  • www.wildwesttoys.com shop with us and see our American made western toys. We have hundreds of free westerns sponsored by us on the Wild West Toys channel here on YT. Here we bring you another FULL WESTERN MOVIE . John Waynes Angel and the Bad Man . With commentary by Bob Terry . John Wayne made this movie in 1947 . This movie has fallen into public domain . John Wayne had been in the business since the 1920s and this was the first film he produced . By this time he really knew how to make a movie . He cast Gail Russell as the leading female in this film and Bruce Cabot and Harry Carey in major roles . The Harris Poll released in January of 2011 puts John Wayne 3rd in America's favorite film stars he is the only deceased star on the list and the only one who has appeared on the poll every year since it first started in 1994 . I really think this is in with the best 100 westerns ever made . This is one of my favorite westerns and everytime i watch this movie it even seems better than i remembered .

Jeeze! Is there ANY scene better than when Quirt first sees Penny, silhouetted against the sky like a goddess? The music...the scene itself...wow! That is some serious starmaking.

I've developed a big soft spot for this movie, because Gail Russell is so darn cute, a man can't help but fall for her adorable big eyes. Gail had such a sad life, dying at the young age of 36 due to alcoholism. She was terribly insecure and shy and sadly turned to drinking as a way of coping. During the filming of "Angel and the Bad Man", John Wayne became aware of her problem, grew concerned and protective and was helping her in every way he could, until his wife's jealousy forced him to back away from actively helping Gail. And that jealousy was tragic, because John Wayne was almost old enough to be Gail's father, and his paternal concern and guidance for the insecure young woman may well have steered her into the self-confidence that conquered the "coping-by-drinking" path that Gail eventually self-destructed with. In this movie, Gail Russell is clearly a young actress of incredible ability and potential, with solid star quality; it really hurts to think of such ability being self-destructed away. "What could have been" are really the saddest thoughts in human existence.

This is a very special film to me. My dad (rip) and my mom always make fun of how often I watched this movie. I adored Gail Russell & had wondered why there's not other films she was in until I learned of her tragic fate. 😞

+Kay Fey Gail Russell made 23 movies and 3 TV appearances from 1943 to her passing in 1961. Most of them are very good and hold up well today. The insecure Gail often said she couldn't really act, but I think her acting talent is clearly superb; she had such a fine natural style and it really shows in "Angel and the Badman". Gail also appeared with Wayne in "Wake of the Red Witch"; he made sure Gail had the leading lady role. I wish it had been possible for John Wayne to be more active in Gail's life, as I think his constant positive presence may have boosted her self-confidence, enabling her to quit drinking. But circumstances in the 1947-1961 era would have made that a public relations nightmare for both, so John Wayne was forced to help Gail only inactively in the background. To one of his biographers, Wayne said, "I really loved that girl...not in a romantic way" and he angrily cursed the "Hollywood SOB's who took advantage of this beautiful young girl". It is both heartwarming and heartbreaking to see how happy, confident and bright Gail is with John Wayne on-screen; I think he was the strong, caring father she desperately needed. The strong bond between them is evident on screen, making Gail John Wayne's best leading lady, even ahead of the superb Maureen O' Hara.

+Kay Fey You are very welcome! I just recently discovered "Angel and the Badman" and Gail Russell, and it has replaced "The Quiet Man" as my favorite John Wayne movie. Much as I love Maureen O' Hara, Gail Russell makes "Penny" so adorable and endearing in her innocent-but-principled way that it is impossible not to love the character and movie. In many ways, Penny is actually the main character and Quirt the supporting character. John Wayne produced the movie and he gave Gail Russell equal star billing to himself in the credits. And Penny gets the big entrance in the opening scenes, establishing her as a strong main character. A strong main female character is almost unheard of in 1940's westerns. I've read that as John Wayne edited "Angel and the Badman" he altered his initial thoughts on the story, because he quickly realized the story's strengths were in Gail's performance and in the wonderful way Gail and he complemented each other on screen. Also, just possibly, Wayne's paternal side came out in editing and he wanted Gail to shine just to show her how good she really was. For whatever reason, the result is "Angel and the Badman" is one of those movies almost timeless in its appeal.

