Your videos are an answer to my prayers. I am new to keeping orchids (I used to kill and throw them out 🥺). Then I saw a popular TH-camr and switched to clay pebbles (which stopped my path of misery but didn’t fix my issues completely). Now I found your videos and I have full confidence that this is what I was looking for. Thank you so much for your videos! Please wish me luck 🤗❤️

Hi Emaan- you are an Orchid Whisperer! Would like to know where you purchase your Orchid pots? Have you ever thought of starting a home business selling your Orchid Medium!
Found your channel today and I love your videos on orchids. Very informative! I grow my orchids in sphagnum moss in glass vases/cups. I will try the medium this summer as my orchids are not reblooming for me. I see a lot of roots and leaves around the year but no flowers.

@@aida087 You would have to look at the ingredients in the mix you bought. If it is "Natural blend of western fir bark, perlite and horticultural charcoal" as they claim - you have it almost the same like Emaan's made mix. Just add a little bit of vermiculite (you can buy it in any store selling plants). I do not think that there is any problem in substituting pine bark with western fir bark.
Thank you so much for sharing your orchid medium recipe😊!...I’m so excited to try and make my own medium now - your recipe makes very good sense and it’s a great idea...very smart😊!
Your orchids are very beautiful and look very healthy. Thank you, for sharing the medium you make yourself. Now I can understand why any bark should be boiled , to keep it clean and free from fungus. I already lost one orchid to fungus and I hope I don’t lose any more, like you I purchased the two I have from a box store for $5 each.
Thank you too. You can also bake the bark in the oven. But boiling is easier and also water soaks the bark, so that way the heat can go inside the bark and kill whatever is there. The boiling process is faster, it doesn’t take much time.
+Pochi 555 thank you also for watching my videos and for your comment. I’m glad that my instructions are helping people. And you are always welcome in my channel 🌺
I agree that moss is the worst! And the other is hard to find here. I really enjoyed seeing how you make your medium. Thank you! I’d love to know more about African Violets...
Thank you so much for sharing your information! A few days ago I stumbled upon your videos and started following you. I really love orchids but in some way they don't last very long with me. Now I'm going to tryout the things I learned from watching your videos and hopefully they will last longer and I can enjoy them longer also. Usually I don't leave comments but wanted to share this with you. Thanks!
+Kirsten Broertjes - Schmidt Thank you for watching my videos and for your comment. Why they don’t last long with you? Do you water them too much or you keep them in wrong place? You are always welcome. If you need advice in growing them I can help you. Tell me how you water and where you grow them?
Superb video Emaan and great saving tips! One question I have and haven’t found anywhere yet perhaps you would know. I have three phals in bloom no roots! Now the leaves have been dehydrated for over a month. I cut the spikes and placed them in water, will they survive just like cut roses or flowers put in water? I can’t find the answer anywhere! Hoping they do! They are so beautiful! One has two leaves on their spike and I am thinking they might be keiki to become?! Hoping the plant now will hydrate quickly and start making roots.
+MCA Dialectic, Mrs. Billis thank you very much for watching and for the question. Do you want me to make video for you and show how you can do it. But I don’t have examples for you to show. How I understood you cut the spikes and there are 2 leaves on the flower spike. And you bothered orchids have no roots, right?
Hi Emaan! No video necessary thank you so much. I have three phals in blooms but almost all roots were rotten. I cut them a month and half ago. The leaves have been getting worse: more dehydrated. After further reaearch, I have decided today to cut the spikes of the plant to maximize its rehydration and root growth. I kept the spikes with the beautiful flowers on them and place them in water; have you done this before? Have the flower stayed in bloom long? Or did they die? Julie! ;)
