A month ago I looked at my skin and I have had tiny forehead bump, flaky cheeks and oily skin. That day I said enough went cold Turkey cutting sugar and junk food. Started drinking 3 liters of water daily (sometimes just one or two but the goal is three) Started taking supplements, zinc, omega 3, vitamin b complex and vitamin d. Last but not least my routine was flawed, I was using a 7 step skincare routine (including products I've seen online but I haven't researched) so I listened to Liah and started a new four step routine; cleanser just in the evening (low ph cosrx) and if I feel super grimey in the morning I'll use Korres Greek yoghurt cleanser. As for serum.. I have many from the ordinary (bha 2%, retiniod, niacinamide) cosrx AHA, klairs vitamin c the innisfree green tea serum. as for lotion I have cosrx oil free lotion or innisfree balancing lotion if I want more hydration and I mix any of them with 3 drops hemp seed oil or grape seed oil. after that I use sunscreen I use jack black oil free sun guard (has zinc oxide) i rarely use toner but when I do it's right after cleaning and I use the Thayers toner.
I also cut cult masks like clay masks because they suffocated my skin.
My dear friends it took me 2 months and my skin feels amazing, no bump, no flakiness. And I look amazing I constantly get compliments on how fresh I look.
Oh and one last thing there is a website called skincare karma that will tell you if the ingredients are comidgenic (will break you out) also, do the patch test under your ear to check if the product will break you out.
love and great skin my friends.

I started hardcore watching Liah around 2-3 months ago, and completely changed my skincare by eliminating anything that would dry my skin out more (i have extremely dehydrated, acne prone skin), I got my self some amazing the Ordinary products (and others with help of Sephora peeps), and I can 100% say that my skin has never been better. My acne scars are fading beautifully, and my acne os soooooo under control! Understanding what I goes into my skin has been a life changer , so thank you Liah for helping me understand my skin and motivating us to make healthy skin changes :)

do you mind sharing which the ordinary products you got? we have the same skin type so it'd be cool to hear what worked for you!!

    • @naddyaa.6822
      @naddyaa.6822 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

lucy k Ofcourse! Okay here I go. from the Ordinary, I got the niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate 10%, the caffeine solution for my eyes and I just got the buffet and Im trying it out. The website says you should only use 3 of their products together at a time, so i am experimenting on how to best match them. Liah mentioned in her video about getting rid of acne scars that vitamin c shouldn't be mixed with niacinamide, but the magnesium ascorbyl was okay to use in conjunction with it (if you havent watched her the Ordinary review I highly recommend it, she talks more about this). I also got the AHA and BHA chemical exfoliant they have, and it works great. I use it once a week or every other week depending how my skin feels. Just know they are strong and while they are great at reducing scars and minimizing pores they are very potent and sting, AND ALWAYS USE SUNSCREEN (I use the Cotz Flawless Complexion SPF 50 because its a physical suncreen, I am outside a lot and it goes great under makeup) because they cause photosensitivity. And just in general other products I love are the L'occitane comfort cremes as moisturizers, they are shea based light weight and suuuuper hydrating. I mix my moisturizers with either rose hip oil or marula oi l (the Ordinary has some good ones). Cleansers, I switch around depending how my skin is feeling I would go between an oil cleanser from L'occitane (specially for makeup) or the Movis bar from Lush (hydrating, gentle and great for asne scars). I also started doing the 7 skin method occasionally Gothamista and Liah have talked about with the Bioderma hydrating toner. And if you are curious about some occasional face masks the Hot Vegan from Pacifica is amazing at destressing and clarifying (and affordable), and the rose mask from Fresh is super hydrating and toning. This may seem like a lot (in a video about giving your skin a break lol) but I dont do ALL of these every day. I've also introduced these slowly and seen that they work. My usual routine is AM and PM cleanse (with water or actual cleanser),toner if i feel like i need it, the ordinary serums, oil, moisturizer and suncreen. Ofcourse this is just what works for me and I had slowly been giving my skin that "down time" Liah suggested before I got to her videos, but maybe some of these things might work for you!
PS. I recommend watching Gothamista as well, she as dehydrated skin type as well and has done some videos with Liah in the past.
      Hope this helps!

