I actually used a trackpad for a couple of years, I had switched from a macbook to an iMac and missed the gestures, however after continued use there's an issue that came up for me: since you can't rest your hand on the trackpad without inputing a movement, a gesture or a click I constantly held my hand up in tension, lifted in anticipation to click between moving the cursor, dragging or scrolling or while reading. I'm also a guitar player so I started to feel a very weird pain in my picking hand that I also used to manipulate the trackpad, I eventually switched to the magic mouse and while it isn't the most ergonomic mouse it definitely let me rest my hand on it more comfortably than the trackpad, the advantage is that with the magic mouse you still get a lot of gestures and can scroll horizontally as well as vertically, I work with music and video editing so this is essential

I use a Trackpad since 2013 and will never go back to using a mouse ever. It just feels so much more intuitive and "direct". Although I already use a Trackpad since 2013 I found several very helpful tips in your video. Thanks, Edgar!

Thanks I've used both Logic and a Trackpad for years, but I usually use the Magic Mouse with Logic, so wasn't aware of some of these gestures, so this has been a great help.

I was thinking about making a tutorial to demonstrate the power of trackpads but you did it. Brilliant work! You of a Mac user makes me feel like using the tiptap since I'm using Windows where are no apps nor built-in support for that. Though we have more customizable pattern-recognition gestures thanks to GestureSign.

I just got my first Mac ever, a M2 Mac Mini Base model ( Sadly I couldnt afford any used ones with the 16mb RAM/Unified Mem upgrade :(, and I am running Traction Waveform Pro, using mostly Universal AUdio Spark Plug Ins, I plan to get a trackpad and I appreciate you making this excellent video! I hoped it would help with adjusting the faders! Also I intend to ( when I can afford it ith my very limited income!) Buy a Universal Audio Sattelite as good of a used one for Mac Thunderbolt as I can afford! Excellent video sir! thanks! I would love to be able to afford Logic but for now I am loving Waveform pro!

Hi, on the new iMac M1, after going into System Preferences, for the three-finger control (in Accessibility) you have to now click on 'Pointer Control' which will then take you to 'Mouse & Trackpad' in order to select 'Enable Dragging' and then 'three finger drag'.

Nice Edgar! You’ve sold me on trying to get back to using my Magic Touchpad. I’ve been using the Magic Mouse because it felt familiar and I can still scroll 360°. I think after a couple of weeks learning to ‘play’ my Mac like I play my instrument, that this will save me lots of time and stress on my right hand. I also liked your BTT ideas for FF, RW, Play and GoTo.
I’ll be watching this one again when I get back to my computer. 😎
BTW, How do you like the Magic Trackpad 2? I’ve only got the first generation, but am considering upgrading.

Hi Edgar, a late reply: thanks for this enlighting and detailed tutorial about trackpad - which really motivates me to try the trackpad working with Logic. One question: did You find any way to manage vertical zooms WITHOUT using the option key? I still have not found a comfortable solution for zooming in vertically and horizontally , especially in the piano roll. Is there eventually a configuration option in Your recommended app "Better Touch Tool" ?

Anybody knows where the 'deep press' went on Logic with the trackpad ? In the past when pressing the trackpad deep, it gave you the option to name the region for instance, was really helpful.

Three finger dragging is great but unfortunately there seems to be about a half second delay when you release an object using that technique. Is there any way to eliminate that behavior and make it snap in place after release as quickly as click dragging?
I agree it is just plain annoying that Pro Tools doesn't support Trackpad (which I use for ages). Thanks for that Pinch tip. That is great.
I just bought a Mac mini to replace my struggling macbook pro. the macbooks trackpad is unmatched for scrolling laterally and vertically with ease in Logic it made me stupid productive. So I had to get this. Kind of expensive but Ive never been disappointed with an apple product(other than the lack of memory expansion.)
I feel differently about using the track pad. I like 3 finger hold and two finger scrolling, but I can't use the track pad for 8 hours per day. I think there's a lot of stress put on the hand by "hovering" it over a track pad.