+MCA Dialectic, Mrs. Billis that tree phals you have to put upside down in the cup of water or in a dish where you can fit their leaves. And put just 1 inch of water in that dish. That way you will help those leaves from dehydration. And whenever you see the water becomes dirty ( it has to be absolutely clean all the time, nothing has to swim in the water, change it every single day, put warmer not cold water) you change it. And slowly the roots start growing.never put in the glass with the water with the leaves looking up. You will decay the stem it will get mold and the orchid will die from black rot very fast. Keep the leaves in the dish with the water ( water has to touch only the tips 1 inch, big leaves not small new leaves) and roots up. Those flower spikes you can put in a long vase with the sphagnum moss and apply some keike paste on the nodes. They will grow new keikes later.
I can see they are so happy in your homemade medium..can I use it on oncibium? Please show how to grow oncibium too..thank you so much from down under 🇦🇺 💐
Hello again Emaan. I have also followed your recipes for the orchid medium & the fertilizer/watering recipe. I feel confident that growing orchids following the way you do it will give me beautiful outcomes also. I would like to know: do you use tap water in your fertilizer or. at any time that you water them, or is it distilled, purified, etc. Thanks so much for your videos and your response. I love them.
+EcstaticOrange Hello. I use rain water, because I have it always. You can use tap water but take it one day before using. I fertilize every time when I water which is ones in two weeks. You are welcome. Feel free if you have more questions.
Hello Emman, where can I get the charcoal? Can I use charcoal briquettes that we use for cooking outside? The kind without the lighter fluid added to it? I have no place to make charcoal. Thank you dear one. Love from Texas ❤️🇨🇱🌱🌺
+Carol Hucklebridge Hello! When I was in Florida I saw in the stores wood charcoal for plants. They sell it in a bags . If you can not find from the stores you can put some branches of trees in your grill or fireplace or on the ground and burn them. Before they get burnt completely you put some water on the burning wood. Otherwise it will become ash.
You can order online, try amazon. It’s called horticultural charcoal. You might find it at a garden shop or nursery. There is also an online shop called repotme.com
Can I use this medium for other plants, such as philodendron, snake plants, adeniums, plumerias, etc Reason I ask is you stated charcoal can kill azalea I believe? Also, I cannot seem to find pine bark, it’s always a “blend” with smaller pieces. Can I use cedar chips, without chemicals…clean? TY for your help!
Oh my dear Emaan, I wish I lived near you! I cannot make wood charcoal in my neighborhood. HOA is tough ☹️. I want to do the exact same as you with medium, fertilizer and rain (fortunately, I don’t have as many orchids as you). I’m very curious how firmly you push the medium into the pot with the orchid? I may be pushing it in too hard, but I think air pockets are not good, right? Also, you said when you buy a new orchid, wait to repot, but how long do I wait after they come into my house to repot and fertilize? You are so wonderful. I love your channel! You are so good at explaining the details of your methods. I hate that some are so critical. Pay no attention to them - there are many of us that love your informative videos AND, your orchids beauty and fast growth is proof you’ve got the right method for your orchids! I look forward to your guidance on the 2 new orchids I bought at Lidl yesterday on when I should repot and fertilize them. 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Hi, don’t pack medium very tight, tap the pot on sides and bottom. If you need to repot wait one month. If medium is broken down or if there’s a lot of root rot, repot in two weeks.
Another excellent, instructive video! Thank you! I’ll try your mix if I can find pine bark in California...but all orchid growers occasionally repot with fresh medium, if they see the bark rotting or breaking down. The pine bark never breaks down for you? Orchid bark from Lowe’s does...but maybe it is fir bark, why do you use both perlite and vermiculite?
Pat Gentry thank you for asking. Everything organic by the time breaks down. I planted those mini orchids in that medium last year and still the bark is hard, it didn’t break down yet. I use perlite because it keeps the roots warm, the vermiculite keeps water inside it and when needed it gives to the plant. They both are good for the drainage
Very informative and interesting video but doesn't vermiculite have asbestos which is a harmful substance. Do you use sphagnum miss for other plants too. Please guide. Thanks in advance.
