    Are you fearful you won’t reach your art goals on your own? Many self-taught artists, myself included, live with these doubts, worried they'll never be considered a “real artist” without an art degree. I’ll be plein air oil painting at the beach this week and sharing how I’m evolving my skills as a self taught artist. I believe art talent relies on practice and dedication more than anything else. It’s incredibly possible for self-taught artists to be successful! We have to learn to prioritize our art and set milestones on our own to see growth. I’ve been placing more importance on painting from life and landscape paintings. They have an amazing ability to tend towards abstraction and impressionism which has helped me improve my simplification and color matching painting skills.
    I hope you enjoy this longer vlog! I kept a lot more painting sections and clips of the beautiful beach/ocean scenery. Let me know which painting of the three I made is your favorite and why!

    I HAVE an art degree, I went to school and everything, but I’m not an active artist nor did I learn how to make my place in the art world or even how to make art from my degree so I also consider myself to be self taught. You really don’t need a degree to be good at your job or your craft.

    • @AshleighKing
      @AshleighKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      That’s well said! At some point every artist must dedicate time to improving their skills on their own even after they get an art degree. Thanks for your perspective!

    • @Moood007
      @Moood007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Exactly! If you don’t actually put in the time and work even with 100 degrees you won’t make your place in the art world, it’s all about building up your art and practicing consistently, but it’s totally possible to make your mark it’s just a question of time.

      That is so true. A bachelors in art means nothing unless you have a MFA and want to teach. I also have an art degree and self taught.

      Start making art just for you, enjoy learning and developing your techniques or master just one, practice, the whole secret is in practice, after that your path will be clearer to trace.

    I can confidently say that I learned more from TH-cam and taking a few courses with professionals, than I did in University. I had a degree in FA, but knew nothing about painting, how to use mediums properly let alone how to approach galleries or get into shows. The institution I went to was all about concept and the big 'idea.' I was at a large art show in Toronto earlier in the year and the number of self-taught artists blew my mind with their work. You paint better than I do, by the way. Never give up. Do you like Mitchell Albala - sorry if I mispelled that, but your style reminds me of his! All the best :]

    You definitely don’t need to go to art school to become a talented artist. So much of what is important at art school is seeing what fellow artists are doing and broadening your ideas. Also it is daily practice of the craft. So much of the technical stuff can be learned from you tube videos made by skilled painters and you should be in and out of galleries and museums gaining inspiration. As for the rest it is 10% talent and 90% hard work and dedication….. and always in pursuit of beauty…..

    Your videos really inspire me! The quality of the shooting, transitions, poems - everything is done with quality and taste. I draw mostly in electronic drawing, but I like to observe traditional drawing.
    Also, I'm interested to know what it's like to be an artist in a place other than where I live. In my space, the profession of an artist is not the most prosperous occupation. But looking at these videos, I believe in myself more.
    Thank you for being here.

    • @AshleighKing
      @AshleighKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s so kind! Thank you so much 😊 being an artist definitely has a negative stigma in more places/cultures than others. In my experience it’s more accepted in American culture. For my Asian culture upbringing its not as acceptable, but in the end it’s most important to believe in yourself and focus on improving yourself 😊 wishing you the best!

    I love how you seamlessly cut from your painting to the environment. I don’t know exactly how to word it, but I think that it works so well because of your style of painting, because you aren’t painting it in a photorealistic kind of way, but you are painting it in a way where you are capturing the vibe or the aura or the feel of the environment in your painting. So when you add the music and give those establishing shots, and then I’m looking at your painting, your painting kind of looks like how it feels to see the marshland.
    I hope that makes sense. I really like it Ashleigh, it’s like you can capture how a place makes you feel in your painting.

