Making a Leather Drawstring Pouch

In this video, Chuck Dorsett makes a leather drawstring pouch. These drawstring pouches are easy projects that don't require a lot of time or experience. The pouches are hand-stitched around the body and then a drawstring is attached at the top for the closure. The ideal leather to use for these pouches is a 3/4 oz. soft leather. We hope you have fun with this simple and easy project!

This is a nice design! My mother would love the pink and purple one. We go to renaissance faires as a family and when we do we carry belt pouches to hold our money instead of using a modern wallet

I'm going to cut up a real leather skirt that I got in the thrift store and make a pouch. I like the double drawstring the best and I would knot each set of the double drawstrings at the ends. Thanks for this video! I bought the tool to make the 4 holes at once and will practice on scraps to get the technique down.
I am just now seriously getting into leather craft. I have made a wallet and bound a few sketch books or journals. I have only one eye and am legally blind in that remaining eye to boot. 😂 your video descriptions are fantastic and camera work has good contrast of the work you are doing most times. awesome as usual Chuck, love to watch you work sir. I actually will be doing a few new pouches for my adult kids for ren faire garb. I had not done one with the flap before, looks very interesting. I encourage using pouches as a "purse" or "back pocket" for holding wallets and the like. I used to do the same for SCA events. I suggest a lacing needle for that second lace tie install, it makes it much easier to find the other side of a filled set of holes.

What i use as great pattern material is plastic floor. you know like the once that look like fake wood floor. It is very good and if not free, very cheap.

if you put a round off a pointed end that is rounded so its not sharp will help so much more with getting them points

Hey Chuck I was wondering if you guys could make a video on how to make a belt with one type of leather as the main body and a different type of leather as the billet and buckle ends. Watch this video on drawstring pouch several. So will be trying my hand at this project. Worried about the stitching since I dont do much of that.

Excellent video Chuck. Those would make nice dice bags. However I have a question that doesn't have anything to do with this video. I recently completed the top half of my armor. Thanks for your very informative tutorials! I’m just learning the craft and of course making mistakes. One of which is when I dyed my project I used a small brush to touch up some small areas. I didn’t notice I used one that previously been used with black. Now I can see the touch up area is a little darker than the rest which is a saddle tan color. Is there anything I can do to fix this or do I have to live with my mistake? A tutorial on fixing any other mistakes would be helpful. Keep up the good work! Thank you!
Thanks for your comment! Made my weekend! I’m sorry to say that it may be there for good, but hopefully, it makes the project look more handmade! The only thing I can offer, and I may not advise this but would do it if it were mine and without seeing it, is to go over it with some black antique. This will bring the rest of the panel down some and may, just may, make it more consistent. It’s not a perfect answer but it is a handmade product and, with a bit of use, will look great!
Maybe just try giving some water stains it might patina right over it

Your suede is chrome tan. Would that damage coins if they were left inside the pouch for long periods?
Hey Chuck, I have an unrelated question. I have been looking to pick up an oblong punch for belt holes in my holsters. I have found several 1 5/8" which is what I want, but they say they are 7/32" wide. That seems to narrow. What do you use ? tired of using hole punches and cutting them out. want better looking hole. Thanks
Thanks for asking! The width is typically set up by the tool makers and we don’t have much say. 7/32 is just about ¼” so that’s a good width for an oblong when it’s on a buckle but that’s pretty thin to run a belt strap through. It will work and will loosen over time, or, you can step the oblong widthwise to open that up a bit. Make small punches left and right and you should get a wider hole that looks even. If you punch too far left or right just punch a round hole in both ends and that will round each end where there may be a small point. See of this helps?
Hey Chuck, quick question. Making a few belts and noticed the leather has some stretch. Is this normal? Never really noticed before. Its a 8-9 oz veg tan leather. Thanks
David! Thanks for asking! It really depends on the tannage. A quality veg-tan, English Bridle or Latigo will have little to no stretch (the lowest weights may have a little) whereas an oily side or a softer veg or chrome may have a lot of stretch. I may suggest strapping from a cut that’s tanned for belts like our “Strap Leather” or one of the above. If you’re making belts you’ll be surprised at the difference in how it cuts, edges, slicks, punches and the overall outcome. See if this helps?

I have a question about the different tanning methods. I am a fur trapper and have been considering getting into leather working. My question is can I tan my own hide to to take a stamp? One of your videos said I need veg tanned leather for stamping. My trapping supply store selling a tanning solutions but not sure if this will work for stamping and carving?
I am sorry to say that I don’t have a good answer for this one. You can vegetable tan hides yourself but I don’t know enough about the veg-tan process and recipe to give you some solid information. It’s a pretty drawn out process which is why a veg is much more expensive than the chrome. There has to be a good book or information somewhere out there and I would love to dive deeper into this one. Good luck with it and please let me know if you have some success here!

this is my first project and i am following along as you go. I get to punching after gluing and after three or four punches i notice that my holes are closing up and cant be seen where i already punched. is there a solution for this?
Hi James,
If you;re referring to the stitching holes - try putting some scrap leather underneath your leather pieces that you're punching. This will ensure the chisels go down through the leather and give you nice, open stitch holes. With suede, it can be a little harder to see the holes but they shouldn't close back up after punching all the way through.

Hi Randy,
It depends a little bit on how large the pieces are but small scraps can be used for earrings, bracelets and cuffs, keyfobs and keyrings, fringe tassels, small pouches, and even wallet exteriors. If the pieces are larger, then they can be used for bags and purses, you can also line them with veg tan for briefcases. Hope that helps!
What does “pull up” mean in regards to leather?
Elizabeth here is our official definition: Pull-Up Leather - The tannery applies a base dye before layering additional dyes and oils to achieve a uniform, darker look. As this leather is handled and the final product undergoes regular use, the character of the base dye is revealed and a well-worn finish emerges.
Chuck I dont hav a stitching pony.. any suggestion what to use in place off.... My knees??? Dont do a lot of stitiching really none first attempt with this project... Have a vise on my Husbands work bench that could work..?

A vice may work, depending on how large the leather piece is you are sewing. It doesn't have the room in the jaws like a pony does. If you do use a vice, just make sure to use scrap leather between the project and the jaws to keep the leather from getting marked. @@WeaverLeatherSupply Hi Chuck Thanks for answering.. did the stitching today on the pouch. Since it was a smalI project pouch I could use my knees as the pony. Or sometimes just put it on the table and worked the needles in that way. It was slow going and if I do more projects with stitching I will definitely buy a pony.. Again thanks Cyndi

Having the top mouth with 4 unattached edges instead of just two bothers me. I like the extra piece at top for reinforcement but see mechanical use problems developing because once turned inside out the top offers open 'slits'. Any problem in design if after complete it to your project we go back and sew each of the two reinforcement pieces to their larger panels at the top?
It would still leave main opening clear.

You can definitely go back and sew the two pieces together, there shouldn't be any issues that I can think of!