Emaan, you mentioned that you water every two weeks. I usually let soak overnight then drain in morning. Is this what you do? I will make your medium because mine are in potting soil and not doing well, obviously! Thank you for the info. OK
+Rose Sires yes I water every two weeks, because I live in a very humid environment. It doesn’t mean that everyone has to water every two weeks. You have to water according to your medium and orchid roots. If you see that roots become silver color it is time to water. Usually after watering the roots become green. When they want to drink they become silvey. I soak my orchids for an hour or sometimes they stay for 2 hours. In than time the medium soaks enough. I never leave them soak overnight. Thank you too!
I am overwatering and have them in the wrong medium. I have a chocolate orchid and a pansy orchid, two special plants. As soon as this white stuff goes away I’ll go to town and get the right stuff for them. Thank you so much for your quick reply. So glad I found you!
I just had a thought. To make wood ash, can you use any kind of wood? I have lots of alder and hemlock trees and with the last wind storm several branches came down of which I could use.
+josie ercia Perlite is available in Lowe’s, Menards, Home depot. Vermiculite the big ones I foud from Menards. NZ sphagnum moss and Cal Mag I bought online from Amazon. Good sphagnum moss you can find from Lowe’s too.
Thank you for the information about orchid medium . I have lost two dendrobium orchids. Please tell me how to water , fertilize, fungicide to dendrobium . Thanks.
+Sumita Biswas you’re welcome. I lost half of my huge hoya plant, because of fungus. I will show you when I again treat it with the fungicide. Or can go to my video “ how to treat sick oleander “. There I showed how to fight against the fungus
Hi Emaan from sub tropical Queensland Australia. Thanks for all this information and in real time. I was given a white phalaenopsis recently. Its in a small ceramic pot but the actual plant is wrapped in celophane. Should I take this away from the plant especially the base please? Also when should I repot it as it's in flower. Much appreciated👏💖
+Ruby Keiss Hi! Now it is good time to replant orchids. Any time you can take your orchid from its liner pot and replant. You have to choose a pot according to its roots. Don’t choose very big pot( roots can rot) . When orchids are in bloom it is safe to replant them. Replanting doesn’t effect to their flowers. I do it all the time. In this video I showed my home made medium if you wanna watch. th-cam.com/video/D-X1BPvwL9A/w-d-xo.html
love your channel, extremely well presented and informative. As far as disinfecting sphagnum and mulch or anything else is concerned, I suggest that boiling is not good enough. First of all, you need a larger pot for boiling. Secondly and most importantly purchase a HUGE PYREX bowl, (must be microwaveable PYREX, all new Pyrex glass is microwaveable) and place your medium in the water in the PYREX bowl and microwave at FULL POWER for at least 10 or 12 minutes. Be careful about buying older Pyrex glass in second-hand stores; most of that older Pyrex glass is NOT microwaveable. Don't be penny wise pound foolish. Buy NEW PYREX. Do NOT place your bark or sphagnum in the microwave dry, it must be in the water. Microwaving will definitely kill off any bad microbial growth/spores. It will also be far more effective in killing off any insect eggs or larvae. That is probably why you had a problem with Mealy Bugs even though you boiled your sphagnum. I also suggest inexpensive aquarium charcoal from a good mfg. such as MarineLand. IMO there is no need to pay a premium for so-called gardening grade charcoal and similarly branded products.
+larry chan Thank you very much for your great information. I really appreciate that. It can help who need this information also. I understood my mistake with Mealy Bugs. It is not only because of sphagnum moss. I didn’t know that they can be in flowers and under the old dry leaves. Disinfecting the medium is not enough in fighting with them. It is needed a complex fight with them. Now I know what I had to do. But it is late. But I wanna make a video where I will explain everything about those bugs. 😏
Hi Emma, I changed my orchids medium 4 days ago and today. I looked at the 2 I did and I saw that the were getting mold all over , please help me ,what should I do ??
