So true. I grew up with my mom coming home complaining about how no one keeps the office clean, offers to buy lunch, decorate cubicles, etc. like she does. I was always thinking why do you volunteer to do stuff outside your job description then bring the frustration home, especially when you find out that coworker, asst. manager, janitor, etc. still don't like you. The best is when someone goes on vacation or maternity leave and everybody takes on a little extra until they come back. Then the boss thinks “Oh, awesome. When can get it all done with one less person.” Then after a few years you realize what was an office of 12 is now an office of eight, you are twice as tired, yet they can never afford raises over three percent. “We just need to be more profitable.”

This literally happened at my job a few years back. A very good person, made tremendous movements for our dept passed. They said if anyone was absent the day of the funeral, they would need a doctor's note, they couldn't call off nor request vacation time or PTO. Welp, the joke was on them because a few people were planning to just go to the wake and go to work so the office wouldn't be empty. Instead we all called off, we all got doctor's notes and family didn't want any of the higher ups there, told them they were officially not invited because their chicken s!#t behavior. They didn't want their condolences or anything. We went and wasn't a darn thing they could do about it.
My last few years in corporate America, I carried a copy of my job description so I could check it when asked to do extra work. I checked it often. I also hung a "NYC" above my desk. Even though I an originally from NYC it reminded me other's work was "Not Your Concern". Saved me from a lot of top tier anxiety medicine.
Yep, I had to talk to my coworker about always helping out. Now folks dont want to do their job and they standing around talking and she mad because they expect her to do it. I learned real quick, if they can get someone else to do their job they will.
That was me before I went on sick leave. I was an RTA (traffic desk I monitored and watched the handle time for calls) for call center. On the weekend I was the Team Lead, on site manager, payroll, IT, counselor there early to unlock the lock box so they could get they stuff to log in on time. I was just doing too much. Then last week I received a call that since I was going into long term I was being let go. Don’t go above and beyond. Lol.

Chile, it's 10:15 am on a Friday. I just finished my breakfast, checked twitter, & watch your video. NOW I'm ready to get some work done before I get ready to go home an hour early this afternoon.
Dang, I needed to hear that today, after having to get up early on a Saturday for an IT meeting to discuss how to fix a problem with a program. I do not work in IT. It was decided by management that I needed to attend this Zoom meeting. So I did, in pajamas. Add to that my co-worker, who I trained, getting a promotion two levels above what we were and her old work being given to me to follow-up on and well, "that's not my job" will be my new slogan.
I was the type that every manager knew my name because I did too much and went above and beyond yet I never got awards or recognition beyond word of mouth but people that constantly get pulled to the side or show up late or time steal all have awards and get special recognition.
Me yesterday! Covering district classes, my students taking 3 different tests, watching 3 subs cover 8 quarantine classes, and helping with testing! I've been great all year, but I got 5 miles from home and started crying. One of my students was waving the red flag like, hey let me help, because you got too much going on. I was team too much all week and it wore me thin.
You're an MVP!!! Kudos to you. Take care of you first, Sis. I had to learn that the hard way. When my day/week gets stressful, here comes the pto request for my mental health and body.
Gurlllll preach! Because this used to be me and then I realized I was leaving stressed and with headaches. Then I thought what the word this ain't my job I ain't the manager. They ain't paying me enough to lose hair. I had to scale it back!
I used to be super helpful but it wasn't appreciated nor compensated so I quickly learned to only do what I need to do for MY job role. People always want help doing their jobs but they never help do yours... and they sho ain't sharing those paychecks! Me then: Sure, I don't mind helping out. What do you need? Me now: Pretends to be deaf and dumb every time anybody asks for help. 🤷♀️😂
When people realize that if they drop dead they will be replaced the next day, they will stop trying to overdo it on these jobs. Do what you have to do, what’s expected of you and leave. Don’t run yourself into the ground trying to be an unappreciated overachiever.
I’m laughing and crying at the same time. I’m a teacher so the “extra tasks” are the job. Actually teaching is a break from all the other stuff we have to do.
So true! However, Georgia is a right to work state. The employer can fire you for anything. That's why I started working for myself. I was always going above and beyond. It didn't get me any where.