+Naddya Alicea ahhh wow you're an angel for typing all of that!!! i tried to do a break like liah talks about in this video, but i had to stop after three weeks because it messed up my skin even more;; i don't really have bad acne (not sure if the little amount i have even qualifies as acne lol) but i alwayyyyyys get scars/hyperpigmentation, so it looks a lot worse than it actually is :^( i'll definitely check out all of your recommendations, and thank you so much for the help!!!!

This is legit advice. After being hit by bouts of sudden adult hormonal acne, I discarded all my products and went natural. I have 2 cleansers (for double cleansing), 1 DIY toner, rosehip seed oil as moisturiser and a clay mask. After a year of this "diet", I'm now incorporating Tamanu oil for my scars and a sunscreen :) Minimal is the way to go !

@@neversa2786 just don't trust the packaging with 99% aloe written on it! That was my mistake! I have the 99% The Saem one and it has a really high level of fragrance! T^^T I should have gone on skincarisma before buying it T^^T I checked the ingredients for a lot of famous korean brands and a lot of them with "99% aloe" written have alcool AND fragrance! So you really have to check the ingredients before buying it (pkease don't make my mistake)! So far the better one that I found was the Etude House one

Stefany Yvonne I think in combination of what Liah is saying and a look at your diet and drinking water will help. if you are older than 20 and having cystic acne, ask your doctor about spironlonactone. It's a medication written by off label targeting art cystic acne and worked for me within two weeks. It's suppresses androgen production with very little side effects and it is not an antibiotic. Hope this helps :)

You're the best youtuber on skincare related videos. Your videos are very VERY informative and I love it! As for myself, I am currently 17, turning 18 in a month and have been having trouble with acne :(. Recently, it just kind of explodes all over my face and I'm left with a lot of active acne right now. It's really really bad and since I'm fair-skinned, my face appears so so red. I have a lot of acne scars and active acne and by watching your videos, it just makes it more enjoyable! I've been constantly on a look out for ingredient list before purchasing skin care products nowadays haha. Love your videos!!

I don't know if this would hep but it's natural to go through severe acne during hormonal changes, and there's only so much skincare can do to tame this. You skin needs more rest and recovery when it's hormonal and make sure you treat your body well! Inside out xx

This really works! I've actually been skincare fasting for almost a month now and my skin really loves it. I did this because I was feeling quite dehydrated so I thought I'd just let my skin breathe. When I would put on makeup, I just hated how flaky my skin was because I was using 10% benzoyl peroxide and my eyes were getting flaky too even though none of the product was applied on that area. After skincare fasting, my skin looks healthy and it's not being stripped of its oils either. No more flaky skin. One other thing that works is water. Water is super important for many parts of the body and you should be drinking it regularly. Staying hydrated really helps your skin and so does sleep. When you don't sleep, your body's cortisol levels get higher and that can cause acne. Try cutting out sugar, it is such a bad enemy to our bodies and studies have shown that it can be just as addictive as drugs so be careful. A great alternative is fruit since it has natural sugars. You should be cutting out junkfood as well and try getting in more protein, fiber, and healthy fats along with fruits and veggies of course. Getting all your vitamins in is important as well so learning a little bit more about nutrition could help a lot. Try this out, and your skin will love it too!

    "LESS IS MORE."
I definitely believe in that. I have been suffering from acne for 7 years now. I have tried every single product in the market targeted for acne-prone skin, but nothing really worked for me. I stopped using everything except facial cleanser. The cleanser leaves my skin really dry so I tried a new one and lo and behold, I finally found my HG facial cleanser. It stopped my acne from popping out! I paired it with argan oil and I swear, these two products helped my skin clear up.
Unfortunately, things went back to normal. I had clear skin for a couple of years. I thought my skin was okay to the point where I can introduce new products to my 2-step routine. I tried this whitening peel-off mask and it dried out my skin. The next day, I got a pimple and it didn't stop until both of my cheeks are covered with them. I also noticed that whenever I get an acne, they always come in pairs. I GET TWO FRESH ACNES EVERY SINGLE TIME. I kid you not.
I hate myself for thinking that once my skin clears up, then I can introduce a new product to my face. I just tried one product, ONE product and my skin went #%$^&.
As for the products I'm using now, the facial cleanser I have is super gentle. It has no: sls/sles, alcohol, fragrance, and other irritants. I also use aloe vera gel (The Face Shop/Nature Republic) every night as a sleeping mask. Again, I'm just using two products. I am thinking of purchasing a bottle of rosehip oil for I heard that it is suitable for acne-prone skin.
Watching Liah's videos definitely helped me in choosing the right products and what to avoid. I chose the cleanser I'm using based on Liah's guidelines on what to avoid in a product. My skin may not be good right now, but I am sure with Liah's video guidance, I can bring back my clear skin anytime soon. I just won't start introducing new products ever again. 😂😊

3 things that have cleared my skin:
    1) Streamlining and simplifying my skincare regime (limiting actives)
    2) Using nourishing oils for cleansing and moisturizing (hemp and argan)
    3) Checking the comedogenic rating of all products I use on my face through Cosdna!
The only "acne treatment" I use is the p50 toner, which has BHA. I contribute most of my success with just nursing my skin barrier and cutting out the comedogenic products.
I hope this helps some of you!

First of all, I wanted to say, thank you so so much for making this video. I've been attacking my skin so much I didn't realize it was suffocating. My skin had been really flaky, especially the cheeks. I have pimples ALWAYS even I'm not on my period. I've been following your tips from this video for almost a month and oh my God, my skin is clearing up and glowy! All I need to do now is treating the acne scars, but I think I'll stick to this routine until I am happy with my skin. I've been a skincare hoarder for a long time, I attack my face with the 10 steps korean skincare, the clay mask every week, numerous serums and essence, toner and everything else. I didn't change any of the product when I started the routine, but I minimize it. For daytime, I skip cleansing (only wash my face) I use only moisturizer and spf, at night I double cleanse, moisturize and facial oil if I feel it's a little bit dry. At first I felt really uncomfortable for not cleansing my face but I noticed my face is hydrated. For 3 weeks I slowly introduce essence to my skin and my skin is extremely happy with it. I've cut down deep fried food, everytime I wanted to have a snack I'll have some granola. Green tea has been my favorite and I have them in the morning before class. I tried to drink 3 litres of water everyday and surprisingly my skin feels so soft in the morning. My skin has been glowy and healthy, my makeup applies really easily. Thank you so much for this video! I am suffering from acne since high school and now I'm 22. My skin started to clear up for the first time! I am so darn happy! Thank you, Liah💕

You've saved my face. Literally. I have the rotten luck of having acne prone skin and also suffering from atopic dermatitis; which means that 99% of the "very drying harsh exfoliating" acne treatments are out, unless I want my face to start cracking and bleeding. Then I came across a couple of your videos about healing acne with oils and the problem with skincare marketed "for acne" (I'm paraphrasing the title of the videos obviously) and the lightbulb went off in my head. I've been focusing for twoish months on just healing my face (with the appropriate non-irritating and non-comedogenic products) and surprise! Not only has the cystic acne gone down a lot, the dermatitis is mostly in check!
    Thank you!

I couldn't agree enough with this video. This is the ultimate skincare philosophy. I basically used feel that if a skincare product was out there on the market, they I needed it in my routine, regardless of what it did and whether I needed it. I was so frustrated when I stopped using all these products that my skin would improve drastically. I was always awful at constantly chasing the newest product and changing my skincare routine which caused horrible reactions. I've been following this type of routine since November with simple, basic, and gentle products with a minimalistic routine and I cannot begin to describe the change in my skin. Totally have to stress the final step - commit - as it look me 3 months to see actual change in my skin, and around 6 months for it to get to a place where it was actually getting to where I wanted to be and receiving compliments etc. My philosophy now comes down to respecting my skin. I am not smarter than my skin, it knows what it is doing. I can only do things to help nudge and assist it in the right direction. The next time someone compliments me on my skin and asks me what I've been using, I'm sending them to this video.

