Hi Merv, lots of great information in this video. The color photos you have really makes it easy to see how the colors changed over the years. Thanks for sharing. Jeff

I agree 100%! I have moved to buying inexpensive HO locomotives stripping and repainting in not prototypical paint schemes, because I want to. If I’m happy with outcome I’m good to go! Has been nice cutting the build portion out of modeling for a bit and focusing in painting and decals with some light weathering. Awesome pics and great info! Wonderful work on your ships!! Thanks for the video! Ferrox! Great Northern and Burlington Northern look to have painted a black version in the noses of their as I imagine with their sloped shape they could be slippery! Cool info! Great work one the new superstructure painting!

Very interesting video. I’m close to starting a 1/200 Arizona build. I have purchased 5-S blue for the hull and lower superstructure but I see you have done yours in 5-D Dark Gray. I did a bunch of reading and couldn’t find anything conclusive so decided to go with what I thought looked best. Am I totally off base with the 5-S blue? Even crew member accounts are different.

Thank you Albert for watching and thank you for commenting. This is a very hot topic. However I have discussed different color schemes with people who are noted experts in the area of ships camouflage. These are the guys who write most of the books. There is sufficient evidence to show that the Arizona was painted in the 5S blue shortly before the attack. Now there is some debate as to how far up the ship they actually got finished. Some experts debate that the upper Works were still in dark gray While others claim that the ship had been completely repainted by December 6th. When I did most of my models many years ago, the research just had not been done so everything was pretty much in grey 5D as far as we knew. I have recently redone a mini hobby Arizona that I have painted in 5 s. I do have a resin Arizona that I am super detailing hopefully we'll have that done in a few years. And I hope I have some better answers as to exactly how much 5S was on the ship. But no matter what you paint it it should be fun and I'm sure you will enjoy it. Always remember it's your model, do it the way you want.

We had a few Arizona survivors that lived in the area. In an interview with one of them when he was still alive several years ago, he remembers on the last training they were on just days before the attack, he was tasked with painting one of the boat cranes in the 5S blue.

@@maddogmerv thank you for the detailed response. I have my 5-S paint in hand and think it will look good in blue. The safe bet for accuracy is the 5-D for most of late 1941. I think I’ll pick up some 5-D and sample both of them and just see what I like best. As you say it’s all about the fun of the hobby. As a history buff it will always be in the back of my mind wether it’s correct or not. Either way it is a beautiful ship and will be an honor to have in my collection. Especially since tomorrow is December 7th. Thanks again for taking the time to respond and for your great videos. I always learn from them.

There is a video I did last year sometime that shows a picture of the Arizona in November and you can plainly see the contrast in the color between the hall and the upper Works which had not been painted yet. I will include that photo when I do my next piece on the arizona. I would go ahead and use the 5S on the entire upper works except for the very top which was still in 5l. Don't forget to paint the tops of turret one two and four in the red color. If you check out the video I did on the Vestal today you will see some of the pictures that I took of my model where it looks like it is gray and then there is another picture I took of it where it definitely looks blue. That is because in some of my office I have full-spectrum lighting and in other areas I do not. Very interesting how light is affected on these different colors.