I live in the Tropics and have been trying to grow the miniature phals but they keep dying on me. I use small clay pots as this climate is always hot I thought the clay pots would keep them cool. But it seems that the medium (a mix of hydro pellets and spagnum moss) still doesn't agree with them, although the normal size phals love it, so is there any substitute for the pine bark? as that may not be available in this climate? It's more or less like Florida's climate.
Emaan, in one video you put some paste on the flower stem but unfortunately I could not hear what you called it. Could you please let me know what it was?
nice video but i don´t agree with you, because in my opinion there is to much fine medium which keeps the roots much to long wet. If this medium get´s a few month old it never drys out quick which is extreme important that the roots do not rott. And what do you have for drainage that water can run out of the pot after watering ?. A quick wet and dry cycle is the most important thing for the most orchids ! All in all if it works for you it´s ok. We will see in future. Cheers from Jochen Stuttgart Germany
Thank you! That fine medium ( if you mean vermiculite and perlite) they dont make soil wet. They keep moisture in them , when it needed they give that moisture to the plant. Even if you mix them both together and touch with your hands you don’t feel its wet, they keep moisture inside. I always use for my plants. In this medium I keep these orchids since last year and never changed the soil yet. And you see how the roots are healthy and not decaying at all. Everyone has his own opinion. I respect your opinion, but tried to explain you little bit. Choice is by you...
Hi Emaan, I really am enjoying your videos! I am a novice orchid grower and mine have been doing well until recently when I found white fungus on one. I let it dry out more and used cinnamon as a fungicide, will charcoal help too or what else do you recommend?
Thank you so much for your video. All your orchids look beautiful and healthy. I wish I would have found your videos before... I lost 6 orchids from stem and root rot. ( I was told to water few times a week with all kind of fertilizer, use distilled water, etc ) I live in Quebec, Canada and here the winter is very long and very very cold. So because the heating system works all the time,, I even bought a humidifier but it was already too late for my orchids,. I will for sure make your mix for the 7 orchids I have left (but not healty). May I ask you if the clear pots you use are plastic pots (I use those) and, if so, do you make holes just on the bottom or also on the side ? And like another of your subscriber wrote I would love to see how you repot your orchids. Thank you again.
Hi, I was born in Quebec, as well, but live in Houston Texas. As for the clear plastic pots, she makes holes, sides and bottom . If I need to make holes I use a glue gun.Fertilizer only twice a month, especially in Canada.Keep warm…
Oh WOW +Emaan's Garden , I noticed your clear pots don't have holes on the sides and your Orchids are doing SO well, do they have drainage holes at the bottom?
+Aida F. I tried to grow them ( mini ones) in the pots with a holes on the sides, but they didn’t do well. Then I planted them in those cups with the drainage holes in the bottom
Any medium should be in accordance with your own climate. This might work with low-humidity areas but might kill your orchids when you grow them in somewhere with relatively high humidity. Also, complex hybrid Phals are quite adaptive and also easy to grow, which means that they don’t really care what medium they are doing with. Some drainage is enough.
Hello Emaan! Why again do you boil the bark? If mine is frozen does that kill the bugs and fungus or should I still boil it? Also, I have three orchids which have progress to yellow/black spot on leaves. It is progressing and many options are out there. Which is yours? I think its Fungus infection. Yellow dots on leaves. Have you had that? How did you treat? I was told today that I need to repot all my plants!!!
+MCA Dialectic, Mrs. Billis Hello! I boil the bark only one time before making the medium. If your bark iz frozen it doesn’t mean that the insects and fungus is dead. Because the bark is in the bag, the eggs of insects can be deep inside the bark... When we boil the bark soaks and the heat reaches deep inside the bark and kills whatever is there.
+MCA Dialectic, Mrs. Billis if you have fungus in your orchids I know how to treat them. I treat all my plants that way. I had fungus in my hoyas . Now it stoped. I showed in one of my videos how to treat fungus. That is very effective treatment. I am leaving the link to that video. Please watch and learn. Hope it will help you also as it helped me.