    Beautiful video Ashleigh. The reason I watch your channel is because of the honest way in which you describe your development.
    Great to see young painters struggle and battle artistic problems until they break through.
    It is amazing how one successful piece and all the problems you solve in the process, stay with you for life.
    I can look back at a painting I did 10 years ago and instantly pick out the exact things I learned making it.
    Keep it going Ashleigh, the reason no one thinks they can create original work is because they give up after a year or two. Originality is inevitable if one persists for decades - you will see!
    Very soon you will get tired of photo reference and desire to take your paintings to a higher level = that is combining live nature and your imagination. This will happen naturally when you don’t have to concentrate so hard on values, drawing etc.
    Once again I appreciate your honest approach. 🧠😉👌🏽

    Like lots of others, I too got an art centered degree, so I had to take a lot of art classes as pre reqs, (for interior design) but it didn’t really teach me a ton about art, but it definetly pushed me to create more and try lots of new mediums because I had firm deadlines. Having time based practice is really essential I think. It’s the age old question of “is the painting/drawing really ever done? At some point, you have to call it and start something new or you never really learn when you just futz around with the same piece forever. Ya gotta move on and try new things and make more things. You can always go back later to something, but knowing when it’s time to stop and start something new is really important and sooo hard for me sometimes.
    Anyways this was a lovely video and so soothing to watch!! Thank you!!!

    Ashley all three paintings are impressive. Definitely, you are a brave woman to go out an paint in plen air. I have thought about it but I haven’t done it yet. Each video is a great improvement and anytime you want to compare your work or yourself just compare it within yourself. How are you doing today compare to where we’re you a year ago will give you much satisfaction. You are unique and no one else will do what you do at the level of commitment you put in each video. Each day is a new day and you have successfully accomplished more by practicing, experimenting and giving your art the time it deserves. It is different for each individual. Just keep going and keep painting. Your future is bright and it has much more surprises for you. Thanks for each inspirational, calming and promising video. Hi Ashleigh! I graduated from a high school about art this year and waiting for art colleges' exams. One thing I can guarentee is that you can be a great master without a degree too. Honestly, my school was in a little town and wasn't very developed so I didn't learn much from the school. All I did was to work, research, study on these and repeat. I hope to improve even more by the years pass. I want to say, we can do this! Human being is a weird creation tbh lol. We can get everything we want once we believe and work, that's how I believe and experience. And since I started my YT channel too, I'm learning so much from you about videos, camera angles etc. So thank you and always stay safe!

    To me, art school is being so useful! we have a subject called Fundamentals of visual language, and this in specific is helping me so so much to learn how to comunicate my ideas through art. I believe anyone can be an artist, with or without an degree, but I think sometimes an art school can be a great experience in life for some people❤🥰
    by the way, I'm studying Art Education🧡

    ❤️😭❤️😭❤️ You really delivered on content in this one! Three paintings presented in a half hour- nice work! I haven't decided which of the three is my favorite. They all have features that I loved 🤔☺. Can I say that I like them all equally? I was a little concerned that 30 minutes might be too long to hold attention, but you did a great job (as usual) of keeping me engaged. In fact, I was not even aware of how much time had passed when the last musical accompaniment began. It was a beautiful piece, but made me a little sad because it had the feel of closure and saying "good-bye for now." It made for a bitter-sweet ending. I will definitely have to watch this one through again, and will be looking forward to what your creative genius serves up next ❤❤

    I don't consider myself an artist either ...didn't go to school for Art, but for Art Education...I taught "Art" to others. So basically an Education background from K-12 & Adult. What I do have is an expansive 60yr. knowledge of different mediums , tools, what supplies to use for whatever venue of expression, whether it be ceramics, wood, printmaking, weaving, fine art , graphic art, photography, etc. I also Sew & Tailor and have been doing that since age10....Where I am "self taught" is the digital world of the "Arts"... There is no such thing as a "real artist"..it is ALL practice, practice, practice...trial & error, & self study what interests you..Best thing people can do is learn Art History..You my dear are definitely on the right track!

    Beautiful work. The paintings, AND the video itself. The scenery, the music, even the bit of poetry at the beginning, brilliantly put together! Plus, you get extra points for using the phrases "Secluded Beach," "Deserted Island," and "Abandoned Research Facility" all together without being a Sci-Fi Channel movie!
    Seriously though, I'm an acryllic man myself, but their relatively quick drying time has always made outdoor painting problematic (at least for me). Do you find oil paints lend themselves better to plein air painting? Excellent Video As Always.👏👏👏👏

    • @AshleighKing
      @AshleighKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! I really appreciate your encouraging comments! Haha I love a good sci-fi movie so that might’ve been an influence 😅
      Yeah the quick drying time is why I tend to stay away from acrylics. Oils are definitely better suited to plein air painting! Definitely try it out if you can 😊
