@SuperCarlinBrothers If you both are into Werewolf and Vampire mythos, then I highly recommend the Underworld film series. Specifically, the first three installments: "Underworld (2003), Underworld: Evolution (2006), and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)." *WARNING:* All three films (including all the movies after them) are R-rated. But, if you're not interested in sitting through all three films, and perhaps, are only into the franchise's lore, here's a link to a video I came across years ago that will give you the basic rundown: th-cam.com/video/DxO3jFWWE48/w-d-xo.html (The Mythology In The Underworld Movies Explained)
Same here, was thinking this while listening to the podcast too Stems from "watching the football (game)" we just dropped the "game" over time so we'd say "watching the football"
I don’t think enough context is given to Sirius in most of these discussions. Does he deserve to be scathed? Yes. But he grew up in an abusive household, which causes deep psychological issues. He runs away at 16. The wizarding world is at war where he’s an active soldier for Dumbledore. So let’s add some PTSD to that childhood trauma. Then his best friend is killed. He is betrayed by his other best friend. Then he spends the next 12 years in a prison that sucks all happiness from him. Let’s give him depression now. Then he escapes from prison, spends his time on the run until he goes back to the abusive house he grew up in. Locked up like that is going to only exacerbate his depression and PTSD and all the issues. Why do people think this poor guy would be a well-adjusted human and should be a good parental figure to a traumatized child??? Sirius needs a hug and some serious psychological treatment.
Everything you said was true, BUT! He abandons Harry's and lets Hagrid take him, Sirius's responsibility is Harry! Not revenge! He should have told Hagrid to fk off and who cares what Dumbledore said, He (Sirius) is Harry's parent now, but he put himself first, he also broke out of Azkaban for the same reason, revenge not for Harry.
@@MRDEREVKO baby Harry was indeed the only thing that would have stopped Sirius from going for revenge. He would have taken Harry, if it hadn't been for Dumbledore's orders. And he doesn't seem to follow orders from Dumbledore anymore does he? Also, the reason why he broke out of Azkaban is to protect harry not revenge. He would have gone after Peter Pettigrew the rat form then, not try to save the kids from Lupin werewolf form.
@@vinaya-qp1bx True. He didn't try to escape from Azkaban until he discovered that Pettigrew was at Hogwarts, perfectly situated to attack Harry if he heard Voldemort was coming back.
11:20 At the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, Remus says goodbye to Harry with the following: "It has been a real pleasure teaching you. I feel sure we'll meet again some time." This isn't really inviting Harry to ask him for advice in the future. Sirius' letter, on the other hand, says "If you ever need me, send word."
The "perfect bluff" -- substitutuing Peter for Sirius -- is much misunderstood. It really was a good idea, that is, it would have been a GREAT idea had Peter been worthy of trust. Here's why. Sirius believes that Remus might be the traitor. Remus would totally expect Sirius to be the Secret Keeper (SK), so Sirius expected to be attacked, tortured, and ultimately killed. But he wouldn't give up the secret... in fact, he wouldn't be ABLE to, because he wouldn't be the SK. But we all know that the Fidelius charm won't allow the SK to give up the information under duress, so Sirius knew that Voldemort wouldn't expect to get the information out of him; Voldy was going to kill him **to dilute the secret**! Remember ... everyone who was told the secret by the SK becomes an SK, and the intensity of the protection is thus weakened. But by NOT being the SK, Sirius was going to use his own disappearance/death as a belwether... warning Dumbledore, Lily, and James that the Dark Lord was striking, but at the same time, not putting them any more at risk. It WAS, in fact, the perfect bluff. Except.... except for Peter being, well, a rat. BTW... you keep insisting that Sirius couldn't have visited Lily and James because of the Fidelius. But of course he could have. Peter obviously told Bathilda Bagshot the secret; there's every reason to expect that Peter also told Sirius the secret before, well, also telling it to , well, nevermind. But the point is that the Fidelius charm does permit visitors!
I don't agree that it would have been a good idea if Peter had been loyal. After all, Sirius knew who the real secret keeper was .... so anything Voldy could do to Sirius to get him to betray the Potters (or get im to weaken the protection) he could do to make Sirius disclose the true secret keeper .... which means Peter is the one who would be forced to weaken the protection. IMO, there are only two ways the switch could work under your theory. One is making Dumbledore the secret keeper ... if Sirius had disclosed that name as the true keeper, Voldy couldn't have gotten to Dumbledore to force him to do anything. The other is having James pick a new secret keeper and not letting Sirius know who it was.
