One thing that you forgot about the early days of SNL was the fact that during the week of rehearsal and writing, members of the show would regularly hang out with radio personality Don Imus where they would all do drugs, not just John Belushi. They even did so while Imus was on the air.
I love how Lorne Michaels thought hiring Damon Wayans so soon after Eddie Murphy left was racist just because Damon was another funny black man, but didn’t see the racism in denying Damon from playing bigger roles on the show🤦🏾♂️
The big problem with Chevy Chase is he was the funniest guy in the room and he knew it. The biggest problem was he still felt that way even when he wasn't. He did a couple good movies back in the day, then a bunch of horrible ones, and he still walks around like he's the messiah of comedy.
If I’m honest I think he has always been bitter since the 90’s when he lost his position as a late night host on the Chevy chase show. Then like you said just being in constant bombs. I bet he felt so entitled on community becasue in the acting world it’s low to go from Tv to movie than back to Tv and not even a main Character. He definitely let his ego get to his head but it’s also his fault because he never humbled himself like other great comedians that actually grew.
Whenever I see Steve Martin and Martin short on screen together. I don’t think about their long lasting friendship or their impeccable chemistry. I think about Chevy chase. All three knew each other and work with each separately. But it was Three amigos when they all came together at once. Short and Martin became life long friends after the movie. Chevy? Not so much.
I really tried to like Chevy Chase Once he made me laugh, it was a scene from the movie Fletch It was the beach scene when someone asked who he was and Chase replied I’m Ted Nugent. That was it funny as hell,
And "The Chevy Chase Show" finally proved that - and a lot of the "untalented diva" rumors, that have been floating around since "Vacation" filming wrapped...
You guy's left out the infamous episode with Frank Zappa. And the first 5 years where the 3 women had to share a dressing room and the men had their own.
When Chevy Chase was discovered, he thought he was immortalized, locked in as a skinny funny maybe sexy guy ..he was getting PRIMO coke at that time. So I excuse the delusion.
After the departure of Eddie Murphy and joe piscopo, to avoid another 1980 disaster, a virtual all star cast was hired FOR ONE SEASON. Instead of young and up and coming comedians, seasoned pros were brought on. This year had billy crystal, Martin short, Chris guest, and Harry shearer.
Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer were writers for years prior to that on SNL. Also, he brought on Martin Short after SCTV (another Lorne Michaels series) had ended - his character Ed Grimly was literally a carryover from his time on SCTV. Billy Crystal was a comedic force, and SNL was frankly lucky to get him, if only for the single season. Not too much later, SNL made long-time writer and occasional cast member Al Franken a full-time cast member, where he made the character of Stuart Smalley a staple of the show - so much so that the movie "Stuart Saves His Family" came to be after Al had left the show for the second time.
@@lexkanyima2195 they all signed one year deals. Martin short later said he didn’t even know if it was possible for him to come back for a second year.
I have an idea for the next top 10: Top Ten INXS songs. They have so many bops and classics. It would be so cool if you guys would collate their best hits in a top 10.
@@steelersrock4392yeah and in 2010 they would say it hasn’t been funny since 2000, and in 2000 they said, well you get the idea. That’s an ongoing meaningless meme of the show. The “good years” of the show always coincide with when the viewer was younger. It’s called nostalgia. It’s the same thing with music.
In retrospect, some things make no sense now that may have been more apparent in the moment. For me, I can't imagine how producers and audiences found Sarah Silverman unfunny but Melanie Hutsell lasted multiple seasons. And every time Jenny Slate was on the show, I was charmed but she also only lasted a year.

The "second cast" was known by all as the worst period in SNL history. It still is. Without Eddie Murphy, it would have made total sense to cancel the show forever. He wasn't the only funny one, but the others were...well not Eddie. He outshone them all.

Whose idea was it to cast Segal? I stopped watching him after the second movie. He always plays the same character. That can be boring!
It's weird that Phil Hartman wasn't mentioned. The man was considered the "glue" that kept SNL together.

Victoria Jackson’s ditzy persona on SNL wasn’t an act, she really is like that.
ditzy, noun.....empty-headed, vacuous, stupid, brainless (look it up)
She's not ditzy - she's crazy.
She is a tinfoil hatter, definitely alludes to QAnon stuff, very MAGA stop the steal, etc.
I thought she was hilarious 😂, act or not. And she was and still is a personal friend of Weird Al, so she's okay with me.