I can't access the contextual menu in specific regions as you demonstrate. Not even with a mouse. How do i do this?
Anyone figure out how to grab faders using the Trackpad? I just added a Magic Trackpad 2 (already have a version 1) and switched from "enable dragging with drag lock" (which worked with faders) to "three finger drag". On the new Trackpad2 I can press a little harder and "grab" the fader but three finger drag doesn't work. Can't do any fader work with the Trackpad 1. I can grab faders in the Arrange window though. Am also using BTT. Thanks for any help.
In BTT, click on the Enhanced Settings tap and then the Trackpad tab in the Toolbar. At the bottom of that window there is a setting for Three finger drag optimization. With the Optimize option, you are able to use this gestures with the Logic Faders, and avoid other three finger drag issues when dialing knob on Plugin Windows.
However, this setting has other “side effects”. In my setting it disables other three finger gestures I set up in BTT.
I filed a bug report wit BTT and the Andreas, the developer, emailed me back saying that this is an issue due to the problematic implementation of three finger drag in macOS. He thinks that is also the reason why Apple hurried that option so deep in the System Preferences.

In the BetterTouchTools app, you select the Pro Tools app and assign the Gesture "Pinch In" to the Shortcut "R" and the Gesture "Pinch Out" to the Shortcut "T"

Both are a little bit different. Trackpad 2 has Force Touch, Haptic Feedback, uses a charging cable instead of batteries, and has a little bigger surface. I changed to that Trackpad 2 about three months ago, but I have a problem that it is a little bit too "sensitive" for my taste. I have to get use to it.
Yes, from what I have read, recommend magic trackpad 2 more for graphic design because of the sensitivity, but thanks for responding. Do you plan to make a video of how to work with articulations in Studio String in the future? thank you very much Edgar.
Articulations is definitely a contender (of the long list of topics). However, this is a new feature in Logic and I have the feeling that it will change (evolve, get even better) in the next few updates, which is not good when your video (that you spent a lot of time with on) is outdated a month after the release.
However, I have the most extensive explanations in my book "Logic Pro X - What's New in 10.4" (DingDingMusic.com), with thirty pages of in-depth information just about Articulations and Keyswitches that you won't find anywhere else.

So my Trackpad is up and running and now all I need is a wrist support. I can't seem to make the vertical zoom work with the option command though. Any advice? Again, many thanks!
Drag middle finger tap with first finger. Middle click is longer.
Double tap with two fingers should be middle and ring finger - again because of length
I am having a difficult time with "Play at Click position" assignment for BTT. Shift & Click on logic.....how do you assign that to logic x 's key command??? There is no key command for that.....so I can't assign using BTT . In other words.... What is the Logic Key Command for "Play from Click Position"? I can't find it. If you need to assign key comman on logic...where do you find "Play from click position" in Key Comman window in Logic X...???

I use both a Magic TrackPad and a mouse. The trackpad is NOWHERE near as accurate as a mouse. So if I am doing fine edits, I grab the mouse. Similarly if I am going to add a plugin, or create an aux send, or really anything on the mixer I grab my mouse. It's just more accurate.

I'm an UNNATURAL scroller! Guess that makes me ol' school... I have (and can) go with the natural setting but I think I prefer "unnatural". It's the first thing I change when I get a new computer. But I don't know... Maybe I've just be _Scroll Shamed!!!_ 🤣

Funny that a very detailed video on the trackpad missed a really big tip, maybe the greatest of them all! In "three finger drag" you can drag (adjust) any buttons on a plugin, mixer or vst-instrument etc with three fingers on the trackpad. Additionally - when in three finger drag-mode on a button in a DAW, you can use two fingers to adjust very small increments precisely. The track pad acts as a (virtual) physical button. How bout that!
Thanks for that helpful addition. The two-finger drag is great for finer increments, but it is not supported with all plug-ins, also not the Pro Tools track fader and track pan.

Another small tip is that the trackpad gen 1 and 2 may have issues working properly with M1-M3 processors from Monterey onwards. I use M1 Monterey with Trackpad gen 3 and Cubase 13. Apple always changes the System Preferences around. In BigSur, the Trackpad and Mouse Options are under the "Pointer Controls"

The scrolling thing is one reason I can't use an apple mouse. I have a mouse with a wheel.
I drag by clicking the button on the trackpad with my thumb, and then drag with my index finger. No need to turn on three finger dragging.
I also select multiple items that way.
And right clicking is two fingers to press down to click.
Those are standard macOS gestures for track pads. No need to turn on the features in Accessibility.

Why a mouse? RSI. I went back from a trackpad to a mouse after serious RSI. Look at how cramped your hand gets with a trackpad. Even better was my next step to an inexpensive midi controller. So I run most of my Logic Pro X functions without a mouse :-)
I'm curious how you use the Trackpad because my hand doesn't get cramped (even after 12-14 hours). Are you using the Trackpad completely pressure-free without any click or pressing down? Using the click or click-hold on a Trackpad does use more pressure than on a mouse and I would strongly recommend against that. That's why I show in my video how to do it "pressure-free".
I am using it poorly. I don't have your patience :-) Also I only have the laptop trackpad. The first bluetooth mouse and trackpad were so bad I am scared to buy another one. I have reviewed your excellent video again and will benefit fro m that but I do enjoy using my midi controller, particularly for drum pads and controlling virtual synths in real time. Almost like the real thing :-)
@@MusicTechExplained Great video! I want to use a trackpad now! However, there is 'mac magic mouse' now that has gestures, zoom and scroll functions, and works pretty much like a curved trackpad. Also, mouses have always served as hand rests just laying your hand on top of it, while you seem to have to lift your own hand over a trackpad. How is it less straining to your wrist? Is it too bad to have both (and also a trackball) and switch between them?
this video is absurd. You are doing the same amount of hand movements in order to perform tasks, just on a different device instead of a mouse. the active resting your hand on a mouse is what people should be doing. but you are inferring with your whole argument that people are gripping their mouse with a level of force that will cause damage since they'll be doing this 12 hours at a time. you can get carpal tunnel and ligament damage from the actions of touch typing.. that's what you were suggesting is not harmful with a touch pad. there touching a trackpad and moving their fingers up and down on that surface just like they would on a keyboard. It is just as damaging. and gestures have been a staple of track pads for as long as I could remember... how are so many people commenting that they were not aware of this. I use Windows, and our track pads are objectively bad as compared to the external one that Apple sells.. I think they call it a magic pad or whatever.
that's about the only reason I don't use a Windows trackpad.. they suck and there is no external option. if there was, I doubt I would use it because using a blunt object like those knobs we call fingers are not precise and are hand motions are jerky and simply don't provide the accuracy needed for audio editing.. you can increase the sensitivity of your hand movements on the trackpad, but that slows down the cursor.. or if you increase sensitivity so that movements are displayed almost with no latency and in a one-to-one scale, then you're accuracy and precision suffer.
I also found it unfortunate that you discounted the use of a stylus in this use case. you conclude it is better for graphic design.. But I disagree! try it.... you might be pleasantly surprised.. I use a graphic design stylus and pad for Pro Tools.. I'm comfortable using a pen, pencil and paper. I'm able to write words and take notes on regular paper with ease. we've all been doing this for years.. leveraging that experience and ability that we've all grown up with was a no brainer. I admit, it took some getting used to but within a few days to a week, I had completely adapted a stylus to my Pro Tools workflow..
I've also tried using the pad mouse, such as the Space Mouse and other HID CAD oriented devices made by 3D Connexion to less than stellar results ... but I think this might be on account of not being a proficient CAD user. so I was learning how to use those devices from scratch in a environment that was not designed for it.. I have a feeling though that someone that is proficient in CAD design, would be able to use those devices much more effectively in other non-CAD software... I've seen someone use a spacemouse like wizard in the Adobe Creative Cloud.. so it's definitely possible. But the thing that slowd anyone down one using a computer is the pointing device. using a keyboard is much more precise.. I can't imagine the touchpad as having any benefit over a keyboard. it's just as imprecise as a mouse, the same effort. that's your main claim is that it's less effort.. how. I'm watching you use your fingers exactly how I'm using a mouse. The only thing you are arguing is that people don't have to grip the mouse... but I don't think people do this.. but this is the Crux of your entire argument.
very weird. this is a subject that should be dealt with by medical professionals .. your opinion here is meaningless without scientific evidence.. Show me evidence that clicking on a trackpad is less than damaging and performing the equivalent action on a mouse, then I might be more.. But your personal experience is no different from anyone else's.. it takes a little bit of hubris to decide to put out a video like this if I'm being honest.. it's almost like you're teaching kindergartner how to use a computer.. some of the comments are shocking.. like full didn't know how gestures work! I think this is a failure of apple and Mac users. I think educating yourself on how your devices work should really be the title of this video.. my experience with a trackpad has been the polar opposite of yours.
