H from Alabama I bought a couple of these on Temu that I have not yet used. …so thanks for the intro . You are by far the most comprehensive instructor on You Tube with the Gelli transfer processes ; a great intuitive artist , having both a masterful skill set and spontaneous movement with confidence and speed. Much appreciated !😊
Very impressed with these plats and have loads of questions. But also a little comment, I recently bought a second 8x10, gel plate brand, it is absolutely identical, packing and all, to the Gelli plate one but much cheaper for that size. I noticed that the materials were made in Taiwan, this is mentioned on both packs. The speedball plate is a totally different thing according to reviews. The baren looked good and it looked to me as if you had some differently sized plates there. I really liked the large square…. And the baren. I can’t wait for your pastels video, I have loads of the stuff, and pastel pencils too….. Seeing your techniques again is always useful. I am using my plates almost daily now, slowly working out what I can make happen best, so a recap is always welcome. I love the printmaking potential of these things, and how it is a great way to generate new ideas just because of having to work with its limitations. What a generous package of plates that was! The makers clearly see you are someone who can demo them well.
You've summed up so well what makes the gel plate appealing to me. As someone with a fair bit of traditional printmaking experience, it IS the limitations of the gel plate that encourage problem solving and finding ways. I'm yet to find a single piece of printmaking kit that is more versatile in what you can achieve. They lack the refinement of block printing or intaglio but more than make up for it in versatility and immediacy. Lovely comment, thanks : )
I believe the reason for the similarity is gelli brand brought the item to market many years ago-having it manufactured to their specs, then gel arts brand somehow obtained the exclusive rights and gelli has to purchase from them, thus the higher price. These were made in US and was not aware of the location change.
I welcome new manufacturers as gelli and then gel press have dominated the market with their exclusive rights of plates from the medical gel manufacturer here in the US. Cutthroat business! Love your videos, enthusiasm and sharing techniques with us, Mark. Cheers.
Yes...I used a non-brand made in China gel plate and it does release the paint MUCH better than Gelli Arts and Gel Press. The generic brand gel plate is easier to clean too. The plate nearly spotless after each pull.
Thanks for yet another fab video! Gelelf products are more than twice the price of Gel Press products here in Canada. And Gel Press is significantly less expensive than Gelli Arts.
Hi watching this video was like having a 3 course meal in an expensive restaurant 😂 each technique was amazing and executed to the highest spec… thx for sharing enough plates to last you a life time 🤣🎉

I just checked the pricing at TEMU (most plates sold out) and on Amazon. 8x10 plate at TEMU is USD 28, Gelli is USD 27. It looks like price advantage has evaporated. However there are some perforomance differences as you pointed out Mark in your brilliant review of techniques here. THANK YOU !!!
What I don't like about the TEMU page is that they're claiming the plates are hugely discounted ... for instance, the regular price of the 8 x 10 is showing to be $42 which is ridiculous but they're applying a 39% "discount" ... I don't like those kinds of sales tactics.
How fun watching you create with all the different techniques. It really got me excited about the chalk pastels on gelplate. Thank you, always enjoy your videos :)

Excellent result overall. If the plates are cheaper it is tempting to push them to the limit to see what can be achieved. I have been wary of using anything a bit grainy on a costly gel plate but a small cheap one offers scope for new art pathways. There is a people's art joy to your work with lively experimentation which is appreciated. The chair is a neat, satisfying image.

That's a pretty cool discovery with the pastels. I have a few Pan Pastels that I bought on a whim and then realized that they're a real pain to seal. So, they weren't getting much use, but now I want to dig them out and start playing with them again.
Thank you for this video! You have no idea how much I’m learning from you. Your passion for art is intoxicating. Love that Raven collagraph. Will look into this brand of Gelli plate. I need a few for my classroom.

Great, you are brave even for me. I wanted to buy more shapes and sizes on Amazon, but it is very, very expensive. Thanks for your post, it helps me a lot.
I learn so much in each of your videos. Thank you so much. I cant afford to do patroen but left you with a small donation. I will keep doing this when I can as I really appreciate your sharing of knowledge.
I’m gutted we can’t buy these in the UK because my plates have gotten bubbles in them and I can’t really afford to replace them. Plus I’ve never managed to get a laser print to pull on my current plates, these look like a dream!
