  • One Of Bach's best.
    The Cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach (German: Bachkantaten) consist of at least 209 surviving works.
    As far as is known, Johann Sebastian Bach's earliest surviving cantatas date from 1707, the year he moved to Mühlhausen (although he may have begun composing them at his previous post at Arnstadt). Most of Bach's cantatas date from his first years as Thomaskantor (director of church music in Leipzig), a position which he took up in 1723. Working especially at the Thomaskirche and the Nikolaikirche, it was part of his job to perform a church cantata every Sunday and Holiday, conducting soloists, the Thomanerchor, and orchestra as part of the church service. In his first years in Leipzig, starting after Trinity of 1723, it was not unusual for him to compose a new work every week.[1] Works from three annual cycles of cantatas for the liturgical calendar have survived. These relate to the readings prescribed by the Lutheran liturgy for the specific occasion. He composed his last cantata probably in 1745.
    In addition to the church cantatas, Bach composed sacred cantatas for functions like weddings or Ratswahl (the inauguration of a new town council), music for academic functions of the University of Leipzig at the Paulinerkirche, and secular cantatas for anniversaries and entertainment in nobility and society, some of them Glückwunschkantaten (congratulatory cantatas) and Huldigungskantaten (homage cantatas).
    His cantatas usually require four soloists and a four-part choir, but he also wrote solo cantatas for typically one soloist and dialogue cantatas for two singers. The words for many cantatas combine Bible quotes, contemporary poetry, and chorale, but he also composed a cycle of chorale cantatas based exclusively on one chorale.

      "... Hard to explain what I mean ..." ; No, it obviously isn't - every word was as crystal clear (to me) as that incredible music that Bach wrote (in his own manuscript - for all those instruments & vocalists) and also rewrote (or had copied by his students) so it could be rehearsed and performed in public to huge worshiping congregation audiences - probably the weekend after it was first written ! Thank God & Bach that we still have hugely talented performers that eagerly seek out his music and keep it alive for us three hundred years later. It makes me weep for joy.

He also wrote a number of particularly great concerti grossi for one or more harpsichords, strings and continuo, including his transcription of what I call the Vivaldi B-minor, his Op 3, 10, for four violins, strings and continuo, in which Bach substituted four harpsichords for the solo violins

      what's wild is that he wasn't even popular. In fact, his chorale-preludes on organ were often complained about because they were "too complicated" and "obscured" the melody or cantus firmus. So even though he was moderately popular among musicians, it wasn't until like... a century after his death that he got the recognition he deserved, when Mendelssohn "revived" his music in concerts, when complex counterpoint was a lot more popular in the Romantic era.

    This collection of work by the Netherlands Bach Society has been such a glorious find! I just wish I new German. I discovered Bach--or Bach discovered me--when I was an amateur chorus singer in the Oberlin Musical Union at Oberlin College when I was a student there with no idea yet that I was heading to a theological education and pastoral career. It was the Christmas Oratorio, two Passion, and the B Minor Mass that awakened me, a life-long church goer with my family, to the possibility that God and "this Christian thing" might be real. Bach obviously knew it was! I wish I knew more about how it came to be so powerfully real for him.

    I’m my opinion this is Bachs best Cantata. What makes it is the great continuo and strict counterpoint which demonstrates heavily to anyone new to Baroque music, what polyphony is all about. It’s that pleasing to the ear that one has to repeat the video multiple times before sleeping.
    And Sato is amazing

    • @johnervin8033
      @johnervin8033 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's how I hear it too. I (we) had the great privilege of singing the Bach B Minor Mass under the baton of Christoph von Dohnanyi, and he told us in dress rehearsal, we are going to do this "Old School" or what they may now call "Old Fashion" Bach. But that's how he heard it, and that has always been my ear for it: such as Otto Klemperer with Christa Ludwig et al., and the Philharmonia recordings. Grand, elegant, richly imagined and cathedral-like in amplitude. If that was good enough for Otto K, it's good enough for John E. Nothing in the current recordings, of all those that I've heard, at least, stands up in spiritual impact and grandeur to so many of the mid-20th century interpretations/recordings, and Bach deserves that "scope" to be heard for all that he is. Like another Klemperer collaborator, George Malcolm on keyboards and his "Angel" recordings.

    • @davidcallahan2832

      @@johnervin8033 I would agree that the trend among many interpretations of Bach and other baroque composers is to overcompensate for past sins. The music that emerges is thin, fleet, and idiosyncratic. I hope that by revisiting the versions you mention as well as the breakthrough interpretations of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, which have to my ear withstood the test of time, future interpreters will be better able to hop up into saddle without ending up on the other side of the horse.

    • @johnervin8033

      David Callahan, nicely said.
      Yes, that is close to my perspective. I have indeed heard some things in the past quarter century that have some of the old school grandeur, but it has notably and glaringly thinned.
      I think Beethoven's may be applied, to strike or sing a wrong note is insignificant, but to play without passion is inexcusable.
      Lorca wrote a great essay about that, duende.
      CvD also added in our dress rehearsal, "Don't sing the holy parts of his Mass bloodlessly. Bach had, what, 20 children?"
      And then came the downbeat for the Credo.
      Word 2 Wise.
      Heifetz and Friedman did a 50s duet for the Bach double violin. That was an example of greatness marred somewhat by too much "rubato" etc. I grew up with that as one of my Gospel readings.
      It wasn't til I heard one that was incandescently passionate but restrained that I realized that Jascha had gone too far!

    shields the city and the palaces,

    to reveal Your goodness to us;
    so shall
    our city and our land,
    full of Your honor,
    praise You with offerings and with thanks,
    and all the people shall say:
    - Amen! -

    Hallelujah, power and might
    be the names of the Most High!
    8. Chorale
    Glory, and praise with honor
    be to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
    He will increase in us
    what He has promised us out of grace,
    so that we trust fast in Him,
    abandon ourselves completely to Him,
    rely on Him within our hearts,
    so that our heart, will, and mind
    should depend on him comfortingly;
    therefore we sing at this time:
