  • I've had a lot of questions over on the Bushcraft Camp Update Series about the Leather Tinder pouch that I have which I keep my fire lighting materials in. So I though I would show you how I make them in a video. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks for watching - Mike.

    It might be worth mentioning that you will need an even number of holes punched around the perimeter, so that the tag ends of your lacings are on the outside edge of your pouch.

      I was just about to ask about the number of holes.

    If you make a disc from cardboard you can then see easily how best to mark the leather, just draw round the disc which can also have the holes for the cord already marked so marking the leather becomes a piece of cake :)

    This is an incredible project, Mike! Thank you. I have two black leather pouches that contained other items ordered from Amazon. They are so useful for spare batteries, BICs, battery charger for my cell, etc. I was going to go out and buy more pouches but now after seeing this video I will make them.

    You could simply have tied a string to your pen, fix the loose end in the middle of the leather and run the pen at a length of 6.5" around and voilá you would've had a perfect circle.
    Other than that a nice tutorial. Thanks for sharing!

    Nice, when I make mine I make two ears at opposite ends to grab to open the pouch, makes it easy to open. Love these.

    Just made one, 15" diameter...you need more than 1 metre of leather chord..had to use string for now as not long enough. Also I bought the cheapest hole puncher..get the next one up. Besides those 2 learning curves its great. Thanks for the video :)

    Have you considered making a template out of cardboard or thick poster board? If you have several templates in different sizes (2-3 of each size as well) you can lay them on the leather and have a better idea of where to cut in order to get the most items from each hide. I use that method when cutting multiple pieces from 4’x8’ sheets of plywood. Great video by the way. Thank you for sharing. I’m just starting out in leather work and that bag is the first thing I’m going to make.

    I love the video, very well explained and a lovely pouch. However...after looking around for leather, deer antlers and tools it ended up cheaper just buying one already made. I guess some people may have access to these things but I don’t.

    At first I thought - what a waste of leather, having so much drawn up in the top gather. However upon reflection, I like that this design avoids digging for contents, and provides a handy "bowl" while the user selects what is needed. Even fire making in my own back yard with a purpose built rocket stove can be a bit....fussy.
    I have an almost identical piece of leather. Should be a good first-time leather project, and a spare boot lace can sub for the lacing I don't have. (For some reason, I've always found leather working to be intimidation - and I can spin, weave, sew, and knit complex clothing of my own designs. Go figure.)
    Thank you for posting.

    if you just mark half the length, cut a bit of string pin 1 end to the cehtre then a pen on other end can just make a curcle

      @Union_Yagow - If he saved him 7 mins on how to make a circle, and you take away the 4 mins he used to explain how to mark your pattern on one side so you don't waste all the material, you would only get a 2 minute video.

    Just a little idea. Start by making a cardboard template using a compass.
    1: it is easier to find the optimal place for you circle.
    2: Its a lot easier to draw the circle on the leather

    you don't want a hole in the middle of the pouch, especially just to mark the line. It's a tinder pouch, holes, even little ones, let in water. there's no point in making a cardboard template if you're only making a couple, and different sizes. I use this method all the time, it's very versatile. Cool pouch! I love the way it stands up like a basket! I'm going to make one for sure.

    Hi Mike. I am familiar with cramp balls (King Alfred Cakes is another name) and their use a fire lighting aid. I once kept a few on a shelf in my garage. After some time they went in to some sort of 'spore' cycle leaving a horrible black/purple dust like substance all around them. They made a lot of mess and it put me off using them. Have you had any issues like that keeping them in the leather pouches?
    Also, would there be any benefit adding metal eyelets where you thread the leather cordage through? Thanks.

    • @blacksmithingone
      @blacksmithingone 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drynet... if you used metal eyelets it would give some strength to the leather but if you were looking for a more original look you would leave them out. just my opinion.

    Seeing this video again i came up with another question !! When you put the leather string in the pouch and switch (in-out-in-out-...), eventually when you reach the final hole you'll have to get both ends at the outer part of the pouch .. but what if your cord ends up inside the bag instead of outside the bag? Do you make an extra hole ?

    • @TAOutdoors
      @TAOutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nathanael, I know what you mean, all you do is punch another whole in between to the two final holes that way both ends of the cord will come out on the outside

    • @nathanaeldesmedt686
      @nathanaeldesmedt686 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fieuw, glad you understood what i was trying to say :p I wasnt sure if bisecting the space in between would effect the strength of the leather or would cause difficulties to close the pouch !! Thnx for the answer :)
