this is so funny, i found your channel because of your jonathan strange review and i also have started locke lamora on the side. our tastes are aligned hahaha
Just became a subscriber. Just wanted to say excellent videos. Your reviews are full of energy, they give such great understanding of the books and series you're talking about, without spoiling anything, which, when you're digging into these large multi book series, that can be super hard to do. Just awesome. Love the review of the Gentleman Bastards. I think you're dead on!
I have thoughts: I purchased all 3 books at once, assuming they were a trilogy. When I found out that wasn't the case, I put them on my shelf and forgot about them. However, your description checks a lot of my boxes and gets me excited to read them. I always appreciate your honesty. In regards to this series, even though it's not a particular favorite of yours, you still reviewed it, and did so with enthusiasm! Your love of books shines through. Merphy probably likes all of the undulating water in book 2. You also have great hair, and it is particularly on point in this video!
Book 1 is amazing as a stand alone story. You don’t feel any cliffhanger at the end because there is none! You feel like most of your questions were answered.
Great review. Though I never got the vibe that Locke was creepy with Sabetha in book 3, I've nearly finished it but the main thing is he's a massive simp for her which was painful but most of that is when he's 16 and has no idea how to talk to women. When seeing them together in the present day she clearly likes him, there's a lot of playfulness and provocation from her because she actually enjoys his multi sentence overly romantic dialogue. She tells Lock _and_ Jean to leave because the Bonds Magi will hurt them over the election, it's not because she doesn't have feelings for Locke because she does.
Thank you for such a thorough overview! I don't think the series is for me based on this (especially the "romance", we have enough problems with consent already), but it was interesting to learn more about it!
The Lies of Locke Lamora is my favorite fantasy novel. I loved Red Seas Under Red Skies as well. While I didn’t adore The Republic of Thieves, by this point I’d read about Locke and Jean doing their taxes. Can’t wait for book four.
I have taken a lot of literary influence from this series. Two first books of these are in my Top 3 favourite books, and the third one might very well be in Top 5.
I love your videos and your vibe so much! Have you read the Septimus Heap books? They’re my favorite books, and I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on them!
Good review, I think I’m just going to finish the first book and treated as a standalone, especially given what happened with the whole family group dynamic halfway through the book.
I really loved the beginning of the first book. The Found Family of the group, and their heist teamwork was great. Which is why when Event I'm Not Saying Because Spoilers happened I dropped the book and never went back, sadly.
That’s kind of where I’m at, I’m going to finish the first book but I’m just going to treat it as a standalone since from what I’ve been able to piece together Scot Lynch is of the George RR Martin school of not writing, and I already miss the twins and Bug quite a bit.
Red Seas under Red Skies irritated me so much I basically stopped. I do have all three books but haven't even cracked open book three. Yep, book one is perfect. Loved it. Scott Lynch looks like me, which I found disconcerting when I saw him at Loncon.
Oh so much fun. I think you were very well balanced. I think the warning is valid and I only read the first two, so preparing myself for a creepy disappointing third book :P . Then again it is almost impossible to reach the level of the first book. And I thought book 2 was still a 5-star read (out of 5).
Didn't read all the comments here so don't know if it was mentioned. But I wanted to comment on your part about Lockes obsession of Sabetha. SPOILERS: ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------ In book 3 maybe the biggest loredump in the series so far is about Lockes true identity shared by the Bondsmagi "Patience". There she mentioned the powerful Bondsmagi that fled to Camorr. And that that guys wife was red-haired. So in the case "Patience" told the truth, Lockes obsession with Sabetha would be perfectly explained.
I absolutely love book 1 it's one of my all time favourites. Now about book 2 I personally put it on the same level although I understand why it might turn people off (it broke my heart tho more than once). Book 3 disappointed me quite a bit too. I really enjoyed the past storyline but I found the present one plainly bad and anticlimactic despite having the potential to be the best one. It's a good time to start the series as some novellas and short stories are coming out this year and maybe book 4 in due time (I hope next year?)
*Nods sagely* Merphy does indeed have amazing hair.
Btw, I've been reading - and loving - City of Brass, which I got to know through your channel. Thank you!
Amazing! Thank you for letting me know, that makes me so happy!
I love your videos. Your personality is the reason I always come back to your videos.

Definitely really liked book 1 the best! So glad I’m not alone 😂

Great video, as always! Love how your new shelves turned out
Appreciate your insights. I'll check out book 1 😊

Excellent review. I loved the first book, enjoyed the second and will never be able to scour the stink of the third book from my mind.
🤭🤭🤭 so true!
Your hair is stunning
love your videos so inspiring. you convinced me to start the First Law and Dune and I loved both
Love these videos 👌👍
I absolutely loved book one ❤ I need to get back to reading the rest of the series 😂
The Lies of Locke Lamora is my favorite fantasy novel. I loved Red Seas Under Red Skies as well. While I didn’t adore The Republic of Thieves, by this point I’d read about Locke and Jean doing their taxes. Can’t wait for book four.

Merphy! You are summoned! 😂
Just finished ASOIAF because of your vid! Now onto GB
Just started book one because of Merphy, but this review has me continue it.
I have taken a lot of literary influence from this series. Two first books of these are in my Top 3 favourite books, and the third one might very well be in Top 5.
Please do a Kingkiller chronicles video 🙏
This is my absolute favourite fantasy of the 21st century.

If its the one scene I was wrecked over, I suggest revisiting it later. The ending was good... I won't lie. I ugly cried. 😅

Get guy ritchie these books is all im gonna say. Would be a fire ass adaptation.
I would read Scott lynches grocery list at this point.
(Not my joke but a damn good one… and maybe not a joke LOL)
I still want book 4.
I check Reddit more often than is healthy hoping for good news about The Thorn of Emberlain

I agree, Lies is 9/10...but books 2-3 are like 6/10 at best.
God, this sounds like something for me but the romance and its unfinished narrative might dissuade me from it.
The romance is the worst thing of the book, if it reminds me of the romance in Kingkiller that’s not a good thing
