I had forgotten how much I enjoy watching you paint! Your commentary throughout is informative and inspiring. Great little landscape. Thank you so much!😊
I left the Cape in 1972. I try to work out where you are from your demos. I started painting seriously in my 60’s ie started to get serious about learning. Your teaching inspires me - thank you Malcolm!
Haven’t painted since I was a kid and never really learned how to paint in an impressionist style. Had a crack at this tutorial this afternoon and am extremely pleased with the results- wish I could share them with you! Extremely effective teaching, thank you so much!
This video was very helpful. I am an elderly (85 yr old) beginning painter who was told by my 5th grade art teacher that I would never be an artist. However, after being homebound for almost two years, I took out a set of paints my daughter had given to me some time ago. The long and short is that paintings just emerged and I've been invited to display my work in a local gallery. I've struggled with some inconsistency in my work; your video is exactly what I needed. The process you outlined is amaaing and almost seemed like it was directed at me personally. Thank you so much and I will be a fan of your work nd teaching!
I love the way you paint, and it inspires me to move ahead and try painting with such gorgeous colours. It’s changing my whole view of ways to put colors together. Thank you so much for your videos.
Stunning work, Malcolm. I am a novice painter and watched tons of video lessons; I think your style of painting inspires me a lot. Totally obsessed with it. Thank you for great lessons.
I love watching these tutorials and your voice is even relaxing. I am just a beginner but am going to try these loose paintings. You make it look easy but you definitely professional helping us learn something that brings joy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this painting. It has such a joyfulness as the colours play together. Thank you for explaining your thought process as you paint too. So much to learn 😊, I look forward to watching this again.
It's always amazing how you seem to so effortlessly transform a rather unremarkable photo into a gorgeous painting. I'm just getting into painting and my attempts at this kind of loose, impressionistic style are pretty medicore but I hope to be able to achieve something like this with practice eventually. Thank you for all these videos!
Thanku Malcolm, your demonstration are fabulous and i learn so much watching them. Time to start painting your ideas. Not very confident painting in a loose style, so must continue to practice.
Another excellent demonstration. Among many, you are one of the few who really bring the techniques and expression together in a way that is enjoyable, informative and instructive: even I can follow along. I must get back to the impasto course. Thanks for excellent channel.
Lovely painting. Inspirational, as always. Thank you Malcolm. I have been unable to paint for a couple of months, but look forward to starting again in June, and your tutorials are just what I need.
Many thanks Malcolm. I’ve finally started to paint simplifying everything, darks and shadows then middle values and then lights. Also paying more attention to shapes which makes things easier and freer. Great tip to clean off brush when painting over wet paint. Great video. If possible I would like to see you painting water in the same kind of way?
You invite suggestions for future videos. I would like to see other genres than landscape, such as urban or city scapes, or portraits, or still lifes. I am sure your methods will apply to those genres as well.
Wonderful and inspiring as always. Thanks. Have you done any Cityscapes, with cars, movement or similar? Living in a city we experience more of these on day to day and your experience would be a great guide.
Love this demo Malcolm ! I have a question for you, what must I do if I want the tree on the left to be the focal point? I have a sketch of an olive tree which I want to stand out. Thx
Biggest tip is to move it into the focal area in the rule of thirds. Use strong light and shadow to help the trunk stand out against the light. That should make a good start.
Hello, I've just discovered your channel and am quite enjoying this video! I also use the Arches oil paper. What is the best support for it when framing the piece? Is it safe to use heavy cardboard? Thanks!😊
Yes you can use strong card. Better to use MDF or Masonite if you can get it sized correctly. You can even matte and frame behind glass for a different look.
My first layer of paint, painting in the horizon line and shadows etc., is always so thick. I always have to thin it with linseed oil to make it look fluid like yours does. Is this because I haven’t primed the canvas with a thin layer of paint?( so my paint doesn’t soak into the canvas) or is it my paint?
It's the paint-prepare the piles of paint a little before you start. Use a painting knife and work in two to four drops of linseed oil to get your paint nice and soft. It's quite therapeutic, too 😊 Also, use a long flat bristle brush. It makes moving the paint much easier.
I am a beginning painter too, and I thought the loose style is simple and easy so I would like to paint this way, but people told me this still needs some basic painting skills, so I should focus on learning some basic painting skills first before the loose style. Is this true? Do i have to learn some basic (realistic way) before the loose style? Thanks for the tutorials.
You make it look so easy but I can see the years of experience shining in the beautiful painting
Thank you so much 😀

Yes, definitely.

Yes there are fundamentals to learn. But not realism per se. More about values, composition, color, drawing basics too. Then brushwork techniques.
