At the end, it made sense why the S5 was slow at acquiring focus. Because it was in V Log, there was less contrast for the camera to work with. Hence why it was slower.
Wow, salute to you dr Boa. Didn’t expect to catch you here. The Panasonic s5 holds focus better and pulses less given your not jerking all over the place so is perfect for TH-cam videos imo. The g9 just locks on quicker but pulses more imo. I think the improvements in colour, full frame, MUCH better low light performance & versatility more than justifies the upgrade. I went from an m50 to g9 to s5 and I’m sure I’ll be happy for a couple years with the s5.
If you can wait for the native panasonic primes, then maybe the S5 is viable. None of the adapted lenses work well, and native glass is rather few. If you need something with a mature enough lens system for work right away, E-mount is the answer.

You are correct, the G9 with V-Log can't autofocus because of the reduced contrast. The colours are great, however. The price difference between the two cameras is significant and I just prefer the smaller kit. I will suffer with manual focus.
@@randykamindo4795 don't care how much DR it has, the focus was slow compared to the G9 in this video. Great videos have been made for 50 years with less DR than new cameras and they still were great movies. Specs don't make a great video or image, but proper focus and audio do.
As a G9 user, I'd love to see a comparison of it against everything in it's price range. It falls into a good price bracket that quite a lot of people can afford, especially used. I bought mine in the UK, about 9 month's ago for around 1100 Canadian dollars (£650). Is there anything in that price range that beats it as a hybrid camera?
Good job. I've been away for a long time but just bought an S5 and I have a G9, so I dared to watch this video, hoping that it wasn't just 10 minutes of you mugging for the camera. And it wasn't! I actually learned a few things. Thanks. I think maybe one more time when the S5 would be preferable is for shots where you want a shallower depth of field. It can be done with M43, but just easier with full frame.
Thanks Jorge, I think the g9 is still the best bang for the buck. I had a guy giving me crap about the new r7 and I was like "so what" nothing all that special that I dont already have with the g9. Maybe we get a G10 one day 🙂

I've had a G9 for a couple of years. Everyone who rags on it's auto focus have never used one. I've looked at the S5, nice, lots of features for video, but then you start lugging around L-Mount full frame lenses. I backpack and bike ride, sorry... FF is nice, but I love my back more. For video, G9 has few peers in it's price range and punches way up. In photo, it's really fast in focusing. Image Quality? Most people use some sort of photo editor anyway.

The point being, if I'm staring at tree branches in the corner of the screen while watching a video, the AF isnt the problem. With that being said the S5 is moderately improved vs the G9. Panasonic is probably a few years away from finally mastering video AF.
@@jay4627 iv watched short films by amateurs and it completely ruined the short as you can see the pulsing when they are following an actor. If you don't have Sony or canons latest I think every budding film maker should learn to use a follow focus and manual lenses, far more natural. Although in a TH-cam video sure a s5 or other contrast detect would be perfectly fine, iv seen atrocious cameras used for some of the largest ones and people don't seem to mind it

And yes the point about huge channels with shit cameras is a perfect example of why stuff like this is completely irrelevant to TH-cam videos. Losing focus or failing to acquire focus would be the real thing that makes a camera unusable for TH-cam, and panny seams to have fixed that.
Just a reminder, you used to have a Laowa 7.5mm. Put it on the G9 at f8 and set to infinity focus and you should be good to go. I/we don't need toneh for vlogging.
The G9 started pulsing before the first service. You didn't even have to zoom in. Good thing I'm not epileptic. G9 footage looked very magenta compared to the S5 until you switched to VLog. Then it was the reverse.
I think they're just different classes and uses, really - as always when comparing MFT to FF. What about for stills? Same story, probably. That Oly lens has that weird red edges effect that has a name and I don't know it, but I got rid of the Panny 100-300 because of it and bought the 100-400 which costs significantly more than my microloser G90 pannyboy. But does MFT have any future you think?
Well done. In my opinion from watching on my IPad, the G9 looks much better (with colors, Dynamic Range and even focus). Pulsing seems better on the S5 in certain situations you found yourself in. So I prefer the look in this video to the G9.
I am a GH5 and G9 user and loaned the S5 for 2 weeks and absolutely loved it, however non of the reasons I loved it was for video, in the end FF compared to MFT really did not bring anything to the table for video, the AF is better but only a tad, Vlog is nice but not ground-breaking. . However I fell in love with it for stills. I had the L Mount 105 lens and its a LARGE piece of glass. But stills are just fantastic. Overall compared to the GH5 and G9 it offers little in benefits for video but if you are someone who wants the best of both is a very nice option.
I mean, you get 2 stops more dynamic range in V-log, better high ISO performance, shallower depth of field, more wide angle lens options. There are tons of benefits to full frame in video. But I do love M43, don't get me wrong.
If you want small glass on full frame, get a Leica M miunt adapter and dig into the Voigtlander lenses. I have a bunch of their Nokton FF primes that are all f/1.2, f/1.4 and I love the images they make! Best thing is I can adapt them to my GH5 as well. They have the 2x crop on M43, but if I want a matching look for a B cam during interviews, I can use them.
your opinion of the Olympus lenses is 100% right, the Olympus 12-40 on the Gh5 is fantastic even with Gh5s notoriously bad autofocus. A bit of hunting but compared to panasonic lenses it's incredible.
When looking at the color rendering on two cameras side by side, it would be very helpful if you just made a quick comment on what the actual color of the shirt you’re wearing is so we know which one is more accurate. So many times they will look like two completely different colors but we have no idea what color the shirt actually is so we don’t know which one got it right.

