      Not to mention factually (not necessarily scientifically) showing the RESULTS of such products used. Before and after comparisons of seeing the inside of an engine.. not science but certainly good enough for the girls I go out with. Would be quite interested to see how the results of all his testing on a small single cylinder carbureted engine compare to a larger multi cylinder engine with fuel injection.

    Hey thanks for the testing. Very interesting results. It's NOT a poor use of resources, especially since you enjoy it. I feel the same way about my projects such as restoring old machinery that very few folks care about. Please keep it up!
    I've got a lot of experience with Buick cars from the 80's. We've seen several instances where Buick 3.8L engines will ingest many quarts of Dexron from the transmission of the car. This can happen because there is a vacuum hose connected between the engine manifold and the transmission modulator. If the modulator diaphragm fails, it will allow the engine to ingest massive amounts of transmission oil.
    In these instances, I have seen similar results to yours. The trans oil acts as an engine flush, cleaning up the crankcase deposits and dissolving them in the oil. This is not a problem on well maintained engines. However, if the engine has not seen regular oil changes, or the filter is already blocked with debris - the cleaning action can cause too much debris to break loose and begin circulating in the oil. In one case, it caused the engine to fail rod bearings. This happened because so much debris circulated it actually blocked the oil feed holes in the main bearings from the oil gallery in the block!

    • @ProjectFarm

      This is a terrific post! Thanks for sharing your experience with ATF in the 3.8L.

    • @davida1hiwaaynet

      Thanks! They went to the vacuum modulator system on the front wheel drive GM cars when the 4-speed auto transmission was introduced (1985) up until the late 90's when they went to the electronic pressure control using 4T65E. Even though the modulator is very reliable, there are a lot of them out there so the law of averages says there will be incidents! You can see the smoke cloud for miles when this happens!

      Great point! Breaking up the gunk, and emulsifying it in the oil is great (think dishwasher cycle), but getting that suspended stuff out of harms way soon is very important (think sand in your shorts!).
      I prefer to never apply the "set it and forget it" crankcase cleaner additives, and do a compulsory oil change after a few dozen miles (

      I'm wondering the same thing. Especially since I don't believe in this seafoam product or believing there is any need to keep the combustion chamber clean. All you really need is fresh oil, a clear fuel lines and clean spark plug

    • @ScottandTera
      @ScottandTera 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      smokiethebear912 carbon build up can cause hot spots that can in serious cases leadto predetenation. and also cause pistons to fail in high compression engines due to the heat being concentrated in a small area weakening the piston and burning a hole through. If enough builds up on the edges of the Pistons it will cause scaring in the cylinders allowing combustion pressure to leak passed the rings contaminating the oil

      Project Farm you should do a comparison between regular 10% ethanol fuel 87 octane. vs 91 or highest octane fuel available in your area

    • @BlackCatRedScarf
      @BlackCatRedScarf 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joel Dale Even running the engine on common hydrated ethanol would be interesting.
      My only concern is about the carburetor, because some older carburetors are not prepared to deal with ethanol and might suffer small corrosion if you keep running on ethanol everyday.
      If your engine got a compression ratio lower than 10:1 or 9.5:1, I suggest warm up running with gasoline before fuelling with just etanol.
      The ethanol or E100 usually sold on gas stations *contains around 4% of water*. If water can help to clean the engine, on the long run it might render some results.
      _______________
      Ethanol is a very common fuel in Brazil.
      Usually you got between 72% and 83% of gasoline mileage (highly depending on the specs of the engine, like compression ratio and spark advance settings) and usually cost between 70% and 85% of the price of gasoline in Brazil (depending on the region).
      E85 is not exactly common around the world, but could be interesting too.

    And whomever said its a waste of money and resources apparently has never been in tight situations before.
    Now it is true that most additives should be used as a last resort in certain situations, but don't think it is ever a waste of money when your educating people.
    A fuel injector on some cars range up to over $100 dollars a piece and if sea-foam can clean them vs spending $100 dollars for one injector, I don't see that as a waste of money.

      I think it stems from many who insist all of these are garbage (see post above), all you need is oil changes. However, here's the funny thing, most of this stuff is already IN oil, half of them use the same detergents, the difference is the concentration. SO technically both parties are sort of right: change the oil properly and frequently and you likely won't have most of these issues. However, say you purchased a used car that has lots of sludge (I fall into this camp) because the previous owners didn't change as often as they should have, and that's where these types of things can really make a difference. Sure, oil changes will also do the same thing, just slower and over time. I just think it's funny when people call these chemicals snake-oil, most of them are in the same products they recommend just in a different form!

