Yep, thats what my engine sounded like. Thank you. I just changed the bearings, and they didn't look real bad. But evidently they were. If they were the original ones, they should be wore out - it's a 80s model yanmar diesel sailboat motor - with no tellin the hours on it. That is definately what it sounded like, with a deisel twist. So that must have been the problem.
@@emmanuelhud1 Yeah, Im fixin to go rent a torque wrench to finish the job. It was easy. But my piston rod bearings didn't appear to be in bad shape at all? But that was definately the sound it made when I revved it up. And its a old motor, so it was likely the problem. Do you know if it could be a main bearing? I have the main bearing replacements too. But everything feels good and tight, I don't feel any slack and the compression feels real strong. Im wondering should I change them?, And how hard would it be. 1 is a 2 piece insert, the other 2 are 1 soilid circular piece.
@@aaronwalker8847 I from person experience with yanmar egines its your crank shaft(conrod) bearing like what you said you've replaced. I know case bearings can go, but I person don't think the noise is that. If the case bearings have no play and spin smoothly I personally would leave them. The tolerance on the conrod bearings are like 100ths of a millimetre so don't be surprised if it fixed the noise. I have done two yanmars which fixed this problem. I love yanmar engines and I'm always on the look out for a cheap one to fix. So just try that before you go wasting unnecessary money. That's what I would do. 🤷♂️ What yanmar do you have?

Hi Wonder if you can help I get a ticking/knock from my bmw e60d after 15 minutes after I start the car I have had the injectors taken out and checked and tested came back fine. Any help would be great
Edge v6 has an internal water pump that fails easily. All edges will, be in a landfill by design. You have to open motor to change and if you don't do fluids every 7k or less.. you will get milk at 120-180k.
That hole in the bottom half rod bearing not supposed to be there . No oil hole that way therefore it is easier to be spunned if oil seeps behind the bearing half
Sup guys, I want to find out. I've got a mk7 GTi. On idle there is no knock noise. When you hold the rev there is a ticking noise. Apparently it's cylinder one. The guy unplugged cylinder one coil pack while idling and held the accelerator pedal about 2k revs there is no noise. Does a bearing knock need detonation cause doesn't the crank still rotate without detonation??
I have 2005 volvo v50 t5, and I am not sure if a weird noise that came up from a coolant that popped could have caused a rod condition. The car was driving fine, then the hose popped, I had no clue. Vehicle was showing low oil, which I had just did an oil change. The car did not overheat, but it went into limp mode. I got the car to a parts store. the coolant hose was fixed, and resivour topped off. I still could not start the car til I cleared the codes. Codes were knock sensor, and crank position sensor. Once I cleared those, the started, and sounded just fine. I think the rattle noise was from the lifters. the car has 193k miles. I do not understand why a rattle noise happens when the car is in limp mode. I am thinking because the engine is given lesser fuel which makes it run weaker. but that is a theory.
I have some sort of rod knock... it doesn’t sound as bad as that but... when I first start my car, it’s there not really loud but still there... and when it is warmed up and has been running for a bit it basically goes away
Might be your tappets / valve lifters need adjusting, or you have low oil. It goes away because the oil has circulated and lubricated the parts. If it goes away when warm then it's definitely not the same thing as rod knock
If it goes away it’s not a rod knock. Your most likely running low on oil or need an oil change . Some light ticking is normal . Rod knocks get worst when you accelerate
Piston slap or tappets/ followers/ valve springs if a higher lighter tick. If it almost goes away, piston slap, if it goes or is intermittent hydraulic lifter.