I think your take on Sirius using the phrase 'the quidditch' is a British English vs American English thing. As an Australian, it is completely reasonable to say that you are 'going to the cricket' or 'watching the footy' to describe watching sports live or on TV. This is particularly true of traditionally British sports.
Even as an American myself, "coming here to watch the football" sounds perfectly natural to me. "Watching football" without the definite article sounds like you're just watching some football being played or another; "watching the football" sounds like there is some specific football being played and you are watching it. Compare also "listening to music" vs "listening to the music"; in the former, you might be listening to any music at all, while in the latter, there's some specific music that you are listening to. Say if there were a concert hall and you could hear the music played therein from outside for free; you might hang out around there to listen to the music, that which is coming from the concert hall. But you could hang out just any place and listen to music, no "the" just any old music, from your phone or whatever.
The mirror is 1000% Harry’s fault. He said when he got it he would never use no matter what and refused to even open. Sirius couldn’t tell him what it was in front of Molly
@ so his solution was to break in to Umbridge’s office to talk to the most wanted man instead of open the package that Sirius said this would make it so you could communicate with me
On the issue of the Secret Keeper switch: That was actually a _really_ good idea, if not for the fact of Peter's betrayal. Because Sirius is the VERY obvious choice for Secret Keeper, and while sure, he would never have told them the secret, he can still die. And when a Secret Keeper dies, the secret loses a LOT of its protection. The one thing we know for sure is that anyone who knows at the time of Sirius's death, which would be ALL of the Marauders, are now able to share the secret with anyone they wish. Which means whoever the spy is 100% has access now, without Sirius ever betraying anyone. But with his bait-and-switch tactic, even after they get ahold of, question, and then dispose of Sirius, they're still locked out until they get to Peter, who's very likely the last one on their list. The only way that plan could possibly have gone wrong is if Peter himself had been the spy, and well....whoops. In all other cases, though, it's the optimal strategy.
But there isn’t anything that says you can’t cast the spell again so dumbledore then could’ve stepped in and taken them away with himself as secret keeper once Sirius died. No matter what the plan would’ve broken with whoever was the secret keeper unless it were James, Lily or Dumbledore.
Plus, for all we know, the charm may not be infallible. Who's to say Voldemort doesn't have ways of breaking spell? They don't know the limitations of Dark magic,it's safer if Voldy can't get the Secretkeeper in the first place
@@ericksandoval8276 I definitely agree that those three are far better options than anyone else. I can only assume that something unspecified in the rules prevents James or Lily from being it, since they're who it's protecting, but surely there's no such restriction for Dumbledore... The real answer to all this is that the author is bad at thinking these things through. It's a trend I've noticed, where any time the characters need to get INTO trouble, the methods for the plot to accomplish it are often sloppy and full of issues. At least she did a better job of getting them out of it again. Can't claim it's perfect, but it has a lot more care and thought put in than the reverse.
I think optimal strategy would be also hiding the identity of the secret keeper with a second layer of Fidelius charm i.e. Have Dumbledore be the secret keeper to Peter being the secret keeper for the Potters and not Sirius This way it wouldn't matter at all if anyone is the Spy, because even the Spy couldn't share the secret that they're the secret keeper for the Potters Which would make the Fidelius charm much more powerful But I do think that James Potter would have seen this layer of protection against his closest friends being a spy as a slap in the face
Speaking as a Brit, Sirius saying “the Quidditch” has never felt weird. I found it strange when you guys picked up on it on TTGD. We often refer to sports matches like that - “are you watching the football tonight?” or “I went to the cricket yesterday”. I never thought it would sound strange to American ears! I think we add “the” before the sport when referring to a specific game, and remove it when referring to the sport generally. Eg: “I play football” versus “I went to the football” as you’re omitting the word “game” at the end. Hope that makes sense!
Fun fact (or maybe not): Daniel Radcliffe's reaction to Sirius dying was so strong that not only did they mute it, which makes it even more powerful, but it actually made Emma Watson, Bonnie Wright and Helena Bonham Carter cry on set.
Y'all keep banging on about Crookshanks ordering the Firebolt.😂 It's simple Crookshanks was basically acting as an owl to take the order for the Firebolt to the owl office in Hogsmeade with a note saying who to send it to. The store then takes the order and receipt to Gringotts with Sirius's authorization to take the gold out of his vault. Then the broom is shipped to where the order says to. Hope this helps.
Ah, my poor Sirius. His maturity level was stunted so early, and he comes out of Azkaban at once so much older and simultaneously still the impulsive 20 something with no real control over his impulsivity. Heart.
