This series has incredible potential for a live-action adaptation. I am of the strong believe that not every series should be adapted into a different medium, but this Game of Thrones style intrigue and politics thriller about effectively mafia-clans would be able to capture many non-fantasy fans as well.

There was supposedly a series in development by Peacock, but it was later shelved. Hopefully, an HBO, Showtime or Amazon can pick it up & continue.

That was a terrific review: it made me want to start re-reading the series again!
The ending was such a punch, but it was also so poignant and perfect.
If you haven't read it yet, Jade Shards has a great short story about Shae in her youth, and that brings to light more clearly some of the reasons that brought her to leave the family.
    Anyway, immediate follow! :)

The way my TBR fell at one point I read Jade Legacy, Wisdom of Crowds, and Leviathan Falls back to back to back and I have not yet emotionally recovered.
Dig the video, new sub 🤘🏼

Finally! It's my favorite series of all time. It has one of the best characters, arcs, and family interactions i have ever read. Oh men, i cried at the end of the second and third book. So so good. Ty for exposing the saga to other readers!

Excellent review - thanks for putting it all together. Just finished the series myself yesterday - outstanding urban fantasy & probably the best fantasy series I've read since Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy. Loved the main characters, the depth of the world and the supporting cast & how things that started in the first book played out in books 2 and 3. Some really heartbreaking deaths as well - I think the last time I was really that torn up about character deaths in a book was the Red Wedding & then the Red Viper in A Storm of Swords.
Agree that Hilo is a terrific character with a lot of depth, as are Shae and Anden. The time jumps in book 3 were a bit jarring the first time it happened & I thought it took the book a chapter or two to get back to the "right" feeling again.
I know you had mentioned Espenia as Spain, but I had thought of them more as a stand in for the United States (Estados Unidos in Spanish) as Fonda Lee mentions the "slow war" that I thought as a substitute for the Cold War, and the other major power seems like the Soviet Union. Of course, this could just be my bias as an American.

This was genuinely the best, most comprehensive summary of this trilogy that I’ve found. I’ve struggled to really effectively describe it to people when recommending the books, so now I’m just going to send them this 😂

Just finished this series and i honestly had to take a break before picking up a new book. I needed time to marinate in the bitter sweet feeling of finishing such an incredible series while mourning the fact that this is the end of our time with these incredible characters 🥹 As someone who loves character driven media, these books were a delight from start to finish. Highly recommend! And I’ve been listening to the audio books now in the bg while I work around the house and because I wanted a bit more time with this family and I recommend them too!

I absolutely love your channel! Love how you break down series, it’s really helpful! You’ve convinced me to pick up plenty of series and even to NOT pick up a couple. But the main reason I’m writing this is bc I just feel like I need to say that I absolutely love every single B99 reference and clip they just make me so happy

I love this saga so much !thank you for making a video about it! To me Kekon was more like Taiwan than China...🤔 and you totally nailed the multiple angles of the world building. That's one of the reason it's so great, i've never seen a world where the ramifications of the magic and plot were so diverse and relevant. Also the character development was 👌🏻 i cried so much ready this... and the plotwists are not for shock value, they really further the plot... i could go on and on about this saga it's so good!

The final "surprise" in the last book destroyed me. Fonda Lee has the talent to create lovable and grey characters and then kick you in the face with them. So much tragedy.

My husband isn't much of a reader and certainly not a fantasy reader, but when I bought Jade City recently and told him it's a mafia-fantasy, his ears perked up 😂 we're going to read it together soon! I didn't know about the kung fu, he'll like that even more! (he does Muy Thai and BJJ) This series seems like a great mix of things I like (fantasy and family drama) and things he likes (gangsters and martial arts)

I'm not sure about this series. I don't like crime family stories or martial arts. I was lukewarm on her novella Untethered Sky. So all three novels sit on my TBR to be tried at a later date. Thanks for the overview.

Read 2/3 of the first book and found it... too droll. Wanted to like it but just couldn't get past what seemed to be obvious plotting and one-dimensional characters.