I learned the hard way. I was asked to do a coworker job due to her personal issues and being granted a week off🙄 I did if after all outside of 1 manager I'm the only other one who knows the job. I did it. She can back and I'm still doing it. I emailed asking why? If I gotta do 2 jobs I need 2 paychecks. Next morning in a meeting before I even sat down at my desk. We need to talk to you. We are disappointed in you, we are all a team player here. I played it cool after all I need to keep a roof over my head at the end of the day. Sorry you took it that way, it was just a vent. Everything was laughed off even gotta a hug. I was called the office den mother...lesson learned. Office shut down 48 hrs later for covid and we ain't never been back. I've backed way off and I do what I've been doing and take on no added responsibilities. Im quick to say, I don't know ask your manager. I thought it was important to be diligent, hardworking, caring, professional. I can't tell you how many people think I'm the manager and I'm not. I do more in my almost 3 years on the job than people who have been there 10. I kid you not. If I drop dead they won't send a company flower basket.
I worked at Kroger a couple years back, and they ALWAYS asked me to do extra stuff. I'd it horribly wrong and act like I'm so dumb and just don't get it. Made the day more entertaining and I got away with a lot and doing less work.
Yezzzzzz, EJ!!! 👏👌 We need to talk about pay! I remember assisting a “friend” and she decided to partner with her friend and all of a sudden I’m assumed to answer and assist the friend, too! Nope...I DUN TOLD YOU both...I agreed to help HER. This ain’t no buy one get one free.
Yes ma'am! I'm a teacher, but this year, I'm also a counselor and a social worker. I'm also a web designer and a customer service professional. We spend our money to do our job. Teachers should be making six figures, but this year we needed six figures and a bonus.

A few unimportant co-workers nickname me Lazy, cause I don't do cartwheels, head stands and back flips for them. I start my "Lazy" day for me and do only my "Lazy" responsibilities and take my "Lazy" azz back home to cook, straighten up and tend to my family. That's my "Lazy" evening 🙂
😂😂😂 omg so true! Even in a good mood, I do MY job and maintain boundaries because the minute I'm no longer capable of doing MY job, they've already found a replacement. Damn going above and beyond 😒
Yes! At the beginning of 2020, I said I am not carrying nobody no more. I was making up for my colleague lack because I like to get stuff done. So, since we came back to work, everybody noticed he don't do shit. 😭
I felt this in my spirit. Cause working in retail with looney customers who need their egos and feelings catered too is so annoying. I'm nobody's therapist. It's not in my job description 🙃
I constantly tell ppl if they keep taking on all these extra tasksksksks, the supervisor will make it part of their job! I do the job that they pay me for. Nothing more, nothing left. When I was at UPS an employee died. They covered him with a rain coat and kept them trucks moving!

i once had a colleague who got sick for a short while and eventually passed on. The same day he died we heard the news in the office and were still trying to make sense of it all when another colleague gets told by our department head that she will now be taking over the guy's work... lol like damn at least let us shed a few tears first. So yeah this work thing is def overrated. I have a habit of overstaying at work but i constantly have to remind myself to sign out once it's closing time. Cos at the end of the day no one truly cares that much.
I have a co-worker who stay doing the managers and every supervisors job. Our manager makes 120k and this chick is making 40k. I kid you not our manager has been working from since late march and while this chick is playing big boss she fell behind in her own department almost costing the company clients. Learn to do the job they pay you.
Hahahahaha hahahahaha OMG that was me at work . Helping everybody but ain't no body helping me I would get home so exhausted, until one day I walked into my boss's office and I said , why is it that I feel like I'm the only one playing on the team while everyone else is sitting on the bleachers I'm done , now everytime they call my name I say ... No I'm not doing that because that's not my job. I am no longer exhausted.
For many years I was that person to help but I’ve learned. I Wholeheartedly am with you now but then they get in your yearly review (when you are not of their persuasion-Wink, Wink) or call special department meeting for those that are (meaning it doesn’t affect their paychecks) and say “WE”. Are a Team. I don’t speak French so I pay that shit no attention and if you ask I’m always busy with what I get paid to do. When “they” say there is no I in Team, I say you’re correct but I’m on an Island and on this Island I do exactly what I need to do to get off of this Island at 4pm. Thanks and have a great day on your team where it’s only a team when they need help but when I do it’s “if I get a chance to, or I don’t know how to or can you ask suzyQ......
