunpei Yokoi who created the original Gameboy and died in a car crash 🤔
Nintendo had such a grip on developers in the 80s, it's why the Master System or Mark 3 didn't do as well because Nintendo wouldn't let people make games for the NES if they also made games for a SEGA console.
This might have been the first video I've seen with two sponsors but this video is still an interesting history of Nintendo. I had no idea they started as a gambling card company and went through so many challenges.

I still have my original NES, a top loader, and a SNES. I got into other systems after those, like PS, Dreamcast. I still love Nintendo. The 80's was a great time for kids.
No company is free of shame and sketchy practices.
I’m not excusing Nintendo, but it’s a fact.
Some are worse than others obviously, but Nintendo has given me so many hours of joyful entertainment.
I’ll never forget my elementary and middle school years in the late 90’s/early 2000’s.
I was the first on the bus in the mornings, and last off after school. You’re looking at about 2.5 extra hours a day just riding the bus.
In the 4th grade, I got my first game boy along with Pokémon yellow.
I had so much fun and it really made my bus rides enjoyable.
Then endless hours on my N64 and then GameCube and then Wii.
20 years later and I’m playing on the switch, which I absolutely love.
Thank you for the hours of pure enjoyment, Nintendo!
A game is never late, nor is it early, it arrives precisely when it means to.
Gunpei Yokoi was really the brilliant mind behind the company, good thing Hiroshi had good business sense to capitalize on it.
Obviously Miyamoto was crucial for their ultimate prolonged success, but Gunpei was the one really thinking outside of the box.
Nintendo would have been very successful without Miyamoto, but without Gunpei, we probably wouldn't have heard of them in the west.
Miyamoto changed the way to make videogames by introducing his industrial design experience into development. Then everyone started to do the same. He had a huge influence on videogames industry for decades.

Gunpei is the invetor of the D-pad, that's one the reason of my subjective belief that Nintendo invented the videogames ( or at least video games as we know them)

I worked for a Japanesse company before the pandemic and witness first hand how they can be overly protected with their IP's. However, in my experience their "decline" is due to their lack of adaptability and resist to change. It's fascinating how the Japanesse people were so creative, out of the box and innovative back in the days. I hope their younger generation can plea a case to their elderly leaders and reference their superior innovative quality in the past.
I wonder if you placed a graph of their creativity over a graph of their population demographics you’d see a correlation. Japan has an old person problem.

Nintendo is on life support from the Zelda and Pokémon franchise.
Japan is always known as one of the leaders in the Auto industry and Electronics industry. Kindly note Sony and Panasonic are Japanese brands with American offices. Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan , Toyota are more reliable than any car made in Detroit.

While this documentary is amazing, Nintendo's history is not the property of this man-history is public domain so it would be weird to pay money to a youtuber to make a movie about easily-accessible information.

@@LordMarlle Agreed. There's quite a bit that got skipped/glossed over, and the whole build-up to its controversies was for hardly a minute of discussing it at the very end like a minor footnote. It played like a Nintendo advertisement unfortunately.
The issue with Nintendo is they keep making new systems around only a few games. Mario,Zelda. Nintendo needs to focus on creating a new fresh idea. They need to rebrand themselves.
Without the internet, those Nintendo magazines were everything!! Its been over 3 decades since I thought of that magazine, but if you could convince your mom to buy one, you were in heaven!!

this goes so in-depth but what makes this video special is that it has a precise timeline before the video game ventures which wasn't always handled with the same care as anything documented after the video game production while this video does. for that you guys deserve props for all the effort

You forgot to mention that Shigeru Miyamoto basically produced clones of Namco games from Pac Man to Pac-Land for the Family Computer especially Super Mario Bros

As a TITAN of gaming, it's expected it crushes it's competition, with good games. It's an unstoppable force and unlike most AAA companies, they sell fun, not gambling. For over 30 years. That's respectable.
As a kid I grew up with Sonic, Alex the Kid, Golden Axe, Altred Beast, Mario Kart and Tetris until Gran Turismo came along. Then it was CounterStrike & Starcraft. Now I'm just an old grump 😔🤣