I’ve started giving my skin a break! In the morning I use CeraVe hydrating cleanser, then TO squalane and The Beet Shield. In the evening I use jojoba oil for oil cleansing if I wear makeup, and then a dermatologist prescribed non foaming gel cleanser. Then I use the treatment she also gave me, mixed with DE b-hydra and a drop of squalane. I swear it’s making my skin improve so fast to just put a pause on the drying masks and spot treatments I was using constantly.

I am a doctor, in fact a cardiac surgeon n my daughter has been going through this phase of acne for a long time so much so that children started bullying her in school too n she started losing self confidence n I am always insisting on a good diet. on the other hand she is always trying out various things that have propped up on the net but to no rescue. recently I took over looking after her skin with good diet and skin treatments and there is not even a scar or any trace of pigmentation. I am happy she finally listened to me.

It must be destiny 🌴🌴🌴. I started doing this like a week or two before you made this video because MY SKIN WAS JUST NOT GETTING ANY BETTER! The rationale totally makes sense; honestly my boyfriend made me jealous of his perfect skin and he don't do diddly-squat to it. So I figured of everything I've tried, almost nothing was something I hadn't. I was doing just coconut oil at night (literally, just cleansing with coconut oil and rinsing it off) and toner and moisturizer in the morning with an AHA every now and then (Blithe splash mask) and I could see a significant increase in the texture and quality of my skin even though there were still a few blemishes, covering them only with a hydrating concealer. After only doing this for a few weeks my skin looks so much healthier and less parched, not exaggerating the texture I had (and still kind of do) on my cheeks. Thank you for being such a delightful and honest content creator on this site, I think you nailed this 100% and to everyone else out there considering this sort of approach: Liah's right, there's no miracle in a jar, and be patient!🌴!🌴!🌴! I think after doing this for another few weeks, maybe even another month, I'll have a better idea of what skin type I actually have. 'Cause so far coconut oil doesn't seem to be bothering me-with-oily-skin-or-so-I-thought-but-this-could-also-be-because-coconut-oil-is-magic. *shrug*

    This is so truuueeeee.
Me having to battle with acne since I was 12 years old until now 20 years old. I get very very frustrating and so desperate to find the best solution for my acne and acne pittef scars and hyperpigmentations and uneven skintone. I consulted a dermatologist and gone up with Benzol Peroxide, Retinols, Clindamacyin, and such harsh ingredients plus they're quite expensive .. For about 3-5 months everything is good my skin cleared up so I thought it was about time to stop those harsh ingredients and boom! After many trial and errors again and again.. Nothing really seemed to work for my skin anymore. So I #PressResetChallenge and my skin never felt so good like this before, My skin is oily-dehydrated and dry at some area, so I cut the toners, the essence, the creams,
I only go with mild or gentle cleansers, Serum (I don't have any moisturizer yet) and that's it (+sunscreen at AM) although I do get cystic/hormonal acne.. My face doesn't get fired up. And they seem to heal faster
Yeah I don't do spot treatment anymore. I figured it's about time that my skin should get the TLC it craves for

I have been suffering from acne since I was 11 or 12 (currently 16). I have been on HOMEOPATHIC treatment since an year after I started getting acne. I had severe acne and there is a huge improvement in my skin. But it isn't totally gone. And last year I got to know that I have PCOD (Polycystic Ovary Disorder). *facepalm*
My dermatologist said that I really need to take care of my body as well and keep my weight under control or its gonna make the PCOD worse. So I was like 'I need to do dis! Bish time to start taking better care of my body!' (buy was low-key crying internally coz now I had 1 more problem to deal with).
I started drinking more water (warm water not cold; it is recommended in Ayurveda; even in summers; sometimes normal water is alright but never cold), a mug full of green tea, stopped overeating, removed sugar and milk from my diet, eat very less to no rice (I eat 2 Roti made of wheat instead), no bread. Never really ate junk food. And just by doing this I lost 4kg weight in 2 weeks.. wow. That was actually pretty easy.
Liah unnie always says treat yourself internally (even in the comments lol). And really I am seeing results. I've been following her advices and _I just wanna hug her and cry and say thanks_ cause they work. I'm basically getting free treatment. THANK YOU UNNIE!!
K-beauty and skincare in general is fun and it works.^^

I remember when I had to stop my skincare routine, because I could not afford it. I was washing my face in the shower and just using my body moisturizer. My skin felt so much calmer and balanced, the itchiness stopped and the breakouts were so reduced they did not leave any scarring. I was so suprised. Then I saw a skincare update of another youtubber, she had done the same after so many harsh acne routines. She stopped using "acne products" and "oil-free" anything and her skin was much improved. I happy to see others like you and Gothamista, taking skincare seriously and thinking about what it really needs. Great video XD.

