Converting an ATLAS EDITIONS 1/1200 scale full hull model of the RMS Titanic to a waterline model

  • This is my first attempt to convert a newly released ATLAS EDITIONS 1/1200 scale model of the RMS Titanic from the full hull edition to a waterline model by removing the lower part of the hull and the keel. It is also my first ever video and upload so there is nothing fancy. If you re new to the scale it is about 1 inch to 100 feet.
The superstructure is plastic but the hull is metal. I am not a professional modeler, just a guy who can't really afford to pay the full current prices of waterline models for the number that I want to collect. I buy at the market rate any special models that I want for my collection when they come available e.g the original Oriana or Windsor Castle. The Oriana is one of the models that ATLAS plan to release.
I used an ordinary engineers vice to hold the model using cloth and bubble wrap to protect it. An alternative is to screw the wooden base onto a small block of wood and hold that in the vice, assuming you don't have a modeling vice.
Take a little time to create a good groove in your cut so that when you change to a more effective cutting disc the disc will stay in the groove far easier and stay straighter. You may also want to put two or three layers of masking tape on when you mark out the waterline as this will also guide the cutter.
Take care to ensure that you start cutting midships where the metal is flat as it becomes a little harder as you move to the bow and the stern where the metal is shaped. By the time you get to the bow and the stern you will be confident in your ability to cut straight. I will buy a more powerful Dremel type drill to speed the process up now that I have done it once. It took me about 3 hours I think to cut the hull.
I think that to make the model look better you need to repaint some of the model e.g. the masts because they are too yellow and the deck also needs reviewing. Given the price of about £15.00 each I think they are excellent, there will be over 20 models in this series so that me done for life! If you want to obtain the model of the Titanic just type in ATLAS EDITIONS on the internet and it is currently £1.99 as an opening offer which is a snip. Don't worry if you want to cancel all the collection after that, I did it with their bombers collection and there were no issues at all for me.

I am attempting to waterline the Lusitania model and it is one heck of a mission. My cutting disks are battling to get through the metal and I have made more progress with a hacksaw than I have with the disks. Those hulls are thick though and the paintwork is hanging in there too. I am impressed!

Then what happens if you unscrew the model will the keel fall out? Or what?

Could you just confirm the Dremel cutting disc fits the little rotary tool you're using.
And how did you cut the threads in the centre of the hull that the two screws screw into to get the bottom piece to separate? Did the Dremel cutter have the radius to squeeze in far enough to reach them?

Perfect timing! I'm going to try to do the same to some of the AE warships and have been wondering how to go about it. You've pretty much solved that for me.
Your Titanic looks really fantastic; why AE don't make their ships so they could be displayed either full hull or waterline is one of those great unsolved mysterious.
Any chance you could let me know a little more about that cheap little cutting tool you got on the internet? Dremel's are just way too expensive for all I'll use one for.
Now you've taken the first big step into producing TH-cam videos, maybe you'll consider another one showing you actually doing the cutting? Apart from the fact I'm not 100% sure where to put the vice, it would be good to see someone who knows what they're doing in action.
I'd looked at the AE liner range but hadn't really thought of buying it, but after watching this, I most likely will now.

I've come up with a better solution without cutting the model and it looks great. I bought polystyrene tiles, cut out the shape of the hull and sat the full hull model in that. Paint it a few times, there are plenty of tutorials that show you how to make a realistic sea. Buy clear sealant for about £1.00, spread it on after you have painted the sea on and it dries clear. You can add a bow wave in the same way. Its much easier and cheaper and you don't damage the model.

Most likely on the RMtoys website, or eBay.
I’m not sure if they make them anymore (eBay) but if they do, it’ll be on RMtoys (they seem to distribute Atlas Editions models)

You can buy them for peanuts... £1.99 from Atlas Editions (look up their website) as an introductory offer to their range of 1/1250 scale liners.