Hi there i am a big fan...Do you have Dendrobium Phalenopsis....any advice would be great...Thank you for your excellent advice and videos.
Amazing information , very clear video very informative. Thanks so much. 🙏🏼🐞🌺🥀🌹❤️
@@EmaansGarden Hi, I have a concern about the medium staying wet, in the plastic bag. It doesn’t mold ? TIA
I follow your instructions and the results are amazing. Your orchids are healthiest I have seen. Thank you very much for your advise.

Thanks!

How did you dry the mulch after boiling??
Please do you use water culture and how , what do you prefer and why ? Thank you 😊
can you microwave the pine bark mulch instead of boiling them in a pot to kill the insect eggs?
I boil or put in the oven, if it’s work using microwave, it may work, i have never tried it. It is kind a good idea.
Very useful tips for new beginners.
I found vermiculite and perlite ...larger pieces on line. I would not have thought of using pine bark....thank you .

+Emaan's Garden sorry I meant your both orchids have no roots
Emaan's Garden thank you!
I can see they are so happy in your homemade medium..can I use it on oncibium?

How can you grow a orchid with no roots but has nice leaves
Can I use this medium for other plants, such as philodendron, snake plants, adeniums, plumerias, etc
Reason I ask is you stated charcoal can kill azalea I believe?
Also, I cannot seem to find pine bark, it’s always a “blend” with smaller pieces. Can I use cedar chips, without chemicals…clean?
TY for your help!
This is my problem with these videos, someone asking a important question never gets answers but, someone giving compliments always gets a response.

Smoke some meat using chunks of woods, you will get a charcoal that way easily. Your HOA have nothing to say if you are cooking food using a smoker.

Hi, don’t pack medium very tight, tap the pot on sides and bottom. If you need to repot wait one month. If medium is broken down or if there’s a lot of root rot, repot in two weeks.
Great video! Can u tell me. How soon after repotting do you feed the orchids
Excellent video. Cheers. How often do you repot with this medium.
Emaan, do you place spag moss toward the center of your orchids when you pot them, or just use this orchid mix as it is?
What if there's no charcoal is it still good for the orchids?.
+Socorro Carcasona yes, sometimes when I don’t have a charcoal I plant my orchids without it too. But with charcoal is the best.
Socorro Carcasona puedes usar el de las peceras
I would like to know if it’s important what kind of wood we can use to make charcoal?
Very informative and interesting video but doesn't vermiculite have asbestos which is a harmful substance. Do you use sphagnum miss for other plants too. Please guide. Thanks in advance.
Thank you so much, your video is the best.
Thank you
Hi, thank you for this. Do you wash your charcoal also?

+Ruby Keiss You are always welcome!
@@EmaansGarden Thanks so much for taking the time to explain the process. 💖💖💖
Thanks to share your knowledge with us.
love your channel, extremely well presented and informative.
Can you show Hoyas, I don’t know what they are.

Thank you for sharing I enjoy the way you explain in detail I love orchids and trying a few so thanks for sharing God bless your hands. YVONNE.
Her Orchid and how healthy they are is proof that what Emaan is doing is perfect.
Hi Emaan, I really am enjoying your videos! I am a novice orchid grower and mine have been doing well until recently when I found white fungus on one. I let it dry out more and used cinnamon as a fungicide, will charcoal help too or what else do you recommend?
sounds ideal for my orchards hood balance love to learn

Thank you so much Ireland
@@EmaansGarden Aah thank you so much, I feel the holes on the sides make the medium dry out faster, thank you again.😊
@@EmaansGarden Hi, is this true only for the mini pots ? I saw you replying to other viewers that pots have holes on sides, I am 😕 confused .
+Xuan He Hi, thank you for watching and for comment. I live in a very high humid climate. And with this medium I didn’t have any problems yet😊🌺