Vanilla Spice hey! I have digestive problems too. I definitely recommend probiotics and anti oxidant vitamins like vitamin C. I use Yakult probiotic drinks and have a chewy vitamin c once a day before I eat or drink anything else. Also drinking water on a daily basis helps too. I also recommend eating foods that help with your gut like rice and vegetables. Good luck! It gets better I promise.

Dear Liah, I have been following your channel for a while, I love your videos and your aproach to skincare.
I thought this challenge was a great idea but I was honestly scared to strip down my routine to the basics until...
I watched some of your videos again and conected the dots: I am putting too many things on my face, my lipid barrier is damaged and I need to stop! I have only been doing the Skincare Diet Challange for about 5 days but omg I can already see and feel an improvement with my skin! i am trying to be very strict and not adding anything extra for two weeks.
I was overdoing it with AHA and BHA with the hopes to speed up the purge period (bad idea) and my skin would just burn when I used my regular products, my face was inflamed and congested, it has horrible. I am so glad I started this challenge and I have you to thank for my skin transformation! I wish I had taken "before" pics to share with people, but I was too ashamed by my skin condition.

Do you refrigerate your Rose Hip seed oil?
I read somewhere you really should as it oxidizes quickly, but then I read elsewhere that refrigeration changes the composition of it so you should take it out and let it go back to room temperature FIRST before using it which seems like WAY too much work.

Skincare fasting has really worked for me. I was breaking out and my skin was irritated and bumpy from all the new products I was putting on my face. I put my skin on a “detox” by using just these minimal steps and while I still get the occasional pimple it’s not like before where a new red mark or acne comes up everyday

I literally tried everything, even doing this but nothing helped whatsoever.. Still had acne. Only 3 months ago I started Accutane and that is what has pretty much ALREADY cleared my skin almost completely. As soon as I started from day 1 I saw a difference. I think this only would work for people who don't have severe acne.. Otherwise I think medication is the best way to clear it.

Im suffering for severe acne for more than a year, I tried everything and nothing worked, I was so desperate and sad until:
-I cut gluten. I start to see difference in a month
-stop using harsh exfoliation and spot treatment
-only use cleanser, rosehip oil and spf
-do a facial mask with a moisturizer whenever I can
-try to sleep more, becuase my skin is happier and heal faster
I still have acne but this routine works the best until now.. I hope it help someone, dont give up, simplify and listen to your body :)

pause normal skincare and use minimally skincare routine which make my skin better now, i just use vit c and sunblock for sunny days and just vit c for night routine, and i just wash my face with garnier matcha, its really really works, i never in love with face wash until i meet that thing. but for daily food, i don't consume egg at all (just for some food with egg ingredients) and minimally milk and cheese consume, don't forget to drink water, and also love your skin! healing from mentally much better than physically.

I did a skin care purge around Jan or Feb of this year. I had been dealing with a lot breakouts and just unhappy skin. I started using a lot of acne products and harsher stuff hoping they would help but I felt like they were doing more harm than anything. So I stopped using them, and cut out physical exfoliation, astringent, foaming cleanser and started using gentle products. My skin has made a complete change for the better.

I've been suffering from hormonal acne for about a year and I've tried SO many products and nothing, as I live in Canada the cold would get my skin even drier and I just thought that I had dry skin. As I was watching your videos, I decided to use less products and see what would happen, I would use one cleanser in the morning an essense a moisturizer and of course sunscreen, at night double cleanse, and I would mix mix my oil with my moisturizer.( I used to do the 10 skin care routine everyday day and night!!!) That's all. SO let me tell you how I discovered that my skin was just a dehydrated oily skin ... yup. My Skin feels super moisturized and hydrated now, my acne has tremendously reduced which is amazing. I will probably change my oil to one that will fade my acne scars really soon, but other than that this is is just perfect. Thank you Liah.