At my last job, they “promoted” me to a new position, but this position consisted of me taking on some of the team leads work and STILL GETTING PAID like a regular worker. So what? Am I just here to make the work load easier on the team leads? NO! They need more work to match their pay. Favoritism at its finest. And pay me more for doing more! So stupid.
Doing my job plus everyone else's (without a pay increase) I wound up getting an on the job injury and eventually losing the job because I could no longer work. Stick to what they hired you for. Don't you do NOTHING outside your job description, and when you get a job make them outline your specific duties so you'll know what's yours to do and what isn't.
Amen. EXACTLY. my stuff along with stuff people don't want to do or are unwilling to learn but they still want to get paid. especially when teleworking and going in. This is a whole word....lmao
This is definitely how I be feeling! This is NOT my job! I will be doing what you hired me to do! Nothing more, some times less! 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤣🤣
It's the "some times less" for me 😂😂😂 I'm doing all the less in 2020 for mental health reasons
“Sometimes less”. 😂😂
Lol.
Wow....
Ain't that a blimp, they will do it but I feel like something better will come to you when something like that happens be encouraged sis🙏🏽
@firstborn Love. Thank you my health is more important.
God looks out for His. He restores my soul, according to King David. He remembers my good works and labor of love according to Hebrews. So, forget about them, and pray that the Most High God will remember you.
@@khalilahwilliams5942 Amen💯.... Kuddos to you Sis, I had to learn that the hard way. Like you, I was waaaaay too loyal, got so stressed and physically ill, just to get screwed over in the end. But...no more! I COME FIRST!
This literally just happened to me two days ago I work in the bakery department of a supermarket the overnight baker called out because of all of the snow I’m at home and my manager texted me “Darrin can you go in overnight to do the donuts Bernard called out because of the snow” it took everything in me to not respond “Who’s the manager here me or you?” I responded “What time is the assistant manager coming in?” He said “Her regular time I think 6” At that point I had had enough Me “Well if she doesn’t think it’s necessary for her to lose any sleep over donuts and Italian Bread why do you think I’m going to?” Him No response needless to say I no longer go out of my way to help others than don’t help themselves and don’t help me
I'm a R.N sometimes I want to let my mouth fly but I can't I'm like lort hold this mouth PLEASE and hold my foots from walking out..... Love me some EJ she always hit that nail
I file all tasks that are outside my professional scope and daily responsibilities under the "Above my pay grade file". If it don't make dollars, it don't make sense. Go find someone in the correct tax bracket to complete those additional tasks because my bank account said it's a no for me.🤷😂
Betta say that then EJ!! Nope, nothing wrong with being productive but stay in your job description! 👏🏽👏🏽
I have a coworker like that and two hours in the day she is tired a@# ish and then she spend the rest of the day complaining about being tired. Every day this happens I shake my head and roll my eyes at her.
As a recovering people pleaser, this speaks to me.
Yes! Always forever doing additional tasks-ks-ks-ks-ks-ks-ks!
This is a real thing and boy did I have to learn the hard way.
Chile, it's 10:15 am on a Friday. I just finished my breakfast, checked twitter, & watch your video. NOW I'm ready to get some work done before I get ready to go home an hour early this afternoon.
😂🤣😂🤣😎😎😜😜😩
FACTS!!! 😂🤣😂 So true!!! ROTFLMBO!
Where’s the lie? Hahaha
Can we acknowledge how beautiful Ej’s hair is! Love it! 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for guiding our FUTURE LEADERS.
You're an MVP!!! Kudos to you. Take care of you first, Sis. I had to learn that the hard way. When my day/week gets stressful, here comes the pto request for my mental health and body.
@@elenam9435 You're right! As I was talking to the baby my student was watching, so she could take a test I realized I had taken on too much!
Omg, the best thing that happened to me this year, was moving from that damn office to home permanently! I love my job now lol!