Personally I cut Sirius a lot of slack given he lost all of his friends when he was 22 and then spent 12 years in jail. He may not be as emotionally mature or responsible as Harry needs him to be but he is obviously trying to be a supportive force in Harry's life to the best of his abilities💜
Almost everyone is a bad communicator in the Harry Potter series! The one you would expect to be the best is one of the worst… Hermoine! If people would just say what they mean and get to the point immediately, so many issues could have been solved quickly! Hermoine never listens to anyone whose opinion doesn’t match hers. If she would listen to Harry more often, they could have avoided so many problems!
I mean, he was in jail for 12 years, alone with dementors and mortifagi. It would amaze me if he was socially proficient after such trauma and such a quarantine. And such dementors. Prison dehumanizes and he doesn't have the best means to recover later, being imprisoned at his home up until his death. Yes, he was at times with his friends and allies, which was a change, but he was ""free"" 2 years prior to his death. It's not enough to recover from what he suffered.
I've always thought Sirius is a total bad-a, but also a completely rash and petulant child who kind of waltzed into his own demise. At least Harry seems to have learned some lessons along the way.
I mean, he was a 22 yo when he entered prison, he was there for 12 years and, after escaping and being in the forest for 1 year more, he was forced to be at his family's place for his last 2 years. It's not exactly the best environment to healthily mature.
It never occurred to me how absurd it is to presume sirius betrayed the potters to be sure harry was killed, but then gives hagrid the motorcycle to ensure harry is safe.
I never really dwelt on the absurdity of the most wanted wizard in the world being able to just casually send mail into Hogwarts. And they pretty explicitly don't inspect until after Harry's already received it. Yeah, there really is nothing safe about the place lol
"Nice one, James". As Sirius had been in prison since the death of James, and when he broke out was confronted with someone who looked exactly like James, the psychology of the moment would have been interesting to read... Though, we didn't miss out on that relationship Sirius/Harry/James muddle, so it's not a big bother that that line wasn't there. Great moment in the film
Video idea for the winter: What if... Elsa did give her blessing to Anna and Hans to get married? Maybe to give her a chance at happiness? Would he have turned out to be the villain we know him to be or maybe would his character arc change? Would Elsas powers be revealed when he stages "an accident" to become king? It could go so many ways, but I love your Harry Potter What if?'s, so as I listened to the Frozen CD with my kids for the 100th time, I wondered if Hans could have not become the villain in this eternal winter storm that unfolded if he had married Anna and actually experienced family... or if he would have just been an even worse villain..? Maybe you'll write a video about it one day :) Love your vids, all the best from Germany, Annemarie
I think Sirius is one of the most tragic characters in HP-Series. He was framed for murdering his best friends, locked up in prison for 12 years, just to live in hiding for 2-3 years after that and die. Not a nice life, if you ask me....
A possible reason Sirius Black didn't send Harry a letter early on could be due to his fear for Harry's safety. Given the complex and dangerous circumstances surrounding Harry’s life, particularly with the threat of Voldemort's followers, Sirius might have been worried that any communication from him could be intercepted by the wrong people. If Harry had received a letter from Sirius, there was a real risk that it could have been discovered by someone working for the Dark Lord, such as Severus Snape or other supporters of Voldemort, which could have led to dire consequences for both Harry and Sirius. Sirius was also a fugitive at the time, having been wrongfully accused of betraying Harry’s parents, and was in hiding. Reaching out too directly could have exposed his location and intentions, putting both himself and Harry in even more danger. In addition, Sirius might have hoped to meet Harry in person, rather than risk complicating matters with a potentially dangerous letter that might not even reach him safely. Furthermore, Sirius likely wanted to protect Harry from the full truth until the time was right. Explaining everything in a letter could have been overwhelming for Harry, especially considering the trauma and emotional weight that came with learning about the events surrounding his parents' deaths and the true identity of his godfather. By waiting, he could prepare Harry for the truth in a safer, more controlled manner.
I know this wasn't the canon reason. But suddenly it makes sense to me that perhaps Sirius was encouraged to swap with Peter not because they thought Peter would be better as a secret keeper, but they were counting on Peter being naturally cowardly to keep out of danger/stay in hiding as opposed to Sirius who as Secret Keeper I don't think would have run when he should have. Switching to Peter may have been a gambit to keep Sirius from gaining any more heat that would have likely resulted in getting himself killed.
But Sirius was also in hiding when all that was happening. It was implied from Lilly's letter to him in DH about his first broomstick. Pretty much nothing would stop him from going to his godsons 1st birthday unless it's a safety issue.