None of the latter target minorities or specific sets of people. Really I think he was rather tasteful, though of course it could be said without the insults, and it would probably have better results. Though, being it is TH-cam, the other person is most likely to react belligerently no matter what.

Way back in the day when I was a kid in a small town there weren't any name brand part stores , so you just went and bought ATF as a 1st line of defence of a noisy motor. If it was just carbon buildup it normally worked quickly by memory. Now I have been dishing out for seafoam for a couple years but I'm thinking going back to ATF is cheaper...?

      My only question is, what happened to SEAFOAM. I'm only 29 about to me 30 in a few days but I remember seafoam only being like 4 or 5 dollars a can when I started driving now it has skyrocketed. anywhere from 9 to 12 dollars a can.

    • @personperson9591
      @personperson9591 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Popularity. Seafoam is a trusted name, and it does work, but now people think it'll work miracles and since it's a trusted name, it's one of the most promoted products out there as well. I'm only slightly older and yeah, used to be way cheaper and was also rarely advertised, now it's front-page on many auto shop adverts. I also think the fact that it does smoke out an engine while it burns it also plays into the mindset that it's doing a ton internally, even if it's actually a rather gentle amount of cleaning and most of the smoke is just the product itself burning off.

    I've been using ATF on my Engines to flush them every oil change for the last 15 years. Keep in mind I use this on older cars that have build up and can or have potential sludge issues. I drain my oil. Fill up engine with 4 quartz of ATF and let engine run on idle for about 15 minutes. Drain ATF, install new oil filter and oil. ATF does a good job at cleaning the crankcase. This method was shared with me by a Technician at Nissan many years ago.

      It will not hurt the bearings if you do not run it under load. He said he was idling the engine which would be fine. There are a lot of newer engines that are using motor oil not much higher viscosity than transmission fluid.

      @jeremymardlin5381 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      86ttop Gt yes but it still is oil. It just has a lot more detergents in it than motor oil. It doesn't hurt anything unless you run the engine under load if poured in the crankcase. It really won't hurt anything even at about 20% or so. It will make the oil dirty as hell pretty fast unless the engine is pretty clean already.

    Back in the day - that is, the 1960s, we UK vehicle owners were offered a product called STP. This was 'guaranteed' to restore our engines to their former glory, by the simple expedient of pouring a steady stream of said product into a running engine via the carburettor. The result was always a cloud of blue smoke which meant that the treatment could only be used by driving into the countryside and finding a quiet spot to administer the treatment. Used in an urban setting one could justifiably expect death threats to follow.
    Looked at in retrospect, it's easy to see that this was a remedy for engines "in extremis". Engines that were burning oil because the piston rings were allowing oil to pass from the crankcase to the combustion chamber, or via the valve guides and seals to the same end. This results in carbon fouling in the chamber which negatively affects the swirl effect at ignition, resulting in mediocre performance. The effect of this additive was extremely short-lived, to the extent that after four or five attempts it would have been cheaper to spend the money on stripping the engine and wire-brushing the carbon away. Not forgetting, of course, to leave the carbon built up at the top of the cylinder(s) because that is 'useful' carbon as far as compression is concerned.

I would love to see results on a newer vehicle (one with a modern emission system) if at all possible. Your videos have proven almost conclusively that SeaFoam is great at cleaning up engines. Jordan make sure that when ur driving the car, use a 1 to 4 ratio. example: 1 quart ATF plus 4- quarts oil depending how much fluid engine uses. Couple days ago my oil was already dirty/ black. I added 1 quart of ATF drive 2 hours to relatives home drained it next morning. Added new filter and oil. usually I run 4 quartz of ATF with new filter only, only on idle for about 20 minutes. no driving, no reving. 1 to 4 ratio as described above helps as oil pressure builds to get the high up cams. thanks for feedback.

It is great you focus on the facts and minimize fluff. Electric Turbo Farmabago was hilarious tho! Info like this never gets dated, and it is awesome you provide updates! I plan on contributing eventually if the financial damage from upcoming medical bills is not severe. Project Farm a waste of money? I have yet to find a cheap hobby. Even my new hobby of buying / building Lego Technic kits is pricey, which is the only thing I can do with current physical limitations. Lego is recyclable though... I can build many different things with one kit, or "kitbash" multiple models together :) - There is a youtube video of Lego engineers building a life size driveable replica of a Bugatti Chiron.

I also mix atf to my engine oil. my car calls for 10w40, so i mixed 1liter of atf with 3liters of 15w50 to negate the thinning of the oil. it did a pretty good job, after 10yrs of age when my machenic opened the valve cover, the metal was only slightly brown not even a bit of sludge.

    Hey dude, fellow Missourian here.
    Don’t listen to these crusty old fuckers, the videos you make have taught me a lot of things.
    1. that engines are not as complex as their manufacturers would have me believe.
    2. Some of these additives have multiple uses, and believe it or not, they actually work!
    3. These videos are a source of education for me. Because of this channel, I swear by Seafoam before every oil change, and in every 3rd-4th tank of fuel in my car and motorcycle.
    And a lot more.
    The people saying you’re wasting your time are the kind of people who still recommend using leaded fuel in their 1987 jalopy car they maintain themselves. They don’t see the need to recognize how far technology has come. But for the rest of us, we need people like you holding these companies accountable with unbiased testing that shows us what actually works and what doesn’t.
    You keep doing what you’re doing in the name of the onward march of mechanical science!

    Does not work..the way it is advertised...want the Bowl Clean..clean it ..want piston clean ..clean it ! Want the Head clean..clean it ..Brake Clean or Throttle Body cleaner..work very well as final wipe. Then used this Amsoil stuff to keep it clean

    ATF, while not perfect, is best of the 3. I use ATF in the oil and got great results as well.

    Yeah a small engine may get destroyed, but just like crashing brand new cars for saftey testing , it's a sacrifice that has a purpose.

    I don't remember how well the water idea did, but not great to run too long, to get rid of the water take a capful or two of mineral spirits/paint thinner and run it, I would do this with fresh oil and monitor oil level during and after running motor

    Hey man I love the videos! These are definitely not a poor use of resources, these videos are ways I learn about things I’ve never thought of, and along with the that you make videos in such deep detail while keeping it entertaining. I’m a huge nerd for engines and always want to find ways to keep my engines running forever and also learn if I can restore damage without taking apart the engine. You are one of the only channels i fully trust to not false advertise a bad product or bring a biased review, I simply want to learn by facts and that’s exactly what you do. I learn new stuff from every video you make, and I hope to continue learning with you as you make these videos! Keep up the great work!

    what if you did a soak of the piston head? i know its harder on a lawn mower but my thinking is if you took the spark plug out dumped some sea foam in there let it work for a while and then sucked out the excess liquid what would happen

    I love these!! I grew up learning small engines at my fathers lawn mower repIr shop. I sent him the link which began a fun filled time machine of conversations. Keep up the great content.👍 Certainly educational and entertaining for most. Disregard negativity along with the busted products. Cheers 🍻

    I prefer Seafoam.
    I would like to add that ATF does have a friction modifier that has a hardening effect on seals.

      Was wondering why nobody mentioned this... I've heard ATF will ruin engine seals & when doing sludge flush with ATF not to run the motor, but instead cycle with external pump through oil system.. BMW/Audi background, maybe relevant.

    Definately not a poor use of resources. I'm a student at a trade school and I've learned alot from these videos. I love these tests, you're very professional, straight to the point, very enjoyable to watch and at first I thought you were an engineer or something based on all your knowledge of how to conduct these tests and just how much you know about engines and how they work. Very great videos and I really hope you enjoy making them and I do very much enjoy watching them and learning from your videos. You deserve more subscribers and more recognition on TH-cam. If you have a Patreon or anything like that I'd be more than happy to donate and contribute to the videos.

    Enjoyed. Long time user of Seafoam. I have never used it for cleaning inside a motor. But I use it in fuel for keeping injectors clean. It is a life saver when using crappy fuel. I have John Deere Gator that will constantly clog up without it. I had never used it in my 2011 Chevy 1500 until this year. When starting cold it developed a lag when starting. I thought it was fuel pump losing prime after adding half the amount suggested on bottle and running It has completely stopped and is firing like new again. Would other things work as well? Maybe, but with 165000 on my truck I'm not taking a chance. Still love the stuff!
