  • ►Modern electric parking brakes simplify the interior and provide a bit of extra safety compared to their manual predecessors. However, their functionality can make brake jobs a hassle. In order to replace the rear brake pads on just about every Volvo newer than 2008, the electronic brake must be retracted to the service position with a scan tool. Follow along as Adam, our Volvo Catalog Manager, takes you through this rear brake job to reset the EPB warning message.

    The 9V battery trick is brilliant! 🙂 (I used a pair of alligator-clip test leads to make a hands-free connection. Super easy.)

    Thank you for the demonstration, I can clearly follow how to retract the motor & piston, whether removing the motor or using a small battery, but I am still a little bit in the dark as to how you reset the parking brake on completion, In my mind to reset the parking brake I assume you start the car press and hold the foot brake while operating the parking brake switch on and off two or three times.

      Volvo tech here if you manually back it out in option 2. All you need to do it put it back together. Get into car and press the peddle a few times until it’s stiff again

    Hey, great video thanks. For method 3, Do you know how to unclip the cable to the motor? Don’t want to brake it off by doing it wrong and it seems well stuck 😂

    Nice video. Question, I bought the MX808 scanner shown, but when i go to put the brakes into service mode, i get an error saying "The Vehicle must be in usage mode active" any idea on what that means or what i may be doing wrong. The key is on (engine off) . I am on a 2020 Volvo XC60

    • @andrewtellez862

      Key in, hold start button for 3 seconds to put the car into accessory mode, I would assume.

    Hey, when should I use the epb function of the scanner? Is it while the engine is on/off? Also is it Before / After I took off the wheels? A video of taking off rear brake while using the scanner can be great :)

    My 2010 XC70 stood for a few months with the EPB engaged. Now one side has seized entirely. Using a 9V or even 18V battery does not move the motor at all. Can I assume the motor is faulty or is there a chance it is the caliper as well?

    But how does the caliper actually retract? I did the battery trick, didn't seem to work. Pulled it off and did it manually, but how does the actual cylinder go back into the caliper????

    • @goranpersson6816
      @goranpersson6816 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You push it in manually just like on a normal caliper. The motor only turns a screw that push the cylinder

      At your 3:52 mark you say to push it in how you like but don’t show different methods to push it on!?!?!?

    So I ordered frt and rear brk pads, and rotors from your website, and doing this for the 1st time on my sister's 2018 XC90 t6 Momentum. I'm more familiar with Hondas, and with that said, I am planning on using the 3rd method. So, as long as I follow your directions, with doing the prkg brk on , and off, after brk pad replacement, I don't need to use a scanner? Thx. #R337109542 for reference.

    • @JessBertra2012

      My broke ass is about to do the same. How did it go

    • @crispa1861
      @crispa1861 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JessBertra2012 I had to borrow an ex coworkers expensive scanner to reset the electronic parking brake. On the rear caliper brackets both sides has this one lower bolt that's quite hidden prepare to have a 3/8 breaker bar because that thing is torqued down to 66 ft pounds and it had loctite on it. Same with the front caliper mount bracket bolts they put loctite on it I don't know why. expect on the front is 148 foot pounds rear set 66 why you need a freaking loctite? I know that I said I'm a Honda guy, as I never saw Honda put loctite in their caliper bolts.
