I love the message of this song and the way they show what it means to them. The things they have in common that they hand off the posters and their differences on their own cards. Avi and Kevin, Jewish and Christian, black and white, both American became really close and actually were roommates. If they can be friends then the rest of us have no excuses not to find a way.

The extended period of harmonics in the last minute just blew me away. It was so full of emotion and power, with all the appropriate tenderness as well. I ended up crying at the end. This is absolutely my favorite of the many versions of Imagine.

Kirstin changes her hair color frequently. She also has a variety of wigs. But it's always her.
Mitch, the guy on the left, changes his looks more frequently than Kirstin does, sometimes to the point where you ask yourself "Is that Mitch?". The answer is yes. It's always Mitch.

Lol...Mitch (the counter tenor whose voice you love 😄...we all do too, it’s insane - check out a fan’s video of them singing Aha in Singapore 🤯) and Kirstie have ever changing looks.
Kevin (vocal percussionist) joined the band initially just to provide the beats. He and Avi (the base) lived together to save money in their early days; they realized he could sing (a lovey high tenor) so with the support of his band mates (and I believe I read somewhere about singing lessons from Avi) he began vocal training and often provides the 5th harmony for a fuller sound when he’s not beatboxing. He is also a Yale grad who was on his way to medical school when they contacted him to join the band, an accomplished cellist, multilingual (English/Mandarin/Spanish?? - another Pentaholic will correct me if I’m wrong, lol), and just overall crazy talented. His vocals are still growing/improving and we love it!! He has little solos in quite a few of their arrangements (Mary Did You Know, Say Something, and most recently Amazing Grace to name a few).
They are known for Christmas music so there’s lots to choose from if you want to get into the spirit of the season...Dance of The Sugarplum Fairies is a complex arrangement that has breakout moments for both Mitch and Avi and won them their 2nd Grammy. ❤️

Kevin wrote the teenage mutant ninja turtles song they did, and can rap. Well, they all rap in one of their early videos, can't remember the song.

Aha is the name of the song that everyone is talking about. It is a cover of an Imogen Heap song . The video is a fan video filmed at the Singapore Star Vista concert.

As long as you go back 10 seconds before you start it back so you don't miss anything, then anywhere is an okay place to pause but usually after the solo is a good place to pause.

Remember their instruments are their voices in a cappella so Kevin and Avi do the majority of that work. Avi is the bass literally.

  • @Yooperbuzz1

Kevin, the beatboxer has a Bachelors's Degree in Pre-Med from Yale. He came in second in Yoyo Ma's cello competition. He invented something called cello boxing. He has perfect pitch. He speaks 4-6 languages including Mandarin. In the beginning of the group he didn't sing because he didn't think his voice measured up to everybody else's. He and Avi were roomies on the road so Avi gave him voice lessons. He is singing now.

Their brand new version of Amazing Grace surpasses every one of their earlier pieces imo, and stands at the top for emotional impact and vocal prowess. If you'd like a modern song, do Aha from Singapore (not the official video). The official video gets you lost in the story while in Singapore the song itself is simply mind-blowing.

Avi and Matt are the bass but when either one of them has a singing part Scott seamlessly takes over the bass👍👍

It seems like Scott tends to stay off camera when he's covering bass, perhaps to keep focus of that role on Matt or Avi. The live performance of Hallelujah is one of the few times I've more clearly glimpsed Scott actually putting out the low notes. But it really is impressive how seamlessly they pass the bass between each other.

Quick background summary on Avi Kaplan to save time - he is going to be in alot of the videos you react to for Pentatonix as a founding member who was there for 6 years including all of their 3 grammies. It may also be helpful for Pentatonix fans who have not kept track of him since he left the band.
Avi like Kevin had quite a bit of musical background when he joined the band. He is a classically trained bass singer, song writer and musician. He specialized in opera. He also was very involved with a cappella in 2 groups and caused the ICCA to change the name of their award from beatboxing to rythmn section to give it to him for what he did and what he does with Kevin in Pentatonix. He also sang jazz and did announcer gigs. He plays guitar and banjitar.
2 collaborations Avi did can be found with Homefree on Ring of Fire and Peter Hollens on Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair.
He took a year off after leaving Pentatonix and spent the next year writing music.
Change on the Rise, his first big solo release 7.5 million likes last time I looked, has been picked up among other uses as the theme music for a weekly podcast. He sings really low bass notes in the music for Bladerunner 2049 and was touring the USA and internationally with his own music before the pandemic sent everyone home.
I almost left out the A Cappella Academy that he runs with 2 co-founders Ben Brahm and Rob Dietz every summer for 13-18 year olds and runs fund raisers for that and visits colleges and helps with their choral arrangements. Mind you this is his idea of the slowed down schedule that he wanted after leaving Pentatonix in September 2017🙂
In March he started touring in the USA and
In March his debut EP, I’ll Get By entered
Billboard’s Alternative New Artist Albums Sales chart at #2 and its Top New Artist Albums Sales chart at #3. In addition, the 7-track set landed at #6 on the Americana/Folk chart, #13 on the Current Alternative Albums chart and #16 on the Current Rock Albums chart. His label is Fantasy Records who have artists like Paul Simon. His touring was canceled like everything else this year due to COVID-19.
So Avi is fine. He has ditched the beanies and wears his hair and beard long having moved from L.A. to Nashville to a large property with a cabin in the woods near his sister Ester and her husband and just became an uncle for the first time in the spring.

Great reaction to such an amazing song and like you said I feel like PTX were really respectful to the original and it’s message. From left to right in the video it was Mitch, Scott, Avi, Kevin and Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty lol) this is probably one of my favourite videos of theirs, the passing of the sign always makes me tear up a bit showing that while we can have a difference of religion, sexuality, race or gender there is still usually a common thread among us, everything about this is just beautiful 🥰

I think that is the major drawcard for me with PTX, they always stay respectful to the original track when they do a cover - they never try to imitate or stray too far from the original.

If you really like Mitch you must watch Love Again and Aha in Singapore. It's said he wrote the Love Again song. I'm glad you are looking into PTX. I was amazed by them. Barbershop quartettes have come a long way baby. :) I was as surprised as you when I found PTX 2 yrs ago. How could we have never heard of them b4? Some are like you who are just finding them and they can't believe they've never either. Avi has a solo out now called Change on the rise. It is so powerful. I recommend you check it out also.

Marvelous reaction. Gorgeous, a powerful, passionate rendition. PTX gets the message across ! This is the song that Scott "came out" in, and Mitch hands him the LGBTQ card. Mitch sings 6 octaves. Kirsten also changes her looks in nearly every song. LOVE THEM. John Lennon would have liked this. Thanks.

Considering your taste, I think you will love Avi's solo work.
Please, react to Change on the Rise, by Avi Kaplan
He recorded all the voices and instruments, I don't know if he directed this video but he directs most of them.
I was really sad to see him go from PTX, but now he is in full creative potential, and he is amazing!
I'm a huge fan of his solo work.

I can not recommend highly enough - for your own good - hit the 5 seconds back button when you pause. You’re wishing some crucial stuff by breaking phrases, this song you really missed the emotional heft due to your choice of when to pause. You can’t know that, but if you rewind it’s less likely to be an issue.