@@ArtyAntics I teach gel printing and store all my gel plates on an acrylic plate on one side, and a sheet of paper on the other. Some of the oil will leak into the paper, but there are no bubbles that will affect the surface of the gel plate. When a plate gets too sticky (only about once every 2 years with intensive use), I rub mineral oil as a conditioner. Works like a charm ;)
I really like watching you create art. Still my favorite is your raven and I must therefore thank you for including my friend, the raven. 😍 I still remember this little roller. Wasn't it your wife, who have it to you, and it took some time until you actually used it? Meanwhile it's your favorite. It seems your wife knew long before you what you are going to be found of. 😉 Whenever I have no motivation due to PTSD, I watch you make art and off I go again with my own creativity. 🎉 Thank you so much for sharing your art creation process. 🙏🏻 Regards from Germany 🍻
This company has sent you a beautiful set of plates, hopefully they'll be available in Europe soon. And review or not, it was again a fantastic print tutorial! At the end you used that cute little wheel again, but I've missed the video about where to buy it. Do you remember which video, or could you mention it again? Great video, great prints...thanks Mark!
Thx for this great info. GelElf plates are actually made from silicone and not glycerin gel like the other brands. So I was curious to see if there was a big difference in performance. They are actually two very different tools. Deciding which to get in 16X20 size.
Thanks for releasing this on my birthday! What a thoughtful gift. How did you know? Lol. Really nice review of so many of the techniques from the last two (or so) years. Almost a Master Class in gel printing techniques. But no masking tape? Tragic! However, you included another raven, so I forgive you. When will that one be hitting the shop? There are classroom packs of gel plates, from various brands. They generally are available for only the smaller plates, and they usually are slightly thinner. The 8 x 10 is the largest I recall seeing. There are fewer options now than there used to be. (I suppose supply chain issues may be the cause.) But I just checked and found 10 packs of 5 x 7 plates from both Speedball and Gelli Arts for USD $126.49 and $144.00, respectively. I suppose inflation has taken its toll; they used to be around $10 per plate. Still, a good deal more reasonable than buying them individually. Although, you'd think the manufacturers would provide educational institutions access to order directly from them, in really large quantities. What kind of price would be reasonable, for education purposes? Regarding the video, itself, I particularly appreciate the section on image refinement directly on the plate, before printing. That's something I frequently forget to consider. That footage is a great reminder that each of these techniques is, at root, just a tool with its own strengths and weaknesses, and that the final image is the thing that matters most. I can't wait to see more about chalk pastels for gel printing! (Are you possibly using pan pastels, too? I've seen a couple of YT titles that mention them.) In any case, thank you for another excellent episode! It's always good to know whether newer alternatives of anything are as good as the originals. Hopefully, the competition will have a beneficial effect on prices.
You gave those plates a good workout Mark! Just wondering how you printed on the tissue paper. Did you use a carrier paper to feed it through the printer?
Thank you as always a very interesting video, yes art products are very expensive in Australia, especially the niche market ones which generally have to be sourced from over seas. Really enjoyed watching your creative process. Cheers!
I wish it wasn't just available through Temu. I've never used that app and the reviews online about it aren't good. I'm an educator and would love to be able to do gel printing with my class but as of yet cannot get the funds together. I'll probably just make the plates myself, because that's what I did for myself. Good video though, thanks!
Wow, I went to the link, and they are sold out already, so I couldn't get pricing. I'm a teacher, so I'll definitely be checking back. Love your videos and recommend them to my students as well.
I love that you reviewed this plate because mine arrived in mail this week and I’m totally a beginner. It beaded really badly so I googled and washed it well in dishwashing liquid. Tried various brand acrylic paints, I mostly have Atelier Interactive, Atelier Free Flow and some cheaper pouring paints. All very difficult to achieve smooth coverage. Some lovely effects at times but no solid colour. Mixed the thicker ones with gel medium or flow medium. Ok but still not great. Finally I tried a cheap Reeves black I had. And voilà!! Rolled beautifully. Is that what was the problem? Wrong paints? Is there a guide for ones that work best? Thank you for your wonderful videos. I’m so inspired.
Nice! I know my new Gelli Arts plate acted like those plates at first. I think it's the oils from the manufacturer that causes the slickness of the pull. I would venture that as you use them, the plates will become as grabby as mine did after a session of gel printing and the old newsprint method will work better on them. I think people who clean their plates with mineral oil each time probably don't experience as much stickiness as those of us who don't. I think the raven needs a perch!
"I think the raven needs a perch!" Or a cast shadow, maybe? But in either case, I think your observation is really excellent: It could look more grounded in its environment.
I adore your videos! You are an inspiration happening ! The package you present here is amazing! I saw the purchase info and product number you placed in the description area, thank you so much for the convenience! In the video it looks like you purchased a package deal with all the materials you present are done so as if you got this as a lot purchase? Did you purchase each piece individually, or is there an option to purchase the “kit” like you present?
Hello. Thank you for your videos! How do you think gels can be damaged during delivery if they are exposed to frost? Can't decide whether to order from Germany now or wait for warmer weather?
Interesting! Yes would be great if they can lower the market prices and make it more accessible. I've seen people using pan pastels as well but I don't have any. There are also slight differences between Gel Press and Gelli Plate brands. I think it's connected to magazine transfers as well but would have to double check. I have made my own plates with vegetable glycerin and gelatin for small adult classes ( small classes not small adults lol). They're reusable if they get damaged. Just melt them down and re-set. Don't know if there's an issue with it being pork gelatin as it may not be halal. I didn't get good results with vegetarian gelatin but I only tried one brand. Or go old school with pure gelatin like the Victorians although this may limit you to paint / stencils / texture rather than the more interesting techniques you have explored. Guess it also depends on your art technicians time. Either recipe is fast to make and then you leave it to set. Make a big sheet and cut it up or use smaller trays. I also bought some thick 4mm acetate sheets for storage / protection.
@pippi pippi.. I bought Gel Press brand, as they were more reasonably priced, but have yet to get a successful magazine transfer.... Could be the wrong magazines I'm using, or perhaps the Gelli arts ones (or these chinese ones) are simply better for that technique🤔.
@@craftdipper Magazine transfers are tricky. I would search for specifically 'gel press' magazine transfers on TH-cam or Google. I have been able to do them on my home made plates. Vogue style magazines are best.
I can see you have some traditional printmaking techniques with your approach. I am used to working on a large etching press also with monoprints, chine collé and collagraphy. My last prints were made using a mini electric drill. I have just started with the gel plate a month ago and am so far enthralled with the journey. I like that I can just go into my studio and be a tad more spontaneous and use what I have, without driving to our printmaking studio. You've given me tons of ideas on how to expand working on a gel plate. Is this Gelelf a kit or did you chose each plate individually? Thank you so kindly for an abundance of ideas.
Hi Janis - thanks for your kind message, I'm delighted my videos are useful to you. The Gelfelf makers sent me their whole range in hope of a favourable review and to get some airtime. I admired their confidence to send me their stuff with no pressure to give a favourable review. Turns out their plates work really well so I was happy to give an endorsement. I reckon they will be available in UK soon.
There's a MAJOR problem with your videos....they make me want to try ALL THE METHODS! If I spent all the time I wanted to in my studio the house would be a hot mess, husband would starve, and my gardens would be dead. Seriously though, thanks for all you teach us and inspire us to do. Many thanks. And yea for a cheaper alternative to other gel.plates..
I insist on Friday night takeaway so I can get in my art time. When hubs travels for work my house falls apart 😂 but no one is here to nag so art wins 🤣🤣🤣
Wonderful and informative video that includes most of your practiced technics. Eagerly awaiting your next video about using chalk pastels. By the way, I've seen a video using pan pastels (are that chalk pastels?) and make up directly on the plate but haven't tried by myself.
I'm interested that it releases more quickly than the Gelli-arts plate. I would be curious to how you are finding the plate wears some months later. Thanks for your channel. I would have loved having an art teacher like you in school.
You offer so many cool techniques and I can't wait to try them all out! Thanks!! I followed the link , where do I find the package that you have in the video? I have regular gelli plates but would love to try these!
Thanks for the lovely comment - not sure you can buy the whole package I got. The makers sent me their full range leaving me free to review it if I wanted to. Fair play to them!!!!! Most people who contact me want me to do a sponsored review where I am obliged to say good things about their products!!!!! I was impressed they were so confident in their product they were willing to risk an impartial review. Turns out their plates work really well so their confidence was not misplaced!!!! Some comments suggest they are a bit low on stock. i know they are just starting out so you might need to be patient!
Great review thank you. What is it about the crow. We have a couple of resident crows who watch over the fig trees. As soon as the figs are ripe they bellow out to their buddies and very quickly the murder arrrives. A staggering and majestic flock devouring the fruit. Oh to capture that on a gel plate!
Hey, another terrific vid -- I did click on the temu link -- alas, the verification thing (puzzle piece into puzzle) didn't accept me -- failed over and over -- I tried it a number of times -- wanted to check out the prices . . . I'm very interested . . . Anyway -- ty again for great tips!
Weird question... Did these smell? My gelli plates don't smell, but I have a couple of gel press plates and they do have a bit of a smell. Functionally they're pretty much the same, I just like to take note of things like smell because it obviously means the plates aren't the exact same.