This was a great trip down memory lane. Informative and thought provoking. Taking chances pay off big. I remember not sleeping for weeks playing Final fantasy until my dad grounded me from playing. I would cover up the red light with a shirt or something play until he got home. And when he went to bed and stopped when he woke up. Good times.
Moral of the story, Gunpei is the real hero of Nintendo
So, basically, Gunpei carried the business while Hiroshi nerfed it and brought it near bankruptcy many times.
But it was Hiroshi who made the decision to believe in Gunpei and understood the market. Idk just another pov.
If there was no Gunpei, there would be no Nintendo. His toy creations saved the company and then his handheld contributions lifted Nintendo into the limelight.
Was disappointed there was no mention of his death in this though.
Tbf Hiroshi did push the Famicom/NES which went on to be massively successful

How did you leave out Nintendo 64 and 64 games that changed gaming like Mario, Zelda, and Goldeneye? That was arguably the single most influential moment in gaming history.
Not even close being influential. Mario 64 was a glorified tech demo, it's not a good game. Zelda was recycled content with worse mechanics than the lttp. Golden eye ran at 15 fps, it's a shit show of a game. Those are just facts.
It was important as Mario 64 showed that 3D was here to stay and how to do it right. I wouldn't say "the most influential" ever. For its time in early 3D it was absolutely setting a standard. Some would argue that the original Mario Brothers on NES was the most influential. Regardless of ones opinion, Nintendo, in general, has set many milestones and industry firsts that have affected all of gaming.
@@TommyMcDYou're comparing innovations of ~35 years ago to standards of today. Not only that, but saying _Zelda itself_ was recycled content is a huge misunderstanding; this was only true in the case of _some assets_ in Ocarina of Time being reused in Majora's Mask.
The absolutely best ad placement I have seen on TH-cam in a long time. Made staying immersed in the first rate story telling so much easier. Could literally tell which was the spam ad that TH-cam placed.

I grew up with Nintendo,starting with the release of the NES. I was about 6 years old when I first saw one. I played Super Mario World for the first time and I have been a lifelong Nintendo fan. The new consoles and game never cease to amaze me.

Yes, my husband bought the first NES. Our son was 4 & he was hooked! Watching him & his dad playing & making their way through the different worlds, etc. Our son was first to ‘save the Princess’! Then the game reversed, different colors & such. Nic actually still has that console & all games to this day! (Us parents got hooked on the Monopoly game)!

Got a Radarscope cabinet at home. Great piece of history. The first female character in DK was actually Pauline. Not Peach. Pauline makes an appearance in the Donk City in Super Mario Odyssey as the Major.

They sneak in a few nods to Nintendo’s history in the Pikmin series. Those first batch of collectible cards design by Yamauchi are collectibles in Pikmin 4 Koppai is the name of the planet and race that Alph and Brittany are from in Pikmin 3. Pretty neat.
My grandma bought me a NES for Christmas when it first came out. I still remember my older brother setting it up and we played it for the first time. We played zelda all night and he used to smoke pot and get the munchies so I always suggested Dunkin doughnuts during our game time as a 7 year old. Great memories.

Great video, well put together and a nice introduction for people that knew little to nothing about Nintendo's history. There were two inaccuracies I found on my first viewing of the video, Donkey Kong was NOT always called Donkey Kong, he was Monkey Kong and due to an error in translation the name Donkey Kong stuck. Second, though cited as one of many factors in Mario's development, the former landlord was NOT the definitive source for Mario's name. It's worth noting also that Shigeru has cited his childhood of cave exploration as his main inspiration for creating Zelda. I don't think there's much else if anything to point out other than the video would have benefitted from being a tad longer but it was a good video none the less. Thank you.

The NES system will always have a special place in my childhood memories! I had soooo much fun playing all the amazing games on the NES, Super Nes, Gameboy, N64, Wii and Switch! I love my Playstation and Xbox also, but Nintendo continues to create new and exciting worlds to play in!

I was actually at the Atari dig in Alamogordo, NM. Just so happened to be my hometown, and I moved back for a bit around that time lol. It was a fun time! I was actually able to hold and take a pic with one of the carts. FYI it wasn’t just ET, it was all kinds of games, and even consoles and controllers. Actually the first item they found that told us we were right was a joystick lmao. Some kid found it while walking to the bathroom. It must have flew that way because it was very windy that day and they were digging.