He may have been almost old enough to be her father but not old enough to fall into an inappropriate relationship for a married man, as well as an unhealthy codependent relationship, and his wife was rightfully not OK with it, as any wife concerned about her marriage would be when her spouse is concerned about another woman outside of family. You can only do so much for an alcoholic; they need professional help. That's the sad truth. This is one of my favorite films. I adore her as an actress and am very sorry that her life ended at such a young age.

Angel and the Badman is one of my favorite John Wayne movies. The chemistry between John Wayne and Gail Russell is magnetic. Every time he kissed her I wished I was her and he was kissing me. There will never be another John Wayne. Long live all his movies. The ending was great unlike The Man who Shot Liberty Valance. Another great movie but The Duke doesn't get the girl. Thank you Wild West Toys for having this movie on TH-cam.

I'm a fan of this movie and when I first watched this movie which was about a year ago, I instantly fell in love with Gail Russell. Right after the movie, I looked up information on her and was sadden to hear of her unfortunate life. How she died and at such a young age with a mother that seemed to force her into acting was heart wrenching to read. John cared for her off screen and tried to help her but it seemed his wife at the time wasn't willing to be a part of that. Well we can watch this movie and enjoy are ghost loves. Take care Maxine

Gail Russell was married to Guy Madison for a while who was famous in westerns but started in his first film “ Since You Went Away “, with Claudette Colbert , a WW2 movie but, about the women who stayed at home. Guy Madison had as I remember about a 3 minute scene with Jennifer Jones and Robert Walker and his very first film, but, Guy Madison was discovered and the rest is history. Sadly as mentioned before she suffered from extreme fright and nervousness during her career in films and resorted to alcohol as a remedy. Sadly, she died so young discovered in her apartment dead days later from alcoholism. Beautiful woman with piercing BLUE eyes and great talent . But, we can watch her movies still which I enjoy.

According to John Wayne's bio, Russell had a crush on Wayne, and when Wayne cast her as his leading lady again in "Wake Of The Red Witch", Wayne's wife apparently thought there was something going on between Russell and Wayne. One night, she 'mistook' Wayne for an intruder and took a shot at him in the dark as he entered their house. This led to a nasty divorce in which poor Gail Russell was dragged into court by Wayne's wife. Probably finished off the already emotionally fragile Russell. She went into an alcoholic tailspin, became unreliable and had a hard time getting acting jobs. Wayne did cast her as the lead in a fine western he produced "Seven Men From Now" starring Randolph Scott. I thought she was still attractive and nailed her part. Worth seeing not only for Scott and Russell, but also for an early Lee Marvin scene stealing, charismatic bad guy performance.

+Louis King :This movie is a jewel. Wayne and Russell "click". Gail Russell had box office credentials no doubt. To watch Wayne's character with the rough edges slowly come under the spell of Russell's bedroom eyes and honest heart is a refreshing wind to the soul. Years ago I saw a film, "Sergeant York" with Gary Cooper as Alvin York, a hell raiser who is transformed by God's protection from a lightning bolt and the influence of a beautiful girl(Joan Leslie). In some ways the two films parallel, both with the lives of two men each emotionally cautious and determined, and their hearts charmed and won by a warm, honest, gentle feminine heart.

Too bad the inside of Gail didn't match the outside. Very lovely young lady who must have had demons that drove her to drink. At least we have the movies the she made to remember how beautiful she was.

There was a 16-year age difference between the Duke and Gail Russell, but then there was a 20-year age difference between the Duke and his widow, Pilar.

In the great movie with Gary Cooper in “ Sergeant York” Cooper was 42 and Joan Leslie who played his future wife in the movie was 16 years old. Cooper gave her a doll as a gift. That’s how Cooper saw her in real life. Definitely a big age difference but it worked! I thought Joan Leslie was actually a little older. Of course Cooper won his first academy award for the movie.

This is a great movie and incredibly well done with perfect cast members. Thank you, and I think your advertising is ingenious, smart, and well done. I love the free enterprise of our country and hope it stays capitalist country.

What is good about this film is that they didn't shove religion down our throats. But the message of non violence was the theme to the movie. Good flick.
