Ladies used to throw their panties on the stage and always handed him handkerchiefs to wipe his face. There were lots of variety shows in those days and Tom's was one of them. Few lasted more than a season or two, but that's how we got to see all the popular acts and also get to know the performers from the previous generations too.

The show was short-lived, but brilliant, because it was very expensive to produce. First, Tom was not cheap. But, the show had to be filmed TWICE. It was a joint ABC/ITV production that aired both in the USA/UK and each country used different technology. So side-by-side cameras were used to capture the show for both ITV/ABC. It was a top 10 show. Here’s Tom doing some different kind of dancing on a ‘naughty’ version of the Amazing Rhythm Aces song ‘Third Rate Romance’: th-cam.com/video/Au6c-Xtab4Q/w-d-xo.html

I don't know if the method you describe was ever used, but there was a more sensible cost-effective method used for at least one Tom Jones series:
The shows were shot at ATV Elstree with pairs of cameras next to each other, one US NTSC Colour camera, the other UK PAL. I am sure of this as I used to know someone who was a senior figure at the studio.

If you can find a good quality recording, go find a video of Roy Head doing "Treat Her Right". (He had an EXTREMELY interesting way of dancing . . .) A lot of people see fit to criticize him for that but, as far as I’m concerned, that was their own personal business. After all, she didn’t have to stay with him. I’m sure that she could have gotten a big divorce settlement, had she wanted to. I think that if you choose to get involved with and stay with an artist, any artist, who is very popular with the opposite sex, then you should know what to expect. I mean, if you find them sexy and attractive, chances are that others probably will as well.

Many popular singers back in the day had their own shows, starting back to the dawn of early TV in the 50's to it's height of popularity in the 60's-70's and into early 80's. That was before MTV & music videos took over. We called them TV variety shows; which often played in the early evenings. They usually consisted of musical numbers, both solos & duets with guest stars who were scheduled to appear that week, coupled with comedy skits and elaborately choreographed dance routines. You can find old clips on TH-cam. My mom loved Tom's show but he was a bit "old" for me at the time. I was more into The Jacksons, The Sonny & Cher show, The Osmond Family - specifically the Donny & Marie show. They were a brother & sister duo for awhile after Donny left the "boy band" with his older brothers that he started singing in when he was just 5 yrs old.

Sir Tom Jones, yes he was knighted and was more in one man than any woman could stand!! He was from wales and was one of Elvis' best friends. Imagine that much sexuality in one room together! He was married 63 years and his song She's a Lady was about her. A must watch. He was indeed a philanderer but always had but one woman that had his heart. He dated a sister for quite some time. He was in his 80's and killing it at Glastonbury! Oh brother he does take the shirt off even at 80 and still has it!

The song "She's A Lady" was written by Paul Anka, a singer/songwriter quite popular in his own right in the Fifties, and who recorded the song himself. He and Tom were good friends. Though Tom didn't write the song, it was a big hit for him, and he was definitely referencing his feelings about his wife Linda when he'd sing that song.

What a blast to see you reaction to a show I watched when it aired!! Tom kissed my sister at a show in Las Vegas in the 70s. Please please react to his performance with Janis Joplin of the song Raise Your Hand, and another ballad called I Who Have Nothing, both also from his TV show. There are great duets with Wilson Pickett and Stevie Wonder from the show as well. You'll be glad you could experience that kind of magic with artists who clearly had mad respect for each other. Thank you!

His Las Vegas shows were known to be out of this world - all 100% energy, talent, and dancing moves ... and then he sang ❤.... and he sang the theme song to a James Bond Movie ( it just gets better and better )

Tom Jones and Elvis were great friends. Tom is actually copying Elvis with the kissing of ladies like Elvis did. When they played Vegas at the same time they each took in the other’s show. Love Tom.

    • @Sometimes-even-lyrical
      @Sometimes-even-lyrical ปีที่แล้ว +1

I believe it's the other way around. Elvis admired Tom's interaction with his TV and concert audiences, and started doing an exaggerated version of the kissing. Tom did "Treat Her Right" in 1969, and continued kissing fans in his Vegas shows, which Elvis often attended. Elvis had one show a night, while Tom had two. Tom had even encouraged Elvis to make his big comeback, and Elvis copied much of what Tom was doing so successfully and added more to it.
The ballyhooed kissing spectacle during the Elvis "Love Me Tender" performance was in 1970, by the way, and complete with the hype and silliness and a ridiculous sequined white jumpsuit. Ahh, the excesses of the Seventies!

Went to see him very recently. He was amazing. In his 80s now. The voice is still there, but the hips didn't move quite so much. However, watch out. He's just had a hip replacement, so you never know what he will be up to after recovery. 😉😉

It was a variety show, however back then the morality police became strong and I'm certain as it was with Elvis , if he couldn't do it how he wanted to, then why do it?

I worked in radio in the 80's and grew up 60-70's listening to Tom Jones. I've never gotten excited about any star, except Tom Jones. He is amazing in concert. I was too young when he had his variety show to understand the fun. But I loved his voice even then. He is a showman. I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times in my career. He is such a gentleman. Charisma on and off the stage. He's in his 8p's now and still amazing!

Omg this brings back so many memories. Me and my best friend were ages 11-13 while this show aired. We both had posters of him on our bedroom walls, and all we did was play his albums, watch his show, and wished we could sit in the front row someday and get kissed by Tom. Hahaha, thank you so much for your reaction, I am just laughing hysterically right now watching you watching him. Thank you! 😆😄😜

I've watched your reaction several times now cuz I am 😂 LMAO at you. Even if somebody had told you Tom Jones danced, you wouldn't have understood until you watched him. But the thing I picked up on was you seemed surprised 🤨 that his show was on ABC. You must remember that all we had then was the networks, ABC, CBS & NBC plus PBS. There was no such thing as cable TV -- we'd never heard of such a 🤔 thing! No cell phones, tablets, Home computers; we'd never heard of having WIFI in our homes, no MTV. MTV came about 1986 or something and around that time we starting having some cable TV and not everybody had that.
So, when you think of it, it's kind of remarkable that we even have all these videos on TH-cam to watch for your generation to even find!
I just thought I'd remind you about all that stuff when you are watching all these wonderful artists from l those years ago! Keep up the good work and I'll be watching! Another request for Tom Jones 🎶 music -- The Green, Green Grass of Home -- I think you'll love it! ♥

Tina Turner on Tom Jones Show is a dynamite performance. They use to dance like that in the day. lol I think its called the boogaloo. It was known that he and Mary Wilson, of The Supremes had an affair for quite a few years. Tom was a ladies man and very popular at the time.

Your reaction made me so happy. Thank you. I was an early teen, okay mid teen during those years. Tom had a show, Glen Campbell had a show, Mac Davis, Andy Williams, Sonny and Cher, Donny and Marie, I'm sure you're getting the picture, everyone who was anyone on the charts had a show if they wanted one. These were the days where we had regular TV shows during the regular season, and then we had summer replacement shows. These musical performers fit the bill perfectly because every three or four years they needed to quit the show in order to record an album or go out on tour, leaving the slot open for the next musical performer. I'm pretty sure this wasn't intentional, but it's how it worked out and we were the beneficiaries. It was a wonderful time to be a music lover. I enjoyed your reaction very much. Thank you for sharing it with us. Happy holidays to you and to your followers.
