DENMAN BRUSH VS TANGLE TEEZER (does your hair brush matter?)

  • DENMAN VS TANGLE TEEZER - brush styling battle! I’ve used both of these brushes in the past and gotten amazing results with both because it’s not about the brush, but how you use it - and your hair type.
    Denman Brush Link👉🏻 amzn.to/41YLNag
    Tangle Teezer Link👉🏻 amzn.to/44oudyg
For long/fine/fragile hair: Opt to use a more gentle brush like the tangle teezer when brushing your curls/styling this way to define them because it will be more gentle as well as be multi-purpose.
The Denman brush is a great styling brush, and what’s cool if you can customize your results when using this by removing rows for less tension, which is beneficial for finer hair types and looser curl textures, or by using a different styling technique vs my Ribbon Curls Technique. As a professional, it’s a must-have tool but it’s not all-purpose so I don’t recommend it for detangling or if your hair is damaged and breaks easily. Always test your elasticity & porosity and use the right products to nourish & protect your hair.
Do you have both of these tools? One or the other? What has been your experience? Individual results will vary but the following rules prevail:
👉🏻Make sure the hair is evenly saturated with water. The hair does not have to be soaking wet to style, but you want to make sure water is evenly distributed from root to tip.
👉🏻It’s all about how you section your hair. The cleaner your parts, the more defined the curls will look - plus it’s easier to get in close to the root without grabbing hair you shouldn’t be.
    📏 SECTION SIZE MEASUREMENTS 📏
Wavy Hair: The section should be about 1.5-2.5 inches thick
Curly Hair: The section should be about .5-1.5 inches thick
Coily Hair: The section should be about .5- 1/4 inch thich

100% tangle teaser for me. The Denman is too hard and stiff for my fine hairs.I uses a wide tooth comb for extra clumping or separate if needed.

For my fine, low density 3a curls I prefer Tangle Teezer over Denman. I typically have straighter roots with the Denman, the tension pulls the roots straight and my hair never recovers. The ends are very curly but it looks like I’m growing out a perm, not the look I’m going for.

You have just exactly described the problem I have using the Denman!! My fine hair looks stupid using the Denman, especially at the sides!
I have very fine, low density hair too, like you.
I am going to dig my Tangle Teezer back out of hibernation...

Already has! I have been wetting my hair down & playing a little. The TT is better for my roots. & I found that using it at a bit less than a 90 degree angle also helps. My hair sit more naturally, giving more volume at the ends while I grow some too short layers out.
Thank you for some science! 😁

I own them both. I use the Tangle Teezer paddle brush in the shower to detangle after applying conditioner, after rinsing conditioner out, and after spraying in a bit of leave-in conditioner. I use the Denman to style my wet hair.

  • @nataliedean7551

I recently got a tangle teaser brush. It separated and defined my curls better than the Denman brush, plus, it was so much easier on my arms, because the brush just slid easily through my hair. I have thick hair, so I have to style in smaller sections, and it can be a little tiring on my arms. Usually, I like my hair better a couple days after styling, but I loved my hair right after styling with the tangle teaser!
Oh, and I forgot to say, I liked the side with the tangle teaser better. The curls seemed to have more shrinkage, and your hair had more curl closer to the root. Plus, the tangle teaser side looked more defined, full, and organized, if that makes sense. But I know we all have one side of our heads that usually performs better than the other, and maybe that made a difference too. Only way to know for sure is to switch sides and see if the results are the same or different.

I have the Mint green Tangle Teezer, it’s the one made for fine hair; it’s the only brush that gives me a pain-free detangling and believe me when I let my hair go curly the horrible knots and tangles are no joke 😢 I don’t know what I’d do without my Tangle Teezer.

I have straight, dense, coarse hair (think literal horse hair) with a lot of volume, so this channel has really helped me understand styling my more "wild" hair type. I bought a generic Denman after years of paddle brushing, and it actually detangles better! That tension and verticle positioning helps dig into those middle sections of hair that never get to see daylight, and there's no snagging! That brush legitimately tames my frizz and since there's no actual curl, I get a sleeker style with more movement than if I just used a regular detangling brush. I give it bonus points for helping to distribute spray-on products because I can coat the brush and then run it through my hair. That seems to work better than spraying tiny sections of my haystack at a time so I use much less product.

  • @christina6254
    @christina6254 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I use both. I detangle and distribute products through with Tangle Teezer and then style with Denman. Mell, your hair is so pretty both ways! There are so many variables like weather and the condition of our hair…I love that Mell gives us so many options to try.

I bought my first Tangle Teezer probably in 2018 and got a Denman the same year, I've always favored the Tangle Teezer. I use the ones without a handle for detangling in the shower or travel. I use the handle brush for detangling and styling on wash day.

I've always hated the denman, from my mother pulling the head off me to whacking me with it for whinging about pain, definitely not for fine long straight hair, it gets stuck A LOT. There was a trend in the 80s where every house had one.

  • @natalyk7207
    @natalyk7207 ปีที่แล้ว +7

When in hurry and not doing super clean sections I can be more messy with a tangle teezer without the risk of pulling my hair out. If I am spending time and being thorough, I think Denman is more of a precision tool that gives slightly more defined tight curl especially close to the root. I am rarely that thorough and on occasion can get lazy at some point, so usually grab the tangle teezer. Again, if I am that thorough, it's not that much behind either

I like the Denman Mini Paddle brush for styling much more than that 7 row one. Tangle teaser is nice enough but the teeth are quite scratchy on the scalp I've found. Ow. Prefer the Wet Brush shower brush for de-tangling; very flexible and gentle tines vs the TT.