My 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS had this but not as bad.. it may have been just a lifter.. i retimed it because i know the sleeves in the valve rod guides are steel and the valve rods are steel alloy.. theyll straighten out.. ill replace the head 40k miles later

What if you hear one bang under your car 1 time in a little ? No bumps in road or anything , air struts , Hurd a loud bang under don’t know if it was my block or crankshaft
Could this sound get much quieter (in fact almost gone) when as the engine warms up? I hear this clicking (not that loud as yours) when driving and accelerating only, but it is gone after a few minutes. Could it be piston slapping? Is it normal? Toyota Yaris, thanks
I’ve got the same issue in my 2002 Subaru Outback. From what I can gather, rod bearings wear over time and on a cold morning when all the moving components of your engine haven’t heated up to the proper size, there’s larger gaps which can cause some tapping/knocking. As long as it’s not super noisy like in this video and it goes away as your engine gets up to temp, you should be fine. Just keep up on maintenance!

How did you know it's rod knock? Have you found loosing bearing caps for sure? Could it be piston slap?
I had the same sound in my GMC truck and it wasn't a rod knock. It was the oil pressure pump that was clogged. Oil starvation will differently give off this type of sound
Can an engine with fine metal in the oil be rebuilt or no. Problem is a spun out rod bearing. Haven’t drove it even a mile while it was messed up.
So should I drive my my car lighter got an xc60 t6 occasionally drive it hard not frequent but I hard a slight click at 6200rpm that happened only twice and I couldn’t get it to replicate on acceleration later when it happened the car hesitated it was also very quiet aswell not loud.
I had a yanmar L100 engine and the bottom end bearing went. esay fix
What yanmar do you have?
@@emmanuelhud1 Thank you so very much, I was worried about that. I doubt if this engine has been rebuilt more than once. If at all.
Its a old 80s model 2gm. The regular 2 gm 13horse it says on the motor or maybe that is 18horse. But Its not the 2gm20 - its the older 2 gm.
@@emmanuelhud1 Yeah, you contacte me just at the right time too. I sure do appreciate that. I was putting it back together today and getting the engine mount support finished up. It was all rotten. So the motor mounts will be much more solid now too/ so itll be right when I put it back in. Its a pain in the butt to take it out and put it back in. .its a tight crawl space it goes in.
What if you hear some sound only while revving ??
Hi Wonder if you can help I get a ticking/knock from my bmw e60d after 15 minutes after I start the car I have had the injectors taken out and checked and tested came back fine. Any help would be great
I thought the rod bearings were accessible right from the oil pan?
The edge on cold start up sound bit similarly but I know I don't have this specific problem on my wife's 07 edge sel awd 3.5L V6 suv
Edge v6 has an internal water pump that fails easily. All edges will, be in a landfill by design. You have to open motor to change and if you don't do fluids every 7k or less.. you will get milk at 120-180k.
Thanks for this video - good audio in what to listen for
Ivan your accent is sick
Good drinking game: Every time he is saying guys take a sip
Hello fellow car trouble haver
You explained exactly what I have car wants to die smoke coming out heavy because the oil mixing where it should not be across the loud noise oh boy
That hole in the bottom half rod bearing not supposed to be there . No oil hole that way therefore it is easier to be spunned if oil seeps behind the bearing half
Wrong bearing type fitted ?
Put your seatbelt on! 🙉 can’t hear anything over that lol
Noise: 4:00 - 4:30
Sounds like your English has a rod bearing knock sound too... :D
J/K, English is also my second language and have a strong spanish/german accent ;)
😆🤣😂 I was thinking the same
I also thought the same haha.
All of you mentioning how often he says 'guys' it's in the name of the channel sooo....🤪👍
I am thinking because the engine is given lesser fuel which makes it run weaker. but that is a theory.
i did an oil change on a friends car and i had a feeling he had something really bad going on and this is the sound i heard...
Have u got a vid how to replace that?
Literally 5 seconds after you said “stop your car immediately if you head this noise cause it can seize any minute, my rod blew out, engine is gone.