The answer is yes. Thank God left that job for good yesterday.
Yes... 👏 👏
Yep I resigned from mine in May!!
Been there, am there... It's sickening with a whole 20 cent raise. I have a BA
"Top tier medication"😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah stop being so nice, people taking you for dumb and weak, they don't appreciate it! Do yours ,period.
Preach, been me for the last 36 years of working in an office setting.
I felt this on a spiritual level 😩.
We need to talk about pay!
"Additional taskssssss!"😂😂😂
Yes! I remember these days and don't miss these days! Which is why so many of my former jobs always want me back and then wanna act right ..na, I'm ok! I thank God for learning experiences, New seasons and Business Entrepreneurship. Whew , the accuracy in this video 🗣️👏👏👏
This. Is. Me. I had to learn this lesson in addition to learning that most people will not give you the same energy.
Top tier anxiety meds! 😂 Preach 🤣🤣
When I tell you this video came RIGHT on time!!! Currently at work about to have a meltdown. 😖
I’ve powered thru days like that before....well I stopped once someone told me I get paid too much to do what I do so I dialed that back a notch 🤗
Mic drop
I don't know what is more on point EJ. It's a tie between the message and the blush 😍😍😍
When she said with your happy self?!... I flatline 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yes, the next thing you know it’s expected like it’s your job rather than appreciated.
2:19....GRRRRRRRRRRRL! Rarely does one word crack me up! It’s magical!😜🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Wow
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 absolutely! My Godmother always told me they will replace you immediately, so don't over work and end up hurting yourself.. especially if you're already underpaid
I’m Susan and it’s not my job either lol 😂
🤣🤣🤣😂😂
GIRL! Thank you! I no longer offer to help no one as they take advantage of it, the job will take advantage of you as well and YES will replace you in a heartbeat baby! I say "f ya" to all. I come in..do what I NEED to do. Do what will show as an very productive employee and clock the freak out!! These people have already shown their TRUE colors to me after 7 years. Planning to look elsewhere when all of this nonsense is over. Unless they put some more money on the table. :-)
I discovered this early in my career and made a prompt correction. If I got overwhelmed, it was from doing "my" job.
If this isn’t a message!!! I felt this in my soul!!! 💯
HONEY!! Clearly you have a camera in my office and honed in on me. When I tell you that this video is confirmation of the change of mind and behavior that I started effective TODAY. Girrrl. Thank you.
i once had a colleague who got sick for a short while and eventually passed on.
Stop speaking to me. I didn’t need this level of honesty in my life right now.
If this ain’t me Lawd! I try to help everyone and then I get overwhelmed and behind. I’m finna stop tho 🤣
I have a co-worker who stay doing the managers and every supervisors job. Our manager makes 120k and this chick is making 40k. I kid you not our manager has been working from since late march and while this chick is playing big boss she fell behind in her own department almost costing the company clients. Learn to do the job they pay you.
💯
Lady, I love your humor!
My friend/co-worker and I was just talking about this on the way home from work. EJ always on time.
Amen!!Yes Yes so guilty. And they get to stuttering about pay! You RIGHT, do YOUR job! Thank you.
Love the hair.
EJ, I LOVE you! You pegged my office perfectly, and you gave me the best start to this day, belly laughing my way to work! Thank you!!
It’s probably too early in the morning to say this but I see you on “the real” or by the grace of God your own show. God bless you sis.
Girl.. your wig game is on point..just how many do you have...lol
Right! Love the hairssss! I bet she has names for them.LOL
Thank you!!! I promise its not that many😂
Amen. EXACTLY. my stuff along with stuff people don't want to do or are unwilling to learn but they still want to get paid. especially when teleworking and going in. No one seems to help me. some times I end up crying. should not have offered to help.😡😡. ok ej I am listening. thanks for the wisdom🙏🏾❤
I feel like that at the self checkout line in a grocery store “ this not my job”
😂🤣AMEN. I'll wait in line with 5011 people in front of me before i do $elf check. It AIN'T my job!!
@@bridgetgilliam1837 how you gone charge me for bagging my own grocery 🤔🤨😳NOT HAPPENING. I guess I am right behind you at #5013