I tried using one of these detangling teasers to do your brush through technique on my wavy hair, but it made my waves much more separated and less defined. So I think I’m going to just stick with zero combing or using a wide tooth comb (like those massive wide detangling types) as I had in the past

I use both. I start with tangle teezer and my favorite detangler/ leave in then Define needed area with Donna brush (same as denman but sturdier imo and cheaper). Once that’s done I seal it off by scrunching a gel in there then won’t flake. I’m absolutely love she’s moisture coconut oil gel! Very hydrating and a great way to prevent frizz or touch up two day old curls

❤❤❤❤ psst: Amazon has GREAT prices on many detanglers
& guess what? They’re just like the plastic ones we’ve used for yrs to detangle horse’s long tails🤣
( 🐩I use ‘em for dog coats too, especially poodles since they grow dog hair not dog fur❤)
I feel both detangler & a Denman are important to my hair styles, as are my fingers for curls ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    NEITHER!
For some reason the Denam brush doesn’t give me curl definition anymore and the tangle tweezer (while good at detangling) makes my curls stringy.
I use the EZ detangling brush (which is meant for curlier/kinkier hair) or a dupe similar to that and that gives me better curl definition

Looks like it’s still a matter of trying them for yourself and seeing which one works better for your hair, I like the look of the side you did with the tangle teezer personally because it looks more voluminous. I had 3’ long densely growing superfine strands of flat limp hair before I cut it off to donate and I liked the tangle teezer to detangle as a first step then I would go over everything with a fine comb because I couldn’t get all of the knots out completely with just the tangle teezer after the knots had been reduced to being three or four hairs together in a tight knot then I would cut the knot out with my hair scissors after I had found it with the fine tooth comb so that it wouldn’t retangle around that knot overnight, I could also find a lot of split ends like that and trim them above the damaged part so that they wouldn’t become the start of a knot either.

I have the Denman, wet brush, and tangle teaser. Denman is ok, but defeats the purpose to use a brush to detangle and separate brush to style. Wet brush is crap in my hair. The bristles broke off while trying to detangle. TT is a win for my long wavy/curly hair. Your TT side looks fuller and more defined. The Denman side looks frizzier.

should i scrunch the section after brushing through to encourage curls to form? i have a similar texture and pretty long hair, so i feel the need to scrunch each section after brush styling

I scrunch each section after brushing with a tangle teezer and I have medium/coarse, very high density, boob length when wet, in other words….a LOT of hair! Unless I do each section I end up with wavy bits instead of my usual coily curls

I love that you made a video about that, I'm from Brazil so i was never able to have a denman brush until now, but i already had a tangle teezer. What worried me about the denman brush is exactly the tension and i was afraid of breakage even tho my hair is actually pretty course (tho it is long), with regular tension do you think it's still possible to care breakage to the hair?

I've never been able to get the denman to work for me, I was so disappointed when I first bought it 😅 I'm not even sure where it is at this point, I've just always used my tangle teezer!

Any tips on how yo get the clean without a mirror. I can’t see the back to know if it’s right. I’ve been debating going back to my Denman from my Tangle Teaser. For some reason, I lose my way once I get to the crown if I’m using my Denman. I’ve had way less processing in the last 2 years, & now curls won’t hold.
Off topic thank you. My salon closed & my stylist only had a few clients & worked full time at another job. it was more hobby with a little income. She’s likely done doing hair.
I live in a small town. A curly specialist was not going to happen, but I knew what to look for thanks to you. I go May 19. She “loves” her curly clients. She said to come in with my hair with only a leave in/detangler, no other products. Bring pics of styles I like & even more vital, good pics of my hair so she can see the curl pattern. She & the salon post most of their clients on Instagram.
I was not influenced in any way by the free wine or the “lush slush” speciality drink. 😂

Does a Denman brush help “accentuate” waves that turn into slight curls? My hair is naturally beach bum messy/wavy with loose curls towards the ends if I let it do it’s own thing. Curious if a denman can help bring those natural curls out a bit more after I detangle so it looks more put together rather than beach bum 😂

I've had curly and wavy hair my entire life. I am tired of straightening it out. It never straightens totally and so now I am just letting it go curly. I don't understand why you need tension when brushing. New to all this.

    • @stargazer496
      @stargazer496 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's like when you curl a ribbon with scissors you know? the tension and whatever with the scissors makes the ribbon curl. Same with tension from the brush on your hair. Hope that makes sense 😁

😂😂😂 I’m seriously surprised, I’m like why’s the Tangle Teezer side more defined than the Denman Brush.
Your Denman Brush is 7 rows? I feel it’s because it has lesser bristles and overall of course, it is a different styled brush between the two, I feel that’s the difference, the more swooping bristles to brush, the more definition it gave your hair.* -> Tangle Teezer in this case surprisingly benefited your hair.
I personally have the black 9 row Denman Brush & it does a pretty good job & does help me ‘disentangle quicker But I do agree that wooden paddle brushes help glide everything so much better (at least on my straightened hair days). Since Tangle Teezer is specifically for wet hair, [and is a paddle brush 😌], I’ll surely pick one up actually. ❤️😯😂✨ Thank you for this demo ✨ ~

I can't with the Denman. It pulls/tugs at my scalp *so darn much* and I don't have that issue at all with either the Tangle Teezer or the Wet Brush.

Would the D4 be better than the D3 for fine, loosely wavy hair? It has fewer rows by default....or might I still need to remove a row or 2?

Ive been using a wooden Kent brush. My profile pic is last year when i was still using straighteners. I still have damage though and realized its because im tying my hair too tight and getting breakage. Also the Kent brush takes a LOT if my hair in the brush..i need guidance!!

    The curls look the same.
I’ve used both. Hell, I’ve used every and any curly gurl brush. But I will take the Tangle Teaser which detangles AND defines over the Denmen. ALL DAY
