  • A short tutorial on painting 1/1200th scale ships from Ark Royal Miniatures for use with the Mad for War rules. This is a basic tutorial, mainly using contrast paints, for a speedy and simple finish. If you want to get reasonable-looking ships on the game table quickly, this is one of the ways to do it.

Great video Lee and thanks for the generous comments about the range and the rules. Now, get down into that Thames Estuary and sink some Dutchies!

I'm looking forward to the whole group getting together to base the models properly. I'll post some pictures when they are fully complete.

Thanks Big Lee! The ships look good. I am contemplating getting into painting sailing ships and wargaming in the age of sail.

Well I can certainly recommend the Ark Royal ships. I haven't had to clean any flash or mould lines of them at all. The only thing I did was use a hand drill to make the mast holes a little deeper prior to gluing the masts on.

I have to see how the shipping is to the US. That unfortunately is an issue ordering stuff from the UK/Europe. That shipping cost gets rather high. The ships look like a really good product that is for sure. @@MiniatureAdventuresTV

I cringed when the Skeleton Horde paint pot wobbled a bit! Just dumped one the other day 😢 Thanks for the video, this seems like it would be also useful for 1/2400 scale which I am considering for the even easier-ness of building two fleets.

Nice and quick and ready to set sail. This level of painting suits this scale, which is a pretty small representation of massive ships. On mine I might add a single line of rigging running from bow to stern across the tops of the masts, just to suggest it’s there and to help stabilize the soft metal masts I’ve got. Otherwise if someone expects to see more rigging, remember rope was significantly thinner than the men and we don’t usually expect to see any crew fully modeled either.

Well said! If I can find suitable 'rope' the only rigging I would attempt to do is what you suggested. Anything more would likely drive me nuts.

Have not started my Mad for war project yet, been trying to clear some of my paint tray first. Ships are looking good though, very inspiring. I am also tempted by the Renaissance ships they do.

My painting technique for these is very basic, but I wanted to show just how easy they could be. As I say in the video, painting these ships is as hard or as easy as you want it to be.

Done my first ship, seven more to go. Painted up prity quick, in fact it took more time to pepare (fit together). Wont be long before I get a second fleet. thanks for the video.

I'll give it a go. Not sure when that will be (I'm away for most of the end of September) but I'll try to do it sooner rather than later.

They are without a doubt the smallest scale models I have ever worked on. But the quality of the sculpts, and the simplicity of assembly make these really easy to paint. A lot more so than any of us expected.