I have a one of each brand, Gelli and Gel Press. The Gelli one is several years older but had only been used once till this year. They smell of the same thing, but the Gell Press one was very strong for the first thre or four days after I opened it up. I am not sure whether this is because one is a lot older. Now they both smell very much the same and not very strong at all. This was one of my questions too… I don’t mind the smell of the two brands I have but would not want one with a smell I do not like. Mark does not mention it in the video. If it had been overwhelming I think he might of said something! That is a lot of gel plates it must have weighed a ton!
Your videos just make my head explode (in a good way); so much creativity + ideas + talent crammed into 20 minutes!

I still remember this little roller. Wasn't it your wife, who have it to you, and it took some time until you actually used it? Meanwhile it's your favorite. It seems your wife knew long before you what you are going to be found of. 😉
Whenever I have no motivation due to PTSD, I watch you make art and off I go again with my own creativity. 🎉
Thank you so much for sharing your art creation process. 🙏🏻 Regards from Germany 🍻
A pleasure to share and I'm delighted the videos have helped you with your own creativity - that was the reason I started making videos : )
Thank you for testing your favorite techniques on this new gel plate. It was very helpful.
Quel talent! Vos vidéos sont super...
You are a great teacher! Thanks for sharing your techniques! I hope to try them all!😊
Thx for this great info. GelElf plates are actually made from silicone and not glycerin gel like the other brands. So I was curious to see if there was a big difference in performance. They are actually two very different tools. Deciding which to get in 16X20 size.
Thank you very much!
: ) a pleasure
Another fantastic video!
In the Gel elf company it is very difficult to find the actual gel plate product. Very grateful for help with how to find it.
Did you follow the links I put in video description box? If you click on the product image it should take you to wider range of size choices
Fantastic video - thank you!
Great info...thanks!
You gave those plates a good workout Mark! Just wondering how you printed on the tissue paper. Did you use a carrier paper to feed it through the printer?
Hi Gina, yep, I glued the leading edge to a carrier paper, just a normal sheet of copier paper. Glad to know you're still out there tuning in : )
@@yeatesmakes sure am! Never miss a video! Thanks so much for the great work.
Brilliant. Thanks- so helpful
muy buen resumen, esta claro que hay que experimentar , gracias por darnos tantas pistas.
Thank you as always a very interesting video, yes art products are very expensive in Australia, especially the niche market ones which generally have to be sourced from over seas. Really enjoyed watching your creative process. Cheers!
Where can you buy these gel plates? Their website does not show any gel plates as far as I can see.
Wish I had a tenth of your creativity.
Very kind Bill, hopefully some of what's in the videos will give you a little spark then one thing might lead to another!!!
"I think the raven needs a perch!"
Or a cast shadow, maybe?
@pippi pippi..
@@pippipants oh, thanks for these tips. You're very kind. 👍😊
I have been able to purchase their products in. New Zealand via Temu. I only bought one of the small sizes, but have been enjoying using it too.
Excellent printmaking
I checked the product unfortunately they rammed up the prices I’m probably going to figure out how to make one
Great bird wow
There's a MAJOR problem with your videos....they make me want to try ALL THE METHODS! If I spent all the time I wanted to in my studio the house would be a hot mess, husband would starve, and my gardens would be dead. Seriously though, thanks for all you teach us and inspire us to do. Many thanks. And yea for a cheaper alternative to other gel.plates..
I insist on Friday night takeaway so I can get in my art time. When hubs travels for work my house falls apart 😂 but no one is here to nag so art wins 🤣🤣🤣
Sounds perfect to me!
😂
my husband got sick of burnt dinners (I would put it on and get side tracked) so he started cooking. Win win
@@lorindafreeman5883, now that's how you get fired from a job! Gotta love it. And total bonus that hubby now cooks.
Wonderful and informative video that includes most of your practiced technics.
Eagerly awaiting your next video about using chalk pastels.
By the way, I've seen a video using pan pastels (are that chalk pastels?) and make up directly on the plate but haven't tried by myself.
Hi there, thanks as ever for the lovely comment. Someone else mentioned pan pastels, never used them so will put it on the list to try : )
Your videos are mostly above my skill level but the possibilities make me soldier on. You ordered from Temu? I have been cautious to do that. Maybe…
If no clamshells, how would you store them?
I'm interested that it releases more quickly than the Gelli-arts plate. I would be curious to how you are finding the plate wears some months later. Thanks for your channel. I would have loved having an art teacher like you in school.
They’re still working perfectly 😀
Oh thanks for this review! Now I need a large square one…can one have too many plates??? 😂
Great information video as always. The images pulled off really cleanly, do you think it was because the gel plates are so new?
Wowsome!!!!!!
They are incredible, love to draw them : )
Brilliant, as usual, may i ask .. have you ever made your own gel plate Mark ?
did you by all th sizes?
Génial