I've noticed that my desire to use a camera for vlogging is inversely proportional to it's size. I am much more likely to walk out the door with my Sony X3000 than I am with my G85. I have an old, cheap AF, 720p, no name video camera (circa 2012) that cost $29 off of eBay that has a flippy screen. It COULD be the perfect camera if it shot 1080p and had a mic input. An X3000 would be awesome with even a small flippy screen. Do you think these camera companies collude with each other to keep the perfect camera just out of reach?
I'd say the pana af is officially passable! Not "good" but... Perfectly adequate!Also... I prefer the G9 coloring haha... Never thought that would be the case.
G9 seemed better to me at most everything but background blur. With the 8mm you could probably use manual focus and set it for 4 feet and everything would stay in focus as you moved.
I always thought the G9 looked great but I also feel like you need to raise the black levels. But it's HLG so I don't think that's allowed. The S5 still looks fantastic and once it has you you're good. The G9 focus seemed more responsive and less lazy
I think they look the same, the only difference is that he's smaller because of the ultra wide lens on the G9 so he's bigger and easier to see on the full frame. So his hat with all of the fur is easier to see. Full frame seems to be softer while MFT has a sharper image for the most part. I have a Mitakon 17mm lens which is kind of soft on my G9, it looks amazing.
The problem of craziness as a signature is that it gave less info for the same amount o time. So, do what you have to do, but definetely not for me. Happy new year!
Panasonic's insistence on contrast based focus systems is mainly because it is stuck in L mount alliance. The most elite member of the alliance is of course Leica and Leica's several focusing mechanisms are contrast based. Hence, to keep compatibility with Leica, Panasonic is forced to keep contrast detect system. Sigma is a lens maker and is thus free to make any kind of lens. If it implements the Sony way of life, Leica lenses will not perform as well as they should. Hence the trap Panasonic had found itself in.
I’m not being a smart ads but as someone who is mainly a long time photographer and dipping my toes into video for outdoor interviews please share those recommended settings as much as you can.

On the G9, have you monkeyed around in settings AF custom settings (photo)? In the 372 page manual instructions found on pages 90 and 91.

I set my G9 to AF setting 3 and very happy with the results. The speed is slower but the breathing is gone

Oly fisheye on G9 did have some odd distortion almost like rolling shutter....

Pany G9 have better colors! Why? You use profile / LUT for this? Or maybe use customs set for S5?

I'm personally using the Mega Speed MS140K camera for my slow-motion shots. It's a bit hard to edit though...

G9 seemed better to me at most everything but background blur. With the 8mm you could probably use manual focus and set it for 4 feet and everything would stay in focus as you moved.

I always thought the G9 looked great but I also feel like you need to raise the black levels. But it's HLG so I don't think that's allowed.
The S5 still looks fantastic and once it has you you're good. The G9 focus seemed more responsive and less lazy
Sony's menu system is filling Casey's mind with doubt and regret, and the courtship dance with Panasonic starts again.
S5 slightly better in almost every way... BUT it is 50% more expensive. I really liked the G9 image.
That G9 still is pretty solid and holding its own , the old flag ship camera that will not sink.
I thought the G9 focus looked quite useable. On the other hand, the S5 focus seemed a bit lazy.

I had S5 pre-ordered for two weeks then saw too many videos of horrid AF...picked up G9 instead my guy!
Have you got an ND filter??? That gave it away....not all f-stops are created equal.
I think the g9 won the test for focus but maybe not for picture quality
I think they look the same, the only difference is that he's smaller because of the ultra wide lens on the G9 so he's bigger and easier to see on the full frame. So his hat with all of the fur is easier to see. Full frame seems to be softer while MFT has a sharper image for the most part. I have a Mitakon 17mm lens which is kind of soft on my G9, it looks amazing.
For the money it's hard to beat the g9. Whenever a new sensor gets released we will see new mft bodies.
If you have to deside between panasonic or panasonic... pick Olympus.

A G9 is in my future seeing my GH5 has developed hot/dead pixels. Expect a GH6 and a G10 to be announced right after I get it.

The problem of craziness as a signature is that it gave less info for the same amount o time. So, do what you have to do, but definetely not for me. Happy new year!
Panasonic's insistence on contrast based focus systems is mainly because it is stuck in L mount alliance. The most elite member of the alliance is of course Leica and Leica's several focusing mechanisms are contrast based. Hence, to keep compatibility with Leica, Panasonic is forced to keep contrast detect system. Sigma is a lens maker and is thus free to make any kind of lens. If it implements the Sony way of life, Leica lenses will not perform as well as they should. Hence the trap Panasonic had found itself in.

Agree, to the point that I’m thinking of getting a second G9 instead of exploring a different system.
I’m not being a smart ads but as someone who is mainly a long time photographer and dipping my toes into video for outdoor interviews please share those recommended settings as much as you can.
