I replace 10mm bolts with stainless and add a wider washer between them to hold shield up like you did. Excellent job. Use blue lock tight to keep them to rattle loose. Use pop rivets if stud breaks off. 👍
A new year bump!... I had been struggling with a "womping" noise while driving, it's pretty damn windy out here, and finally found this to be the problem on my 2011. I had come to the same idea as you, and then found your video! Great coverage. Heading to the hardware store in the morning!
I had to pop off my heat shield a couple days ago because of that galvanic corrosion. Thanks for the heads up that those nuts are 10mm. A word about the washers though, those are probably galvanized (zinc coated) steel and will cause the heat shield to corrode over time like the OEM nuts. A coating of aluminized tape, foil, or even soda can material between the washers and the nut would mitigate that issue. It might also be worth looking into isolating the floorboard from the heat shield in a similar fashion to prevent corrosion there as well.
I had the same exact problem with 3 of 4 was off, I just ripped the whole damn heat shield off and threw it in the trash. Muffler ain’t even all that close to the chassis to cause much heat in the cabin I think. Could be wrong but guess I find out soon with Summer coming lol
with all those different metals touching the galvanic corrosion will come back and you will have larger holes, but it may take a few years before its an issue. Also, if you break the studs off you can use a JB weld or similar adhesive/bond to fasten a new bolt on without doing a proper weld.