@shayjensen7133 I agree, unless it was a safety issue, for the Potters. I think we've seen plenty of evidence to suggest that if Sirius thought only his own life was at risk, he would probably do it anyway. And though this was a post Askaban comment, the way he says that he would have died for his friends suggests a idea that he would have even been proud of or been excited by the idea of being a martyr for the friendship. I even theorize that the reason Sirius is in Gryffindor and not Hufflepuff is that he desired to be so diametrically opposed to his family ways that he actively tried to emulate what he perceived as the exact opposite behavior, to an extremist extent.
I personally love flawed good guys so much more over pure good guys. no offense to Lily or Cedric but flawed good guys are like most of us in the real world. We have our moments of foolishness, stubbornness, greed, wrath, and other bad moments but for the most part we usually strive to do the right thing and thus I feel a deeper connection with the Siriuses of stories than I do other types
I feel it's heavily implied that Sirius is actually really clever. He's just inexperienced and so makes some emotional decisions sometimes. Especially around James, who was sort of his weakness. When James is involved in sny way, Sirius loses his cool. And that might make sense. See, to Sirius, James was freedom incarnate. A source "forget the rules, just be us!" A message that would have been important to him given his home life. And given Sirius' commitment to James, I always thought that Sirius was gay for James.. but never told him. It explains all his actions. Even the break down in front of Peter and his fervour about avenging James. (Both from Snape and Peter) It would then also explain his attachment to Harry, why he can't express himself well around others and how his impulsive nature rules out later. The man has been incarcerated so long that it's like he got warped into a bad future timeline. All he can think about is holding on to a past that isn't his anymore. In a weird twist of fate, he and Snape are more alike than either want to admit. They are both pining for a loved one they can't let go of. Snape had Lilly.. Sirius had James. The difference is that Sirus supported James when he chose Lilly. But the pain of losing him to Peter, a fellow member of his choosen family, it was too great. He broke a little that day, as trauma from his actual home came flooding back. His madness kept him alive after.. although he likely would have recovered in time. After all, Sirius is more adaptive than Snape when it comes to what James would've wanted. With Harry there to give him hope he might've moved on. But he never got the chance.
Risky behavior is only a rush when you're coming from a relatively safe/privileged background. Serious is my favorite character, but, in a lot of ways, he's as emotionally stunted as Snape.
Sure, but he did spend 12 years being tortured psychologically. Even longer if you could his upbringing before he left home. He was bound to be a little messed up.
Heres a video idea: What if James had never saved Snape? By this ofc i mean the prank that almost killed snape and outed Remus as a werewolf to Snape. I'm curious of how much it wouod effect the plot and how different the universe would be
Listening to you talk on Sirius's bad communication skills made me think it was a result of losing his best friends and being locked up in Azkhban in the shape of a dog, all pent up seeing peter in the paper, could be cause for a break in his circuitry. Which I have now added to my Harry Potter fan fav theory because I truly imagine apart from sometime bullier of Snape to having been quite charming, having a way with words!
There's also the little incident where he tried to get Snape mauled by one of his best friends. I'm sure Remus' mental health would have been just peachy if that had been successful.
God right?? To Sirius it was just a "prank" to mess with Snape, but if James hadn't intervened, Lupin could have killed him, or even bit him and end up turning him into a werewolf; either way, Lupin would carry that guilt with him for the rest of his life and hate himself even more than he already does. And I don't think Sirius ever considered that or even felt guilty about it to the very end of his life, despite knowing how horrible Lupin feels about being a werewolf, and being very well aware Lupin would likely never wish that upon anyone. And Lupin was too grateful for having friends who stand with him despite being a werewolf to ever confront them about anything and risk ruin their friendship.
13:14 nah that's just common phrasing here. People will just say "you watching the footie?" Or "you see the match last night" because there's no need to say "Oh did you watch the football match between team a and team b"
Yeah, "the match" or "the game" is common phrasing in America, but it sounds really weird to us to shorten it to the adjective and drop the noun entirely. Saying "the football" sounds, to us, like you are talking about the ball itself.
@@SgtSupaman but in Britain it is absolutely normal to talk about "watching the football", so it sounds absolutely normal for Sirius to refer to "the quidditch"
I feel like more attention should have been given to his treatment of Kreacher, considering it was him who said “You can tell a lot about a man by how he treats his inferiors.”
@Sebastian-lw5qb of course not, but like any young person it definitely affects his character/opinion of Harry, who is our main character after all. He doesn't do a single kind thing for Harry until Harry tells him about the dragons, and even after that his actions are basically just motivated on kinda paying back Harry for his generosity
In England we say ‘the football" and "the tennis", in fact the more into it you are, the more likely you might say THE football or THE tennis or whatever sport you follow. So THE quidditch didn’t sound strange at all.
@@topsyturvygirl is this compensating for not putting “the” in other places? Like in England you say “go to hospital” where in America they say “go to the hospital” so the “the” gets added to the sport? 🤔😉
16:5 i kind of understand his thought process here. we learn in either half blood or deathly hallows that if a secret keeper dies, anyone who knew the secret becomes the secret keeper and that weakens the spell. by that i personally assume that if a secret keeper dies and there *is* nobody else to become secret keeper, the spell breaks. if that's not the case please correct me. so if voldy found out that sirius is the secret keeper and kills him, the spell is broken. but if sirius isn't the secret keeper and is killed, the spell is fine because he wasn't involved. my biggest question has always been: why weren't lily or james made secret keeper??
nah “the quidich” thing is just very english. “I’m going to watch the cricket” “Do you want to go watch the football this weekend?” just a very english way of saying it.
might be a "british-isim " but, saying "going to watch "the football" would be a very normal, if not most regular way of saying youre going to watch a game here
My biggest issue with Sirius has always been that he could only view his family as purely bad, even tho many among the Black descendants being more grey or prone to doing what's right when it counts.
@@emily79519 Thank you! I feel like some people engage in fandom more than the actual text. The completely inaccurate takes are wild. Sirius is the one to tell Harry that the "world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters". Also, no, most of the Blacks were most definitely not prone to doing what's right when it counts. They were an infamously Dark-inclined family.
@@SiriuslyPotty True and then Phineous just seems to be stuck up or at least self interested in things he only cares about. Like yeah he was hated at hogwarts but it sounds like people didn't like the way he ran the school and not that on he did dark magic.
@@Mary_StudiosTrue, Phineas Black wasn't a dark wizard yes, and was the most hated Headmaster. He seemed to also follow the old pureblood ideals, so prejudiced, but not dark.
The reason why Harry is not as much like his Father as Sirius "expected" him to be is because he has forgotten that Harry had 2 parents. A father AND a mother. Harry didn't find things as fun the way Sirius did because Harry was more like his Mom in that regard. Harry was more down to earth and focused on protecting those he loved and cared for, not having fun playing with life and death. He was learning to leave the child behind so as to better protect those he loved and cared for. It's why he infiltrated the Ministry. He thought Sirius was there and in trouble, and Harry wanted to save the only "father figure" he felt he had. And it was as if Sirius didn't want to truly accept that his best friend is dead, so he treated Harry as if he were his friend, like he was with James. But Harry needed a father figure and being that Sirius is his God Father, Harry latched on to him, with the thought that Sirius could be that Father figure Harry missed out on having. What it ultimately comes down to is that Sirius was still living in the past; Harry was moving forward.
I hope you explore this more in Through the Griffin Door. Rereading the series as an adult I thought that Sirius as written in the books wasn’t the best character but the movies (and Gary Oldman’s performance) really elevated him beyond what we got on the page.
We know that Regulus died though, Kreacher tells us in detail how he died and says he was pulled under by the inferi in the cave. Not even a cat could survive that even if he could transform. Also wouldn't it make more sense for him to go to grimmauld place after the events of what happened in the cave? He could have hid there as a cat but instead he went to the place Hermione got him. It makes more sense that Crookshanks was the Potters cat because Lilly mentioned a cat in her letter, also we know Mrs Figg (who is also a part of the order) breeds kneazeals and cats together which Crookshanks was part kneazeal. He's just a super intelligent cat
@ I’m not convinced Kneasles even exist because then why didn’t Dumbledoor use them in book 4? Also,I’m sorry, there’s just no way Regulus died in that cave. He knew about the defences because Kreacher would have told him (as Kreacher was used to test them) and Kreacher could easily have teleported Regulus or blast the Inferi away like Dobby did to Lucius in book 2. Also, Kreacher could have just teleported him away and got water from elsewhere, meaning they wouldn’t have even set off the Inferi in the first place. Not to mention the fact that he left a note very intentionally trying to get Voldemort to hunt him down. Who in their right mind does that? Unless he was already planning to fake his death and he wanted to send Voldemort on a wild goose chase trying to find him
In the UK is normal to say "I'm going to watch the football" especially if you are talking to someone who doesnt watch it.... i say that to my kids every time there is a game on the tv... so the comment about coming to watch the quidditch isn't that weird over here
I don’t get Harry’s closeness to Sirius. It seemed so forced. Maybe I missed something. But it’s as if they had a relationship they would have had if they knew each other for years, except they didn’t. Who trusts that fast?
I hate how, at least in the movies, he's acting all crazy in the shack, sounding like a lunatic and all that, and then in the very next scene, he's all prim and proper and like "Oh, Harry my boy, would you like to come live with me? A total stranger who you thought was going to murder you literally 3 minutes ago?" And Harry's like "Gee willikers, you mean it?!?"
Love Sirius! I think he's my favorite as well, but Lupin & James are close 2nds. Gotta say on the topic of Sirius... Why did the Ministry not just use the spell to figure out what the last spells Sirius cast with his wand when Wormtail blew up the street? Seems pretty short sighted
Tbh, I think Azkaban probably shaped and unshaped Sirius more or less. He didn't really talk anyone there so his motherlanguage could get worse, I think - also for the maturing. But well, Sirius is also my favourite characters and well - I think flawed characters are more interesting and easier to identify with them. And like - it probably made more sense in Sirius's head to change the secret keeper. And as James and Sirius were close and probably understood each other. And I mean - James also agreed to the plan. 🥲
As a linguist, I have to say that you are wrong about the "the". It was not any Quidditch. It was not Quidditch the sport in general. It was THE Hogwarts Quidditch [matches] that Harry was a part of.
idk if anyone has ever suggested this before but yall NEEEEEEED to read all the young dudes. it’s probably one of the most prolific marauders fanfics to be written, is canon compliant, and is entirely from Remus Lupin‘s point of view and it is EXCELLENT. all of the school years feel genuinely as magical as the original books and i honestly consider it my canon in my own interpretation of the books it is just SO GOOD
15:56 - 16:10 ish There's a really good answer to this. I have heard this a lot where people say Voldemort wouldn't have been able to torture out the Potters' location in the Fidelius charm, so what was the point to switch to wormtail? The point is, let's say Sirius is the Secret Keeper, and the Death Eaters guess that he is being the best friend. They show up with Voldemort to kill him and he doesn't give them up, and then they kill him. I'm sure, as secret keeper, the other OOTP members have been given the location, so they can go visit, but can't divulge the location. If he's killed, everyone that was told of the location would now become secret keeper. Instead, wormtail was the least expected, so they'd have to kill member after member before finally getting to wormtail. By that point, wormtail would only divulge it out of torture and it wouldn't work, so he's killed. Here's the best part, anyone that who knew the location at this point, would have been killed off BEFORE PETER WAS, so the secret remains safe.
In response to peter being the secret keeper, voldemort is skilled in legilimency. Maybe he's worried that voldemort might be able to torture it out of him.
You didn't even mention the most evil things he did. He mauled Ron's leg with his filthy dog teeth and dragged him over the floor. Ron could not walk properly afterwards. Sirius also tried to kill Snape with a werewolf. Sirius Black is like a dog and a dogowner in one. A lot of dog owners are addicted to adrenaline. That's why they have dangerous dogs.
Great point about Ron! I don't even think that we know if he got his leg looked at, yes it was put in a splint, but that's about it, no checking for infecction, come on! I'll admit, this is probably us just thinking to far into this, these are books for kids/teans after all, but it's fun :)
As for the secret keeper ordeal, Sirius wouldn't tell Voldemort but he can be killed. And if the secret keeper is dead, the secret becomes avaliable to everyone that previously knew the location and Sirius have told. There's no way only Peter knew the location since Dumbledore still sent Hagrid to pick up Harry and there was a statue build in the house by the wizarding society to mourn for the Potter's. This is what happened when the secret keep is still alive.
A scathing Review of Albus Dumbledore would be great but A Scathing Review of Remus Lupin would be great too! I could see alot of potential in that as well! Great video Ben!
Regarding the “The Quidditch” thing rather than saying “Quidditch”, in the UK it’s common to say “I’m off to watch the football”. Just something particular to us I guess
I remember he said that someone had been giving Voldemort info but they didn’t know who and he suspected the only other person in his group he thought of as smart
They knew there was a spy close to them for about a year. And I think it says more about how little he thinks of Peter: he couldn't fathom Peter having the audacity or skill to be the spy. And bear in mind, James must've suspected something, too. Or he wouldn't have agreed. Remus has a tendency to cut people off when he's feeling vulnerable, which we know he did, relying on James to support him because he was unemployable post-Hogwarts. I think James and Sirius read his distancing as suspicious, and Remus' reticence only exacerbated that. Voldemort's playbook was to recruit the disenfranchised and ostracised. That's Remus. And we know that it was a time of mistrust, that everyone was suspicious of everyone. Fandom likes to act like Remus/Sirius were the true bond of the Marauders for fanon shipping reasons, but James and Sirius were the true bond: the only two the other would be completely sure of. They probably eliminate Peter from suspicion because of competence and Remus' reticence post-Hogwarts. So, no evidence, just suspicions. It's explicitly stated that one of the most terrifying things about the First Wizarding War was the air of mistrust. So it wasn't just Sirius.
‘The quidditch’ is actually just a uk thing, rather than Sirius not knowing sports. We talk about sitting down to watch ‘ the football’ or ‘ the rugby’. I’m fairly certain it comes from a shortening of ‘ the football match’ and we just dropped the ‘match’ part of it
I just realized that the reason Sirius convinced them the switch was because if he got killed as the secret keeper then more people would be able to tell the death eaters where the potters lived. So he offered himself as a decoy so that they would come after him instead of peter.
THANK YOU. (I can only assume you read my comment on the Hagrid video😅) Nobody seems to understand that Sirius is a bad father figure to Harry, and *that’s the whole point* of how JK wrote the character.

But, if you're not interested in sitting through all three films, and perhaps, are only into the franchise's lore, here's a link to a video I came across years ago that will give you the basic rundown:

Same here, was thinking this while listening to the podcast too
Stems from "watching the football (game)" we just dropped the "game" over time so we'd say "watching the football"

I think it’s fairly normal in the states too. Source: I’m American
You bring up very good points, tonnes of fan fictions try to tackle this.
This is why I prefer fan fiction over the books.
@ Agreed. No notes.

"Watching the football" is actually quite a common phrase in britain
Yeah ‘watch the quidditch’ is definitely the normal way to say that. I think it’s short for the ‘the quidditch game’ or ‘the football game’
We say it that way in the US too. idk why Ben thinks its weird
Harry decided not too use it because he thought Sirius was too reckless and would do something too risky.
Ye, but SCB somehow keep overloooking this reasoning
I think optimal strategy would be also hiding the identity of the secret keeper with a second layer of Fidelius charm
i.e. Have Dumbledore be the secret keeper to Peter being the secret keeper for the Potters and not Sirius
This way it wouldn't matter at all if anyone is the Spy, because even the Spy couldn't share the secret that they're the secret keeper for the Potters
Which would make the Fidelius charm much more powerful
But I do think that James Potter would have seen this layer of protection against his closest friends being a spy as a slap in the face
Thank you for explaining! I'm not native speaker, but I thought this was the case when I read it. Glad to hear I wasn't wrong
Fun fact (or maybe not): Daniel Radcliffe's reaction to Sirius dying was so strong that not only did they mute it, which makes it even more powerful, but it actually made Emma Watson, Bonnie Wright and Helena Bonham Carter cry on set.
Whilst I've heard the same thing, I have also heard that that's just a myth/rumour that got stuck in the fanbase - which wouldn't surprise me.

Heart.
In defence of Sirius, we do in fact sometimes say "the football" or "the footy" in England. He might be a real sports fan.

There's also the time he tried to have one of his closest friends commit murder. Sirius had some major impulse control issues.
Last time I was this early, Regulus still hadn't stolen the locket.
I agree. This is why I prefer fan fiction over the books.
“Watch the quidditch” sounds fine to me. Example: “I went to watch the tennis on the weekend”
'The football' is a common phrase in the UK
I never really dwelt on the absurdity of the most wanted wizard in the world being able to just casually send mail into Hogwarts. And they pretty explicitly don't inspect until after Harry's already received it. Yeah, there really is nothing safe about the place lol
Bro just summoned the whole marauders fandom. In the worst way possible. Interesting to hear this take tho

Maybe you'll write a video about it one day :)
Love your vids, all the best from Germany, Annemarie
I think Sirius is one of the most tragic characters in HP-Series.
He was framed for murdering his best friends, locked up in prison for 12 years, just to live in hiding for 2-3 years after that and die.
Not a nice life, if you ask me....
Saying "the Quidditch" in this context is a perfectly normal turn of phrase, in Britain at least.
(Both from Snape and Peter)
It would then also explain his attachment to Harry, why he can't express himself well around others and how his impulsive nature rules out later.
Saying “the football” is totally a common thing in the UK, signed a football loving American
I think Sirius saying "the Quidditch" is the same as "the quidditch match". it sounds enough alike for me to pass that by
There's also the little incident where he tried to get Snape mauled by one of his best friends.
To be fair, men of Sirius’s generation aren’t exactly lauded for their incredible communication skills, especially regarding emotions.
@@SgtSupaman The thing is, this isn't an American book series :) I think these youtubers need to realise that.

Please do a scathing review of Cedric! I think he let the entire school bully Harry for far too long, and his dad sucks lol
Cedric is not responsible for what his father did.
In the uk some refer to football (soccer) as “the football” so him saying “the quidditch” doesn’t throw me off

Brits do call it "the football" or even the match such as "are you going to the match this weekend?"
Magic by Mikayla had a great sketch on this in her shorts

might be a "british-isim " but, saying "going to watch "the football" would be a very normal, if not most regular way of saying youre going to watch a game here
I don't understand why some people don't like Sirius, he is a flawed character who makes many mistakes but why hate him
My biggest issue with Sirius has always been that he could only view his family as purely bad, even tho many among the Black descendants being more grey or prone to doing what's right when it counts.
The only good blacks were Andromeda and Alphard and Sirius likes them. Regulus turned good but Sirius didn't know about that
@@emily79519 Thank you!

1:43 But Ben, how can Sirius be basically the, worst when Delores umb**** and Voldemort exist?
I hope you explore this more in Through the Griffin Door. Rereading the series as an adult I thought that Sirius as written in the books wasn’t the best character but the movies (and Gary Oldman’s performance) really elevated him beyond what we got on the page.
The whole Crookshanks buying the broom thing is my main evidence for him being Regulus.
Unless he was already planning to fake his death and he wanted to send Voldemort on a wild goose chase trying to find him
I need a scathing review of Remus Lupin!
14:48 “At least well enough to shoot off George’s ear”
He wasn’t even aiming for George though 😆
Ben = The coolest Sirius and Marauder anddddd also the best fish owner!! Expect fish guy!!
How dare you attack Snuffles, he's a good boy and a loveable dog.
Happy holidays guys 🎄🎄🎄❤️❤️❤️
Today, on Behind The Fur!
I love y'all but as a Marauders fan I cannot sit through this video 💜😂
I hate how, at least in the movies, he's acting all crazy in the shack, sounding like a lunatic and all that, and then in the very next scene, he's all prim and proper and like "Oh, Harry my boy, would you like to come live with me? A total stranger who you thought was going to murder you literally 3 minutes ago?"
And Harry's like "Gee willikers, you mean it?!?"
Lupin is the better mentor. I never understood Harry's hero worship .
Sirius’s letter with J’s voice over was hilarious and awesome!
@12:50
"The man has a move..."
Like Jager?? 😂😂😂
Sirius' voice on the letter sounds like Dumbledore reading them! :D hillarious!
As a linguist, I have to say that you are wrong about the "the".
It was not any Quidditch. It was not Quidditch the sport in general. It was THE Hogwarts Quidditch [matches] that Harry was a part of.
idk if anyone has ever suggested this before but yall NEEEEEEED to read all the young dudes.
it’s probably one of the most prolific marauders fanfics to be written, is canon compliant, and is entirely from Remus Lupin‘s point of view and it is EXCELLENT. all of the school years feel genuinely as magical as the original books and i honestly consider it my canon in my own interpretation of the books it is just SO GOOD
15:56 - 16:10 ish
There's a really good answer to this.
Weird and unnecessary point about dog owners on this video about a fictional character but okay
@@BradBrown31I mean this is a world that can regrow bones I don't think they're too worried about an infection lol
@@Labinzel I see your point :)
As to that last point, he also thought Lupin was the traitor/spy. Why? What evidence did he have to that?
Voldemort or Greyback (I don't remember which) was recruiting a *werewolf army* iirc
8:35 I thought you were going to say, "Actually, it's an even better gift if you subscribe to the channel."
😂 Ben’s not so subtle rant towards Harry about not coming to Remus for help
Merry Christmas.
Can you do what if Draco went to durmstrang or was in Gryffindor ,What if Hermoine was in Ravenclaw and what if voldemorts wand backfired and killed wormtail in the graveyard during gof next
Awesome as always thanks guys ❤
One of my favorite characters in the series, who barely has any literal "screen time"
13:17 watching it as someone who’s not native in English with no idea how “the quidditch” is worse than “quidditch”, and thinking “those anglophones fuss about articles too much”
A video title has never made run to TH-cam faster 🤣
