Red Arrows Mach Loop 2015

  • Here's a video from a trip to the hills in June 2015 to see the Red Arrows on their annual joyride through the Mach Loop. When the team overnight at RAF Valley, there's a good chance of seeing them transit the Mach Loop on the way back to their home base at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. The pilots will have flown "The Loop" many times while training at low level in Wales, and this is the oportunity to get their photograph taken in the red Hawk jet. It's also a great opprortunity for the "Blues" to have a ride in the back, with many taking the opportunity to film their trip themselves.

    i Was lucky enough to get a back seat in hawk back in the 80`s,its a beauty of an a\c like a sportscar of the skies....you see the back seaters,they are the a\c ground crews,they are regularly given a flight as a thankyou for their hardwork to each of the Red Arrows a\c and pilot they maintain.

    Of all the aircraft that go through the loop the Hawk drivers are easily the sportiest. F 15s and Tornadoes exude power, but you need a Hawk driver for a bit of a show. Lovely touch at 3:55 to put on the smoke, and again at 4:35 with smoke and a little bit of a display for the photographers. Those pilots are gentlemen every one of them, and I include in that comment the ladies who have flown or are flying with the Reds.

    I remember that day....they always put on a show for the photographers...great pilots,they always do that bit more for us.....the rear seaters that day were that aircrafts maintenance crews,they are often given a day out in back seat....I flew back seta in 1980`s,in a 213 sqd hawk...from St Athan to valley,then via snowden back to St Athans....will never forget it...sea level at 600mph awesome doesnt do it...

      That is not true, that is not true at all. Many, including the RAF have an altitude limit of 250ft. And in some areas of the UK that are specifically for military 'war games' they are allowed to fly down to 100ft.

    • @simonmoses4023
      @simonmoses4023 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nvstewart there are other air forces that fly low, but the RAF are well known for their low -level flying skills.

    • @nvstewart

      @@simonmoses4023 Yes, I am not to far from RAF Valley so get to see it all the time and are into aircraft and have heard about that a lot, but you stated that the 'RAF fly so much lower than other air force", again, not true. Being known for low level skills is different to flying lower than other countries.
      There are videos out there of French pilots flying 15-25 ft off the ground for a prolonged period of time in their fighters in a theater of war, the same as the Panavia Tornados in Desert Storm.
      And Videos of other airforces flying low through canyons and mountains at low level too. Yes, pilots from other countries come to the RAF to get taught how to fly low level on a professional level, and perhaps to learn new techniques their airforce does not teach. Going as low as you can is more about bottle and guts rather than skill.
      War has no altitude restrictions, so perhaps low flying skills of the RAF became famous for their low flying skills in WW2, perhaps they were the first to see the advantages of it and so were the first to demonstrate it in a war setting before anybody else thought of it. That is a possibility.

      @@nvstewart During the 1st gulf war the RAF were given the task of knocking out strategic targets (radar installations etc) which are the hardest targets to take out. They were given this task due to their pochant for low-level flying and their reputation for such missions. This was the case, and still is due to the fact that they fly consistently lower than most other air forces around the world. Yes, you get other air forces flying low, but not as consistently as the RAF. Its a well known speciality of the RAF.

      @@nvstewart fun fact the RAAF (Aussie) have a lower approval at night for certain types. Reason being, NGVs make it easier to see power lines than during the day!

    I was in the parking lot at RIC waiting for the shuttle bus to the terminal. Got talking to a 737 pilot who was ex USAF. F15's I think. I'm a Brit and he was telling me about the joint exercises the USAF and the RAF do. This conversation was in cira. 2006. I remember him telling me that he and his buddies thought they were the dogs bollocks flying at 100'. Then they looked down and saw the RAF in their Tornados flying at 50'. Anyway, love the Yanks. Brothers in arms.