Good video, but what's with all the footage of the recent mini console reissues in place of the NES and SNES?
Well met, the card game was indeed intended as it is. It also goes onto a philosophy I take up when starting some fan groups.
Rather than chase trends, find the things that are wanted and left largely untapped. Open the door to those things wanted back, gather people, others realize there's market potential and build into it as numbers grow.
A grand underdog deserves a way out, and if others aren't doing it, it can be a significant maneuver to know where you can be the return or even an adapted new trend starter on a grand idea, rather than just another tail coat rider.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with joining in on something already started, but the bold can find reward in concentrating into the ones that deserve push that aren't there yet. The grandest heroes of a movement are the ones willing to push in when it wasn't an over saturated hodgepodge. Being bold and effort means you were there when you were needed. Not just trying to chase an already over saturated mountain already turned into a well settled hill or facility.
Make available the desire on a fun and smart level where not a lot of others are.
This brings back memories. I was a young adult with very young children when the Nintendo console came out. Played it at my neighbors for the first time, then my nephews and later my own kids. It was a lot of fun and very good memories.
Makes me so grateful and happy to see how far the gaming industry has come. Nintendo/Sega/Sony were peak childhood for lot of us throughout the years. Whatever the case is, it's been an amazing journey for all gamers and the gaming industry. Kudos to all

as some one from the UK it still funny to see how big nintendo was as here I only knew one person that had a Nintendo and that was my sisters I had a master system and we had a BBC Micro, most people in the UK owned either a Sega Master System or some kind of home computer for playing games, it was easier to convince parents to buy something like a ZX Spectrum or Commodore system as you could use it for "Education" and that was seen as a good reason to own one, I had a BBC Micro cus that the computers we had at school best part ose one of the school computers had dual disk drive so I would save pocket money buy floppy's and copy all the games we use to play in school, two of the ones I remember was a game called Pop & Grannies Garden, we also never had a video game colapse like the USA thanks to home computers being far more popular for gaming than consoles at the time.

The original Nes did not sell for a little over 100 dollars upon release. It hit the market at $199 and it came with Gyromite and Duck Hunt in 1985. Super Mario Brothers was not included in the package until 1986. For reference- $199 was cheap for the time. The Sega Master System would also launch at $199 that same year (1986). I got both my Nes and Master System in 1986.

I was confused that you said it was originally called Nintendo Koppai while on Wikipedia, it says that the company was Karuta.
Then, I saw a footnote that '骨牌' can be read as both 'karuta' and 'koppai'. I could be wrong in the distinction here, but I think it's from how almost every Kanji has two readings, one based on the original Chinese pronunciation and one that's Japanese (like more nativized).

Universal. Going from trying to step on Nintendo, to being on it's knees with a mouth dropped wide open for more than just awe. Still, everyone makes mistakes. Especially when in the view of thinking they could make a quick mass of bucks. Some companies simply need to be taught harsh lessons to get back on track.
Just look at what happened to SONY in 2011.
As a creator am so thankful that u can post back on your channel.. u make nice and awesome documentaries..I would suggest you open your company in delware and incorporate ur youtube channel incase someone wants to do something ridiculous ,u can counter sue them back... coz now it's not you. U will be employed under the company and working on your channel...All in all.. I love ur notifications and videos.. Love magnates media, wonderful episode as always, id be curious to see if Nintendo says anything to you about your footage in this video. Hopefully not obviously, but what exactly separates what you are doing in this video from other content creators using Nintendo game clips? If anyone has any thoughts id be curious to hear some opinions.
some other trivia: nintendo deciding to stick with cartridges instead of discs caused a rift between them and squaresoft, producing games for the playstation/pc exclusively only for a very long time, which would be one of the main deciding factors of sony playstation's success in the west by releasing final fantasy 7 (also demo discs ofc), which probably still is to this day one of the most played and well-known jrpgs today.... some of these game developer companies' histories are also insane

I still have my original Nintendo from back in the day with duck hunt and the gun with it. I still have about 20 original games, including original Mario and original Zelda with the gold case.

Ironically I can't deny it was the recognition of characters that lead me to watch the recent movie release. I was blown away to realize they have opted to open or pay a studio to make something.