I have been subscribed to you for a long time now but fail to really focus on your videos.. should have known better then I would have been guided well..
Suffering acne since puberty hit me then last year, I noted skin has improved after derma care (but that took long months since I am not a regular plus I dont have legit skincare routine that time). When I noted improved skin that's when I decided to introduce skincare products on my skin..and three months later, everything came back...😥
So now I am struggling with acne again but haven't come back to derma. Watching this is really informative.. Thank you! I have already started with gentle cleanser and aloe vera but still using other skincare products.. Will follow through this minimalistic skincare approach. Thanks Liah!

I think telling people to stop their acne medication without having a medical advice or without giving notice to their dermatologists first isn't the best idea tho.... I mean I do think we should all have a minimalist skincare routine too but I don't think it's a good idea for people who are on like Accutane to stop when they feel like it and get back to it if ever this type of routine doesn't work, if that make sense.... >< It might be obvious to ask for advice first but we never know right :) (that was just my opinion as a pharmacist student so I might not be knowledgable enough yet :) ) Been loving your videos and I really think you're one of the best youtubers on the skincare topic hehe, can't wait to see what you have for us next! Cheers! ❤❤❤

    • @LiahYoo
      @LiahYoo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes that's true! At the end of the day, I think everyone should take any advice as a grain of salt and this shouldn't be a replacement to a professional medical advice. (refer to my disclaimer!) This video was intended to give another option for those who feel like nothing is working for them and see how their skin works without any strong meds/treatments.

Love this on account that I have simply never bought into the 10 step routine. I know a lot of people love it but no one has ever given me a reasonable explanation on how certain products work and here things like essences are getting marketed as either toners or less potent serums, plus the lack of adequate scientific research behind this makes me a skeptic. Plus the family members with great skin pretty much just wash and moisturize and instead eat very healthy and go to the gym. Except my mom and sister who are forever poreless for reasons I do not know. Like my sister legit has slept with makeup on yet not a pimple. In fact, when her skin sucks it's heat rash! She clearly got my mom's good skin.

I used to wash my face twice a day, with a cleanser, a toner and some acne cream treatment. My face was oily and at the same time it looked damaged because of all those products and my acne was still there.
One or two weeks ago I found your channel and I decided to listen to you because I had the same skin care for over a year and my skin was getting worse.
Now I only wash my face at nights (and I’m gentle while applying the cleanser) I moisturize it and apply suncream protection and at nights I put on some vitamin C to make my scars fade away. It’s only been a freaking week and my skin looks better, of course I have acne but it’s getting better and my scars are fading.
I also changed a few thing in my routine, just in case someone wants to know:
-I wash my pillowcase every week.
-I wash my hands before I clean my face or apply any products on it.
-I don’t touch my face/let other people do it.
-And I don’t let my hair touch my face, especially when it’s oily.
I’ll keep you guys updated! But yeah, it’s been a week and my skin is getting better, if you want advice, quit those acne treatments and focus more on mosturizing and protecting your skin from the sun.

About four months ago I gave up using a cleanser. I had really bad oily skin and now my skin is normal. During the day I use Cerave moisturizer spf with some safflower oil. At night I use the Cerave moisturizer with rose hip oil. To cleanse I just splash my face with lukewarm water and once a week I use a konjac sponge to exfoliate. My skin has never looked better. Such a simple routine. My derm freaked out when I said I wasn't using a cleanser so I decided to use a really gentle one at night. One by one the pimples starting coming back. I stopped using a cleanser and they went away again. I don't use any foundation or concealer products but I do wear eye makeup.

    • @LiahYoo
      @LiahYoo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

+Jessica Therrien Yeah.. Your derm might have been shocked! But cleanser can directly affect the skin barrier, that's why it's so so crucial to opt for a non foaming gel cleanser

I don't deal with acne, but have very sensitive skin and am trying to simplify my routine. I still try out more products than I should because I actually haven't found a BASIC skincare routine that I'm happy with. I have cleansers and hydrating toners and serums I enjoy, it's mainly finding a nourishing, non-irritating, non-congesting moisturizer that's difficult.