Thought i had rod knock , but its just exhuast manifold leak 🤙🏽😂
I have some sort of rod knock... it doesn’t sound as bad as that but... when I first start my car, it’s there not really loud but still there... and when it is warmed up and has been running for a bit it basically goes away
Might be your tappets / valve lifters need adjusting, or you have low oil. It goes away because the oil has circulated and lubricated the parts. If it goes away when warm then it's definitely not the same thing as rod knock
My car has the same problem I’ll hear a knock at idle but goes away while I’m driving.
If it goes away it’s not a rod knock. Your most likely running low on oil or need an oil change . Some light ticking is normal . Rod knocks get worst when you accelerate
low oil will cause your rod knock it need to burn oil treatment for pistons after every oil change
Piston slap or tappets/ followers/ valve springs if a higher lighter tick. If it almost goes away, piston slap, if it goes or is intermittent hydraulic lifter.
50.... 60 weight racing oil and a bottle of STP OIL TREATMENT... a DIESEL emblem off a DIESEL car and a FOR SALE sign in the window
Don't forget 🪚 dust
To cover the noise ?
My 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS had this but not as bad.. it may have been just a lifter.. i retimed it because i know the sleeves in the valve rod guides are steel and the valve rods are steel alloy.. theyll straighten out.. ill replace the head 40k miles later
how much does this cost to do? My 75k mileage GTI has the same noise. I had synthetic oil changes done every 5k miles....
Pretty much rebuilding the engine
My TDI sounds like that on startup but once I put it in gear or increase the rpm's to 1000 it goes away. Should I be concerned?
Exhaust leak
Stop saying GUYS
Stop saying GUYS
People on TH-cam must stop saying GUYS
Other than that, good video.
Well guys, I suppose I don’t have a rod knock guys, that’s god guys! I’m a happy guy. Gotta go guys
I have a question. I have a 2018 Q50 3.0. I believe I have rod knock. Do you think it can be fixed? I cannot afford a new engine and I’m flagged by the dealers
I’m in the same situation bud
@@doylemartin3510 took my car to a dealer and sure enough my oil was sludgy and led to rod knock. To expensive to fix but warranty covered an engine replacement. I got saved, good luck.
Flagged?
Shiaaaaaaat! Alot of work on the way.
Shadap your face
My car don't do it at idle only around 2500 to 3500 rpm can it be timing chain tensioner? 11 nissan verse
Mine was like that till I drove it on the highway and sent it now it knocks at idle and sounds crunchy 😭
I just changed my oil and my car is still making that noise and low oil pressure light keeps coming back on. Help !
he sounds like he is underwater blowing bubbles when he talks
My 2004 Odyssey has had this sound for 100K miles. It started at 75K. It hasn't gotten worse. So what's up?
mine does the same thing. 2006. its been like that for ages
It'll be piston slap or valve noise most likely. Rod knock would have blown the engine by now 🤣
How is it going? Still going or van died?
@@kensimon4478 Runs great. In fact, I've encountered other Honda vans with the same knocking sound.
we are 20 years professional engine parts OEM manufacturer. Our quality is high and stable.
What if you hear one bang under your car 1 time in a little ? No bumps in road or anything , air struts , Hurd a loud bang under don’t know if it was my block or crankshaft
Also happened when I started breaking after pushing the gas heavy
Could this sound get much quieter (in fact almost gone) when as the engine warms up? I hear this clicking (not that loud as yours) when driving and accelerating only, but it is gone after a few minutes. Could it be piston slapping? Is it normal? Toyota Yaris, thanks
wondering same with my na miata
I’ve got the same issue in my 2002 Subaru Outback. From what I can gather, rod bearings wear over time and on a cold morning when all the moving components of your engine haven’t heated up to the proper size, there’s larger gaps which can cause some tapping/knocking. As long as it’s not super noisy like in this video and it goes away as your engine gets up to temp, you should be fine. Just keep up on maintenance!
Could be an exhaust leak too...
this happened to my Honda, turned out it was a tensioner for the timing belt. I changed the whole timing belt, and after that the sound went away
I have exact same thing…
Yeah that's a very obvious knock 😬
